I appreciate all of your assistance in advance... I have searched and can't find any topics on this issues yet.
I bought this S4 from a guy on craigslist yesterday and noticed a strange issue with "demo" screen popping up and not going away and not being able to uninstall.
I installed Kies today and it is telling me my device current firmware version is NOT supported and I can't update the firmware.

Can I root and then upload a standard Firmware to the phone? I can't take this phone back to Verizon since I didn't buy it from them. Everything on the phone works just fine, but i keep getting this to pop up over and over
which is tied to this (demo main button that give me no option to forceclose or uninstall)
and VZW demo in lower right

I activated the phone at the Verizon (not a re-seller) store to make sure it was clean.. so no issues there that popped up.

Get Rom Toolbox from market and you can freeze and uninstall that. Also search for a stock rom and flash over it after being rooted.

There is an app in the play store:
Galaxy S4 Retail Mode
It States, "This application is intended solely for retail display"
I'm wondering if this may have been installed?
I would try doing a factory reset first and see if that takes care of it.

I would flash the stock firmware in Odin. Someone else had this issue with a different phone and that solved the problem.

I will look up odin (or if you have a link to it that would be awesome!!) .. to be honest I rooted my old Bionic when I first got it almost 2 years ago, but I haven't done a ROM swap before.
When I do a Rom file does that also update the firmware?
Found the Odin link

I have looked all over for the Samsung Apps app, because it said free paid apps for Galaxy S2 owners, but I wasn't able to download it because it is only supported by the international version (I9100), or even find a working link. I finally found in and I have tested it and it works on my S2. Here's the link http://www.mediafire.com/?6jsccasdtd642l3

What, exactly, are the free apps? If anything like the ones that come with the i777 then they are useless bits of marketing fluff.
He's talking about the Samsung stock apps, not the att bloatware; I think.
From what I read online samsung actually had some nice games from gameloft etc.

The gameloft games are demos but the best one is dead space by ea... Its pretty rad.

There have been issues with stuff like this where you need to change your build properties to the phone model they were originally for in order for them to work. Not sure if that's the case with these, but something to consider. Stuff from Samsung for an i9100 may not work on an i777 by design since some of these free programs are protected by copyright and are not supposed to be distributed in certain areas.

If you do a search for "dead space" in the samsung apps app. It will show up sometimes but when you click "get" it fails to download. I receive a 4002 error saying "this product does not exist in this store". Is this something temporary or is the game being taken off for good? I also would love to get this game!
Hi guys. Just picked up my sgs3 yesterday coming from s2.
I got it from t-mobile store. I think it's unbranded. Not seen anything t-mobile related.
I updated firmware via kies yesterday as there was an update available.
Is this the latest firmware for unbranded phones in UK via official channels ?
Also. Are the stock roms on here a massive improvement or are they buggy?
Cheers

Thats what I would expect, however there are no T-Mobile apps, no t-mobile logo in boot animation. To clarify when I say T-Mobile store, it was one of those Everything Everywhere T-Mobile/Orange stores, I believe all stores will be that soon?
Lfb is the latest European firmware. Easy to spot because it has a brightness slider in the notification tray.
The firmware has only been released a couple of days now so you might not get it straight away. Plenty of ways to download it here on xda though.

and it Keeps the ROOT. (If ur still on Stock like me)
Is it safe to update to this if I have unlocked my bootloader. Still on the original firmware at the moment but I unlocked it. I thought I remember reading that you aren't supposed to install OTA updates with an unlocked bootloader or something.
I am rooted, and the update could not install. I have uninstalled some of the ATT bloatware however, so that might have something to do with it.
You may go ahead and install it, even with unlocked bootloader. At worst, it will fail to install and just go away. At best, you will have the latest updates from AT&T for what it's worth.
I have unlocked, rooted OG and every time I flash to restore to stock, that update comes up time and time again, even with fotakill AND cache delete. I just let it update and it fails, each and every time. No harm done at all to my phone.

Have you got any text yet ?
Something happened to my text messaging too. For the record I am on The Base 0.7.3 which doesn't include this update. From Friday morning at 10am until last night at about 10:22pm I didn't receive a text but people got my outgoing. Then after my phone crashed and I rebooted, about 30 minutes later 15 texts came through. All from confused people who were wondering why I wasn't responding.
Come to think of it, I had issues sending a text to my brother on Friday night. He's on verizon. I rebooted and eventually it went through. I'm rooted but not unlocked and haven't seen the update. On a possibly related note i kept missing calls Friday night. But I'd get the voicemail. Then yesterday i couldn't. Make or receive calls. It turns out my sim card came loose

Odin flashable version available in the Download Repository. I may create a stock plus root version sometime in the next week, but I'm too busy for the next couple of days to even think about it. Haven't heard if it can be rooted easily; no one has talked about it. If you're adventurous, you could try Framaroot and let us know.
I didn't know about that Framaroot thing. Seems like it'd be easier if it works. Haha. I rooted it by flashing a CWM-based kernel for i9000 in Odin, rebooting into recovery and flashing one of the JB kernels for i777, and then downloaded SU from the Play Store. That long, convoluted method works if Framaroot doesn't.

One would assume so. They probably had it fixed by 4.0.4. Guess we'll hear about when people start screaming if its not.
Why are we so pumping up about this 4.1.2 release?
Aren't we using 4.1.2 six months ago? and 4.2.2 months ago?
So it is an official release from AT&T, meaning their loyal clients were still running ICS 'til now? Wow

I hated the AT&T ICS ROM, but this one isn't so bad. I would be (and had been until recently) using CM10.1, but my company's email client won't work with Android 4.2, so I'm stuck with needing a 4.1 ROM. I had been using ShoStock 3, which is good in a lot of ways, but it always seems like if it's not an official Samsung ROM or CM, it doesn't really feel "together" for me.
This AT&T JB ROM actually does seem good. Sure it has a bunch of useless Motion gimmick features, and there is the usual bloat, but I was able to root (as mentioned above with Framaroot -- the Aragorn exploit) and disable almost all of the bloat. NFC isn't supported (which is absolutely stupid), but I never had a real use for that anyway. There are lockscreen shortcuts, resizable widgets, and pretty much all of the good JB features are there. In the ICS ROM they made the Power settings widget completely useless by making it take up 2 rows so it could include useless toggles, so I was hoping to see that they had gone back to the single row widget, but it looks like they dropped it completely. In general, things are responsive and smooth, and bright and happy, without being too cartoonish.
Don't get me wrong, I'd rather be on CM, and if my IT department ever updates the Lotus Traveler software to a version that actually works with 4.2, I'll do it in a heartbeat, but in the meantime, I think this is the best 4.1 ROM I could ask for.
Did the update get rid of the android keyboard for any of yall? I updated and I noticed the android keyboard is missing. I went to get it from the play store and it says its already installed but I can't find it anywhere in my phone. Any suggestions?
I'm loving this phone, I came from a Galaxy S4 and it was definitely worth the upgrade, but the "S Finder" and "Quick connect" buttons in the notification drawer are bugging me since I have no intention of ever using either app. I looked through the settings and I didn't notice anything to disable this unlike how you can turn off the recommended apps (earphones). I already tried to see if you could turn the apps off in the application manager but it's not an option. Anyone figure out if this is possible?
They're bugging me, too.
+1 seriously wtf.

i'm hoping there's a custom ROM before my return window closes...this could be an amazing phone but TW is so inconsistent.
i just came from a Note3 with an AOSP ROM and it's been a rough transition for me.
***i know: it's SO HARD going from one 6-month-old flagship to another just because i have too much unsupervised free time...right?
lol i totally was about to ask about this.
Now that I think about it, WTF is S Finder anyway?

S Finder is a search app, by typing a few letters of anything, it will search almost anything on the phone apps, messages, contacts, email, notes etc.

Ya know I was kind of curious so I just looked it up and I think your right. I think that those buttons where removed in the at&t, sprint and verizon versions. (along with the download booster). They are in the international and the T-mobile versions though. I think that T-mobile is the only carrier which released the S5 with very little personal modifications of there own and therefor is almost identical to the international version (which is the one released direct from Samsung). That is probably also the reason why the international roms work on our phone. I think that all they did was just install there apps. Cool! T-mobile is getting better and better all the time.
Some reason I can't quote you on this app now, but anyways; I haven't gotten my hands on a AT&T version to verify it, but my buddy has a AT&T one so I called and asked if he had it and he said no, so it's hear say I guess lol
But that would be good if we could flash international on it

This is annoying me as well. I think those not yet able to craft their own ROMs (like me), are gonna need to wait. If you're feeling adventurous, you maybe try installing [ROM][G900F][4.4.2]-AllianceROM-OTA Nightlies (the F and T models are similar I believe) and providing the developers with feedback.
Edit: There's also the possibility that [APPS][4.1+] Google Experience Launcher (GEL App + Google Search App) will work, as described by the article How to get the Google Experience Launcher on the Galaxy S5 which I found via this post (go thank him if it works).

I already use GEL, it's in the notification panel though, not the launcher. I'm thinking maybe there will be an Xposed module for it eventually, maybe Wanam can add it.
No guarantees.

Remount /system rw.
Delete existing SystemUI.apk and odex file in /system/priv-app/
Copy this version in. Ensure permissions are correct.
Reboot and enjoy.
Someone else less lazy can make it a flashable zip if they want.

It did get rid of the SFind and Quick Connect buttons on my drop down notifications
I do have a circle icon with the S inside upper left. I have the Alliance Rom onboard, FYI.

The brightness control is a separate setting. This doesn't affect that, I just have mine turned off.
