What is the current procedure to root the DNA? - HTC Droid DNA

Back in March I was rooted, running a cool sense 5 based custom ROM and happy. But the phone had other ideas. It stopped recognizing the SIM card and the replacement phone Verizon sent was on the latest firmware which we couldn't hack. I couldn't deal with the stock configuration after having the custom ROM so I binned the phone and went back to my old GS3 hoping to someday be able to go back to the DNA.
If I understand things correctly, that day has come and we can root the current firmware equipped phones.....Correct? I've read thru a number of posts and all it has done is left me confused and hesitant to give it a shot.
Can someone help me out with the correct steps, methods and procedures to root my stock, S-on DNA running the latest OTA firmware (2.06)? Any help is greatly appreciated!!

So I just follow the steps listed in the link above and I'll be ready to flash a custom ROM? No HTC unlock code and such?

Correct.

Ok, gave it a shot with the windows version and didn't succeed. Followed the instructions and definitely made sure there was no trace of HTC Sync on the computer. When I run the Distiller.exe file, everything seems to run OK for test 1 (rebooting into bootloader) and test 2 (booting device) were the phone reboots like normal. Then the script says rebooting into bootloader (again) and sits there waiting for fastboot. It times out after 60 seconds and says connection failed. usb connection error.
Any ideas on were to go from here?

You need fastboot drivers.

Suggestions on were I can get those fastboot drivers?

Google HTC fastboot drivers. If you are on win8 with usb 3 ports only you can expect issues.

Googled HTC fastboot driver and it looks like I need HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe . If I google HTC android drivers I can find another file HTCDriver_4.2.0.001.exe. Tried them both on my home windows 7 machine with a USB2 port. Nothing changed. Same results.
So I tried the window XP computer at my office that I originally used to root the old DNA. Got a little further this time. I get a message that temproot has failed. I also get a lot of stuff going on with "other devices" drivers when I watch my device manager. Is this normal during the process?

Ok temproot failing means factory reset time. You should be good after that.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 4 Beta

That did the trick!! Factory reset and the older XP machine. God, how much I missed the custom roms for this phone. It totally transforms the device.
As for the Moonshine process, like I said, it worked for me but I did run into a few more speed bumps. Everytime the phone would reboot, I had to squash the HTCsync install. I guess it's something on the phone as I searched hi and low to find anything like it on the computer, with no luck. Anyhow, I would just cancel out everytime the message appeared on the screen. If I didn't cancel out, the moonshine script would time out and fail.
Just wanted to follow up on this in case someone else has similar issues.
Thanks again, guys!

Root process failing halfway through script execution

So I rooted my Evo successfully as well as the Evo of one of my good friends. However, a second friend of mine wanted his new Evo rooted so I naturally obliged. However, his phone repeatedly gave me the finger when I tried to root it. Here is what happened:
1. Executed root script via THIS METHOD
2. Script began rooting.
3. Script entered first phone restart phase.
4. Script entered second phone restart phase.
5. When phone turned back on my laptop no longer recognized he device (i.e. Android 1.0 in Device Manager) and so the script could not continue its process.
My attempted solutions:
1. Reset to factory settings and reattempt to root. (Failed)
2. Reset to factory settings and attempted to root using RegawMOD (Failed)
3. Did not try to RUU as I did not have the RUU necessary for his device.
My question here is this....if I RUU his device and reattempt the root is it likely that I will encounter the same issue as I did initially? I do not know whether this was an issue of the rooting process or an issue with the drivers on my laptop. My powers of deduction tell me it is based within the phone since immediately after his phone was unrecognized I was able to plug my phone in, as well as my other friend's Evo, and have my laptop recognize both devices instantly.
Cliff Notes:
My Evo: Rooted Successfully
Friend #1's Evo: Rooted Successfully
Friend #2's Evo: Root Unsuccessful
Personally I would just HTCDev unlock his phone and flash TWRP...then download whatever rom (even the rooted stock if he wants to stay 100% stock) and flash it. Best way to root imho. Hasn't failed me yet!
I would try re updating the htc drivers for your pc

Interesting. It definitely sounds like Drivers. The quote below me is right on. I was having this problem as well. The only thing I can think of is that you have a couple sets of drivers on your computer. When you go to update it updates with the old drivers (don't know why). I had this issue with my Kindle Fire.
Have you tried to update the drivers by manually selecting where to find the drivers?

I guess I should've added that to the OP. Part of my fix prices was also to completely uninstall all HTC drivers and reinstall them. I used the drivers from PDANet since those were the only ones that managed to work correctly. All of the others wouldn't install correctly.

[Q] Can't get past activation

Today I woke up to my phone saying Please insert Sim card, it was inserted. I restarted, no dice, reinstalled cm 10.2, no dice, wiped factory settings, cache, dalvik cache, then installed Paranoid android, still not working. It won't let me get past the activation screen even if I let it time out and hit skip it literally will just go back to the welcome screen and try to activate again.
I searched around and found that RUU-ing back to stock, locking the bootloader and all that would fix it so I locked the bootloader and am trying to use Ruu but half way through Ruu-ing it takes me to a black screen with a silver HTC logo on it and freezes, then Windows 8 tells me that it is not reconized and Ruu says error 171 which is a USB error. I checked under Device manager and it said unknown device so I'm obviously missing the driver so I go to install htc sync to get the driver and no dice, even if I uninstalled HTC sync and kept the driver it still didn't work. My question is which driver am I suppose to be using?
Phone: Droid DNA
Rom: Was running CM10.2 at the time then installed Paranoid Android to see if it would help

Evidently resetting it via recovery was the wrong way to do it. I tried it through fastboot and it worked!!! Thank you for all your help!
I'm on my second dna, about a month in total two phones. First one rooted, s-off from stock rom flashed the latest build of cm10.1. Upon boot up the first screen where it says activating it just sat there after about 5 minutes said it couldn't activate. Odd. On my past nexus devices Samsung gs2 and gs3 it would fly past that screen. I restored my back up same thing it said I had no service. Data worked but couldn't make a call or send a text.. Didn't know what to do and luckily Verizon didn't seem to care and swapped it out. So now I'm re-rooted on this phone but to afraid to flash anything cause of what happened. Seems like the same thing that happened to you happened to me.. I don't know how to do the ruu thing and I guess u can reset the phone from boot loader?? What fixed your issue.? I really want to rock stock android but to scared to flash anything. Let's say something happens again do I just get in boot loader and reset that's it nothing else needed?

You welcome!
after RUU >Stock Factory Reset, can be done from the phone... Setting>Back up & Reset> Reset Phone ( is exactly the same process when you go to Bootloader, fastboot and apply /Factory Reset. my bad if you misunderstand my concept , I called Stock Recovery to the Factory image and setting of the phone as it came out of the box to differentiate from Custom Stock Recovery like CWR/TWRP. Glad that u figured it out and have your phone back. Next time i will more specific.

I actually had to downgrade from 8.1 because it was impossible for me to get adb and fastboot working, because of the drivers. I spent the better part of a whole day trying to, its simply broken because of driver signing.

Advice for newb

hi everyone.. I recently upgraded my phone to the LG G2, and in doing so I have kept my Droid DNA for the purpose of getting into rooting, and customizing. I have always been fascinated with smart phones , and operating systems, and would like to get to know how to dig into them. I know stock systems very well, and optimize every phone I get up to the stock allowance. Now I want to lift my limitations, and this is the perfect phone to do it with. so if yu could please kindly give me some advice on where to start,. I have been lurking these forums for quite some time, and I find it overwhelming, since I don't know a good starting point. I will continue reading/learning before I tap into this OS, but I just need to know basics, then I will begin to understand the framework..if I have this in the wrong section, im sorry, ill find it if you move it. if you can help , thanks in advance.

I suppose unlocking and S-off should be your starting point, if I understand the question correctly.
If your DNA is on the latest firmware 3.x.x then Rumrunner will get this done for you.
Then install a custom Recovery, ClockWorkMod (CWM) or TeamWinRecoveryProject (TWRP).
Back up your OE Rom by making Nandroid (done in recovery).
After that you can flash whatever ROM you choose.
I have 2 DNAs, on one I have ViperDNA 2.5.0 and on the other CyanogenMod 11.0 nightly.
Above all, have fun :good:
Thanks, Yes... that does answer my question. And I am on firmware 3. Android 4.2.2. Is there any specific advice you can give me to avoid any fatal errors?
btw. what lead me to create a this thread, was that I heard I need rumrunner , so I went to the website, DL the file. after extracting the file for my device, and executing soju.exe, when it ask if im aware of the implications or whatever "type yes or no" when I type yes, It just keeps asking me over and over lol. so I got no where. so I did some digging and found tons of different threads ,, some of which say use this file.... or that tool kit, or this program.... or that method, some that seem to no longer works etc. so it just confused me on what I need to do with my particular phone. 4.2.2 firmware 3 sense 5.0

This http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559232 should be all you need for unlock and S-off.
This http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994662 is the Recovery I use, TWRP.
When using Rumrunner you must follow the instructions EXACTLY.
Make sure your drivers are working properly.
Make sure your device is recognized by ADB and Fastboot.
Rumrunner assumes you have studied, and are familiar with ADB and Fastboot commands.
If not read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=879701
Make sure your firewall and any anti virus are disabled.

That's not entirely true. You have to disable driver signature enforcement in Windows 8.x then install the ADB driver. Microsoft doesn't want anyone unknowingly installing drivers by accident. They make it so that you know what you are doing and doing it on purpose.

Got it!
I did all the same things on my Windows 7 laptop and it worked perfectly the first time. It really was Windows 8.1 that was the problem. I'll be sure to follow that link and make sure all the rest of my drivers work in the future. Thanks.

[Q] How to EASILY unlock bootloader

I am so serious about this I have been sitting here for 3 hours trying to find a way to unlock the bootloader without code, or terminal, or other stuff a non-coder would know. I have read about moonshine and some jcase exploit a bunch of other ones I forgot the names of. Windroid looked good but cant download and doesn't work on windows 8.1 or software 2.something
Mines is sadly still on 4.1.1 with software number 2.06 (whatever that is)
At this point all I am looking for is a way to unlock with one click or a way that won't have a ultra high risk of bricking my device if something as simple as a space or comma is left out of whatever it is. I'm not a noob at android or any other os but whatever hacking or software edits I've done never involved command terminal.
If there is no easy way to unlock the bootloader, I am going back to Samsung after being a Samsung person for 4 years, I never had to do this and I've gotten so use to installing custom roms I can't live without doing it....

Rumrunner is what you want, good luck with 8.1, it does not like HTC drivers. There are several threads about both topics.
Use rumrunner.
It is rare to brick your device with it, and the good thing is you can always start over and get it working.
As far as command line knowledge, I have none, but the devs have put everything you need on "paper". Just copy and paste.
I'm not sure why you're doubting yourself or want a one-click method. First, I have no command line knowledge and have done a bunch of things as long as I follow the dev's instructions. Two, the only truely bricked DNAs I've seen ended up being hardware related.
So unlock that sucker and report back with your success. Use a Win7 computer.
There is a newer, more simple method to unlock the bootloader. 2 files, quick and easy.
Firewater S-OFF
No luck with any of these because I have a windows 8.1 laptop. I tried installing the windows 8 drivers and it still didn't detect fastboot. I went to the library to try their windows XP computers. Can't install hardware so that's a no. Is there any way to do it on windows 8 because I don't know anyone that doesnt have windows 8 willing to let me install a driver on their computer for this.

I tried and tried and have had 0 luck with any adb drivers on Windows 8 or 8.1. You will need to use windows 7 or prior. Find an hold hard drive, throw 7 on it, and there ya go. Or find a friend, work, anyone that has windows 7 and ask to use their computer for an hour.

I just got Droid Dna and it has 4.4.2 Kitkat. Is there anyway to unlock its bootloader, or at the least root the phone?

I'm not sure what he did I still have the files all he did was drag and drop them into the drivers folder and replace the ones that were already there. When I get home I could screenshot them or whatever.

You should just download the exploit unzip it and extract it to a folder on the desktop. Then hook your phone up follow directions and run the exe that contains the exploit and you should be done when it completes. It doesn't get any easier than a one click method.

Sorry for the long reply. And when i get home ill do all of that once i find the files first.

I can't find the exploit anymore the page on mediafire I got it from said it was removed. And I forgot to mention the one I had contained a .exe in it but that didn't work for me.

[Q] Am I too late to root

It has been over a year since I got this phone. Normally, I rooted the day I received a new phone. But I didn't think that I had any reason to do so this time until I bought a Chromebook. Now I really need to tether.
Can someone show me where to start? It seems that most the threads I have looked at are pretty old and just spent a couple of hours going no where.
Current software is 4.4.2.
Thanks.

Does rumrunner work on 4.4.2? If not you may need to use firewater instead.

Firewater definitely works. I just got a DNA last night, running 4.4.2 and locked up. Temp rooted and ran Firewater and literally about 5 mins later I am unlocked and S-Off. :good:
OP did rumrunner work for you? I'm in the same situation trying to get hotspot to work after the KitKat update. Thanks

I rooted and unlocked the bootloader on the OTA Kit Kat. I thought it wasn't possible at first, but Weaksauce and Firewater will do it.

Could you possibly give me more details on how you did this. It has been more then 2 years since I rooted anything and I don't want to do anything wrong. Since you were successful with the same phone and software I have I would really appreciate it.

Hi there. First thing is making sure you have all the proper drivers installed and HTC Sync uninstalled.
I then installed the app to temp root and ran Firewater. The terminal commands are on the firewater site....if you need more detail or even a step by step, I'm happy to help and write something up. I just can't tonight as I have an obligation to attend to.
Let me know how you make out and if you need additional assistance I'll write something up tomorrow around this time.

Thanks for the reply. I have the instructions for Weaksauce and Firewater, but I don't want to make any mistakes here.
Where can I find the latest HTC DNA drivers without installing the HTC Sync program?
Where can I find the latest ADB download?
It looks like these are the last things I need to find before continuing.
I'm at work, but this evening I'll either find you a link or upload them to my dropbox. Hang in there...I'll help ya out lol...soon as you have everything, its literally like a 5 min process.

Thanks. You have been very helpful. I have rooted 6 devices without a problem, but always rooted when the device was new along with the tools to root. Alwayw made me nervous though.
Thanks again...

Haven't forgotten ya...I'm just getting home. Have a few things to attend to.
You can get the HTC drivers from this post right here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2000896
Ok, download the SDK from here : http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html?hl=sk
Make sure USB debugging is turned on. Install the attached weaksauce apk for temp root. You can verify you're rooted by downloading superSU and root checker from the play store.
Unpack the SDK and you'll want to put the firewater file in the folder titled : adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20140321
Open a terminal from this folder by holding down shift and right clicking the folder, "open command window here"
Follow the commands given on the firewater site.
Profit.
Once S-off and unlocked go to the TWRP thread in original development and download a recovery. Flash that via fastboot.
Then flash super user zip for root...again, search that out. I'm running out of time so I can't right now...lol
This is all I did. Collect all your files first. Make sure your drivers are good to go before starting. Install the drivers, reboot the pc and plug the phone into the usb. Likely a driver install thingy will pop up with like 5 little circles...let it finish before you begin.
Good luck bro...I'll check in tomorrow or later tonight to see how you made out.

Well, didn't work for me. I am guessing I might have tried to root months ago. I drank a lot back then. When I ran WeakSauce, it said I was already rooted and did nothing. Then I ran Root Check, and it said I wasn't rooted. But I moved on through the steps. But when I got to the last step in FireWater, it said I need to run as root.
I noticed I had SuperSU app installed. So I uninstalled that, uninstalled WeakSauce, re-installed both and started over, but got the same results.
Not sure where to go from here. I almost feel like I should just do a Factory Reset and start over, but that could really screw things up too.
Man, sure am sorry to hear that..maybe a full RUU would fix you up. Then start over...I'm not sure. Maybe someone with more in depth knowledge needs to chime in here..
bummer.....

You know, now that I think about it, I did have full root before, but I wasn't thinking one night and got an OTA update that made me loose root. Maybe that is why I can't use weaksauce. I decided to start in my bootloader. Attached is a screen shot. Tried to go into recovery, but that failed. Just came up with a picture of a battery or something. Had to hold the power button down for 10 seconds just to boot normally.
Does the screen shot tell you anything? It tells me, I think, that the phone is S-off'ed and unlocked. but firewater complained about not being rooted. I am confused.

As said right above me....you're all set to go. Use fast boot to push a recovery and then flash super su zip. If you need the zip I can attach it later.

Funny. There have been other threads where people are asking how to root DNA 4.4.2. They have been referring them to this thread So I guess I am not SO dumb.
Anyhow, as I remember, there are a couple of ways to flash. 1) from the PC using ADB and from the phone using an IMG file right? What is the easiest way to flash the Recover file? Which version of ClockWorkMod is going to be compatible with 4.4.2 and where would I find the download? Also, one last question, which SuperSU version is going to be compatible and where is the best download?
