[GUIDE] Mac Root (tested) - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

This guide is for the select few that need to root their Samsung Galaxy S4 via Mac.
This guide only shows how to swap kernels in order for you to run motochopper then swap back to stock kernel.
Please keep in mind this is technical and involves using manual commands for heimdall in terminal.
If you have anything to add or have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
I have tested this method using Heimdall on my Windows 7 machine.
I do not own a Mac to fully test this.
I am not an expert nor do I portray myself to be one.
I am not responsible to any problems from this method including bricking any devices, loss of data, or other issues that may arise with your device or computer. (Just to cover my behind.)
Things you need:
1. Heimdall
2. prerelease kernel boot.img (MD5: cd49d9c337d624abec5f6f1229e1abf6)
3. stock kernel boot.img (MD5: 3c776b87c2c1390787189e60d311c769)
4. Motochopper Root Exploit Tool
5. Drivers can be installed by installing Kies
First install Heimdall.
And make sure you have the drivers installed.
Make sure you have the prerelease kernel boot.img (MD5: cd49d9c337d624abec5f6f1229e1abf6) in an easy place to find and make sure you keep it seperate from the stock kernel boot.img (MD5: 3c776b87c2c1390787189e60d311c769).
If you have Kies installed, uninstall it.
Then open the heimdall-frontend application that was installed with heimdall.
Use the heimdall-frontend app to detect the device by going to Utilites > Detect.
Next open a terminal type
Code:
sudo heimdall flash --BOOT <full path to prerelease kernel>
Enter your password.
The prerelease kernel will be flashed and your device will reboot.
Go to Settings > More > About phone
and check to make sure your kernel version is 423399.
Then go into Settings > More > About phone > tap "Build number" about 7 times until it unlocks Developer options
Verify in Developer options setting on your device that you have "USB debugging" checked.
Verify in Developer options setting on your device that you have "Verify apps via USB" unchecked.
Verify in Security setting on your device that you have "Unknown sources" checked.
Verify in Security setting on your device that you have "Verify apps" unchecked.
Extract the motochopper.zip file.
Open terminal, navigate to the motochopper folder and type
Code:
sudo chmod +x run.sh
Then type
Code:
sudo ./run.sh
Follow the on screen prompts.
After you are rooted, make sure you update the su binaries.
Otherwise you will lose root later on.
Next boot your phone into download mode in order to put the stock kernel back.
Open the heimdall-frontend application and detect your device once again. (Utilities > Detect)
Next open a terminal and type
Code:
sudo heimdall flash --BOOT <full path to stock kernel>
Then go to Settings > More > About phone
and make sure the stock 562219 kernel is installed.
Credits go to djrbliss, chainsdd, Samsung, creators of Heimdall, and if I missed anybody please let me know and I will add them to it.
Thanks to Doppletronica for confirming the method.
If you found this guide helpful please hit the thanks button
EDIT: If this thread now belongs somewhere else due to its nature, please move it mods.
Also anybody is free to share this guide, just link them to this thread and please give credit where credit is due.
Thanks.

I'm not too sure about an unroot method.
I'm sure if I looked at it hard enough I could come up with something.
Are you looking for an unroot method via Mac?

yea. i mean, just for testings sake. i dont want to have to go through the whole unroot just to test a root method drama.
i could unroot on my VM and try your root, but what are the possible effects to it going down? does it work with you?

Update:
I tried making an unroot method.
That completely failed.
So I had to use Odin to get running again.
I did however get a chance to test the root method for Mac users.
It worked with no problems for me.
I may continue working on the unroot method but that depends on my own free time.
If anyone is interested in assisting with it that would be great.

I got this same error. What I did was uninstall kies and then open the heimdall-frontend app that was installed with heimdall, and use it to detect the phone. (In Utilities->Detect) From there I could run the command line part successfully. Worked for me.

Man.....I wish I saw this yesterday. I spent 2 hours getting my old imac up and running with bootcamp to install windows.....another hour looking for my old XP disc to actually install it on the iMac, another half hour to install XP, then a good 45 minutes or so trying and failing to gett all the samsung drivers to wok (too several installs and unistalls til it finally worked). After all that, I downloaded the all in one root kit and install recovery as well.

[How To] Easily Root your SGS2

Instructions updated based on creepyncrawly's thread found here .
1.) How to root by using DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit. (ZergRush Exploit) (Windows)
[*]Not working for KK6 2.3.6[*]
Download the "DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit v3.0" package from this thread and extract it to a directory on your hard drive using WinZip or a similar program.
You need to have the USB drivers for SGH-I777 installed on your computer. (It will be "Samsung USB Driver for Mobile Phones" in Control Panel\Uninstall Programs.) Download and install the latest drivers from this thread. (x86 and x64)
Both USB Debugging (Menu\Settings\Applications\Development) and Unknown Sources (Menu\Settings\Applications) should be enabled on your phone.
Increase the screen timeout on your phone to 10 minutes. (Menu\Settings\Display\Screen Timeout) Remember to set it back to a shorter interval after you are done rooting.
Connect the USB cable to the phone and the computer. Go to the directory where you extracted the package and execute "runme.bat".
The toolkit will open a command prompt window where you will see the progress of the rooting process. It takes between 5 and 10 minutes for the process to complete.
Success. You're rooted.
2.) How to root by using SuperOneClick Root. (ZergRush Exploit) (Windows, Linux and Mac OS)
[*]Not working for KK6 2.3.6[*]
Download "SuperOneClick v2.3.1 - Automatic Driver Installation" from MultiUpload and extract it to a directory on your hard drive using WinZip or a similar program.
Please go the the SuperOneClick thread and read about the tool and how to use it. For Windows XP you need to have .NET Framework v2.0 or above installed. For Mac OS and certain flavors of Linux, you need to install Mono.
I have not tested this tool. It is included here because it claims to work for Mac OS and Linux, and provides a way to use the ZergRush Exploit on those operating systems. Since I am only familiar with Windows, I will be unable to support this rooting method. For problems, try posting questions in the SuperOneClick thread linked above.
If you try SuperOneClick on Linux or Mac, please post your (success or failure) results. Thanks.
3.) How to root by flashing Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock, Kernel + Rooted System Package with Modem using Odin3 One-Click Downloader (Windows)
I have prepared Odin3 One-click Downloaders for the Stock non-rooted and Stock + Root packages. Each One-click Downloader also contains the Modem. This will make flashing back to stock or flashing root in Windows easier. These were tested and flashed successfully on my device. These could be posted in the OP for convenience.
Odin3 One-click Downloader I-777 UCKH7 Stock + Root No Bootloaders
I777_UCKH7_OCD_Root_No_BL.7z
(This one-click downloader flashes: zImage, factoryfs.img with root, and modem.bin)

How to Use:
Download the 7 zip package. Extract the contents of the zip file to a directory on your hard disk drive.
Start the Odin3 One-Click Downloader program by double clicking on "I777UCKH7 OCD No BL.exe" or "I777UCKH7 OCD Root No BL.exe".
Now Enter Download Mode:
With the phone powered off, plug in the usb cable while holding the vol up + vol down buttons (but not the power button).
When the warning screen appears, press Volume up to continue into download mode.
In Odin, the small edit box in the upper left corner will turn yellow, and say something like [0:COM8]. The number could be different.
Click Start. Watch the progress bar advance in green while the message box in the lower area describes the steps. When the flash is finished, the top left larger edit box will turn green and say PASS! and your phone will automatically reboot.
Unplug the usb cable from you phone after it boots up. Success.
The above is from creepyncrawly, found here.
4.) How to root by flashing Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock, Kernel + Rooted System Package from the command line using Heimdall (Linux and Mac OS)
Tested on Linux, should work on Mac OS
Download and install the latest version of Heimdall Command Line for your operating system from here. (Latest version 1.3.1 at this writing.)
Download Entropy512's Return/Unbrick to Stock, Kernel + Rooted System Package from here. Extract the PDA.tar file from this package to a directory on your hard disk drive, then extract the two component files from the tar - zImage and factoryfs.img.
Place zImage and factoryfs.img both in the directory where you have the Heimdall command line executable, and enter the following at the command prompt:
Code:
heimdall flash --kernel zImage --factoryfs factoryfs.img
Reboot the phone. Success. You're Rooted.
Super simple, Thanks!!

Probably a noob question, but pc drivers - are they the same as captivate or do I need to get new drivers? Link?
Thanks,
Bob
I can not for the love of God figure out why odin 1.8.2 is not recognizing my phone. I tried it first with debugging on, then off. Different ports. I know the drivers work because i can mount it and add or remove files from it. I get to downloading(do not turn off target) but Odin does not say COM1 or what not. Any suggestions/
I feel I missing something obvious, unless this driver is different then the captivate driver?

Same for me... Odin goes smoothly but SuperOneClick crashes after closing and trying to restart adb
Hmm..
Two issues I am having with this. The first and most important is that I cannot seem to flash any other ROMs - or even other versions of Clockwork Mod with this. I get "signature verification failed". I've checked the MD5 of the downloaded files and it all seems to check out, so I'm unsure if this is intentional or not.
I've also now got an annoying big yellow exclamation point on boot. It doesn't really impede anything, but it is... absolutely infuriating how it stares at me with its yellowness.. It really isn't a big deal, though.
I'm going to try to reflash a third time, though, maybe it will solve itself.
Will this work with Heimdall?

Check your software version. If it ends in 11c then it will not work. You need to LGNPST to version ending in 10o first, then you can root.

[Root] RockMyMoto (Yes, even the first OTA)

This will void your warranty, like all root exploits. Use this at your own risk. Do not take OTAs on rooted devices unless you know what you are doing, as it may cause a bootloop or a soft brick.
RockMyMoto is designed for MotoXs that have recieved the Camera update, patching PwnMyMoto. If you are unsure of your firmware, try PwnMyMoto first.
First step is to install Cydia Impactor, by Saurik. http://www.cydiaimpactor.com/ This is required. You will also need adb installed and working, and be comfortable with the command line. Your phone must be on the same network as your PC.
Figure out the ip address of your phone:
adb shell getprop dhcp.wlan0.ipaddress
Click to collapse
unzip RockMyMoto-{version}.zip and push the exploit and su to /sdcard/:
adb push su /sdcard/
adb push RockMyMoto.jar /sdcard/
Click to collapse
Run Impactor and select "# start telnetd as system on port 2222", then hit start.
Once the process is complete, run telnet:
telnet {your phone's ipaddress} 2222
Click to collapse
Run the exploit through telnet
dalvikvm -cp /sdcard/RockMyMoto.jar RockMyMoto
Click to collapse
The exploit will tell you to use adb to reboot:
adb reboot
Click to collapse
Run the exploit through telnet for the second time, it will reboot on it's own:
dalvikvm -cp /sdcard/RockMyMoto.jar RockMyMoto
Click to collapse
Run the exploit through telnet for the third time, it will not reboot:
dalvikvm -cp /sdcard/RockMyMoto.jar RockMyMoto
Click to collapse
Wait 0-60 seconds, for su to install, then install SuperSu from the market.
Enjoy!
Known issues:
If you have AP isolation mode enabled in your AP (aka WiFi router) you won't be able to connect to your phone via telnet, disable isolation.
Windows users having trouble see here
I confirm that this does work on the Droid Maxx on the new OTA update !!!
Thanks JCASE Much Appreciated !!!
Thank you!
Looks like I'm going to be at a loss. I never learned how to use adb :/

This might a dumb question, but why don't we just release a rooted OTA update?
Quick question about this exploit. I know that the issue with the first two earlier methods is that everything is still signature checked, which prevents Custom ROM/Kernel flashing, as well as Custom Recoveries.
Does this exploit bypass the signature check to allow for custom recovery, or not just yet?
PS: Your skills are godlike. A million thanks for your root hacks!

youve almost got a triple negitive going on there, so to clarify, you are rooted, with write protection disabled (ie cant make lasting changes to /system) and you still have stock recovery. is that right?
I am getting link failed file exists when attempting to start telnet.
Forget all that, I was using the wrong port, now the process beings to start the telnet process hangs at waiting for completion then goes back to the impactor main menu, the telnet connection is not successful after that.
I am using the latest soak test update, Am I wrong thinking that this method works with that update?

Yup sorry if it was confusing.
Ok I think I figured it out my phone is already rooted even after a factory reset. I used voodoo when I took the update and everything worked but I had no touchless controls so I did a factory reset after installing stock recovery. I must have had the protected su on the phone still and it stayed unless jcase has a work around for this I am stuck until the new fxz comes out. Then I can completely wipe su out and I will be able to start all over. It really is not that big of a deal I can use almost everything with just root even xpsosed setting work. It would appear the exploit does not allow you to run it if you have root it must verify you do and thinks all is well so it never installs the writer protection off and replaces the stock recovery. My stupid mistake for trying to short cut this I should have just did an fxz took the update and used this method.
Aaaaaaaaand back to rooted. JCASE you are the man!!
If anyone has questions on what to do ask away. it was very simple
I've never used adb before in my life. Would you recommend me trying it lol. Meaning would it be easy for a first timer.

ADB is not difficult. There are tons of tutorials all over the web. I wish I knew more about telnet and the other stuff involved tho

You need to go into settings and about phone. Scroll to the bottom to build number and tap it like 6-7 times you'll see it countdown and say "now you are a developer". This enables developer options

I didn't think the me7 exploit was supposed to ran with terminal emulator. Have you tried safe root another windows tool?
Nvidia Shield Root and More Doing a little bit of reading goes a long way.

Ok..I will try that one...I also have a note 2, but the software is 4.3 .. I know the bootloader is locked on this one. But if I can use saferoot to root it and than load safestrap to load custom roms on it? From what I read you cant put safestrap on the note 2 with 4.3 but i read somewhere that you can put safestrap on here since I still have the 4.2.2 ....Thank you for the help so far..

You have got to be pretty careful, since there's lots of variants of these models. For example, there's at least 6 incompatible models of the Samsung Galaxy S4 (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, International (a couple of models as far as I can tell) the "L" variant, etc.
Following directions for a "Galaxy S4" without knowing if it's the same variant as yours can lead to bricks.
People have successfully used Saferoot to root Note 2 with the MK7 build. Then you'll have to research if Safestrap works - it's likely if you're running 4.3, but I have no idea. Do the research before you flash.

What kind of phone do you have? I assume an i545 given that this is the Verizon GS4 forum, but it's worth asking.
If the phone did not reboot, then it's probably rooted but no busybox installed, but that's OK. Just install it from the play store.
Or, you can just re-root, and provide a bit more detail on what happened.
Yeah like @k1mu just said post more info, specifically what the output of the adb script says. Also if you dont get a SuperSu prompt after the script finishes. Then try typing su into terminal or adb shell and tell us what it says

I may try and reroot it and see what happens...its hard to explain but it was at the part where it was telling me my phone was going to reboot and to unlock it and press any key when it does..I waited and the phone didnt reboot
... I just did it again and it looked like it worked...I kept seeing the popup that ADB shell has been granted superuser permissions....it said all done and the command prompt closed..

I typed SU into terminal emulater and a window popped up asking for super user permissions and I granted them and Im at the [email protected] with a # sign...so Im assuming the # sign at the prompt also means that I gained root...
I did make sure I was using the right software..I was aware of the build # and I made sure I was trying the right stuff..From what I read safestrap should work using the 4.2.2 android version..with the ME7 build that I have...
I have been all over this site the last 3 days since I got into this when I should be studying for my networking certifications...lol...Thanks for all the help so far..I really appreciate it guys..

Successfully Rooted Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 3 & Install Safestrap

Here's the complete instruction for rooting Verizon Galaxy Note 3. Thanks to XDA forum members.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Root Verizon Galaxy Note 3
Model Number: SM-N900V
Build Number: N900VVRUBMJE
Android 4.3
Pre-requisites:
Kingo VERSION 1.1.6 (Doesn't work with latest versions. Device not detected or driver issues)
Worked with Windows XP only. Tried Windows 7 Ultimate & Enterprise Edition
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Uninstalled all Samsung USB Drivers and Kies
2. Installed Samsung driver v1.5.33.0
3. Uninstall previous Kingo versions (just to be safe)
4. Installed Kingo VERSION 1.1.6.
i.e. run "KingoAndroidROOTv116.exe". It will connect to some server and download the Kingo v1.1.6
just need to install through thier download manager. It will check other avg bloatware. Uncheck those.
5. Now connect the phone.
DON'T DISCONNECT THE DEVICE UNTIL WHOLE PROCESS IS DONE
6. Start Kingo. It should now recognize the device.
7. It will download dependencies and fetch scripts from server. Will reboot the device couple of times. After that it will be rooted.
8. SuperSU app on the phone will prompt for root access. Grant it. This message will also be shown in Kingo app.
9. Now the Kingo will show the device is rooted.

Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Safestrap
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2517610
Install Safestrap on Verizon Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N900V)
LATEST STABLE FILE: Safestrap-HLTEVZW-3.65.apk
1) Must be rooted and allow apk from unknown sources.
2) Copy Safestrap-HLTEVZW-3.65.apk to phone and install
3) Hit Install Recovery. It should be installed.
4) From there you can reboot and you *should* see a new splash screen during the boot up. While this is showing you can enter Safestrap Recovery using the [ menu ] button.
Which roms does safestrap enable one to install?
These exact steps are already posted...
And you can install any ROM with Safestrap
Is someone screwing with me? I am late to the Note 3 party, picking one up yesterday. Not going to activate unless I can root. I have searched high and low for 1.1.6, have found everything but that version. Is there something specific I should search for, a hint within the forum rules? Thanks! I tried VRoot after getting frustrated and it failed.

I looked at the Forum rules and didn't see anything against posting the link, so here it is:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/gm2zkk1j5e6jbg4/KingoAndroidROOTv116.exe\
This is the Afterdawn Kingo 1.1.6 installer. It will give you 3 options trying to install AVG as your antivirus. Make sure you uncheck those boxes. After you download the file choose open to install. It's easy to figure out after that. If you need help with it post back.

Ok i got this link from someone earlier, mid rooting it messed up my screen where it will not recognize touch unless i used s-pen. Couldnt find a fix for it, top of the screen worked but bottom portion would not respond to touch. I ended up unrooting and formatting twice and it mysteriously started working normal again.

Sorry to hear that. This is the same file I used. Nothing happened to mine. I did see on the forums someone else say their phone bottom half stopped responding to touch. I believe he said he took the battery out at night and the next morning put it back in and it worked again.
