[Q] annoying problems retrieving downloads - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Using Cyanogen 7.2
1. "Downloads" application (v2.3.7) says there are no downloads. If I use file manager I can navigate to downloads folder and see the files there. I read something saying Downloads application will only display files that were downloaded with the default android browser - is this correct? I use Firefox and will occasionally be using the light version of Opera.
2. Workaround if question in 1 is correct would be to create a shortcut to the downloads folder on home page, using file manager. However, the file managers I've tried "File Manager" built into 7.2, and "Open Manager" apparently don't allow shortcuts to be created.
Is there another open source file manager that allows shortcuts to be added to home page?
Would really appreciate any help with this, thanks

I know es file explorer offers this,,, and is quite awesome,,, not sure about compatibility on cm7 but i would think it's fine

New Applications

Hi I am new here.
I have downloaded some new applications that I used to have on my old xda wm device, and although I can open them via file explorer, these particular files are not coming up in the start menu, and also (probably connected) I cannot link them to the quick link tabs. Is there any simple reason for this?
Go to the File Explorer, Windows directory and copy '(app name).exe' as a shortcut and paste in Windows\Start Menu.
After this you can put them on quick link tabs.

[Q] Android Download Manager

Hey guys, i'm looking for a download manager that will allow me to specify a download location when downloading files from my web browser. I'm currently using Miui Browser and/or xScope but its annoying to have to move files to a storage directory every time I download something and the browser only use a default directory for all downloads.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

[Q] How to move a folder to the tablet "desktop"

As the title says, how do I move a folder to the tablet's "desktop", the main screen that you get after the tablet is finished booting.
Running currently CM7.0.3
Thanks.
As for moving the folder itself I have no idea, however if you want to create a shortcut on the tablets "desktop" then simply install Astro File Manager, long press on the desktop, choose add item, shortcut, ASTRO & then choose the appropriate folder.
Just be sure to hit okay quickly after you choose your folder otherwise it will take you into any subfolders within the parent folder (that is unless you choose to create a shortcut for a subfolder)
If you use es file explorer all you need to add is es bookmark manager beta to do this. Just tested it.
Hmm, I wonder if this is a ROM specific issue. I'm using Beasty's ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1084573). When I long press on the home screen, one of the items I can add to the home screen is folders. I added a "Recent Documents" folder to the desktop to test. From the other comments, it sounds like there are a few alternatives if your ROM doesn't have a direct option to add folders to the home screen.

How Install apk from sdcard using internet browser

What if you need to install an apk from sdcard but you don't have a file manager installed yet, and to make things worse you don't have internet access to download it from the market!
Well, there's a solution to that. Provided by every internet browser available.
(I suppose you have one installed
Here's what you need to do:
1. Put the apk file in the main directory of your sdcard. Rename it to something very short for easy typing. In this example, I will use "fm.apk".
2. Boot your device. Goto Security Settings and check "Unknown Sources".
3. Open your internet browser. In the address bar type "file:///sdcard/<filename>.apk".
In our example above it should look like this: file:///sdcard/fm.apk
4. Press "Go". That's it! Installation started!

[Q] Question about Downloads button in app drawer

This is probably a stupid question, but I'm wondering where the actual folder location for the Downloads app/button that is in the app drawer is. Well, it shows up in the app drawer but I'm sure it's not an app. I'm running 4.4.2. Nothing I've ever downloaded goes there. It always ends up on the sd card in the download folder.
So what is the app/button good for? And is there a way to redirect downloads to go there? Seems like an easy way to check what you downloaded without using a file manager. If it only worked.
Downloads app is a download manager. You can see your current downloads and the finished ones there (not every download though...Chrome downloads appear there, for example), install or delete downloaded apps. But your files still go to sdcard download folder.
