[Q] Will not switch on at all **Help** - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so my father in law was updating an app in the play store on his galaxy S2 and it crashed the phone on the update. He pulled the battery out and now it will not switch on. If you plug the charger in you get no display. He has a spare battery and has tried that and still nothing. I have experience with flashing rooms on my galaxy note so any tips to get his phone working again would be great. He is with Vodafone in the UK.

Can you get into Recovery or Download mode? If not, then motherboard is probably faulty.

plug in the charger and keep it for sme time
if u feel that the area near the camera is gettin hot then u have a dead motherboard
if u have it in warranty then get it to the service center they wud replace the motherboard

Service centre.

Phone warranty expired on the 19/06/13 Vodafone unwilling to help, Oh well. Thanks for everyone input

Try a local mobile shop. And a service centre might still fix it for you, they'll just charge through the nose for it. Your best bet is to get a 2nd hand motherboard from a donor phone (eBay/Google) & either swap it in yourself or pay a local mobile repair shop to do it. Or given how long you've had the phone, get a new one.

Damn ... have the same problem (phone died from one moment on the other, no reaction to any buttons and/or cables, no charging. Battery is fine).
So I searched and found a shop that claims it can resurrect such a dead phone. So I packed my dead phone with the battery attached into a plastic bag and was about to send it in, when I noticed the device was VERY WARM ... So it seems something inside is still alive or at least is wasting battery ... Do you think my motherboard has died, too?

Does it get hot near the camera?
If so, send it away.

[Q] display problem:screen not showing anything

Hi friends...this is the first thread by me so far and that too bcoz i cant sort out my problem by myself.
so the problem is with my neoV's screen...first it started a few times while scrolling through lists...then anytime touching any option...the display showed vertical coloured lines starting from the top coming down and went blank in 1.5 seconds...then nothing...everything on the screen gives respond on touch but i cant see anything...just blank black screen.
at first the problem went away when locking the screen and unlocking after a minute...but now...it persists even after reboots...i cant even see the boot screen...nor the recovery options...so no way to do anything.
i changed kernels via fastboot, dried the device with hair drier...only repairing with pc companion or flashing stock ftf is left...but i think the problem is not software related.
i think i have damaged my screen by charging from a samsung charger.
i will update the findings after flashing a ftf or repairing with pc companion.
any of you have any idea about the problem?
thanks.
well, I think same as you, hardware problem, LCD passed away..
PCC or .ftf and to the service center.
btw, why you mean it's caused by samsung charger?

Though my friend is having problem with one old slide samsung when charging it with SE charger, phone freeze, restart and lose sms's but that's not coincidence as it happens everytime when she charge it with SE charger... strange indeed.

in my case...i cant authentically say it is bcoz of the samsung charger...anyway...downloading .431 ftf...very slow conection...then if the problem persists...i will have to relock the bootloader to take it for service.
but i fear they may ask for the charger...and if i take the torn charger to them...they will straight away refuse to repair under warranty...and buying a new charger will be costly...sony equipment is always costly...and i think it would be better to repair my charger by myself and replacing the display.

Don't worry, they wont ask you that. You are claiming warranty for phone, not charger
In none of service center I've been to, charger was need to be given.

Note not charging?

Anyone have any tips for a Note not charging? Tried a few cables. It is rooted and has a custom ROM, so I feel like I am stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Anyone have any experience with this that maybe could point me in the direction of how to get my phone back to working normally?
Flash back to stock?
Does it still connect to your computer? If it's not charging & not connecting, your charging port is probably broken. You could probably manage with an external battery charger & a couple of batteries you can charge & rotate, like these-
Try blowing the port out with compressed air? Otherwise, yeah, you're looking at a replacement phone.
Sent from my Galaxy Note.
Same thing happened to a 'friend'. That part is very easy to change out. I don't know if you can buy it by itself though. What I 'heard' you can do is buy a new note from BB switch the charging ports and return it. Just make sure the battery is charged when u return it.

But I do need to flash back to stock first, right?
I flashed a stock rooted rom and they were cool with that. But it would depend on the person. Does the port work if you hold it in a certain position?

Yeah. I tried around 3 or 4 chargers (car, oem, etc.), and none worked. I got home last night... Plugged it into my computer with a cable I had left at my computer, and it was charged in the morning.
Maybe I can give it some more time to make sure it wasn't something just disrupting the pin connections.

The exact same thing happened to me. My Note stopped charging completely. As previously stated, you can get an external battery charger but your best bet might be a replacement phone.
From what I was told by a local phone repair shop, its not an easy fix. I'm not sure how correct that is.
However, AT&T replaced mine and it was quite an easy process.

My phone just stopped charging. Luckily, it has 50% charge left, and I have a backup iPhone. Has anyone else experienced this problem and had their phone successfully replaced?
If so, did you go through AT&T or Samsung? If I go into an AT&T store, will they be able to give me a replacement right there? If not, will they at least be able to start the repair process?

I claimed a warranty exchange. Went to AT&T and they gave me the warranty number. I don't think I've ever had a phone swapped in-store even though I have insurance.

Your charging port could be broken, you can always buy a wall charger for cheap on amazon to charge your battery..and might as well pick up another battery while your at it. Very convenient.

That's a good short term fix, but it's inconvenient and by the time you get that wall charger you'll have a new phone via warranty exchange.
I have a OEM charging cradle and battery I got on shopandroid for cheap. It was well worth it.

Just for those looking at this thread that have this problem, I had a good experience getting my phone by replaced for free, and rather quickly by AT&T. My full post can be found over here.

I have the same problem with my 3 month old note (At&t i717). No pressure pull or anything was done to the phones USB port in fact it happened in the middle of the night while charging, it just stopped charging on its own. It's stock rom never rooted 2.3.6. Picked up the phone this morning was about 50% i didnt pay too much attention, got in the car and plugged in and noticed it is not charging. I thought its my trusty Chinese charger but it was not, came back home tried home charger the laptop plus USB cable and non worked. I am using original home charger and samsung USB cable. Cleaning the port did nothing. Rebooting few times and pulling the battery out did not help either.
And then the strangest thing happened. While it was plugged in (without me even touching it) after 20 minutes of being plugged in suddenly it made its DING sound and started charging. It has been charging everywhere since then, that was a few hours ago. I am worried it may do this again. It is definitely a software issue to me. I didn't touch the phone and started recharging all on its own!
I bought this note off Craigslist and its only about 3 months old and still under warranty but I don't have the receipt so Samsung says f/u. Very pissed at Samsungs poor customer service, really rude people in the Philippines at customer service, when I told them I bought the phone on Craigslist used, they acted like I have stolen their family jewels and did not want to talk to me. They came up with lame BS excuses like warranty doesn't transfer to second owner (it does, it's mandatory in the USA magnuson moss act ). HTC in contrast has always services my used phones without receipt using the IMEI they check and know it's still under warranty. They place a temporary charge on the card but they have never charged me anything and have promptly repaired my phones multiple times over the past couple of years.
I've replaced my phone twice under a try warranty. It was super easy and the second time they sent me a brand new device. Also have your charger replaced as well, it a warranty issue also.

[Q] S3 died in pocket - wont switch on, no download mode/recovery no nothing

This morning my S3 was working fine, fully charged over night and functioned as normal. Sent a text, put it in my pocket and went about my business. Checked the time half an hour or so later... still fine. Came to make a call an hour after that, the screen was off and i couldn't get it to switch back on.
My first thought was that it must not have charged over night, plugged in charger and tried again but still nothing. Luckily the misses has an S3 also so I tried her battery in mine and vice verca... her phone switch on with my battery and was still charged... mine still did nothing at all with her battery in. Absolutly nothing!
I can't get anything out of it... wont switch on, no download mode, no recovery, laptop wont pick it up via usb. Its not like it banged anything whilst in my pocket as i was just sat watching TV and an hour ago it was fine.
Anyone had this or know what to do? Is it worth making a JIG to try and force download mode even though no button combo does anything at all? (believe me i've tried them all!)
Phone is rooted and *was* running a custom ROM with no problems. Does it need a trip to a service center? If it has to go for a warranty repair is there any way they can tell root/ROM if no download mode/ recovery?
I could understand if I f***ed it up when flashing something but as I say I was doing nothing at the time.
Thanx in advance for any info!
Theirs a thread started called "borrow a jig near you" if you cannot access download, recovery or anything I think that's the only option you have or the dreaded service centre lol

Happened to mine. Totally dead, was sitting on desk so wasn't touched between last use.
Sent it to Samsung (Regenersis) who replaced a power management IC and the main board.
Sadly it returned with very poor cell reception so went back, and has since come back still with poor reception, scratches, and lint under the camera glass! Not too happy with Samsung's repair centre atm!

Cheers for the replies. Looks like it's off to the service center for a fix and some added problems.
Just hope they can't check the flash counter or ill be paying for it!
EDIT: just spoke to my carrier and because its only a few months old they will replace if free of charge!
Anyone know if it will still have all my personal info on it or is it too dead to talk to anyone?

[Q] How do i fix this?

My i9300 all of a sudden stops charging.
I disassembled it and the next day decided to plug it in again. It charged up until 48%, when i plugged it out for use again.
Now, one day later it again won't charge... weird?
I'm trying to buy a usb port connector and want to replace it as i think the problem lies there, but how do i do this?
All the youtube video's are only replacing the simple stuff.
I have tried using another battery + batterycharger, this is not the problem. The phone still doesn't charge. I really suspect there is oxidation inside the USB connector.
Hope there's anybody who can help with replacing it.
should be the cable problem? many cases on this!

Thanks but this isn't the case with me. I really suspect there is oxidation inside the USB connector. So could anyone help with how to replace this? I live in the Netherlands.
You said you dissembled it, you have enough knowledge about it?
I don't have much myself too but I tried my hands on my older devices in many cases, so I can only suggest you that the charging point which is a usb port would be connected to your pcb which needs to be disconnected with the help of an soldering iron and then you can replace it with a new one. However do it only if you have subsequent knowledge.
Also before trying anything try more chargers, I came to know that none of the generic and few original ones couldn't charge mine too. Check for their voltage.

alright, thanks for the reply. But my device is flashed around 1000 times and it looks like i opened beercans with it. So this would not create a healthy warranty argument i guess. This is why i'm trying to do it myself.
Now all of a sudden it charges again, when i left it at the charger... so definately no charger problem. maybe oxidation/waterdamage from raindrops?

Power IC - Dead S2

Hi All,
My S2 just died two days back while getting charged. The phone just won't turn on. This happened once previously and i got my motherboard replaced from the Samsung Authorised Service Centre at the cost of INR 9,000 [USD 150] (almost at 1/3rd the purchasing price of the phone).
This time i went to a third party repair vendor in Mumbai, India called phonecare.in
They are telling me that the power IC on the motherboard has fried and it needs to be replaced quoting a price of INR 2,000 [USD 30]. They also advised me that overcharging the phone like keeping it on charge while sleeping makes the IC burn out. Is that true? Please let me know.
Also, any Indian users here, please let me know your feedback on phonecare.in as well.
regards,
Nandi

dude i have also same problem..
does your problem solved after changing POWER IC ???
i am also from INDIA
Replied to your PM
Well, I too faced the same problem.
Do you have an update to share?
I bought my S2 in June, 2011.
Day before yesterday it was connected to my PC via USB and suddenly it just stuck on boot screen.
No Recovery mode but, yes I could access Download mode. (I still can access Download mode)
I tried flashing the stock firmware but it would not pass NAND WRITE START..tried flashing siyah kernel...would not pass NAND WRITE START.
Showed it at a local service centre..They say I need a motherboard replacement (standard answer)...Cost: Rs. 8,852/-
My phone was pretty good till date & if I don't get it serviced it would just be an "EXPENSIVE PAPERWEIGHT".
I just want to ask if a JTAG can solve the problem? Or like you suggested in your post.. by changing the power IC ?
If not, is it viable to spend so much on a 2.7 year old phone?
Any suggestions?

mine have same problem heat up on charging no recovery no download mode.may be JTAG can solve our problem
JTAG very very unlikely to work, so don't pay somebody upfront to try a JTAG - only try a JTAG if they're prepared to do so on the basis of 'you only pay them if a JTAG is possible/successful' or you're just throwing money away you could be putting towards actually having the phone fixed.
the local repair shop owner said it'll take 3-4 days to replace the Motherboard so i told him to call me when he'll get the motherboard as he doesn't have currently in his shop..
SO he'll call me within 3-4 days when he'll receive motherboard and I'll get my motherboard replace from him... he has already told me it'll be genuine and I've pics of my old Motherboard for future reference in case he'll do some other stuff on my Old Motherboard to wok it again..
BTW does Imie changes when motherboard gets replaced ???
and can i check on my motherboard at home whether which part of it if gets Shot-circuited or not ???

Did any of you try changing the power IC? I was so dumb that I missed to back up some data..
I also face the same issues, phone dead; and power IC (area near the camera) heating up while charging the phone..
I just want to get my data out..:crying: Please help!!
To add there is no short circuit and the service center has advised to change the motherboard.. My friends have the same issue, we got the phone together in June 2011.

Phone is safe (dead) with me, I bought a OPO the same week. Being without a phone was impossible.
I had some contacts backup which was a year old and that helped to get about 80% of my contacts.
No use
I also had the same problem.i went to the samsung service center in chennai, they said it needs a mother board replacement which will costs me 9000RS so i took back my phone. Now i dont know what to do with it.
You have 2 options......
1) pay for the repair.
2) bin the phone and buy something else.
Replacing individual components on these boards is near impossible......nobody can give you a 100% guarantee of success, unless they have access to Samsung's automated computer controlled production line.....hand soldering simply is not possible.
This is why the only realistic option to repair the device is to replace the entire board....If anybody tells you any different, they're trying to con you.....
