why is my battery draining so fast ?? - HTC Rezound

Recently I have installed CyanogenMod 10.1 and Hiro Kernel 6.25 to get the most out of my battery. I re installed the recovery tool (not AmoRa but the other one) and flashed like neccesary. It seems that Battery Monior is always telling me that my battery exceeds 100degrees F. According to the power saver thread below his phone runs at about 250mAh, well mine sometimes reaches up to 1000mAH and gets drain insanely fast. I dont know what seems to be it?

fast drain
For battery drain problem, I'd first check for something syncing.
Not just mail and social apps, but some widgets constantly run
just being on the screen, like Stocks, YouTube, and many others.
Also, make sure GPS is off. And if 4G is spotty in your area, leave it on
3G to avoid hunting between 3G and 4G, which uses up battery.
Hope you find what it is....

that wasn't it at all, but thanks. It has something to do with the governors, kernel, or the way I installed something; because on a STOCK rom it works as it would work.

something was keeping your processor pegged.. you should pull the battery if its running that hot for that long a time. You can rupture the cells and cause real damage to the phone. the only time I've reach those temps/current levels was when I was trying to kill my battery for calibration.
That was Recording 1080P video, while streaming pandora over bluetooth, with google maps navigatoin running uploading photos and downloading my entire drobox at the same time
Something was REALLY wrong with that kernel/settings... I would stay far away from it

When I ran the last cm with hiro from 6/22 I believe my location never shut off, it was running for like 6 hours straight. Strangely I only lost like 25% battery over that time span, I figured it would've been dead. Haven't tried the latest hiro and cm combo yet

Battery Life? Nothing running, no calls, or messages. 10% down in an hour?

Is this what everyone else is getting? I am running DCD's latest Rom and Radio.
I used to get two days, now i may get one. This is with no GPS running or any programs. Or making any calls.
Any advice?
Rephrase then.
How much battery life is everyone getting on the new Rom?
Are you sure your wi-fi switch is OFF?

"These are some factors that could cause your battery to drain fast"
The brightness of the screen is a factor. Try lowering it if possible.
Disable active sync, bluetooth, wifi, and beam when not needed.
Using the GPS drains the battery quick. ( results vary )
Push email also assists with battery drain.
Put your phone on standby when not in use.
Also the extensive use of PIE and Windows Media Player also assists with the drain of battery.
Last if you have poor signal strength this can also be a factor for battery drainage.
There are others out there but these are some that I encountered and learned live with.
There is a battery hack out there that can help you with your battery life. I don't know from the top of my head but search for a registry battery hack.

all those are try but when you first got your phone did you charge it all the way before using it cuz messes up the battery i know it did for me
Follow up.
On my original Rom I could get 48 hours on a charge.
Today I got 8 hours. I did not use GPS, I am not using vibrate for calls. I only got two calls. And two emails.
Basically I am using the same settings as I had on the original Rom and getting about 24 hours less battery life.
I guess I'll switch back and report then.
Perhaps this might be it?

DAMN.. that would explain alot.. I have a feeling its the same bug with the titans..
I dunno... I've been through the progression from 2.0.0 to 2.1.0 to 2.2.0 to 2.3.2 and I haven't seen anything like this.
I use the phone for about 10 minutes a day, so not much call time, but I have it checking 4 IMAP accounts every 15 minutes, do about an hour of web browsing, and use the GPS two to three times a day (basically any time I drive anywhere cuz it's fun!) and the most my battery has drained is down to 70% after about 16 hours.
Just to give an alternate view... battery life has been very good for me.

No. When I first got my phone I installed on the apps I researched before buying the phone, configured my WiFi, and imported my playlists from Windows Media and then I charged my phone with the AC adapter.
I use alot of WiFi through out the day along with Stereo Bluetooth Headphones to listen to music one Windows Media Player and I have a very good battery life.
Follow up.
My email server locked up this morning and my activesync wouldn't sync.
BUT my battery life was back to it's old self, used 6% in 4 hours. Very Happy!
Email server is now working and Active synce is syncing.
When I check the activesync program it always says connected now. Is that normal? It doesn't seem like it used to say connected all of the time.
It does look like activesynce may be the problem. The setting are the same as they were before the flash.
Any info would be appreciated.
Update: In case anybody is following this.
I went back to stock ROM and Radio.
Battery behavior is back to Normal. I am going to reflash to GPS Rom and see if that was the problem.

I an confirm this too. A few days ago I noticed excessive battery drain and reset my phone, and put it out of my mind. The only later ROM that I'd retained for days at a time has been 2.3.1 and today my battery level feel down by 50% in ~6 hours of standby. With the power on, with 46% remaining, the OS estimation for usage was 26 minutes. In 1% increments I could see it counting down....
I checked all running processes and nothing was out of the ordinary and nothing except that running task manager was bothering the CPU.
On a reset it appears fine.. Disconcerting. My phone didn't demonstrate this behaviour with the DCD 2.1 and previous ROMs. I don't know if to go back to 2.1 or 1.6.10. I'll see if this issue shows up again over the next few days.
That was the same problem I had.
Hopefully I'll dp some more testing this weekend.
After a reset the draining was repeating for me.. I decided to revert back to a working DCD 2.1 set-up and all appears fine again.
2.3.1 ROM was a kitchen build including the transcriber and no2chem's nueLED v1.5. That's all that I can think of being out of the ordinary.
I thought I am the only way with this problem. I thought it just a bad battery. Using DCD 2.31. Before 2.31, battery is about 90% on casual used when I left work. With 2.31, it becomes 95% after it pull from the power plug. Browser the web for like 10 minutes, it goes down to like 92%. By the time I finished work, and get back home around 7, it left with like 30%. That's on casual use.
Anyone tried reflashing to see if that helps the battery consumption?
It seems like this is not common, but effects a few of us.

I am also noticing the same effects, i was thinking bout reflashing my rom, i am currently running dcd's 2.3.2
Flashed back to stock and then back to 2.3.2
It looks like I am seeing the same battery drain again!! ARGH!!!
My battery is dropping like crazy too since the latest kitchen. When I first went to DCD's first WM 6.1 ROM I was blown away by the battery life. Same settings , same apps, different ROM and the battery life blows.
I decided to wait it out for a week and see if the new ROM comes out, if not I'm going back to the WM6.1 ROM that I first tried.

[Q] ED01 Battery Issues

My wife is fully stock and I'm on the Ultimate KangBang Rom. Both have the ED01 Radio's and no 3G issues that we are aware of.
Since the update, we are both getting far worse battery life.
I have not touched the voltage controls in the rom.
Anyone have any ideas?
Could this be related to a 3G issue we simply are not seeing?
Should I (as she is not rooted) try to reset the battery stats after next full charge?
Should I call 228 to make sure everything is kosher on that end?
***************
Update:
I unplugged this morning at 7:30ish. 100% battery.
I started this thread at 10:30ish. 75% battery.
~3hrs, light use, lost 25%.
I hit both options in *228 at 10:30ish.
Its now 1:30ish. 71% battery.
~3hrs, light use, lost 4%.
I think the update, in general, just screws up your 3G/roaming etc. This was already known with other issues Verizon had over the last week or so. This seems, to me, as the most likely cause of battery drain.
I'll will come back later to say if anything changes. Also, need to see if wife ran the *228 options on her phone and will report back if findings are similar.
Hey superchunk,
I have a somewhat related post in the general section, and am finding low cell signal together with Google location services are giving me 4-8% batt loss per hr. See below. Also make sure to toggle airplane mode once per boot to workaround the 50% TWOS bug.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1057628
Check what apps you have installed. After I did the full update to ED01, and then replaced the kernel with Imnuts' -100 undervolted kernel, I was getting great battery life until I installed the full Skype client. Even logging out so the program would quit, the battery started draining upwards of 10% per hour, even when the phone wasn't being used.
It seems Android in general, and 2.2 specifically, is pretty vulnerable to errant battery drains. Worst part is that it didn't stop after I uninstalled Skype, so I had to go through the whole process again - back to DL09 and then update.
We've always had google services on (before and after upgrade), so I don't think that has anything to do with it.
Neither of use have Skype and no other apps have been installed anything new (don't use skype), but that doesn't mean something old has a new undesirable effect.
So far, I've ran the *228 options and will see if that helps. I'm thinking we simply haven't noticed 3G dropping and really needed the updates to programming and roaming.
Having a phone constantly searching for its best band will cause quicker than normal dead batteries. This is one of the reasons the Thunderbolt is getting so many negative marks for battery life, LTE just isn't there yet.

Seems the Google location services battery drain was much less of an issue with 2.1.

System tuner: Battery life, cpu tuning, and more.

I have been messing around with system tuner app for a while now and I really like the program.
I would like to hear from people who have used this app and their results with various tweaks that this app provides.
in the boot settings menu:
1. forcing both CPU's online: this should technically give you a better battery life, since it puts less strain on on cpu at a time, has anyone had a good exprience using this?
2. Boost app loading: anyone had any significant improvement with this?
My own settings:
I usually clock my phone at 1.5 (on demand governor) even though faux's kernel allows 1.7 max. I put max clock for screen off at 384 and conservative governor.
I have Undervolted before but do not see a very significant battery difference so I just left it alone.
I tried out the autokill option of system tuner, I only tried to kill the ghost apps, to refrain from the cpu from having to keep restarting the phone, but this also seems to kill battery life...In my experience any type of task killer however detailed will reduce battery and does not increase performance, unless you're running a poorly written app that just needs to be killed.
I use three other programs to monitor my phone
1. system pannel: very good at finding rogue apps that kill cpu...I highly recommend the pro version, you can get a history of what has used cpu up to a week.
2. Onavo and My data manger which basically monitor my wifi and mobile traffic, Onavo only monitors mobile network traffic and lets you restrict apps to only wifi. however it does not measure wifi use of data. My data manager monitor both wifi and network usage but does not give you any options to do anything with the apps, it basically tells you what program is using data while on wifi and mobile.
If anyone has found a good balance between performance and battery saving, please do share.
Thank you.
I read some other guy also mentioned the all cpus on thing. im not sure but isnt it the same as making both processors work at the same time which leads to phone overheating? I will give it a try though. from what you noticed, do you like it more with both cpu on or is better the way it was?

will see then. hey seansk do you notice some kind of hesitation when trying to unlock the phone? when u press the unlock button at the top. I think that boost app loading thing causes this cuz when have it enabled the unlock button you have to press it twice to work, while when disabling that boost app loading thing all works fine...

I have widget locker and havn't had that problem...I just flashed faux's latest kernel and am in the process of re calibrating my battery, it seemed to jump from 100 to 90 in about 10 minutes!!!!!! now I noticed that happening...but I havn't had time to fully replicate it...i need more time..I believe it might have something to do with fauxes kernel, he mentioned that when screen goes off he it puts the phone into a low power consumption mode, but also has something that when you turn it on, is quick to turn on!!! we'll have to wait and see.
If you've been following this thread, just wanted make a quick update...I want to give you my results with system tuner tweaking. Forcing both cores online is a bad idea. It will literally kill your battery in a matter of a couple of hours. ICS will hopefully be different and utilize the cores how they should be, saving some battery and giving the amaze longer battery life!
On the other hand reducing reducing clock frequency on screen off will help in battery life (obviously).

yes still stock rooted, I put the governor on conservative and put the frequency to 384 or around there, while screen is off.
What helps most I found out is turning off all the radios like wifi and network data, (basically putting phone on airplane mode). Instead of dropping down 15 percent in 6 hours it drops like 3 when I turn airplane on. But like I've said before it's unrealistic I'm always recieving google talk, google voice, facebook updates and I have to have both of these on which unfortunately eats a lot of battery.
I keep switching back and forth between faux's kernel and stock and I'm actually finding stock gives me better battery life for some reason. Even though I set the clock speeds on both at 1.5 ghz.

Battery Life
Major battery drain is the screen, when on eats up all the juice, dimming helps a bit
charge source: usb vs AC charge
usb charging takes quite a while, AC charge quicker (~ an hour)
Also, from my observation, usb charged battery runs out quicker than AC charge
Data Connection, Juice defender helps a lot
turn off sync you don't need, like HTC sense

well the problem is its not my screen. I have juicedefender ultimate, used it for a while actually...the only good use of it is turns off radios all other things when screen is off..all other things are negligible to battery life...I currently don't use it anymore. I tried multiple things/tweaks with it for about two weeks,...NO point lol...I want to be able to get my google talk message and my google voice texts, it annoyed the hell out of me when someone had sent something like 2 hours before and I would just get it when I woke my phone!!! I tried all kinds of things...but the only thing that actually worked was turning off radios during screen off which I don't want...I can't win lol....I can't have my cake and eat it too!!

For what it is worth I am running BulletProof 2.3.1 and last night I took phone off charger at 10:00 PM, alarm goes off at 3:30 snoozing every 15 min until 4:15...Battery was at 100% still. It is now 7:00 AM and battery is at 96%.
This was after flashing back to BP around 8:00 PM.
I've noticed the same type of activity when in Airplane mode. Extremely low power consumption - fantastic.
Is it possible maybe to undervolt the Wifi/BT/Mobile radios? Would that make any difference or am I off base here?

You had something setup wrong then I think.. you can change how often in syncs while the screen is off, the default setting is for it to turn on data for 1 minute every 15 minutes. Most people don't need to know things so bad that they can't work with a 14 minute delay(at worst), and of couse the internet is on while screen is on, when you're actually using it.
I thought I would need to use juice defender, but since I switched to bulletproof, my usage last me an entire day. From 8am till 1am, usually with some to spare. The only tweak I made to cpu was to enable 192mhz, it isn't like there is a performance drop, but it did make a notable difference in battery life.
If I wanted to I could use juice defender to get more than one day out of it, and I keep a spare battery on me in case I really need to use the phone.. but haven't really needed it.

[Q] [HELP] battery drain really fast

I know this question has been asked really lots of times, but I didn't seem to find cases similar to mine.
there doesn't seem to be any wakelock (except 2 which is incredibly short) and it was in deep sleep mode all the time. but yet, it drains almost 5% per hour which i find is really too much...
I've tried lots of firmware (litening, wamanlite, turkbey, stock, ICS) and removed all the unnecessary bloatware to reduce wakelocks to a state as shown in attachment. but still, they do not have any results, still get less than 1 day life without any usage at all...
Could this be hardware problem? I find it gets hot really fast even when i'm just facebooking.
Or is there anything else can i try to do? this device really started to disappoint me ever since the battery life looks like this.
any help will be greatly appreciated.

maybe try out BetterBatteryStats, duuno but maybe this could help?!
cheers and good luck!
Try Hydrogen-ICS latest version, it seems to be "the rom" today
Battery life is very good and its overall a stable system.
Make sure to "Fix Permission" after first start, reboot recovery and do it.
Also sometimes "to much junk" in your SD card can cause battery drain, copy your files and format the SD card, you might see some diffrence. (i did)

you got 20Hrs out of your phone? grats! as of lately i've been trying alot of different roms and different customization settings from kernel tweeks to CPU tweeks (undervolting/underclocking) and im even turning off every extra setting that consumes battery power apart from wifi
on best with a 2000Mah battery i get 13 hrs on standby and 4 hrs if im playing a game - these days my phone doesnt charge anymore - it discharges even when plugged in
I recommend downloading HydrogenICS, it's good! Download Battery drain, so you can see how fast your battery is being drained.. Also, let your battery go down to 5% then charge your phone
Something is seriously wrong - you've hardly used it, looking at those graphs.
I'd try a stock anything, and if you get similar drainage send it in for repair/buy a new battery.
this is'nt normal , in sleep mode i can get 20 hours and only lose 9%
use hydrogen and neak , and try , if you get the same result so it will be hardware fault
the 3g data it kills the batt very fast,i don think u got a hardware prblm, cause 20hrs an still to go is good ive seen ppl reporting worse...dude instal better batt stat,3g watch dog but remember batt saver apps too run in bckgrnd so i suggest u stay on a stable rom wiv a custum kernel like siyah or neak an watch the batt in better batt stat.....wen i need more juice i switch to airplane mode in nite then rebot in the morning....i don hav any tweaks or uv,oc but ive seen the batt is very good wen i don use the data or wifi or download or update,pm me if any doubt......cheeeerz
You flashed different ROMs the last days? First thing is you should only flash with full battery and after flashing it needs some time (three full battery cycles e.g.) untill the battery works fine for the ROM.
And you may recallibrate your battery. Turn the mobile off and load the battery to full. Then go to CWM and reset your batterystats. Now unload till the mobile goes of and reload to full with mobile off. If you doe this for e.g. 3 times the battery should be recalibrated.
I must say Omegas ICS + Speedmod or Siyahs Kernel. Best ever. Or checkout Paradoxxxs rom very stable but for me not so good xD

bro, 20 hours is with 99% deep sleep is seriously wrong. better battery stats cant tell me nothing, since i have no wakelocks or whatever, and all those battery savers apps, they spent more battery than they can save. when those screenshot is taken, i can tell you for sure, bluetooth, gps, 3g, wifi, auto sync etc everything was turned off. even brightness is 10% (which is even lower than auto brightness settings). anyway thanks for the reply

nope, i always try at least 5-6 battery cycles after flashing to see the real graph. and i've read in this forum somewhere, calibrating battery by deleting batterystats is useless for this phone.

speedmod is a kernel like siyah rite? i've use siyah before, but it doesn't seem like much help. nonetheless, will try them ^^
thanks for all the replies and recommendation, will try different rom & update again (probably in 4-5 days for trying 2 roms
I have exactly same problem. On GB over night(7 hours), battery consumption was around 9%. On ICS more than 20%, but nobody touch phone. I try few roms: wanamlite, omega, bezke, pure. Now i have hydrogen. Better battery stats shows nothing special. Only thing what i can think is wi-fi. if i turn off seams to be better, not that dramatic, but anyway not that good like on GB.
strange...
let me ask this... what does the yellow color in the phone signal mean? anybody got any clue?
shouldn't it be green/gray ?
in my phone whenever i have green/gray in the battery view the bar hardly goes down on idle but i see a big drain compared to green/gray when it becomes yellow even in idle
let me post a pic to clarify...
i was complaining about sudden batt drop on cm9 ics, i know its 2 diff roms but still the yellow bar got my attention in both pics...
just searched google and came up with red= no signal, yellow=very bad signal to no signal, green = good signal/full
bad signal makes the phone look for the signal in a bad way using a lot of the battery...
guess i found out why my batt suddenly dropped so bad compared to the rest of the bar...
id suggest flashing a couple of modems and testing how good of a signal u get with each and sticking with the one that works for u, if its a weak signal from the provider then find a better provider that covers ur place with better reception...
start from there and then if batt life is still bad search search and search... best of luck with ur phone...
@mazroui
in those 7 hours your phone should lost 9 - 10% of battery, but not more than 20 unused, what is process causing that usage?
for me: i charged phone before sleep, when wake up after 7h i had 20% left.
Android OS - 92% , rest for cell standby, phone idle and screen. Wi-fi was setup to sleep when screen is off. Better batery stats show that wi-fi was on for almost whole time
Cell Standby and Phone Idle using that much of your power means that the signal in your area is horrible and the phone is struggling to maintain a decent connection with the towers, this can drain a tremendous amount of battery depending on how bad the signal really is, the yellow bar means it's not optimal but there is a large degree of variation between the top end and bottom end of the yellow bar spectrum. Try a different modem or move your phone to an area with better reception and see if you still get this sort of drain.
Android OS is misreported by practically every Kernel because for some reason Samsung accidentally made Screen On add to the Android OS bar, so your Android OS usage is actually AOS + Screen On, for the most part high AOS usage can be ignored as a source of drain using the phone info battery screen, I would look elsewhere for the problem. Sometimes rogue apps hide their wake locks in another wake lock, for instance if you have facebook or many of the IM programs on your system, they poll their servers a lot causing a kernel wake lock called 'svnet dormancy' (in gb) or 'multipdp' (in ics) this causes a lock of 5s to ensure proper packet transfer, if your app is requesting packets every 4 seconds, then its essentially a permanent wake lock but may not be reported as the app being the source.

There is a defect with Android where good signal strength is mis-reported on this screen as yellow, even if you have 100% signal.
Until you go to About Phone > Status, just once. Then when you go back to this screen, it will start reporting as green if you have good signal.
I've tested this out on my phone, and confirmed it... try it out yourself.
I stopped caring about it, so I just ignore it unless it gets reported as red.

Signal in my area is far from perfection, but in same location, on GB i had 9% consumed over night, but not 70 %. I turn off GPS, BT, leave only wi-fi and data. And over night when nobody touch phone, screen is off.

If you look at the graph in the right pic you can see that the curve is less severe when WiFi is active, while this doesn't prove my point that its a network issue it does increase my suspicion that the issue is mobile data related.

Something is horribly wrong with that. Do a full wipe. If it still does that, reflash your firmware. If it STILL does that, maybe flash to a newer stock ICS firmware? Then as a last resort, you may want to go back to GB.

This guy may be onto something, actually. First thing you should try is flashing a different modem. THEN do all the stuff I said above.
EDIT: just noticed you're in Oz. Try flashing a T modem. Most Australian users report much better results with both battery and signal after doing this.

[Q] Huge battery drain on use has started last week. [Kinda Solved]

Hello everyone, I'm using Motorola Atrix with Epinter CM10 4.1 ROM for last 2 months, I was very happy with battery life. Phone wasn't getting hot and with normal usage, even with 3G on (in my country only options are 2G and 3G), I could get %40 of battery end of the day. But for no reason, phone has started to get hot (only 2G on) and drains battery really quickly for last 1 week. I can't even get %5 battery left from morning to evening now. I didn't change anything, only installed Adobe Flash 11.1, then I deleted it but nothing has changed. Phone gets into deep sleep no problem with that, no background apps. I did a virus scan both on phone and from computer, both came out clean. I reinstalled rom. Nothing. I'm gonna crash my phone against wall it's really annoying. I think I'm gonna do factory wipe and reinstall rom again.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Do you leave wifi switched on at all times?
I use MIUI on my Atrix (partially based on epinter's work, I believe? Correct me if I'm wrong), but I have found that the phone suddenly starts staying awake for no apparent reason a while (often a couple of days) after I've left wifi switched on. This obviously causes bad battery drain. I can usually get the phone to sleep again by rebooting with wifi switched off (I think) and a battery pull is invariably required.
I now just switch on wifi when I have large files to download then turn it off straight afterwards.
Not sure if it is the same issue or not, but Better Battery Stats (which can be downloaded on xda) indicated the Rilj process was stopping the phone from sleeping when this problem occurred. It is worth trying this app to see if it gives any indication what is causing your battery drain.

No I switch between mobile data and wifi. Thank you for your suggestions and opinions but I really don't think my problem is about sleep. It started to get hot and drain when I actually use the phone. For example, I was checking Twitter for 10 min. with 3G and battery was dropping %1. Now it drops %5 with 2G on and gets really hot like 35-37 Celsius degree. I'm using Watchdog to oversee processes and nothing is working without my knowledge on background.
Hi,
I have the same problem on the nottachtrix roms since the last 2 weeks, I tried switching to epinter cm10 with no luck. Ordered a new battery to check if the battery is dead or if the atrix is faulty
if you find a fix, please post it here

install gsam battery monitor to see your phone's awake time. this drain happens to me also when i listen to music or take a photo. something with mediaserver keeps the phone awake and then only thing to do is kill mediaserver or a reboot.
Regardless of which other apps you are using to monitor app and process usage, I'd recommend trying Better Battery Stats as this is much more detailed and low-level than other apps I've encountered.
It's a free download for xda members:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
Little update.
I turned back to factory settings, then did a full wipe, cache wipe, dalvik wipe. I was so annoyed I even did system wipe manually from advanced options in recovery. I reinstalled Epinter CM10 rom, got my apps back thanks to Titanium Backup. Installed GSAM (thanks to saldirai), downloaded SetCpu and chose Nvidia Tegra 2 T20/AP20H, underclocked to 912 mhz. Couldn't done any undervolting sadly, says something about governor.
Now I'm checking battery stats and temperature by GSAM, so far no complaints and better from yesterday BUT I haven't use my phone heavily yet. Temperature changes between 26-31 Celsius degrees, battery drops %1-2 percent on use -also it needs calibration- with only wifi use which is always on. I'll update this post if anything changes.
Update: I think I've found the problem. When I choose The Weather Channel widget to "use my location" phone immediately starts to get warm. Weird point is, this wasn't an issue before. Apart from that I'm playing New Star Soccer and Carmageddon for 3-4 hours with wi-fi full time on and battery drops to %30. I'm really happy about that. Normal battery temperature is about 25-32 during the day and different from before it quickly gets cold after I stop playing games. Just like before.
