could be one of a few things wrong. from the information your giving....................
kies unsupported firmware???.......are your drivers updated? uninstall and re install updated
as far as the recovery error.....what is the error?.........status 7 says your recovery needs updating. most are using TWRP now instead of CWM
you said you are familiar with rooting, but is the Note rooted? though you don't have to be rooted to flash
maybe its just me, I play it more safe than most, but why wouldn't someone just get the upgrade officially through Samsung. you get the firmware and drivers in same place. then if something were to go wrong, its not your fault.
Ignore the firmware message and follow the instructions outlined by 440bro in this post. Easiest way to update to stock 4.1.2.

I am having trouble resetting the flash counter on my AT&T Galaxy Note I717 phone. I have downloaded the counter reset.zip file I have found on the XDA website and I copied the .zip file on to the phone and rebooted in to the recovery mode and then selected the .zip file and it keep aborting. I keep getting a error
E:signature verification error
install aborted.
What am I doing wrong to get this to rest? Since I have had this phone I have updated it to the ICS rom that is on the XDA website and the converted back to the AT&T GB rom that is on this web site using the Odin program. Now when I hook my Galaxy Note to my pc and use the Kies software to sync my phone I see under Firmware info it says that "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies." Then is shows the firmware as PDA:LA1/PHONE:LC5/CSC:LA1 (ATT). Is this the correct firmware I should have with this phone? I am back to the GB Rom 2.3.6. I did not back up the factory rom before I did an upgrade to ICS.

Just checked my stock GB rooted w/CWM on Kies and it shows PDA:LA1 / Phone:LA1 / CSC:LA1 (ATT). Maybe you have the incorrect radio modem installed?

[REF] Start up guide for rooting, recovery, ROMs, de-brick, and tether updated 04/2
section. then I downloaded the AT&T kernal and GB rom that I found.

Not sure if the incorrect radio is your issue or not, maybe someone else can chime in. Check this thread for stock radio

Thanks that fixed the Kies issue not seeing the correct firmware. Now all I need to do is to figure out how to rest the flash download counter. It keeps failing when I copy the .zip file to the phone and go to the recovery and then I select the .zip file and then it fails. Not sure what I am doing wrong or if I need to have some other file to reset the counter.

I just for got to do it untill it was to late. I have already installed ICS rom I found on this XDA site when I knew I for got to back it up. Its just one of those thing I guess. I am also still kind of new to install ROM's and unlocking the phones. But I have it figured out now. My phone is back to normal. I am on GB 2.3.6 and I have the correct stock raido software and every thing. The only thing that I am running is the touch version of the Clockworknod. I was able to reset the flash counter and every thing. The only thing I have to question since I had to run the Clockworkmod to reset the flash counter is how do I get back to the orginial recovery rom with out raising the flash counter? I had to use the the ClockWorkMod to reset the flash counter is because I keept getting a siginature verification error when I put the reset flash counter on my phone and then booted in to recovery and then ran the .zip file and it kept on giving me an error. So all is well now. Now waiting for the ICS OTA to come out.
I have searched and searched and cannot find a solution. Here is my problem. I bought a note 2 weeks ago. I updated to ICS through kies. At the very end of the update my pc had a blue screen of death and reset on me. The update seemed to take though as I was on ICS when I checked my android version. So I proceeded to install cmw and root my phone. I had been noticing some issues regarding uninstalling downloaded apps. I decided to connect to kies again and lo and behold I received a message saying that the update had not completed and I needed to do an emergency firmware recovery. Well, since my phone was rooted kies wouldnt do it. So, instead I decided to try to install official ICS (I717UCLF6_I717ATTLF6_I717UCLF6_HOME.tar.md5) through odin. It fails every time. It goes all the way to the end and fails on (write).
I decided to take my note back to stock GB and see if that may help. I got it back to stock using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506330 and on download mode it showed custom binary: yes and current binary:custom also the flash counter read 4. I am however back to GB. I tried kies and it still says that my phone cant be upgraded through kies. This is what it says under current firmware version: PDA:LA1 / PHONE:LF6 / CFC:LF6 (ATT).
Next I tried installing cmw on the stock build and resetting the flash counter in hopes that kies would then be able to upgrade. Since doing that download mode now shows custom binary: no current binary: official samsung and no flash counter. However, I am still unable to upgrade through kies (still says my device cannot be upgraded through kies) or the flashable odin tar (I717UCLF6_I717ATTLF6_I717UCLF6_HOME.tar.md5) still fails at the end when it has to write.
I just want official ics on my phone. I really hope someone can help me. I am very sorry if this has been answered, I hope you can see that I have done some searching and exhausted any options that I have found. Thank you in advance.

Thx for your response. I did see that thread and gave the kies suggestion a go earlier, however kies kept crashing.
At this point i may just flash a custom rom. Any suggestions? Looking for something ics with touchwiz.
Just wanted to provide a little more info. I am at&t. Also, in the thread i refernced with the stock gb tar there is also a few other files underneath. Stock kernel only odin tars, one of which is for at&t. I did not install that. Also, cwm is still installed on the phone. Can that be whats causing kies to reject the device?
Looks like you have the GB rom and ICS radio and that's why Keis is not recognizing your rom. Flash the stock GB radio from the dev section and Keis should update. If not, you should be able to perform emergency firmware restore through Keis. There is a thread in the general section that details how to enter your serial number, etc.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1731654
This procedure should put you on the latest firmware regardless of root or what you currently have installed.
You could flash one of the debloated official ICS ROMs.
I'm not sure but I think Bigfau has the complete official posted. Flappjaxxx has a nice one also

I went with bigfau. I installed the better stock ics rom. Works like a charm. Thank you to those that replied.
I am wanting to go back to stock (no root) and would like to update to official ICS from ATT. I have successfully gone back to 2.3.4 GB but have searched and searched trying to find either the last version of GB or the latest ICS. I read that I should be able to update through Kies but it just says I am at the latest version and OTA updates will not work on the phone. Again, I am just looking for a customer odin flashable stock ICS image or at least get to a version that I can get back on the ATT updates. Thanks.
There is an option in kies to force the update by putting in your imei number or something to that affect I can't remember it was a long while ago when I tried it. Do a Google search with xda kies ICS upgrade.
I believe it is the emergency restore option in Kies and you need to put in your model (SGH-I777) and serial # from the battery compartment.

Thanks! I will give it a shot tonight when I get home.
I attempted to run the emergency firmware recovery option without success. Only option I have under tools > firmware upgrade and initialization is to go to the same version.
I just found this post, currently downloading the firmware. It is showing the ICS firmware upgrade.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1727109
Worked like a charm. I was messing up by trying to choose the firmware upgrade and initialization option with the phone plugged in. You have to do it when the phone unplugged, enter your model and S/N, then plug the phone in. After the software downloads you have to remove the cable, shut off the phone and go into download mode. Then it is all waiting from there. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
Awesome!
I just use ODIN on my PC and the .tar file that contains the Samsung/AT&T 4.0 when ever I want to go back.
Which will never happen but have had some minor thoughts about it..
Not a bad idea to see just how good you've got it on custom ROMs

If Im on Gingerbread, can i root it and install CMW for it, then upgrade to an ICS/JellyBean custom rom through it or must I update to official ICS rom first through odin (because of bootloader issues(?))?

The stickies have the information u need to root and get started flashing.
I picked up a Verizon Galaxy S4 today, and it installed the OTA update.
Tonight I tried to root the phone, and it did not work, and now I can't get the phone to start back up. It gives me the "firmware update encountered an issue message."
I can get the phone into download mode, but I haven't been able to install a stock rom using ODIN. I think maybe I'm using the wrong ROM.
What should I be doing?

You're probably using the wrong ROM.
Which OTA? What baseband were you on prior to and after the OTA? What errors did you see in ODIN and on the phone.
If you were on MJ7 and updated to MK2, then you should be able to flash the MJ7 no-wipe ROM to recover.
Failing that, install Samsung Kies and use it to recover your phone.
Hi guys,
I am trying to help someone get their phone back to stock. It's a verizon galaxy note 2 and all the information I have is that they tried to root or rom it and now it doesn't start (and to get it to boot you have to remove/put in the battery)
I'm following droidstyle's guide and I can get as far as starting the odin flash process to stock, but it goes for a few minutes and then I just get a FAIL.
UPDATE1: So I tried again but with the root66 stock VRALJB and it passed but I'm getting the system software not authorized message. I'll keep trying some things..
Anyway I can get this thing up and running again?
UPDATE2: I'm flashing the stock roms semi-successfully, but even after a PASS on the flash, I get the "Verizon has detected unauthorized software" message. Any ideas?

What version of stock firmware was on the phone when the person tried to root it? If it was mj9 4.3 or above you will have to flash the version that was installed through Odin to get it to work. The bootloader starting in mj9 4.3 doesn't allow to downgrade to previous version.

Good question. He doesn't really know as he was even newer to this than I am (I've done it on a couple phones in the past only a few times, so I do kinda have the hang of it, but this phone's a bit different).
Can I just try flashing 4.3 or above and see if that works? What would be the way to go if I don't know what was flashed previously?
