will the htc thunderbolt be fully flashable to cricket yes or no
I'm sure there is a switch under the battery Criket<>Verizon ... I never got why you would pay 700 for a phone just to save 40 a month and not have 4g and have sub par service... but i'm sure someone will develop a criket rom like the did with the incredible but nothing special

Because after 10 months that 40 turns into 400 and we just paid for the subsidy that ppl are paying for every month for 24 months(40 * 24 = $960) In comparison, after 24 months you get paid $260 for using it on a different network. Sub par service is a matter of opinion...no need to be rude about it, some ppl prefer a frugal alternative.
I guess the thought is that you could buy a cheaper device, and get just as good performance out of it because on Cricket you will never, ever, see any of the 4G speeds that we see.
This thing gets downloads that are consistently as fast as my Home Comcast (15mbps). I have seen some speeds that are double 30+mbps.
I guess what the other poster is thinking is that you could buy a droid 2 or a droid X and basically get the same results. Outside of the 4G LTE speeds, this device is nothing more than a MT4G or Desire HD (same internals). You wouldn't have to spend the extra money for a 4G phone that you will never utilize.
I thought that cricket was signing up for Lightsquared's LTE service? Which I would assume would be the same 700 Mhz our devices run on? I could be wrong, but if cricket did this it seems like it wouldn't be a terrible deal and as op said, he would still save money and actually be able to utilize the service. I doubt they would have the coverage we will, but don't denigrate the dude. He did nothing wrong asked a relevant question. Sorry, this was more directed at two_cents.
I have no idea what frequency Cricket would use, but keep in mind that metroPCS has 4G LTE as well and it is not at all compatible with Verizon 4G LTE. So it may be that the carriers try to distinguish themselves in the near future (especially from value based carriers) based on their phones not being compatible with other networks.
This would have the effect of making you go with one of the Big 3(?) carriers if you wanted a quality smartphone, or pick an inferior or entry level device and go with a prepaid carrier.
Yeah, I know metro's is different, but I was thinking that, which I could be remembering wrong, that LS's LTE service was going to be the same 700mhz. Like I said, I could be wrong. This is just what I vaguely remember.

Chips in Crickets?
Been an At&t user since forever. Service is good enough in Savannah and the job pays for it so I haven't had an argument to switch. So, SIM cards in phones have always been the norm. Could switch out my Nokia, Palm, iPhone whenever.
So forgive my ignorance when I ask what the significance of sims appearing in Cricket phones to being able to use the Thunderbolt? I currently use a Huawei on Cricket to play with and it doesn't have a sim. I've seen a Droid X also on Cricket and I don't know whether it has a sim or not.
Personally I wouldnt use a DX or TB on Cricket but for $55 a month (unlimited everything) it's an attractive offer.
Btw, the Huawei is Z4 rooted and has 2.2.1, which ruins the Wifi. But Wifi tethering works great. About 1mb u/d, but worthwhile. My iP4 gets 3+mb down and 1+mb up on 3G even with MyWi. When 4G LTE comes here with big red then I'll probably switch. I looking forward to a 4.3 screen and 2.3GB

I think you are mixing up Cricket for Metro PCS.
also the 700Mhz band is verizons if I am not mistaken, so the band will be different for Lightsquared's LTE unless them roam on verizons network.
No, I know metro has their own LTE service, that is not on the same bandwidth ours. Reading further into the lightsquared's frequency range they are on three bands. 1.4 1.6 and 2.0. So, yes I was wrong about it about the TB working on crickets network if they partnered with LS, but I wasn't talking about MPCS. I thought that I had saw where LS was running on the 700 mhz band with VZW. Not sure where I pulled that one out of thin air from, because apparently I was way off. Here's where I got my new info.http://www.dailywireless.org/2010/07/20/lightsquared-announces-lte-network/
MPCS runs on the 1700 mhz band.

Since no one has yet answer the original question... I'm a professional cell phone tech normally all Verizon phones can be flashed to cricket HOWEVER Verizon has decided to use identification cards similar to Sim cards for their service starting with the thunderbolt and all future Verizon 4g phones. I have yet to attempt to flash a thunderbolt I will try Monday however I'm fairly confident without the id card it will not work on cricket. The card is what stores registration info for the network now VERY similar to a Sim. I'm doubting a flash will work but I will repost tomorrow with my results.

Your correct there is no way to load a .prl on the phone without a sim unless theres another way. For the rest of the off topic posts you pay for what you get
Yeah, the SIM card makes this impossible at the moment.
possibly
Its possible because cricket will be getting 4G LTE sometime at the end of this year or early next. But it also depends if it works the same as Verizon's.
The Thunderbolt has officially been flashed to cricket with Talk and Text and hopefully data to come. I flashed it yesterday and i can make and recieve calls and texts atm so wish me luck to get data working

I think some have bad modems (just a hunch). I was just at my cor store because my speeds have been weak. Got a new sim, same speeds. Put my sim in my N1 and did a speed test against the floor model GS2. Out of 5 speed tests, my N1 was faster 3 out of the 5 (one by. 5Mbps and one by 1.1Mbps). That should not happen! I also put my sim in an Atrix and hit 6Mbps and the store manager even hit 7.2Mbps on his Atrix.
Anyone else noticing only 3G speeds on their GS2? I know its not my sim or my plan.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
I have the exact same problem. I called att and made sure that I was on the correct plan. I changed APN settings with no change in speeds. It seems that the international version doesn't have this problem so im inclined to think that it's software.
I also had an atrix for comparsion and it had no problems hitting 6-8 Mbps..
I'm getting the exact same (crappy) speeds I was getting on my Infuse. Obviously that doesn't prove anything since they're both Samsung hardware/software but it's definitely not an exclusive problem to the GS2.
I'm glad I'm not the only one getting these results. The question is, how do we go about fixing this? Can we flash the international modem? I doubt AT&T will care...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
if someone can point me to the file ill gladly be a guinea pig
Modems from the international GS2 will not work.
People have accidentally flashed them before - they always lose data.
If you've got an earlier release of codeworkx's kernel, the TCP buffers are way too small. Newer releases have better values.
I talked to AT&T this morning. Two Level 2 techs were not aware of this issue and basically told me to call Samsung. So, the level 1 tech put me on hold to call Samsung. They too were not aware of the issue. So the tech is going to get both teams to look into the issue, but no word on when or if it'll be fixed.
This is the second time stupid AT&T burned me on a phone. First the Atrix and now the GS2. I love the phone, simply the best I've ever used, but this is a serious deal breaker. My N1 should NOT pull better speeds. Crossing my fingers AT&T and Samsung pull their heads out of their rear and get it updated before my 30 days are up.
Sad day!

Did anyone experience slow data speeds on WiFi, too? Or just cellular? I still have some weird software data lag thing. I'll be connected to WiFi and the phone will refuse to load a page randomly (after a little bit of nonuse) -- so I disconnect and reconnect to WiFi and it works.
Edit: going to hope this new update with new modem solves issue.
I have an i9100 right now and run data on the non-smartphone unlimited plan. I've only had the i9100 since October, but I'm thinking of eBay'ing it and getting the S3.
My question is, would I be better served to wait for the AT&T version so I could get LTE or just get the i9300, live with slower non-wifi speeds and enjoy a new, unlocked, unfettered phone?
AT&T prevented the One X from unlocking their bootloader; to me, that already says enough.

LTE is awesome, i have the skyrocket and Galaxy Note LTE versions. and they are super fast on the network, but i am bypassing the LTE and going the international SGS3 because i know that At&t is going to butcher this device stateside. not that it wont be fast.....but i want something un tainted by them......at least till the NOTE2 comes out, then i will all over that LTE phone....lol

LTE is great! But you need to weigh it against the cost of having it.
In no short order, to obtain LTE on AT&T, you must:
Give up the incredible Exynos quad.
Deal with ATT bloat.
Deal with ATT hard-branding.
Deal with ATT redesign (likely losing the physical home button).
Deal with ATT kernels/firmware and potentially locked down components.
Have less dev support (international versions always attract more devs-- myself included).
Be locked into using only ATT (or paying for a SIM unlock code).
Deal with (usually much) slower official OS updates and patches.
Know that you're "in the system" at ATT because they have your IMEI.
Deal with having no idea when the device is actually going to be released.
I'm sure I missed some.
So, how badly do you really want a faster cell connection?
Hopefully that helps you.

Great points, makes me feel even better about importing the S3 esp since this will be my first time doing so.
Also, a few have mentioned you can downgrade your data plan to medianet and save $ since the Int. S3's IMEI won't be in the ATT database & it's not considered a "smart" phone.
I will be happy to have the "home" button back since using my ATT Note that lacks it.

Yes, and yes HSPA+ which is being called 4G but is not LTE. Have LTE on my Note and while it's fast it sucks the life out of a battery. Will not give up quad core just to be on a LTE Bloated devices.
I usually get 1 or 2 down and right around 1 up which is more than fast enought to stream videos, internet works great, etc. Not that it matters to me anyways because my LTE connection speed is zero, there is no LTE in my area and it appears it is still several years away. Makes it a no brainer really... lol
Once you go LTE its kinda hard to go back to HSPA+
if you have wifi constantly its a no brainer.
Able to surf the web and stream HD videos on the road is very satisfying.
that's why Im so torn if i should get the unlock or wait for the LTE version.

I disagree, personally. I had my Note LTE for a few months that I just sold last week and have since been using the HSPA+ Atrix until the S3 is released. The LTE was great, mind you, and sometimes I had speeds up to ~50 down. Honestly though, the HSPA+ speeds I'm getting now are noticeably slower, but only when I'm actually downloading something. Really, that's usually only podcasts and app updates anymore, and the speed difference in the end usually nets to an extra ~10-15 seconds of waiting. I have zero issues streaming HD video and music to my phone with HSPA+, so the LTE would literally do nothing for me in that case (except for perhaps consuming more battery).
With data caps, it's even less of an issue. You wouldn't want to be downloading any large files over the cell network in either case, so you'll end up on WiFi for that stuff whether you're LTE-equipped or not.
Furthermore, the LTE radios right now are so power-hungry that I wasn't very comfortable using it on my Note. You actually use a lot less power with your WiFi radio ON.
Put that all together and weigh it against the benefits of importing the international variant. For me personally, that's the "no-brainer."
To me its not for a couple reason, 1.) We dont have LTE where I live 2.) Only time I use data is to send picture/video messages otherwise I'm always wireless. Also agree with everyone else on the ATT front, they really do ugly the thing up. I'd also rather have a quad-core than LTE. I'm a hardware over network guy.

Err, it's hardly 3.99G when 4G mandates 1Gbps and LTE can still fall into the "single digit Mbps".
Well were I live LTE is about 8mbs up/down on AT&T and H+ is 3-5mbs down and 1 up so no big deal for me. That non RGB 720p screen is, but I am still thinking about it.
I was on ATT before with 3G before, but not LTE and I haven't looked at their plan for a while. Can someone explain to me:
When you sign up for their LTE plan, do you get 3G also or no?
If no, can you also buy 3G and how much more is it?
If you can't have 3G free with LTE I think its not so good, especially if you are not living in a well coverage area, which 3G still has a wider coverage.

Thats my point, what if you have an LTE phone and your area don't have LTE, or you go out of town to an area without LTE, and you have no 3G plan. You'll be stuck with 2G.
Well, first I'd like to say hello and introduce myself, since this is my first post on XDA-devs. I'm Dave, from North Georgia and I've had dozens of phones over the years, from the Nokia 6340i, to the Motorola MPX220, to the Blackberry Bold 9650, to the iPhone 3GS, to the Motorola Droid Bionic, and now to the Samsung Galaxy S II that I am currently rocking. I don't really know all that much about developing stuff, but I'm good at following instructions and I know enough about how things work, or shouldn't work, to be a good guinea pig (A.K.A. Alpha/Beta Tester).
Now that that's out of the way, on to my review of Straight Talk on my Galaxy S II:
I got the Galaxy S II from eBay on April 30th, and ordered a SIM for an AT&T branded phone from Straight Talk which came a couple days later. One thing to note, is that Straight Talk makes you sign for the SIM in person with FedEx, and I missed the FedEx man for two days because of work, so I drove to the FedEx facility to sign for and pick up the SIM, before they returned it to Straight Talk. That's pretty annoying in a rural area like mine, since the facility is over an hour away from my house. Luckily, that's my only complaint with Straight Talk.
I put the SIM in, set the APN settings with the info that ST provides with the SIM, and then went online on my Bionic to setup my account, and ported my number, right in the FedEx parking lot. Took about 10 minutes and the hardest part was finding my Verizon account number to port my number. The GSII started getting a HSPA+ data signal within a few minutes, and I ran a speed test, and got about 6 mbps down and 2 mbps up. I tried calling and SMS and that all worked fine. About 10 - 15 minutes after I ported my number, everything was working properly.
The phone and service has worked flawlessly since then except for the time I put a ROM on and forgot re-setup the APN. Easy fix though. I'm currently running SHOstock2 v3.0.4 and I love it. I've tried several ROMs, all of which work nice, but SHOstock2 feels more natural to me than any of the others. I've been using Shostock2 for nearly 3 weeks, and it has been great. The ROM and the phone itself have been rock solid!
My bill is 46.xx a month(I can't remember what the change is), and I've used a little over 2 gigs of data, sent several thousand texts and talked for several hundred minutes, and so far, I think I've picked a winner. Sure beats paying Verizon $98-$110(after 16% corp discount) a month for a flaky at best Droid Bionic...
I've just got to say, this Galaxy S II has been the best phone I've ever used by a good margin. If anyone has any questions, comments or suggestions, please feel free to ask them. It is pretty late for me, so I'm sure I'm forgetting something.
Have a nice night,
~Dave

As far as I'm aware you won't need an unlocked phone for this. Just an AT&T branded phone. My GSII was unlocked when I bought it, because I tried a T-Mobile prepaid SIM and it worked fine. I don't have data on that account, so I couldn't try that, plus it would of only been EDGE anyway. I couldn't tell you which phone to get, but I like Android phones myself, and the GSII is hard to beat. I've used 4 Android phones, the HTC EVO, the Motorola Droid X2, the Motorola Droid Bionic, and now the Galaxy S II, and the GSII blows the others away!

Go to Straight Talk's Website(I don't have a high enough post count to post links yet), then click Shop, and then SIM Cards.
Then, select the AT&T Compatible Phone radio button this site, and then it lets you select a standard Mini-SIM and the ewer Micro-SIM.
And there you go.

Depending on the SIM you buy (AT&T or T-Mobile) you use the towers of that carrier. So, I have the same reception as any AT&T customer. The only limiting factor is, and I've only heard this, I haven't had a chance to verify it, but you are limited to 7mbps because of the att.mvno APN that Straight Talk uses. There's no "4G" AT&T HSPA+ in my area, only the "3G" variety, according to the coverage map, so I've highest I've seen is 5.5 mbps down and 2.3 mbps up using speed tests. I'm going to a "4G" area soon, so I will test it there. So, it's not the 30mbps/3mbps that I got with Verizon's LTE network, but it's also half the price, and a lot less BS to deal with.
Thank you for this thread. I've been strongly considering this for a while. The feedback on Straight Talk is appreciated!

Yeah, I'd get 15-30 mbps every LTE test from the Bionic. I think 32mbps was the fastest I'd seen. Even 15 - 25 when Wi-Fi tethered to a laptop. And really nice(for wireless) 65 - 80 ms latency too. But on EVDO, which is all my hometown has, I never saw above 1.8mbps, so I doubled to tripled my data speeds at home now.

Will definitely look at this when my contract is up.
Quick question for anyone who may know - looking at ST's Coverage Area, can someone explain to me what is the difference between Android and non-Android coverage map?
Straight Talk uses AT&t towers so the service should be the same. A few things to consider. ST doesnt allow tethering, streaming music or video. If you go over 2gb a month for data you will get a text from them and after that they will cut your service off!!! You will lose your number!!!!! Remember that! They have never made it clear when they will cut you off but from reading other posts it has come to the conclusion its 2 gb or a 100 mg a day. But if you can live with all that it cant be beat! My bill is 47 and change for the same service I was paying over 80 for. Im happy with ST. Just like here...Google is your friend. Search for more info. Good info on HoFo. Dont want to post another link to another forum. Hope some of this info was helpful.

That Android map is for the ST branded Android phones, which up until a few days ago only used Sprint's network. You can tell by looking on the box and it will say what network it uses in the bottom corner. In those Android phone's case, the box says "CDMA-S" but they have just now released Android phones that say "CDMA-V" on the box, because they use Verizon's network. For GSM phones it depends on the SIM you buy.

A couple of screen shots from last night, showing speed tests from a "4G" HSPA+ area, as shown on AT&T's coverage map(the second pic was after I rebooted the phone, just to make sure I had enough RAM to properly run the flash based test.)
By the way, does anyone else notice the glitch?
I've been doing this for a year and some odd months. I had an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S i9000 on Straight Talk for a while (using a Straight Talk Nokia e71 SIM) since last year, then then they introduced the SIM only package, I bought an AT&T iPhone 4 from Craigslist and bought the microSIM from Striaght Talk. The smartphone doesn't need to be unlocked! If you have an AT&T smartphone, choose that option when buying the SIM. If you have a TMobile smartphone, choose that option. I have since changed phones, but kept the microSIM, and using a miniSIM adapter, have it in a Galaxy S2 i777. Couldn't be happier! Sure, I'm in edge most times when using data, but I've got wifi in 95% of the places I go..

Straight Talk uses AT&t towers so the service should be the same.

Actually, they use every networks towers in some way. There are CDMA [verizon network] straight talk phones (feature, not smartphones - I have one). There are AT&T and TMobile SIMs for use on each network. And their android phones they sell run off of Sprint..
Good Morning!
I'm in the midst of trying to decide the best course to follow - I use T-Mobile prepaid for the data / messaging plans since I rarely talk on the phone; with the official T-Mobile branded handset coming out next week I'm stuck deciding whether to buy an unlocked ATT Galaxy Note or wait it out for the T-Mobile one to be available. I don't plan to sign any contracts so I'll have to pay outright (street price or store depending)
I know the major difference between the ATT Note and TMO version is the fact the ATT one has the 21 mbps hspa+ antennas versus the TMO one having the full fledged 45mbps antennas
while 5mb d/l is nothing to scoff at (ample for my use) I suppose more is better - but is it worth owning a 'more flexible' hanset that can run tmo/att/lte versus a tmo only handset?
thanks for your help in deciding!
Sorry Mods, as you can see I read more than I post - this can move to the Q&A forum if you see fit
wait for the tmobile one
you wont need to flash no modem to get 3G/4G service.
You also won't have to worry about charging the ATT version every 3 hours and worry about the phone heating up. I had the ATT one and I hated it for those two reasons.

Many members have had troubles with flashing the t-mobile modem on the att note.
I had t-mobile data plans for many years and liked the speed and no contract.
I would wait one week for sure.

the TMO version won't be any different, if you had to charge the ATT ver. every 3 hrs, which is absurd, mine last me most of the day on one charge, you will also have to do the same thing with the TMO ver. since the specs are the same and so is the battery.

Don't mind me, but after 4 months and avery ROM available, this hasn't happened to me. At worst I get 8 hours, but that's not stop phone, text, ebook, facebook, nand-backup ROM flashing and restore.
OK, the question: As I said I've been on the Note with tmobile for 4 months. data is poor....not horrible, but poor - but I'm at home on wifi most o the time, so it shouldn't bother me. Shouldn't is the operative word - thinks like this drive me to distraction.
So.....if I find the note 2 is being released, I'm going to hope t-mobile will offer it. Don't get too excited, it was something like 8 months between S, S2 & S3, so sometime in Q2 '13 seems about right.
Of course I'd have to take it on a leap of faith on after the announcement of the note 2 that T-Mo might get it and 8 months is a long time, assuming I'm anywhere near right.
Oh, my druthers: If everything were equal, I'd want the T-Mo version (cost wise).

Not only that, they run on different radio frequencies.

The Note is pentaband, so techincally both the ATT and Tmo models are capable of running on each others' networks (provided you flash the correct modem).
The main reason some folks will probably stick with the ATT Note (myself included) is because of grandfathered data plans. For example, I still have the T-Zones data plan which I've had since the voicestream days...and basically get full unlimited internet (3G speeds) at under $10 a month. Granted, the speeds are probably not as fast as the normal $20-$30 plans, it suits my purposes just fine.
If you have one of the more recent standard Tmo plans, then I suggest going for the Tmo note, as it'll basically work right out of the box for you. I'm sticking with my ATT Note and hopefully when the Tmo radio gets leaked here it'll fix the terrible upload speeds and bad voice connection I experience now. *fingers crossed*
I've been spared from the terrible voice problems so many have experienced, just typical data slow downs.
Of course one could buy from cl or eBay, which would void the warranty, then again I'all be doing that on my own.
thanks all for the advice and tips - i did lots of reading as well into handling tmo radios etc to get the ATT version to run TMO properly
I did buy a ATT Note yesterday (the price was right) and I figured why not try it out right?
the Note is already running the S3 Rom with a few tweaks iirc, the seller had a local service mod it a few weeks back
without flashing the modem, just inputting the network unlock code (cellunlocker had it in 2hrs) a speedtest on 4G showed only ~150k d/l speed and after flashing the icsblaze.zip modem I had ~400k d/l speeds, so that's a little imrovement...
If i can get a solid 2mb d/l I'll be fine since I'm around wifi pretty often, but for the times I'm not...well...
I'm in the process of dl'ing Flapjaxx's ICS build and have an assortment of ICS radios (better check if they are in fact the ICS flavors or not) to try out
Thanks again XDA! what an awesome community
I've been using ATT note on Tmo for the same reason (grandfather in tzone). I am just waiting for a solid radio coming from Tmo Note.
I'll most likely be using an unlocked one. My brother got one for free (I think it was a friends) and we unlocked it. When the T-Mo version come out he'll upgrade and I will too from my G2. I use Wi-Fi when I'm at home or anywhere that has it for that matter so I don't think the slow(er) data speeds will bother me that much. As long as calls are okay then I'm good.
T-Mobile Note also will work on AT&T HSPA+ Network.

I would wait for the tmobile version. My unlocked Note with the tmobile radio had spotty connection. One minute, I'm getting 2MB, the next serveral hours, i'm getting 112kb or it does not work at all.
Also when 4GB is running, the backside of the phone (below the camera) heats up a lot. Almost to a point I had to put the note down and let it cool off by turning off the network data. So it's working really hard to maintain 4GB and eating up the battery. It doesn't happen on wifi.
the only reason why I would want the At&t version is because of the white note and lower price.
I'm fine using my at&t version. If it's the same hardware I don't see a big reason to switch.

Only reason I would get the tmo note would be for the wifi calling feature.. Then again it might be possible to flash tmo note stock ROM on unlocked att now and have the wifi calling feature, guess we will find out the 8th or soon after
