Just wanted to share some tips to those who wanted to re-enable the Mass Storage Mode on their Android 4.2.2
1. Connect your phone to a computer (The device will be connected in MTP mode as default)
2. Reboot your phone while connected to the computer
3. Wait until you see the USB icon on your Notification Bar
4. You will now have an option to select Mass Storage henceforth
:cyclops:
I'd appreciate a "THANKS" if this helps you.

Thanks!!! Confirmed working on Legacy Xperia JB 4.3 :highfive:
Nope this does not work as advertised in the OP. Neither is there a "USB mass storage" option anywhere in the device's settings. Thanks anyhow.
Update: still no. I rebooted several times. No joy. I tried rebooting into recovery mode-- disabled if it's connected to a PC. Still no.

Will this option work for jelly bean 4.2.1?
No joy. This either never worked or this trick is obsolete. I have plain stock kitkat 4.4 on my phone (htc one google play ed) and mass storage appears to be completely removed now. stuck with sh!tty MTP/PTP that does not permit transfer of non "media" files. Best solution I can see is getting an SFTP client and xfer over wifi. Why oh why is Google turning evil and doing hacker-hostile and becoming as annoying as Apple?

I feel you. I stopped using anything i[whatever] for any reason because of the stupidity of the storage and transfer software. Now google is doing it. Must join google+ to give feedback on an app? Seriously? Can't access content on my SD card unless the file type meets an arbitrary set of criteria? I'm just waiting for Ubuntu Touch to be ready for an SGH-T989 and I'll dump google next. Either that, or I go back to a damn flip phone and leave all this crap behind.
@bejunk
thanks for the build.prop suggestion, although i cant get the option "MTP, PTP, UMS" in Storage setting, at least i can use UMS...
here's what my opinion;
using MTP;
-faster data transfer
-less reliable; prone to get "cant copy file, phone not responding"
-and if delete file while in phone, connect to PC the file is still there
using UMS;
-slower data transfer
-more reliable than MTP, in my case its secure, no error unless youre "massaging" your phone (blame cable)
-if delete a file while in phone, connect to PC the file is deleted (which is good, no evidence )
UMS is better than MTP in my case
btw, im GT-i9100G SlimKat 4.4.2 (yes, i know this is Sony section)
nope
not working on asus transformer TF701T , thanks anyway

I do not yet have root on my trasformer pad, until last night I thought that UMS was required to get root. I just need to install the fastboot drivers which I thought I had already done. I will update if it turns out I'm wrong (again), all this stuff with the ADB's, fastboot and cmd is confusing me; I have had to root, unroot, wipe, flash etc. loads of times on my galaxy ace but all that had could be done from the phones recovery almost instantly. geuss i'll just have to sort of evolve and get used to it being harder to root and install a recoveries now!
This one worked on my lenovo a369i:
Type these on your Terminal Emulator app:
su
setprop persist.sys.usb.config mass_storage,adb
reboot
Hope this works on yours too.

If you are on Windows: Samsung drivers installed?
Did you try different USB port?
Is USB debugging enabled? Settings->Applications->Development
What are the USB settings on the phone? Settings->Applications->USB settings
Mass storage mode doesn't work for me on Win 7 x64 I just use the media player setting and it works the same way as mass storage should.
It works for me just fine. One time it did do the flickering USB icon thing, but that turned out to be because the cable that I was using was going bad. It sounds like this may be what's going on in your case?
I clipped this from a post I made a few months ago...

For those of you having a problem with Windows 7 recognizing your Vibrant ... here is how I fixed it on my system.
*Note: You do not need to load any special USB drivers for your phone to be recognized in Mass Storage mode in Windows 7.
*Warning: You follow these instructions at your own risk ... no screaming at me if you try it and something gets screwed up!
1) Navigate your way into the Device Manager / Universal Serial Bus Controller
2) Uninstall the device(s) "USB Root Hub" (My system had 2 listed)
3) You will lose mouse and keyboard control (because you just removed the USB Hubs)
4) Reset your PC and allow Windows to boot normally.
5) Go back to the device manager and wait for all of the "!" marks to go away as windows re-installs the USB Hubs and reinitializes all of your devices.
6) Make sure your Vibrant is in mass storage mode and has USB debugging OFF
7) Plug in your Vibrant via the USB cable and be amazed as windows recognizes your device and assigns the drive letters. After you select the mount option on your phone you will have normal access via windows explorer.
Hope this helps some of you out there !!!

Hi,
My USB is behaving really wierd.
If I use USB debug my device is not recognized at al by my computer. With USB debug unchecked it's recognized and I can view and delete files but not transfer any new one. Transfer just results in a timeout saying "device disconnected".
This applies to both the internal and external card.
Tired different cables, different computers and operative systems.
Please help, tired of transfer files via keys air all the time :/

Hey,
when u have the Debugging mode activated and want to see it on PC, u have to hit the notification, which appears when u connect it.
Then press connect USB and it should appear on PC
When u don't use this mode it went in an "Kies-mode" which PC directly recognize.
Or when u go to settings>Wireless etc>USB and press here "Use USB as Masstorage" it's the same like when u press activate on notification while debuggin mode.
Hope I helped a bit ...

Transfer a small file see if that times out .

I know this is not a solution to your problem, but I recommend transferring files over wifi (NOT KIES AIR) which, to me, is much more simpler and better way.
Here is how:
first install free "SwiFTP FTP Server" application from Market
install it and enter desired username and password. Enable wifi and start application.
On your computer or laptop, install some FTP client (I recommend "Filezilla").
Enter user information you previously configured on your smartphone, connect and voila! You know have access to all of your smartphone's files and folders.
Like I said, for me, this is much better and simpler way of transferring files than using USB cable. Give it a try and see.

I would like to know how you solved this issue as I am currently going through the same thing
Hello- USB debugging is turning itself on(putting a check on itself in the settings) automatically as soon as I plug in the USB cord and enable USB storage.
I am using the ROM located at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1442889
Any help is appreciated, thank you!
as far as i see its always enabled in stock roms... and there is nothing to worry about unless you have some virus in pc which will use adb to format phone or steal data

The problem is I can not turn off USB debugging, this is not normal behavior. It automatically turns itself on...
Download ROM Toolbox from Market, go to root browser, build.prop Editor, click the pencil on the extreme upper right type - persist.adb.notify=0 in the end of the textbox. Should solve the problem I think..
Hello,
I just got my i9100 (and surprisingly not a G neither P..!) and i have few questions. It's running on ICS LPW firmware. First I'd like to know how i make sure this is a phone from my country and not another.
Next i'd like to know how to know how to be in UMS mode (mass storage transfer) when i connect the device to the computer, without having to go in settings, plus, usb, mass storage...
I've had a Galaxy Note before and when pluging USB, i just scroll down notifications, select usb and then just switch to UMS... Here selecting USB in the notification bring me to choose either MTP or some photo mode...
Last thing : Is there a way to make the i9100 able to power on some 2'5 external hard drive (i have Western Digital Passport) just like the Galaxy i9300 (SIII) can do? I just tried and nothing happened... Maybe with some other kernel..?
Thanks.

Go to Settings > Wireless & Network > USB utilities and click the button > then (and ONLY then) plug in USB cable

If it acted like secondary Launchers did and you could set it to default easily, then yes. Otherwise I don't know of a way to do that, but really, is going into the status bar and changing it that big of a deal?
AW: Android 4.2.2: Always mass storage mode when I plug in USB?
Just go to settings -> connections -> USB and choose what you would like to do for default

Select Settings>Storage and then select menu(In most phones the menu is the left touch button). Then you can see USB computer connection. Select it and tick Mass Storage. You are done.
4.2.2 does not have that option

I have been going out of my mind ..staying up late trying to figure out why my Galaxy S4 was not being recognized. It seemed like all I was getting was NO where fast. Mostly thinking I had to root and bla bla bla. But this may have been the answer. I just saw the USB symbol pop up on my phone. Fingers Crossed this is the solution

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 (GT-P3113) . Here's the question. Can I use this on it and how do I punch it in? Right now it is A) showing a red x in the battery when plugged in, but still charging; and B) not recognized by my computer when I plug it in there, and yes, I have the correct drivers installed. Thank you.
