[Q] root and unlock problems - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Hi, This question arises after much research and several kernel/rom combination attempts failing.
I have been having problems with the rooting/ROM flashing on several i777 lately. Obviously there are so many different ROMs and kernels. Mostly the ROMs I try are call "ROOTED STOCK ROMS" and custom kernels.
One observation I would really like to express is that NOTHING created by the dev. "ZEDOMAX" has EVER worked for me.!!!! Wiping/formatting, nothing. I have had problems ranging from non-booting to booting and running but overheating and rapid battery drain.
Also, seems as though this phone has lost the battle against age, in that all the custom dev. seems to be more than a year old, except for the UCMD8 that just came out. I also can't get that one to work. I reverted to ICS 4.0.3 mistakenly believing that the format/wipe step was safe unlike the 4.0.4 version which everyone warns against. Now I see that that is a problem for 4.0.3 as well, so I went with rooting 2.3.4 and tried to install GALAXSIMUNLOCK. It just won't install!!!
What to do now? This is exhausting.!!!
Interestingly, These phones still show LOTS of demand in the market whereas, The BEAUTIFULL pebble blue S3 with a brand new LCD/FRAME I have just sits there, no interest in it at all???
Any opinions would be GREATLY appreciated. Maybe 2.3.4 is too old for GALAXSIMUNLOCK???
Thanks

Apparently GB 2.3.4 is too old. I flashed a stock 4.0.4 ICS. Rooted, unlocked and updated to UCMD8. All is good!!!!
I also can't get UCMD8 rooted(cooked) rom to install for some reason it always turns out STOCK!!! very strange.

Cooked is essentially stock. You won't notice much difference in the way it looks. But there are differences. It has AJK kernel instead of stock kernel, has root and busybox, is deodexed and has been debloated. You can check on any of those things to see if they are there. Boot into recovery, try a root application, use a root file explorer to look into the root files, etc.

Make sure you data factory reset and wipe cache and dalvik in cwm recovery. Reboot in to recovery and flash the cooked rom again. Make sure the rom download was not corrupt.

Just wanted to thank the framaroot developer. I was able to use the first exploit, "Sam" on my wife's AT&T SGH-I777 GSII running 4.0.4. Now, onto a custom ROM!

First time android user (roms and themes)

So I finally made the switch from iphone to an android device. With the Iphone you would jailbreak it. Im guessing here, you would root it and then install a rom?
What do I do if I want to install a rom and then a theme?

First of all u need to root ur device, after this u need to install/flash a kernel with the cwm recovery (u can use easily one of the rooter kernel.made by chainfire), then u can flash the rom, kernel, theme, whatever u want/need directly thru the cwm.

My advice would be to read the threads on the many kernels avaliable all have instructions on how to install... Then when you feel confident make your choice and get yourself rooted. After you understand the process and familiar with CWM and what it is used for use the same process to choose a ROM... Good Luck
In all honesty, I tried loads of roms on my s1 but I have not felt the need for it, or indeed seen any benefit to a custom rom yet, and certainly not one that will out weigh the inevitable bugs in them.
Clockwork rom bootloader is excellent for full back up and restore purposes. Frankly however with this device rooting is enough especially now there are one click solutions for it.
Once rooted there isn't much you can't change or customise. Camera apps, hacked launchers etc
Personally I have found this far more stable and much more interesting than simply installing someone else's work.
OH YES WHILST I REMEMBER FIRST THING TO DO ONCE ROOTED IS BACK UP YOUR /efs FOLDER IMMEDIATELY THIS IS ESSENTIAL!!

Ok so ive been reading the threads and rom section.
I only have 2 question left. My phone atm is on android 2.3.3. In the root thread, I want to get 2.3.5 KI3.
Can I flash the KI3 right away or do I have to update my phone to 2.3.5 and then get the 2.3.5 KI3?
Is Firmware and Modem the samething? I see there both I9100XXKX#
Once I do that, I will root my phone, install cognition rom and then the ICS theme.

I wanna suggest to u the XXKI4 (2.3.5), this is a superb firmware, u can flash directly to this version without any trouble, for the other question, no firmware and baseband/modem are two different things, u can try many basebands cause there are some basebands that works better with ur specific carrier.
So, u should root/install cwm and than cognition and theme.

Help rooting?!
I need serious help to root my phone and to get a ROM on it. I don't really care about it I just have an error in my phone that is caused by water getting into my USB port (i think) any ways I have flashed phones before but only the first Xperia that came out. I have read the guides, over and over. still might as well be reading chinese. I need to take off that damn voice talk crap. anyone close to the washington dc area willin to help? I can pay you and if need be I can just send my phone away to someone maybe? I currently do not have a back up phone this is why this is such a problem for me send me a message here or email me at [email protected]
Be more specific what exactly is the error you are getting? And how did it start.

[Q] New to this phone

I just bought a used galaxy s2 I love the phone already. I had the samsung infuse before, and I loved the cm7 nightly builds on that phone, but had to upgrade You all know how that is haha.... I used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1505172 to root and then had to unlock seeing as I am on rogers.... First thing I have to say is that every time I boot up I see the triangle with the ! in it so I might have done the wrong one? It said before i had the i9000m btw. And I installed CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG2-v4.1-CWM4 as the kernel
Another thing I might as is that when I tried to open odin 1.85, it would say Odin.ini with a bunch of sqaures, i press ok and it closes.... So i just used 1.83.
Last thing is who do I go into cwm recovery, and I want to go on a cyanogen mod 7 or 9.... Should I try cm9? And how would I do that?
THANKS!
Hope everyone here is more helpful than on the infuse sometimes
the yellow triangle is always there when you boot it cause you rooted it.. but gladly, you can remove it with a usb jig (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udzMQ_dsci4) or without usb jig (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOXNf_kH-iA)
I highly suggest skipping CM9 and giving Resurrection Remix a try. Also learn to live with the yellow triangle and forget the CF kernels. I use Siyah kernel and there are other alternatives just as good.
I've tried almost every rom and kernal for S2 and I truly believe RR and Siyah is the best performing combo of them all.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
Thanks I will trythat now, but how do I do that? I sent you a message
If you don't have a usb jig to reset the flash counter and remove the triangle on boot up try chainfire's TriangleAway app either found on the play store(paid) or in his thread here on xda(free). Make sure you are running an ICS rom.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Sorry I meant how do I do the siyah and rr thing but thanks
I received your message. All the info you will need is right here on XDA already. When you rooted your phone you probably installed CWM recovery (press home, volume up and power buttons to boot into it). Assuming you have that you can just follow the steps in the RR thread to install. It already comes with Siyah Kernel so you can simply flash the latest version to keep it updated. I used odin to flash a modem firmware for Canadian networks but that's optional since the stock base band in rr worked fine.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
So that means all I do is flash rr from cwm and clear that bs stuff and I'm good to go?
Sent from my GT-I9100M using xda premium
Its simple as that Just follow the extended steps in the faq of the rr thread and remember to make backups in cwm in case you make mistakes and need to try again.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
if u need to do a factory reset/full wipe in the process of intalling the new rom
all apps and data will be deleted
so its convenient to make backup important things like your apps, sms, or call log
not compusory though
backup apps using Titanium backup, there are free and paid version

Stick with GB. CM9 AOSP AOKP and Samsung ICS roms will give you a headache, poor performance and poor battery life. My two cents.

Rooting new GS2, do it now or wait to update?

I have an ATT I777 on the UCKK6 base. Id like to root it. Its obviously still running GB and that base I listed. I know they sometime lock stuff down further with different update. So the question is, would there be any issue with updating the phone to ICS through KIES and then rooting? Or should I root it before? If I root it before will I lose root if I try to update it then, I would think so at a minimum.
does anyone know the most current base, or what it would be that I came out with after the KIES update?

Ok, so then go through the process to root UCKK6 and then just flash that? Id assume the other available ROMs have the kernel checked for the EMMC bug?
Im new to this phone ans Samsung in general, is this phone basically unbrickable? I see unbricking flashes and things like that

No. This phone is definitely *not* unbrickable if, by unbrickable you mean not capable of being bricked. If you mean can it be brought back from a brick, then it depends on the type of brick we're talking. If you're talking the hard brick caused by the eMMC bug, then no. You won't be bringing it back from the dead.
If you have not already, I would advise reading the post at the following link, then reading the thread related to the mentioned app:

No need really, I'm so used to running ASOP like ROMS on my other phones I probably wouldn't like it anyway. I was mostly just curious as it seems that with the base I'm currently on rooting is a little more involved. I was also wondering if Sammy had maybe patched something in the new build.

Here is what I would do if I were you. When I rooted mine I was on KH7 so I used DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit then installed Mobile Odin to flash Entropy512's DD 3-7 GB kernel to get CWM then flashed a custom ICS ROM. I went back to look over creepys guide "How to Flash Custom Binaries Without Ever Incrementing the Flash Counter" I have read it 100 times I just want to make I got you the best info I could.... Give a BIG shout out to creepyncrawly for putting that guide out!!! Make sure you read that guide lots of great info... I did see a KK6 stock rooted package on here 1a. just read up see what is best then just follow the steps..... If you have any more questions just post them in this thread.
1. If you flash the 2c. "Odin3 One-Click Downloader Stock I-777 UCKH7 with Root no BL" link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311081
1a. Kernel + cache + rooted UCKK6 system package
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432
2. Then install Mobile Odin link (You will need this to flash Entropy512 GB kernel just extract the zImage from the zip file and load it in the kernel slot in Mobile Odin)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899
3. Then flash Entropy512 GB kernel to get CWM link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1289460
4. Then you can flash any custom ROM you want!! AOKP is a great choice Task650 is VERY solid.... GL link

Tool kit or CF-Root?

I've got the day off and nothings really going on so I'm looking to root my SGS III. Still in the preparation phase but I'm basically looking to find the quickest, easiest way to obtain root.
What I've come across is the tool kit and CF-Root methods of doing this. Basically what's the difference between these? I'm also reading about flash counter? And triangle away gets rid of it? I'm not too sure on that really..
Ideally I think I'd prefer using Odin but I cant seem to extract the CF-Root file to get the .Tar PDA file. This is why I've stopped and decided to post before proceeding to **** it all up, as I once did with my SGS...
Any help would be appreciated thanks all
..... Should also say I'm running stock with the latest OTA update if that's any worth

Can't really comment on "best"
But I've had good experience with AHD, WanamLite (2.0) and Omega. All with stock kernels. But Siyaah 1.4 is a good kernel to start with if you want a custom kernel.
Currently my daily driver is Faryaab's AOSP JB Build 3. Loving it!
Sorry, poorly phrased.. should have said, what rom do you use and why?
I confess at the moment I have gone back to a stock de-odexed Rom just to see what Samsung is like after 2 years of being on aosp/cm9 roms, just running siyah kernel over it and removed a bit of bloat.....quite enjoying it

I enjoyed my journey through cm9/10 and aosp JB but I have to say I'm liking the latest Sammy FW, its a lot smoother than it was when I left it to flash CM9 back around when I got the phone.

Help going from ICS to Gingerbread

Bought a used i777 with Shostock2 on it. I like Shostock2 but think I want to go back to Gingerbread, which is what I had on my old phone. I'm assuming I will have to odin back to stock but would love to avoid it if I can.
If anyone can tell me how to go from ICS to Gingerbread or point me to a tutorial I'd very much appreciate it.
Thanks!
PS: Yes I did a search. Found threads on this--but not for the i777.

GB roms or odin. Quite obvious.
There are some gingerbread roms available in the development section. For straight stock you'd have to use Odin or mobile Odin

But why would you want to go back to GB? Otherwise just flash a GB rom, you have a rooted kernal if your on shostock. My advice is dl the latest show stock...so smooth so great!

So you are saying I can just flash a zipped GB rom right over ICS? That's awesome.
I didn't know it was obvious because with my Galaxy S, I remember reading that flashing some roms over others could potentially brick your phone and that you had to go about it in a certain way. I'm happy to know that isn't the case here.

I definitely want a rom, not stock. I'll check out the development section. Thanks!

I love Shostock2 and I think I have the latest version. Very smooth, you are absolutely right. But I play a lot of games on my phone and some of them don't work at all with ICS. I'm hoping I can find something like Shostock2 in a gingerbread form. Thanks for weighing in!

You will be fine in every case. It is necessary to perform a wipe data/factory reset in recovery before flashing a new base.
