THIS IS ONE QUICK/SIMPLE ERROR FREE ROM FLASHING PROCEDURE
This should eliminate a few posts saying, stuck in download mode, stuck at logo. just vibrates and them MANY other issues that somehow, everyone seems to find.
Here is my quick rom flashing process I use ALWAYS (yes always)
THINGS YOU NEED ON extSDCARD
1. Extra kernels (2 or 3 you know works for your device)
2. Optional: 2 recoveries that can be flashed (I use CWM & TWRP)
3. Optional: apps.zip (a zip created from Titantium BU, containing Root Explorer, TU Backup, Quickpic, ES File Explorer and Terminal Emulator)
Flashing the rom: TOUCHWIZ/AOSP ROMS
1. Backup current rom (to the extsdcard)
2. Complete wipe, (I do complete, some people do not) Complete = No Issues [FACTORY RESET + CLEAR CACHE + CLEAR DALVIK CACHE + CLEAR DATA]
3. Flash the rom
4. Flash the kernel (your device kernel) (I know some roms have their own kernel) this is where your problems start.
AGAIN: FLASH YOUR KERNEL, you KNOW it works. 1 more time FLASH YOUR KERNEL. (you can experiment with other kernels after you boot)
AOSP ROMS - require you to flash gapps before you boot. [This is not required for TouchWiz roms]
5. Boot the rom.
FINISHED!!!! SUCCESS!!!
Total time to flash a rom:
7-10min
Errors - NONE
This goes for every rom in my guide.
TIPS:
This flash procedure is for Touchwiz Roms, if you are flashing AOSP roms, you must flash the gapps package associated with the rom you are flashing.
**** SGH-I337M Users: Often requires flashing a different kernel than the one included in most ATT ROMS. Any GT-i9505 kernel will work and Adam kernel and Faux kernel are both confirmed working for us Canadian users.
Note: Flash KERNEL directly after ROM then reboot device.

The extra recovery I flash if a rom does not like the recovery I am using.
Yes, you can flash recoveries back and forth.
Apps.zip I flash after the rom is up & running. This I use to get the rom setup (like root explorer and others needed)

I've been running into a lot of issues when trying to flash different ROMs. For instance, right now I'm on CleanROM 1.6 - I just tried to install PureGv2.
Steps I took:
Have Goo and ROM Manager installed after clean install of CleanROM 1.6
Flash CWM from ROM Manager
Install Recovery Script from Goo
Reboot into recover from Goo
TWRP loads
Wipe data, cache, dalvik, etc
Install PureGv2
I forget the error off the top of my head but it doesn't install
In a nutshell I'm asking what am I doing wrong? Do I need to flash another kernel?
Flash your verizon kernel. Correct. I know it is a vzn rom, but do it anyway.

Was looking through Tomsgt's Youtube channel and stumbled across a video of his that showed his "About Phone". Everything was identical to mine, so I'm still a little lost as to why I can flash certain ROMs but not others. Sac/Gru's ROM soft bricked my phone, Hyperdrive5.7 didn't install, CleanROM does. It's just funky...maybe I'll just Odin back to stock, flash the MDK and start fresh.
Could the downloads be a problem? I downloaded 2 of the ROMs from work today on a 50meg pipe and they didn't work.
Do you download the ROMs to your phone or to your computer and then move them to your SD card?
If you download to your phone, do you move them to the SD card or leave them in the download folder on the internal storage?
If you do the latter, do you use a micro SD adapter or plug the phone in and move them that way?

Download to the computer,then copy to the phones extsdcard, should be ok, make sure you do a md5 check on the files to make sure they are the correct size.

Now I'm running Cleanrom 1.5. If I wanted to install a new rom can someone please explain exactly what I do to go about it? As jargon free as possible would be awesome.

I certainly scared the carp outta me the other night. I'm using the Carbon ROM and while I do like it, I miss a couple of the S4s features. I picked what looked like a good modified stock ROM and proceeded to flash it.
I'm using Goo and TWRP for the job. I checked of all 3 boxes for clearing cache, davik and factory reset.
Then I chose the file and started it.
The first result, it acted like if was doing everything but nothing changed. Phone still worked fine.
On the next try, I waited for TWERP to start and I reselected the ROM I wanted and flashed it.
When it booted up, I was very happy to see the original screens come up. Then it stopped on the one with the Verizon check mark. The blue LED slowly pulsing and nothing else for about 30 min. I removed battery to try and start over. Same thing again.
Time to goto my backup and restore my phone back to Carbon.
IT FAILED.
Now my phone is stuck in a weird looking boot up loop. After a few tries I was able to get into recovery
mode. TWRP started loading, froze and crashed! Even though I am a total noob at this, I still did not panic.
I'd restart my phone by removing the battery, going into recovery mode and then wildly press every button on my phone hoping to break the loop. It worked! I chose a different save and tried it all over again. FAIL.
ON the next I wiped every bit of old data off. Chose Factory restore crossed my fiingers....it work! My phone is fine now.
Thanks to that ordeal and this thread I think I know what I did wrong even though this never happened to me. before.

So, if you just need to add something, like different Kernerl, do you have to wipe and start from scratch?
Should you.
If so, and you backup apps and data in Titanium, then what you do a full wipe, flash entire rom, and reinstall the apps and data associated therewith?
Last, I have asked this but cannot seem to get an answer.
Installed Hyperdrive 7 (also had 5.7 and 6). Rom is super smooth and fast, working like a charm. but I want Verizon Visual Voice Mail.
I tried to copy the apk file to the devices system/app directory but get permission denied message....tried to install, and get failed message....

did you set the permissions for the app? That should work actually. Look at one of the apps in that directory, and set the permissions the same for the voice app. Reboot and see what happens.

Please bring the question over to my thread up above. It shows also what kernels to use. We will help there.
Another noob question: so you still advise flashing a kernel even if the ROM creator says that the ROM comes with the appropriate kernel and that no extra flashing is required? I've got the Verizon Galaxy S4 variant and specifically am thinking of Dubbsy's Google Play Edition ROM.

You would flash the rom, and after, flash your verizon kernel, simple as that.

For the record, I searched several times, but did not find an answer that seemed to fit this question. Also, I hope this isn't a ridiculous noob question.
A little background. I have/had a D1 which I rooted and changed ROMs on many times. It was easy. I either used a new .zip file or ROM Manager. I now have a Fascinate that I tried to root with SuperOneClickRoot, but it didn't seem to work as none of the 'root-only' apps would work. I then tried using Odin, but still had the same problem. I successfully used Odin to return to stock, but of course that was annoying and painful. Frustration got the best of me, and I tried again with Odin and was successful. I ran Odin, got to recovery, installed and ran a SuperClean ROM using the .zip file for many days.
Here's where the trouble begins. I decided to try a different ROM, so I rebooted into recovery, backed up my current ROM (or so I thought), and tried to load another .zip ROM. The first one would not load correctly, so I tried another, and then one more. I wiped the data and the cache before each try. None of them worked, so I thought, OK forget this, I'll go back to my backup and stick with it. NO BACKUP (for this phone) was listed under Backup or Advanced Backup. So, now I'm really stuck, because the only ROM I can get to work at all is Kaoscinate (sp?), but it will NOT work with 'root only' apps, like Titanium Backup'. I read a good bit on xda and tried to change with Odin, but I still had no real luck. I was able to get a SuperDark ROM to work, but it is on Android 2.1 and the 'root only' apps still do not work on it. I'm afraid to try another ROM change because of the issues I've had before. I want to go back to the SuperClean ROM. My phone is very important as it's my business line, so monkeying around with this trial and error is taking too long and making me very uncomfortable.
I can easily get to recovery, wipe data &/or cache, and install a new .zip, but will it boot or work for me? I believe the answer is no, so what am I doing wrong?
Will I have to go through Odin to restore to stock and then REDO the Odin root and go to a ROM that way? That is time-consuming and my confidence is low in that method working to get the ROM I want.
Is there some kind of fix for the 'root only' programs to be able to see that I AM rooted? I tried updating Busybox using Titanium, but that didn't do the trick. Plus, this time, I can't even get Titanium to open, because it says I'm not rooted.

If it's that important, and you'd like to avoid any trial and error, simply odin your preference of ED01 roms here:

To test root, simply open terminal emulator (free in market) and type "su" (no parentheses). It will notify you of a superuser request.
find an odin package for the baseband you want like EB01, EC01, ED01, etc (I use an all in one complete deodexed and debloated EB01 package myself) and the newest CWM 3. Odin them both, boot straight into cwm, wipe data/cache/dalvik, install the .zip rom of your choice from sd card and reboot phone. Should work fine, its the way I've done it and I've had few if any problems
edit: most roms like SuperClean, Evil, ComRom, etc are already rooted so there's no need to do anything special to gain root. the hardest part is flashing it correctly

Do not use ROM manager at all for anything on the fascinate.
The correct way to flash on fascinate: Download ROM .zip file and place on the root directory or your sd card. Boot into CWM and wipe data/cache/ dalvik cache (dalvik is under advanced) choose install zip from sd card. Install and reboot. First reboot will take 5-10 minutes, so be patient.

Just got my S2 last week. Planning to move to CM7 this weekend. I have rooted the device and am on the Codeworkx kernel. I had a few questions:
1. Is there a problem while flashing via Odin if Debugging is not enabled (I think it is more of a OS feature which we haven't entered when in download mode, so shouldn't matter according to me.) ? I tried to disable debugging, and then went to download mode and Odin did detect the phone, but I did not try to flash anything so if anyone has tried that, your input is more than welcome.
2. The reason for above question is: What if I completely brick my phone (with debugging disabled) and no ROM .zip in the sd storage, how do I get the phone up and running ? I understand that I can flash kernels via Odin, but is it true for ROMs as well ?
3. What's the issue with ROM manager ? Is it recommended to stay away from it for S2 ? I have tried to do a Nandroid backup and it always takes me to the Android robot with a exclamation mark screen. Then I have to reboot and the backup magically restarts and completes successfully. Most people have suggested to use CWM recovery directly, so not sure if I should get rid of the ROM manager altogether.
That should be all for now. I have a jig ready by the way, so am not that worried about the process and plan to do a fair bit of reading before proceeding, however, the answers to above queries would be really great !

I can answer some of your doubts.
I don't know if you can flash via odin in case you don't have the usb debuggin enabled so I'm not going to say anything about it.
Anyway if something happens to your phone and you dont have any ROM on your sd card but you have CWM recovery installed (which is almost everytime the case) then in CWM there is a mount usb stoage option. With it you can easily transfer .zip ROM files to flash, or even a nandroid backup you saved in your PC.
ABout ROM manager, this is what I suggest you. The first time you flash CM7 don't use ROM Manager (I even tried using it with the codeworkx kernel with no luck). Now, once you are in CM7 it works perfectly and it's really helpful to flash nightlies withouth wiping data (I flash half the nightlies as they are realeased). So the first time you flash CM7 wipe everything (do a nandroid backup first), even wipe /system, /data, cache partition, dalvik cache, so you don't have any problems. THen install zip from sd card and when it finish install the zip file again (just two installs in a row no wiping in beween, trust me, the first time I tried I didn't do that and couldn't boot the phone).

EDIT: You can flash stock ROM via odin, there is a thread by infratech were this is explained and you have a list of downloable stock ROMS you can flash with Odin, these are region and carrier specific and you probably will get the one for your carrier. I found the stock ROM for my carrier and I'm from chile, you shouldn't have any problems with that. Well, good luck, CM7 is by far the best ROM I've flashed.
Oh another thing, go for the latest nightly since the battery life is incredibly improved over the RC (or was it stable?) version.

Awesome ! This is exactly what I was looking for. I haven't dived into all the options of the CWM, so didn't know that this feature existed.
Also, many thanks for explaining most of the things in a single concise post, it was very helpful. I'll have to check the ROM flash with Odin, so I will search for that thread and have a go through it later today.
Once I get a hang of CM7, I'll go in for the nightlies as well. And yes, I did read about the CM7 guys revert the status to an RC because of the bugs reported, so will give it a try once I definitely know what I'm getting into .

Okay. Couple days ago, i got my new Samsung Galaxy S II. Fell in love with it. I previously had a Vibrant, but that met an unfortunate and violent demise. On the vibrant I hadn't been doing anything involving roms and such because i'd tried once, and completely fried the phone. LOL.
I managed to root my phone, and from what I've read, I didn't do the best method. What I did was get an unsecure kernel, and flashed that, then used a 1-click root type thing to root it. So one of my questions is, my clockwork mod isn't working, what's wrong with it? I downloaded ROM Manager, and flashed CWM. But when i reboot into recovery, i get the stock Samsung recovery screen. How can I get this to work?
And another question, is about roms such as Cyanogen mod. I really wanna get it. (I wont until I get CWM working, though.) And I'm just wondering. If I were to just go to ROM Manager, and flash cyanogen, would it work, or do i need to do more to my phone to be able to put on custom roms? I've never understood the concept of roms vs kernels vs firmware vs whatever else.
And if it matters, Samsung Galaxy S II, Android 2.3.3, rooted using SuperOneClick.
P.S Anything else that I should considering doing/putting onto my phone? And thanks in advance for halping.

Okay, don't take this the wrong way, but it seems you're a bit lacking regarding knowledge about this phone... It'd pay to do your research beforehand in the SGS2 forum, read the FAQs, etc.
Okay, first off, all I can say is, go back to stock. Go flash a stock Samsung ROM for the device. Then, go into Chainfire's CF-Root Kernel thread, and download the appropriate kernel, and flash it using ODIN. After you've done that, you'll have ClockworkMod, and you'll be rooted. It is recommended that you flash another kernel though, after gaining root, as all the CF-Root kernel does it install ClockworkMod, and root the device. Personally, I recommend SiyahKernel.

Alright, I did what you said. I went to stock 2.3.4, used CF-root. And now about SiyahKernel, what are the advantages of it? And is there something wrong with just staying with the CF-Root kernel?
And as of where I am now, with just root and CWM, would i be able to switch ROMs and such?

With a rooted device you'll be able to flash trough Odin or CMW recovery any rom you like.
Siyah kernel gives you a faster and more battery efficient phone and lets you set your own Voltage/ speed the processor has to use see this for the latest info

SiyahKernel has a lot of advantages and improvements of CF-Root, which provides null, if I'm correct. Go check out the SiyahKernel thread in Original Development for details.
Yes, as stated, you can use CWM by itself to switch ROMs. Just remember that if you're switching ROMs (as opposed to performing a flash to a newer version of the same ROM), to perform a factor reset / wipe data, wipe cache, and wipe Dalvik cache (Advanced > wipe Dalvik cache) in ClockworkMod first.

For a beginninger, I can't recommend MIUI highly enough. You could go with GalnetMIUI, which is a variant, but I personally prefer the official MIUI build. If you're looking for a more, 'pure' experience, go with CyanogenMod 7.1 stable.

So going from my phone to for example Cyanogen, I'd backup in CWM, and Titanium backup (Or does CWM backup like, EVERYTHING?) and then factory reset, flash the rom using odin, and then use titanium backup to get my apps and settings back? orwhat.

CWM backup (called a NANDroid backup), backs up everything. If you perform a NANDroid back, there's no need to perform a backup in Titanium Backup - it creates a full image of your system (the advantage to TB though, is that you can backup all your download apps and settings, then install the new ROM, and restore the backed up apps - If you restore a NANDdroid backup, it'll restore the old ROM, exactly as it was when the backup was made).
So yes, the installation process is, for CWM: copy the ROM.zip to your phone, then boot into CWM recovery. Hit the 'factory reset / wipe data' option, the 'wipe cache' option, and then go to Advanced, and hit the 'wipe Dalvik cache' option. After that, choose 'install ZIP from SDCARD', and choose your ROM.zip. After it finishes installing, just hit 'reboot system now', and you're good to go!

Alright, i got that done. I've tried both MIUI and Cyanogen, and both are working and lookin wonderful. But the problem is I dont get data on either one. I've tried reflashing, rebooting, factory reset. Idunno what else to try. Do you know what could be causing this?

Check your APN settings (should be somewhere in Settings under mobile network or whatever). Look your's up online ('APN settings carrier y, country z), and if they're not correct, add them in.

With CyanogenMod, there's a bit of a story to it, but basically, they're not allowed to package Market, Gmail, Maps, etc. with the ROM, so you need to download a zip file called Gapps and flash it in CWM Recovery, you can find it here. You don't need to wipe anything when flashing this.
Also, build #115 isn't the latest, build #117 is (in fact, there's another, even more current one, but there's really nothing to it), but I don't believe there's any major changes.

Hey, I was having troubles messaging you, since it didn't show anything in the sent box, i assumed it didnt go through. So i guess ill be still asking you on here.
So about Cyanogen, which build is the best? And if i'm going from one build to another, like from 115, to 116, would i still have to do a complete wipe? And any other roms besides MIUI and Cyanogen you recommend? cause MIUI is giving me and couldn't generate md5 errors, and i cant restore to it, and i hate starting off without it set up how i like it. D: and yeah, thanks.

Usually, your best bet is to go with the latest build, which you can get here. If it's stability you're looking for, go with the stable build, instead of nightlies.
Personally, out of all ROMs I've tried, I could only ever stand MIUI and CyanogenMod - but even then, MIUI started to annoy me with little things here and there. I think I'll be sticking with CyanogenMod for awhile. So, I'm not really the best authority on that. Just try some different ones, and see what appeals to you the most

I am able to install CleanROM and Sophisticated. But when I attempt to install CM11, MeanBean, or Gummy the install fails. It attempts to unzip but always ends with failed. This occurs on both recoveries. I have even tried an alternative recovery. Nothing seems to get it done. Please someone help. Like to note I checked my external SD card for errors. It passed.

General consensus seems to be that philz recovery is currently the recovery of choice for 4.3, id say give that a try

This same thing happened to me. I couldn't even install backups I had. I finally gave up, ODIN'd back to stock and reran casual, everything has been fine since. Even re-installing the same exact recovery.

Im going to give that a shot. I think it may actually be the thing that sorts this all out. Not hat Phillz is not a good option. But that's the other recovery I already tried. Thinking that maybe the Casual I did was not smooth. As it did hang a couple times and was not as smooth as I would have liked. I am going to reply back when I do it to let everyone know how it turned out. Just in case someone else has the same issues.

Hmmmm. Somewhere there's a step that's failing you (obviously). Maybe break down your process, from download to flash, and try to pinpoint where it's going wrong. In my experience the things that have caused an install to fail have been either an incompatible or outdated recovery, bad download (check the MD5), or borked system partition (which is when I Odin'd and re-casualed).
Had issues with CM11 until I ODIN'd back to stock LJB, unlocked bootloader/rooted, updated to latest TWRP 2.6.3.1 via ODIN, wiped all partitions included cache, data, dalvik, system, internal sdcard, external sdcard then adb push CM11 plus gapps and installed. Just make sure you can adb push before wiping everything along with checking file CRC and temporarily disable antivirus.
So I the issue ended up being one of an interesting nature but not normal. When I download thw rom of choice to my phone I move it to my SD card. Making sure its out of the distruction path. As is normal practice. I am using Rom Toolbox root browser to make the move. Turns out that although it gave the impression it was moving the files, it did not always do so. So each time I copy a file from place to another I have to check that it was done in full and without flaws. Quite an interesting problem. As a move of that sort should not break files.

It's always something small it seems. Good practice is to download the ROM, get it to it's final destination then check the MD5. I always wait until I've moved it to the SD to check the MD5 just in case there was a bad transfer.

I've upgraded my 925F to Official MM 6.0.1. Rooted it through kernel Xspace and then installed recovery TWRP_3.0_MM_S6_by_ManhIT
My only concern is when I'm in TWRP I can't reboot, it just freezes.
I can nandroid backup no problem just the reboot part freezes TWRP.
Anyone else had this problem? is there another TWRP to be used?
nb : I tried clearing cache + dalvik, freezes still happen before rebooting.

Try this TWRP form arter... this is the only TWRP being use by many of us here.. you flash it through odin or recovery...

The issue is not the kernel... its the recovery that doesn't work when reboot to system is touch and is freezing..
Go to advance then terminal
Write reboot

Yes i know the iusse is about the recovery but it seems because there is not compatibility between some recovery and some kernel. I tried various recovery 3.0 and i have always a kind of freeze. The TWRP... by Manhit for example gave me freeze with xspace kernel but not with hacker kernel. I don't no the reason....

I'm experiencing a freeze in TWRP after about a few seconds, the whole recovery stands still and this happens every time.
I flashed the Xspace kernel which hasn't help.
The TWRP from arter97 works great, except it doesn't allow me to copy files to my PC using MTP, message says unexpected error.
yet, the ManhIT and Original TWRP allow me to copy data but both of them freeze up after a few seconds which causing the copying to fail.
Reasons I'm doing this is because my SM-G925F start looping and I've tried flashing stock so many times to no avail.
I'm sure all i need to do is data/ factory wipe and my phone will boot fine, I just really need some data before I do that.
Is there perhaps a different kernel I can try?
or if anyone has any suggestions that would be very much appreciated.

Above mentioned problems persist.
Since arter97 TWRP is not freezing on me, if I run a back up on the Data only. Then perform the wipe, the backup should still be there, correct?
and lets say I flash the stock ROM again if necessary and I'm able to boot the device.
Would it be possible to restore that data back up at all ?
or perhaps copy that back up to my PC and access/extract the files with a separate application?

I think best thing to do is get an otg storage adapter that plugs direct to phone. They are cheap.
Then run the backup of data and store on otg storage. Then you have it safe and it can be restored at a later time with restore option in twrp.
Or you can always do a full nandroid backup.
Can you get onto the phone now? Does it boot up?
Is there anything specific you need off the phone? To be backed up?

I plan on getting one of those, they seem extremely useful. A colleague has one which I plan to use tomorrow if they remember to bring it, I will then do as you suggest.
Never done a full nandroid back up before but will do some searching on that.
Phone still hangs at the Samsung splash screen.
And its really only pictures and some videos that I want, contacts would be nice too.
PS, this happened when I plugged my device into the PC to charge it was at about 5%, and I was making use of side sync to control the device when it just shutdown. I thought maybe the battery died so left it to charge a bit, it eventually tried to boot up by itself and its been looping ever since. Was really strange cause it gave me no issues prior to this. When I tried to get to the recovery it would hang at the "installing updates" section once I flashed the stock ROM I was able to get to recovery to wipe the cache but no luck.

They are really useful, one of the best things ive ever bought regarding my phone. I use it daily now.
As for nandroid backup, it basically backs up absolutely everything including the firmware and data and all partitions. I always do it before flashing or modifying anything. Then if anything goes wrong, you just flash back your nandroid backup.
Can i ask before this happened did you use google photos? If so and sync was on they will all be saved. If you dont use it i reccomend you to use it from now on incase this ever happens in future.
See how you go making the backup when you can then if you need help regarding flashing the stock and getting the phone working ill help

I never made use of google photos, not the biggest fan of cloud storage to be completely honest but I do see its benefits when it comes to times like these. lol
as for the device, last night I flashed a custom recovery (arter97) and made use of the SkipSoft Android ToolKit to pull my photos, videos and documents through the adb protocol. That being said, I have the data I wanted so all is well there.
However, after wiping the cache and doing a data / factory reset. I reflashed the stock ROM, it all goes swell until the android pops up with a message displaying " installing system updates". It gets to 32% changes to erasing then restarts , and this happens constantly no matter how many times I flash it or restart the device.
I read on another forum that my devices is probably dead and it could be the mother board. Any thoughts?
You think maybe a custom ROM would bring it up?

As for the little android guy and the installing updates then erasing, this normally happens. It happens every single time i restore and normally boots fine just after its not normally an issue. After yours says erasing does it then just reboot and restart the process of erasing constantly?
What i would suggest first is to flash a different stock ROM, preferably one with newest bootloader.
After flashing, boot to recovery and wipe dalvik cache. If it gets as far as the samsung logo just leave it as the first boot can take a while... like 30 minutes.
If that doesnt work try to flash a custom ROM. I reccomend CarHD ROM. I uave used it for quite some time and no issues.
It deffinately does not sound like motherboard issue. Normally you would have many issues and errors on boot prior to having main board issues.
See how you get on and keep me updated.

It doesn't say erasing after the first time. Right after the flash it will reboot to the blue screen with the android, it displays Installing update with a percentage bar which gets to 32% then that disappears and shows erasing, then again it shows installing update with no percentage bar. The android guy has a two arrows on his chest spinning which eventually stops. The device then reboots. It goes back to the Android guy but this time it shows "installing system update" without the percentage bar, it will then freeze again then reboot. That will continue forever until the battery dies.
After flashing though I can't seem to get to recovery to wipe the cache, I hit the buttons as I always do, but the blue screen and android always appears.

Do you perhaps have a link to that custom ROM? would it work fine with the service provider here in SA (Vodacom) ?

Right after the flash it will reboot to the blue screen with the android, it displays Installing update with a percentage bar which gets to 32% then that disappears and shows erasing, then again it shows installing update with no percentage bar. The android guy has a two arrows on his chest spinning which eventually stops. The device then reboots. It goes back to the Android guy but this time it shows "installing system update" without the percentage bar, it will then freeze again then reboot. That will continue forever until the battery dies.
After flashing though I can't seem to get to recovery to wipe the cache, I hit the buttons as I always do, but the blue screen and android always appears.

Do you perhaps have a link to that custom ROM? would it work fine with the service provider here in SA (Vodacom) ?
And well at least that is some good news, I'm not too keen on having to take this into a shop and pay for parts.

Thats pretty much exactly what happens to mine after restoring or flashing but mine boots up.
Flash the firmware again but in odin options uncheck auto reboot. This time after flashing, the phone should stay off. Then you can boot to recovery.
If that doesnt work, whilst it is on the blue screen with android guy hold only vol down and power, phone will reboot, as soon as the screen goes off switch to recovery combo and this should force it to recovery.

Man I think I'm just going to try the custom to see if it works.
Would I need to flash a custom kernel or can it be stock?
After flashing the kernel with twrp I'm going to assume I would follow the same step.
1. flash TWRP custom recovery
2. copy .zip file to sdcard
3. go to recovery, install , select the .zip
Is that it or am I missing anything else when it comes to flashing ROMs through the recovery?

Thats it.
Before installing rom go to wipe in TWRP, wipe data, dalvik, cache and system.
You dont need to flash a kernel though.
However when flashing carhd rom aroma installer will go through some choices, from there you can choose to install arter kernel. I reccomend doing this rather than keeping stock kernel.
Remember once installer complete and rom is installed leave it a while if it hangs on samsung logo screen. It can take a while to boot.

Currently waiting on the custom to download, don't have the quickest internet connection.
while I've been waiting, I've tried the stock ROM again.
something I forgot to mention before, which has happened a few times:
During the blue screen with the droid stating installing updates.
it switches to a screen with a big yellow triangle two dots below it and a dead droid.
After this I get to recovery, I wiped the cache and its getting to the samsung logo but freezes and then restarts all over again.
I'm just curious if you know what the yellow triangle thing means?

I think it normally means a failed update. Sometimes there are instructions to use smart switch other times it just means the update failed.
Try with the custom ROM and keep me updated.
