So my MicroSD card (32GB SanDisk Class 10 Red/Grey) has been acting weird lately (since I upgraded from ICS to JB). Not my phone automatically unmounts the card from time to time and I don't know why. I have trying formatting from Windows and from the phone, with FAT32 and ExFat. And I don't want to wipe my phone or install any other ROM or similar stuff.
I will try another card, but is there something I can do to prevent this?
This has nothing to do with your ROM or your phone, it's your SD card itself which is causing this problem. Just try another SD card and I'm sure the problem is solved.

I will try... but is weird because the problem started right after I upgraded my phone.

Sandisk admits to faults with Mobile ultra SD cards
Well yeah, some sandisk class 10 32gb have issues.
But what about the countless other micro sd cards being reported as fried by the s3?
I believe there is also something wrong with some s3 that kills sd cards.
I've had it happen with sandisc 32gb, and kingston 16gb.

Yup, S3 has some issues with SD cards (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1906058&highlight=sd+card+killer). Allready killed one of mine too, couldn't do anything with it. No device even recognized it anymore.
I insist, maybe it's my phone because it happened right after the upgrade, maybe something in the ROM, OS, kernel, or something... so I guess it's a lottery... I'm trying another card now...
Its the phone

Last night just before plugging in my beloved SGS2 I saw that there was an icon of a microsd card with an exclamation mark on it. The phone was complaining that the card was corrupt and unusable.
Card is a Patriot brand Class 10 16GB (Yeah, I went with a cheaper model). The file system was unusable and unreadable when I tried to read the data with a micro-sd to SD adapter on my PC. I was not able to retrieve any info.
I switched to an 8GB Sandisk card from a previous phone, but am concerned now about losing data again.
Has anyone else encountered a corrupt micro-sd card on their SGS2, or a similar problem with a Patriot brand card?
Thanks!
I was facing the same problem too. reformat it and it will work again....
however the micro sd getting corrupted every month.....
now sending it for rma...
Corrupt Micro SD
I have the same problem I formatted it with my sgs2 but now I think mine is worse, my 16gb micro SD card says it has 0 bytes in windows and therefore is to small to be formatted and in osx and ubuntu it says it has 2.2 tb and has errors and cannot be formatted.
It freaking happened again! Different card now, bought a 32GB class 10 on boxing day. Just a fortnight later I've lost all the files from it!

Have you tried just taking the card out of the phone and just connecting it directly to a pc with a card reader? My card use to become corrupted when a file transfer went wrong on my phone, but I just remove it and plug it in directly to my pc and it goes back to normal.
The first time I did, couldn't be read. Keeping backups for now.

Hey all. Over the past week or so, I've been experiencing a problem where randomly, a message will come up in a random task saying something like "SD Card unmounted unexpectedly, it may be damaged." Anybody else experiencing this? It is the stock SD card and I've made 100% sure it wasn't loose or anything. Think this could just be a bad SD card?

I'm running into the same problem. I've been ignoring it in hopes that it's a software issue that will get resolved whenever a JB ROM is released. Are you running a custom rom? I'm running The Base 0.7.3.
Fyi, I haven't had this problem at all in over two months of use. Ran stock for about a month and The Base rom for the past month.
Thank god other people have had it happen too. It's happened to me a lot BUT.. I had a 32gb class 4 SanDisk in my phone and that was constantly unmounting itself but I put the 16gb that came with my phone and it has yet to do it. Are you guys using a card other than what it came with?
Sent from my LG-E970
It happens to mine quite a bit, probably 7-10 times a day. I'm using a SanDisk 64GB class 10 SD card, formatted as ExFAT. Maybe I'll try switching back to the stock card to see if that has anything to do with it.
I had the same problem and switch out the card and the error stopped. I had the 32GB SanDisk Ultra and with that card it I was getting the random dismounts. I replaced it with the stock card and was working fine. I returned the SanDisk card and got a new one and it seems to be fine for about 5 days now.
What file formats are you using. My 64 GB is formatted as Fat32 and I've never had this issue. I also think that the included SD Card was pre-formatted to Fat32 which may be the reason it stopped when you switched back to it.
There you go... I've always used the stock sd card. Are you guys losing data when this happens?
This used to happen to me on my 64GB Sandisk Class 10 formatted with exFAT. I fixed it by running CHKDSK with both options checked in Windows 7. Hasn't happened since. It said it didn't detect any errors but it did something lol.
I don't believe I've lost any data. All of the songs I put on the SD card still play. I may try repairing it or using the SD card from my inspire, which may prove to be worse since I think it's only a class 4. I'll post once I figure something out.
One last thing was I tried doing a non-quick format of the card and after that my phone would not recognize that card at all until i exchanged it for a new one.
I generally don't recommend letting Windows GUI format a flash card. Google around for windows make clean, windows command line clean and format. That's your ticket right there.
There seems to be a prevalent issue in the latest jelly bean update in Galaxy S2 and Galaxy S3. All is smooth but after sometime this error pops up "Sd card unexpectedly removed" and then "Preparing Sd card".
This is related to the micro SD cards and not the internal storage memory.
In lots of forums people keep speaking about hardware issue! But I can assure you that it is not a hardware issue since I am now running CM9 stable for Galaxy S2 i9100 and the card is working fine with no error whatsoever.
There is an app called SD Card Monitor to check whether the SD card is being unmounted.
So there is no problem in ICS ROMs. My father's Galaxy S3 started giving the error once he updated to the official Samsung Jelly bean stock. If I run any jelly bean ROMs based on the Samsung stock I get these notifications in my phone plus the app SD Card Monitor reports a lot of bad unmounts. Around 15 to 16 in a span of 5 minutes.
The card I use is 32gb micro SD class 4 Transcend. People have reported same issues with Sandisk and even Samsung branded micro SDs. I really doubt some unwanted changes Samsung might have put in their code in Jelly Bean which makes these errors pop up.
I am posting this issue so that the developers would know that such an issue exists in the latest Samsung Jelly bean official ROMs and other ROMs based on the Samsung Stock.
Currently I am running ICS 4.0.4 CM9 Stable. I have formatted the card in Windows under Fat32. I have even tried NTFS and exFat. The unmounting issue was always there in the Samsung Jelly Bean but there is no issue in ICS.

In order to confirm, I have tried variety of ROMs.This issue popped up in Chameleon, NeatROM and also CM10.1. Now When I am running NeatRom ICS version there is no issue. I also checked with CM9. There is no issue. This has to be something related to Samsung. There are lots of discussions out there where Galaxy S3 is destroying SD cards. Something has to be done.
Not much hype is created because the worst that can happen is a dead SD card. Well High capacity SD cards are not cheap.
Confirmed issue in Samsung Jelly Bean Sources for Galaxy S2 i9100 and Galaxy S3 i9300. Possibly on other Samsung Jelly bean sources as well.
Issue mostly happens on high capacity cards, maybe 16gb or above.
Most affected brands - Sandisk, Transcend.
No issue when running ICS sources.

I've got a Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100 with Jelly Bean and Sandisk 32GB class 10.

That's not necessarily a fact because my "SD card unexpectedly removed" started when I was still on ICS, and haven't been rectified with the new JB releases.
After reading quite a lot I am inclined to think it's a hardware fault - either the SD card slot and connectors or the SD cards itself.
Everyone here seems to be dead set that it must be a Sandisk problem, but I have this problem with 2 different A-DATA 32GB class 10 cards.
UPDATE:

Also, please add this note and link to the OP to hopefully catch people when they first see this thread, and encourage them to go there and register before getting lost in this rabbit hole (i.e. a real solution might not exist outside of fixing some code somewhere within the OS itself).
The reason for error "SD card Unexpectedly" in my phone was bad sectors on the sd card. When I replaced the sd card in shop with new one the error "SD card Unexpectedly" isn't showing again.
Again back to square one!

Well, I have reason to believe because my observations point me that way.
There is no hardware fault whatsoever as I have been using an 8gb Card without any issues. Now a 16gb Card without any issues.
Maybe your issue might be a hardware fault, that doesn't mean everybody has a hardware fault. When people say so you got to read everything. Even in my post I have specifically mentioned I had no issues in ICS. Please don't mix up everything.
"If your issues started with ICS that means you may have a problematic card or problematic hardware"
In my case I can assure you there is no problem with the card because it works perfectly in other Android devices and my phone does not have a hardware problem because 16gb and 8gb cards work perfectly in it.
I hope I have made myself VERY CLEAR.
Hey all,
I am having the same issue. The card may or may not be read by my laptop either, it's about 50/50. I was able to copy all the data off, thankfully. I know this isn't the S4 forum, but it's the same issue, hope you don't mind. I didn't see an S4 forum with this issue, unless I missed it.
Anyway, I read somewhere that this may be caused because the SD card was connected while rooting the phone. I don't know how true that is, but I gave it a shot. I re-rooted my phone with the card removed. Then, I formatted the card (FAT32, 32KB) in my laptop. I did a full format, not a quick one. I did NOT format the card after I put it back in my phone. Then, I copied all the content back to the card (card in phone).
it's been ok for a few days now. Could this have been helpful? Is it possible having it connected while rooting is causing an issue? I'll update here if it starts acting up again.

I don't think rooting is the cause for that (I will give you an opinion from the s2 perspective) usually in our device either the card is loose, or some rom has some bugs, next time it happens just try carefully cleaning it with a dry cloth and insert it firmly, also do not remove again unless that problem occurs again, frequent SD card changers have had problems like this since they remove their SD card often, which makes it slightly loose.

Just adding to the information already gathered ....
Probably not rooting and may not be device specific. May be related to JB - some posts elsewhere suggest that the problems started happening on S2/3 devices after a JB upgrade from ICS. I have a Galaxy S4, non-rooted, put in a brand new Samsung 64GB SDHC Class 10 and got the problem after a day. Started happening when I was using the Video Camera - not sure if this is significant.
It got so bad that the phone started complaining that the SD card was corrupt. When I put it on a PC - there were no problems with the SD or the files on it.
So I'm going to try formatting the SD card (as exFAT) on my PC and see what happens. I'll let you know how this gets on - not too hopeful that this will fix the problem.
Had same issue with two Transcend 32gb cards. In both cases, after unexpected unmount sd cards were completely dead...
Same problem on Galaxy s2 with CM10.1 and Sandisk 32gb class 10.
No solution yet?
I have the same issue with my 32GB Sandisk card.
This happens on my S2 and S3. After a night of unmount bug my sd card is dead.
I had issues with a 64GB card on my S3 that I thought would end when I got my S4. It didn't.
I'd be scrolling down in Titanium to restore my apps and the card would be "removed unexpectedly".
I just put in a brand new card and haven't had any issues since.
For people who ended up with dead card - did you use ext sd for camera storage, or torrent dowload, etc?
Maybe frequent read/writte on jb at one point corrupts and kills ext sd. Just thinking loudly.
Now I am using 3rd (!) card - storage for photos and everything else is on internal. So far is ok. In previous (and fatal) cases, both of cards died after 3 months of usage.

That doesn't mean it's hardware issue. It means - after software issue of your phone, it became hardware issue for your card.
If you really want to test, buy another card, use it with ICS, and then you will see if it is hardware issue...
I have a Sandisk Ultra class 10 64gb external SD card which has worked well since I purchased the phone (several months ago). Recently however, I've been running into issues where the ROMs I've tried won't recognize it (Beans, Carbon, Liquid). The strange part is that TWRP recognizes it without a problem (I've flashed from it several times). I've tried both nandroid and clean flashes. I've done a a battery pull and booted the phone without the card mounted. When I insert the card, I get the typical "Preparing SD card" message, which doesn't seem to go away.
Anyone have any suggestions on how I could try and fix it (other than hopefully buying a new card)? Thanks.
EDIT: Ignore. Formatted the card and that seems to have fixed it for now.

I have the same card but the 32gb. On Amazon alot of people complained about the card not functioning after 6 months of use. So I opted for the 32gb version which had the same complaint, just not as abundant.

I see you've fixed the issue, just in case you didn't already know though AOSP ROMs can only use the card when its formatted as fat32. TW ROMs can use the card formatted as exfat. Going back and forth between TW and AOSP may have corrupted your card if it wasn't formatted as fat32 when you went to AOSP.

It may just be that the card died, I have several 64 GB class 10 micros and have no issues, from what I hear though the class 10 is the worst and if you can get the original 64GB that wasn't a class 10 these issues aren't there.

I'm guessing something got corrupt somehow, or the card is on its way out. Once I reformatted it, it started to work again.

Sounds like buying a new SD card is a good idea. You can't say it's frying SD cards when you're having problems with a single SD card which you've had for a year+.
