Use Android File Transfer for Mac. Works like a charm.
http://www.android.com/filetransfer/
This hasn't worked for me on any samsung other than the GNEX.
Probably you have some other software installed, that run into conflict with android File Transer. For example - Parallels Desktop, Fusion or any other software that uses USB connection directly. 'Cause I have this program installed on my MacBook Air for two years, and since that I had:
HTC One S
Samsung Note 2
HTC Droid DNA
Samsung Galaxy S4
All devices are worked and still working. Sometimes I have to reconnect the device to determine it properly. In very rare case I have to reboot my computer. But in most cases it works from the start.

It works with the Still works with the DNA, and GNEX.
Still nothing with the S4. Guess It's time to write an sort of dynamic .sh adb based Script.

Another thing I remember - that when USB-Ethernet adapter is connected to my Air and in use - it makes some problems to fastboot. Try to disconnect it before connecting the phone. And just in case: is USB Debug option turned on?
PS: Just checked again AFT if it works. Find attached screenshot.
This is what I keep getting.
Yes Debugging is off.
I'm running CM10
FastBoot Doesn't quite work with Samsung phone.

My Debugging is ON.
CM10 - that should be a start point! Did you try on Stock ROM? If my memory serves me right - there was some thread about MTP support for CM10 ROMs. Try to look around.
Fastboot - yes, I know. It was just explanation.

At this point the only thing that works is a ADB push command. I'm trying to build something more dynamic. Something like AFT that relies on adb vs MTP / PTP because samsung really knows how to make that never work.

Do not overprice it. It just uses regular adb commands. To work with folders, for example, it uses "adb shell su ls -l -a" command, and parse results with regular windows framework. I am not Mac programmer, but I am former programer at all, and can say that biggest job in making such program - is interface.

Just got my Hero back from rep (they chanced the Mainboard) now when i plug it to my computer, it i showend as a HTC Dream. Can that be right??
Could they have put in a HTC Dream mainboard whem they fixed it???
Any way to find out??
Are you sure it didn't show as a Dream beforehand?
On my Vista X64 machine, my Hero uses the Dream ADB driver, but on my Windows 7 laptop I've installed HTC Sync, so I'm showing quite a few more device functions than you - I take it you do not have HTC Sync installed?

I suppose it is possible, the only things i would check to make sure your not short changed are the RAM & ROM, also maybe the camera. Other then that the specs are pretty similar, They even use the same ARM11 processing chip

I can`t get Htc Sync to work on my windows 7 x64
tried to follow the instructions with the x64 driver, bus can`t seem to get it to work.
I´ve installed HTC Sync 2.0.4 and the x64 driver. Put the driver in C:\Program Files (x86)\HTC\HTC Driver\Driver Files\Vista_x64, but it dosen`t seem to work.
My computer do not recognize the Hero.
Am i doing something wrong?

It´s okay.. mabye it issen`t possible to see that on the Hero.
Du you have any clue how to fix the problem with Htc Sync?
Connect your phone to the computer.
Enter command prompt and type adb shell
You'll then be able to enter commands to your phone.
To check processor speed enter:
cat /proc/cpuinfo
to check memory enter:
cat /proc/meminfo

I would try removing your existing hardware device from Device Manager, and completely reinstalling from scratch. Before you attach the phone to your machine, ensure that you have USB debugging switched on.
In addition, some people here have reported similar problems which have been completely cured by switching USB cable, even though the USB cable they used seemed to work fine with other devices.

Hi,
I've been wondering, I remember with my Sony Ericsson P990i that there was a program I could install on my PC that would have a window which mimic'd the phone and allowed me to remotely control the phone. This was great while the phone was docked as I could type out messages and everything with my computer and not have to un-dock the phone. Is there any program or method of achieving a similar solution for the Streak?
Thanks!
http://code.google.com/p/androidscreencast/
..... and nevermind, after trying, its upside down, and the touch controls dont work... stupid streak, lol
Hi jmhalder,
Thanks for the reply.....so androidscreencast doesn't work with the Streak?
Any other options or a way to get this to work?

jmhalder - how have you managed to get this to work at all with your Streak (got it right this time) as I keep on getting:
java.lang.RuntimeException: SyncService is null, ADB crashed ?
at net.srcz.android.screencast.injector.Injector.uploadAgent(Injector.java:67)
at net.srcz.android.screencast.injector.Injector.init(Injector.java:177)
at net.srcz.android.screencast.injector.Injector.access$0(Injector.java:171)
at net.srcz.android.screencast.injector.Injector$1.run(Injector.java:27)
I've installed Java SDK 6 and everything seems to be working and I've installed Android SDK to my C drive and I've ran adb devices and it sees my phone (on my Windows 7 64-bit). However, whenever I run any other command (e.g. adb remount) I get the line "error: closed"
I've tired this with the Dell Suite installed and uninstalled, as well as having the phone unrooted and rooted Any ideas?
No idea, it worked on mine, rooted and on 2.1... but the screen was upside down and it wouldn't let me control it via cursor actions on the PC... I've only had the "error: closed" with a borked install of android on my streak where it wasn't bootable... I'd make sure the "tools" folder is listed in your PATH...:

There's a VNC server in the Market for rooted Android devices. It worked pretty well from mthe limited testing I did.

Yes, that's what a VNC "server" is, and why root is required. Your Streak is the server, being remote controlled by your PC. Sort of like the Soti remote controller from the WinMo days (if you were ever there).
I didn't test/play with it much, not sure how functional it was.
Search for VNC in the market, it should be there.
^^ Cool dude, I might give that a try then!
I've actually managed to get it working now....I had a quick search on how to screen capture and a lil guide said to turn on USB debugging on the phone which I had completely forgot about and after doing so it started workin Now a way to try and get the rest of the app to work i.e. the upside down screen and controls
EDIT:
Ooo managed to get the controls to work YAY this was probably the main thing that I wanted to work, not overly fussed about the screen being upside down as I can just look at the phone while I type. I had to give full read and write permission to the "/data/dalvik-cache" folder (ticking the read and write of others as all other boxes were ticked), and all of a sudden it start to work.

My project group for our senior project is developing an Android app. We are pretty much done at this point, but we have to present our app on Friday. We have done a practice presentation with a demo on the emulator, but we would like to present it on my phone.
I was wondering what is the best/easiest way to put my Android display on a PC so we can do our presentation on my phone the way it was meant to be shown.
So it would be my phone connected to a laptop, laptop connected to projector, and laptop displaying my phone's display on the projector.
This way we can also use our GPS location and use the app to take pictures which are both important parts of our presentation.
Do you have a HDMI out port on your Android device? That would work nicely.

Since you said you are developing apps, i assume you've done so using eclipse, and if not
then download it. install ADT plugin, make a bogus project,
OR if you already are working in eclipse, open your project, deploy on phone using Ctrl+F11 when your phone is in Debugging mode with ADB daemon running, open DDMS window in eclipse, on the top bar click on "Device" and then on capture screen.
oops, sorry thought you just needed pics for presentation. Remote ADB is your only way then

Afaik the idisplay was meant to migrate your pc's entire screen onto your Android phones display?wasnt?
as an alternative monitor i say
i remember my LG p970 having a PC app called ' LG on screen phone '(LG OSP) that since i was(am) #### about Smartphones networking solutions, i tried installing it on my low-end toshiba laptop, and it was damn OK and working like a charm likely with 30Fps or more.
then after i ve tried many cross-platform apps like mobo made one for my Htc and sony devices, and neither of them could saticfy me with their stupid qiualities and low frame rate.
i yet have that application. But the question is whether can a dev handle some modification on it to be use on any kinda android devices?
huh... devs are asleep..
Anyone try out the Ubuntu Installer on the Play Store with the TFP( link below ) I wanna give it a go but was wondering what other peoples experience with it is first. Hi
Yes, I have been messing wth it since I got my Prime a few months ago (running Linux on it was the reason I bought in the first place). Like you, the native stuff seems a little too "fresh" and the risk of a brick a bit too much.
Anyway, the Linux Installers Zac is doing can work well on the Prime. There is an issue with the Ubuntu 12.04 Unity at present which I have not been able to figure out as I can't deal with Unity for longer than bout 60 seconds before reaching for Xfce anyway.
I have had good results using the Ubuntu 12.04 image and installing Xfce. The VNC client you choose makes a huge difference. I have found Jump Desktop by far the best (middle and right mouse buttons, scroll wheel, dock keyboard all work great) and it is quite close to using it natively.
The real downer with the chroot methods is there does not appear to be any way to do it except by running the GUI/X as root while in Ubuntu. Not really a workable option for any long term use. This is down to how Android handles permissions and the use of TCP/UDP ports. If you try to run the VNC server as anything other than root you just get a permission failure. I have not been able to figure out a way around this yet.
Worth the download to try it out.

I'd like to ask a serious question here.. and I'm not trying to put down Ubuntu or anything - if you're into Linux, it's a good choice...
But..
*Why* would someone want to take an Android tablet and install an OS that's not really tablet friendly on it? What's the benefits?
Unless you plan to keep it in the dock all the time - then why not just buy a netbook?
What am I missing here?
You don't have to take two devices with you if you have Ubuntu installed on Transformer. If you had a tablet AND a netbook the weight would be doubled... Netbooks also have poor screens and probably less battery life.

Versatility, choice, and because we can
Android is great for some things but a lot of what I do would be much better done in a Linux environment. The Prime has replaced my laptop, and having a dual boot option would make it pretty much the perfect piece of kit for me.
I didnt realise this was available !
I will be giving it a go as soon as i get home!!
Would prefer a native install, but this looks pretty easy and quick to do, so i'll give it a shot.
And another nice thing we are not able to use because of missing root rights
I really hope somebody finds and publishes a new way to gain root. (without unlocking)
Running Linux on it was also a reason for my to chose the Prime.
Great comments all... Personally I want Linux on the Prime for some of the reasons above ( portability, not having to carry two machines, "because we can" lol ) however I mostly want it because it should offer a much better development environment on the Prime which would be great. Still haven't gotten it up and running yet, but bought everything I need, should be able to play today

No it shouldn't have any affect. It does not touch anything outside of /data/local (or wherever you install the ubuntu.img file - could be your sdcard) - no system files are changed.

I think there was an issue with the Full V1 file. The dev re-uploaded today so you might try it again. However, the default Unity interface on Full does not seem to work on the Prime for whatever reason (Tegra 3 differences it has been said) so it might not be worth the effort until that is fixed. Firefox also does not work (I have never got Firefox of Chrome to work on any of these builds)
The older Ubuntu version (10.10 was it?) works fine, except Firefox just crashes, and Midori is the only currently working browser

Your kernel needs to support the loop device which is the way that the ubuntu.img file gets "mounted" on the system. I dont recall if the stock kernel supports this but I would be surprised if it doesn't
Stock kernel apparently has the loop device, as I have been able to run Ubuntu on stock (rooted of course).
Thanks for info on new upload of 12.04 full. Didnt you say you installed Xfce and 12.04 worked well?

Yes, Xfce I find works well. Just did not know how much effort you might be willing to put into it
Bit of advice - don't use "apt-get install xubuntu-desktop" to change to Xfce. That wants to install a ton of stuff that is not needed. Just try installing the the meta package "xfce4" and then add the other bits you want. I then removed the Unity desktop and it booted straight in to Xfce.
Edit: Actually, in this 12.04 image doing "apt-get install xubuntu-desktop" does not appear to be as bad. A previous image wanted to download 750Mb of stuff!
Edit2: Oh, and to get xfce loading instead of Unity, you need to edit /root/.vnx/xstartup and change the last line:
/etc/X11/Xsession
to be
startxfce4
..then restart the linux chroot by typing exit

Great info I have the 10.10 full image up and running and Firefox does seem to be working fine for me "out of the box". Think I'm going to try the 12 image and Xfce next.
Anyone have any optimization tips and tricks to get this running as fast as possible? I'm trying the Jump VNC client, seems pretty nice, just need to get some kind of gesture to hide the tablets nav bar as it covers the screen.
Hey Barryflanagan, I'm playing with Zac's images and I am wondering if you got ubuntu to read any external storage media plugged into the dock : like sdcard or usb external drive. I don't know if it's because of the dock proper, or ubuntu, or chroot, but I got the prime on ubuntu to read microsd on the prime proper but nothing routing through the dock..
As to why I'd want both linux and android, most of the time I'm fine with android, sometimes with the dock sometimes without. I don't have a laptop anymore and 2 weeks ago I happened to get to my first need that android couldn't handle: I have to trim and clean 10 000+ files of music library with many copies and variations by file names, lengths, quality, and tags, and to pick the good tracks manually, and nothing on the android's ecosystem is as good or useful as mediamonkey. I've had to borrow a laptop from somebody to get the job done. I'm pretty sure in linux I could have found a working application-- if the usb hard drive for those 70gigs could have been recognized through the dock. Anyway -- also, some more intensive work like the occasional flyer or poster I design for friends.
By the way, have anyone tried to get Wine working on the chroot ubuntu? Maybe with kernel overclocked to 1.8 it might work?

Is it possible to run Ubuntu offline, like without VNC, or do you need internet to use it? I followed the instructions on the app and connected with vnc. I would rather use splashtop and connect to my desktop if ubuntu cant be run offline.

I'm confused as to what you're asking. Technically, Ubuntu is running offline. You're only connecting to the GUI over VNC. You do not need internet.

Ah, I see. But what use has ubuntu without the GUI? I'm obviously new to this, but I assumed that you could use the ubuntu OS offline. Like open and use programs like open office. How would you be using ubuntu if you were at a place without internet?
I along with the others in the community have recently been served by GOOGLE with the pull of the apk servers.
If you happen to hard reset your Q then your Q can no longer be setup rendering it useless.
I am willing to payout $50.00 to any dev that can engineer an apk that will allow the user to setup a stock NEXUS Q without googles servers.
The APK will have to do the following -> access and setup the initial setup, this includes, wifi, bluetooth, nfc and adb debugging to be able to load APK's to the systems as I am sure many will be coming that will make the Q worth building this for, hence why GOOGLE pulled the servers because they saw this coming ....all as the original apk did but without the GOOGLE servers or need for servers.
I have 3 of these units and they are great for music, I love the internal amps and want to retain all the internal functions of the ports, also the audio is better quality when stock compared to rooted and cm10.1'ed.
I have one working setup still, one on the shelf and one with cm10.1 working with cheapcast.
Bounty is as follows this will be updated as members add their payment amounts.
IAN-$50.00
***If you are going to attempt this or have questions DEVS email me is best.***
Thanks-Ian

put this to the top sticky please
Even if somebody makes an apk, there's still the issue of getting it on a stock locked Q.

it would be used from your phone like the factory apk
The problem I see is the Q's original BT authentication method has to hacked. If this passes through the servers then this is a serious hurdle. You cannot pair anything that requires you enter a pin on the Q as the dialog doesn't even exist. Considering how crippled stock is, unlocking and installed either a stock based ROM or CM10 would be my suggestion.

Well if someone can write a stock rom or explain how to get adb debugging via usb working without the need to authorized it that would be a start. Because adb via wifi doesnt get the prompt and once you hookup a mouse in host mode you can not get the same usb to mount adb.
Any suggestions??
That is the biggest road block for me, while i know you can work around that it is a big crippling part of the q.
Is there enough interest for a dev to look at the factory setup procedure and see if they can re engineer around needing the servers? ? IDK

There has been a working stock based ROM for about a year now. Prior to Google killing the Q function it worked as a dual mode with Nova Launcher as a desktop. Even now the desktop mode still works. All that's needed is a keyboard. Also ADB starts on boot even on a fresh install and even after a hard reset. In the current test build everything except Q mode and BT work.

Are you talking about the one I used in my tutorial?
In dual boot does it have external AMP support?
So it does not prompt you for authorizing ADB once you try to? all 4.2.2 roms include that unless someone deved around that.
Yes I can adb in recovery on the rom I am using but not once booted into the rom it comes up unauthorized.
My Q's must have internal amp support. That is the whole point of the Q, if it doesn't why wouldn't I just go get a Denon Receiver and plug in a chrome cast??

Which tutorial, what ROM?
The ROM I'm talking about supports every function that the stock Q does. BT never worked correctly without a workaround on the Q initially. The needed support was missing in the stock firmware when they released it.
It does not require ADB auth to connect.
Again, it supports every function that the stock Q does as well as having Nova as a "desktop".
(hint- check my sig)

Are you talking ADB or initial setup? If you are talking ADB, then there is no login. Simply connect the Q to your computer and start ADB. If you are talking inital setup then you connect a KB and hit the "HOME" key and it skips setup and takes you to Nova launcher.

Your best option is to use BubbleUPnP and AirCast or similar app to fill in the gaps. Depending on how things go I may have an update in the next week or so.

Not well. Check the weather in San Diego (over 90deg) and imagine no AC and the only ventilation is air from the outside.
Upnpcast...
For everyone still looking for Chromecast support: You may try upnpcast by bubbleguum. It runs as a service on your phone / tablet and enables you to cast to any dlna renderer on your network.
The cool thing about it is, that it works right out of the gmusic app on your phone. As soon as a dlna device is detected on your network, the chromecast button will appear in the gmusic app. Just select the renderer you want to play to and you are good to go.
To play to the Q, install cm10.1 and a dlna renderer (I use bubbleupnp). Running for hours now without a prob. Note though, that the app is 1.99 for unlimited use.
Due to the oppressive heat in my home I purchased some portable A/C units. It cost me going to and speaking at the Big Android BBQ this year which kind of bites as it was to one my last one for a while (baby on the way). Good news is that it is cool enough to run my box and now have a ton of time to dev.
How would you guys fell about xbmc/yatse vs bubble? I'll post more details as they become available.

I installed your ROM last night working well. Is there a way to default it to boot to the launcher without it being attached to a keyboard or display seems some of the other streaming options don't load till it hits the launcher screen other then that cheapcast is always working for me. Wish we could also get the q to sleep when unused and turn off the ring.
Can we build a chromecast rom without using cheapcast? I.e lunch the same software as the chromecast device on our Q's?
If we build chromium content shell for android and feed it the app.conf from the chromecast firmware OTA (I cant post links so I cant post the full app.conf)? Or do we need something more? Any linux/android experts have a clue? We can build the content_shell using the build instructions on the chromium wiki @ goggle code. (I cant post outside links). I cant find any web-server or something like that in the chromecast OTA 12940 firmware dump I found on the internet. Does the content_shell include a web-server?
app.conf
