After wiping everything and installing a fresh copy of hyperdrive 5.7 i started to get low storage notifications. Shows roughly 1gb free space available with misc files being a touch over 11gb. When I click on misc files to see what is hogging up all the room it says system memory is 6.38gb. So there's a 5gb ish difference that unaccounted for. Anyone have any ideas?
I've I tried going back to RLS4 and numbers were nearly identical. Reinstalled 5.7 and no change.

I assume you did a backup before flashing the new rom, is your recovery set to store backups in the external sd card or the "internal"? I've got TWRP and I'm pretty sure the default was to store it on the internal card. That may account for your missing space.

I had the same issue without realizing since I don't have much installed/stored on my phone, but this was the problem. My nandroid backup was still in my internal memory and it was taking up ~3gb worth of memory. So OP, this is probably your issue (like he said, I just figured I'd back him up).

I downloaded 5.7 from OTA onto my external sd card. Booted into recovery using ROM manager, wiped all data (x3). wiped cache, and then tried to install the new ROM and received an error. Any idea what is going on here.

Welcome to xda, it's hard to answer your question without additional information, like what the error was. Also if you want to get the attention of the Dev for this ROM you'll either want to ask your question on the thread for the ROM or else start a new thread in the Q&A section. Piggybacking your question on an unrelated problem isn't exactly kosher.
@amofiav Glad that was all it took. It is frustrating that so many apps default using the internal card for storage.

I think I am similarly afflicted! I can't figure how to check this and delete any unwanted files. I have connected my phone to my computer but cannot seem to locate any big unneeded files. I have less than 1 GB left of storage.

I apologize if this has been answered somewhere else here before. I have been searching for days and have not found the full answers to my questions anywhere.
Recently I updated my GT-P7510 CM9 to an experimental CM10 from by pershoot. After getting it up and running I was looking at my internal storage usage and numbers didn't seem to add up (must have done a dirty flash at some point in the past to cause this). My internal storage in root explorer showed 8.93gb in use and 28.01 total storage. I copied everything to a USB drive to back it up and noticed there was only 7.45gb actually on the internal storage. I have seen this problem before on my S2, and I always just reformat the internal SD card (emmc) to regain the missing space. However, since the tab does not have a micro SD slot, I have no way of wiping the internal sdcard (data/media) without wiping out the rom too from how I understand it. Somebody correct me if I am wrong...
So, does anybody know of a way to successfully wipe/format the sdcard (data/media directory) in CWM or other method that will not wipe out the rom and send the device straight to cwm with no way to install a new rom? Or do I have to revert back to stock to accomplish the format of sdcard like I have read for a few other similar situations? Everything works fine (CM10 & CM9 both run awesome), I just want that extra 1.48gb of missing/phantom storage back. And, without mass storage mode, I cannot perform a disk check in win7. This has really got me frustrated to find a solution without having to start over. I wish this tab had a micro SD slot!

Ok, I seemed to have figured this one out and now feel pretty stupid for not digging a bit further before asking.
After I decided to go ahead with the sdcard format using CWM, I noticed that the space was still being used somewhere. After I started to dig a bit, I noticed that all of my apps still worked after the format. Basically, the extra space is being consumed by the /data/app folder housing all user apps. CWM must be designed to ignore this directory when formatting the internal sdcard which is why there was still some storage being used.
I feel like an ubernoob for asking this, but my S2's internal sdcard is not mapped to data/media, so I had to learn a bit better about how this thing works I suppose. Anyways, I hope this information can be useful to someone out there having similar questions.

Although that is a similar problem, I asked if there is a way to fix it without going that route? I appreciate your reply, but I already knew it could be resolved by going back to stock (2nd paragraph of my post).

Ow sorry didnt notice few words,i think u could just flash a cwm via odin wich can wipe/reset all data if im not mistaking,
I'll chek this out is there any cwm'ds who can do that,coz i rememba reading one forum where guy was complaining that he did wipe and everything was formated!

I can accomplish a full format of the internal sdcard on my galaxy s2 without it affecting the rom in any way whatsoever and it is running cwm 6.0.1.0 also. From how I understand it, the partitions are set up differently on the s2 and this device. The s2 has a separate partition for the internal sdcard making it possible to format via cwm. On this device, the sdcard is part of the data partition meaning wiping it will leave you with no rom installed and no storage on the sdcard. I think all versions of cwm can wipe the slate clean, it is just a matter of everything else being wiped clean also. But, if you are aware of a cwm that let's me accomplish this, I would love to find it. Thanks again.

I have the same issue .. I was manually formatted using my windows 7 laptop.. flash back to old stock samsung firmware.. still 4.11 GB internal USb storage instead of 11.8 GB.. Any help please..

So basically I lost access to any kind of storage on my SGS2 running CM10.1. Here's what happened. I was using internal and sd for a long time, then, as I needed my SDHC elsewhere i removed it. Nothing was lost as all data was stored internally. BUT. After formatting SD in FAT32 and putting it back everything crashed. Apps are refusing to work, demanding an SD card. Files Manager says that folder was lost. All of them. First thing I wanted to do was to flash CM once again, a newer NB but my PC does not read internal storage either, and putting it in sd doesn't do me any good as cwm doesn't see it also. CM can access internal, so i flashed the same version of CM once again - the only one i got there. Nothing changed. I'm a bit lost and seek any advice

I've just done a factory reset using Titanium Backup and the Nova Launcher backup system. It was a complete disaster (well, maybe not complete--I needed the cleanup) as neither of the backups functioned correctly and I lost all my apps, etc. After restoring from scratch, I did a bit of research. By default, both Titanium and Nova backups were saved to sdcard0 (as opposed to externalsdcard). I'm a relative newbie to the S3, but I think sdcard0 is the internal phone storage and therefore wiped when I did the factory reset. Am I correct?
If so, I have to wonder why both backups defaulted to this storage location. I've since moved both folders to external sd card and changed the backup paths on both apps. To preclude similar disasters, can I rename the somewhat confusing sdcard0 to something more recognisable (internal or phone storage seems reasonable) or would this cause more mayhem?
If I'm completely out to lunch with all of this, can someone educate me on the mysteries of the S3's storage configuration

The default is there since there are phones which have no extSDcard (the very cheap Android models and going up to Nexus and even more expensive models).
Do not rename anything - just remember that extSDcard (or the SECOND card that you get to see) is the 'removable' one.
Also note that even sdcard0 is not wiped by "normal wiping", and you probably issued a specific command in recovery or something in order to reformat that!

I certainly don't remember issuing any command that would have reformatted the sdcard0, but you never know. Was I right in redirecting both backups to the extSDcard?
At some time you have flashed an Aosp 4.2.x Rom or the 4.2.1 leak.
As this has facility for users your sd card is formatted to accommodate different user data via an emulated set up.
To get things back to normal on 4.1.2 I suggest backing up your sd card and formatting it in settings/storage.

Sorry,I read in haste!
Titanium does default to storing on internal sd, so a factory reset would wipe the backup, ditto nova launcher, so in titanium set folder to backup to external sd, no need to worry too much about nova as the titanium backup of it will restore its layout.
Apologies for the confusion, my fault!
Thanks again--I've already set up Titanium to back up to external card, so the next time I contemplate a factory reset, I can do so without fear!! :fingers-crossed:

I have the straight talk version of the Samsung Galaxy S II. I am aware the i777 and the straight talk S595G are the same exact phone. But my question is...installing a ROM. I do not have a microSD card to use, and I wanted to know if I could use the internal storage on my phone to install a ROM. From a quick research session, I learned you have to wipe the data and cache, but I am unsure if that will wipe the internal storage...where the ROM.zip would be.
Simple terms, can I install custom ROM using the internal storage instead of an SD card.
The hardware is the same, but the memory partitioning is different and there is a different way to flash custom firmware. Please see this thread.

Doesn't matter where you put the rom as long as you know where to find it in recovery when you're flashing it. A factory reset from recovery won't delete anything on your internal card, nor will formatting /system. If you do it from within the rom itself, like in the settings menu, then you WILL lose everything from your internal card.
That's why it's best to only do these things in recovery.

I'm running the latest CM snapshot. I've been getting the infamous "Insufficient Storage Available" error for a while not, usually with chrome. There are various solutions. The "delete /data/app-lib/<app>/lib" solution was working ok for me but I can no longer find chrome in there anymore for some reason. I've already moved every app that can be moved to the "internal" SD card. All the "solutions" are really just workarounds trying to clear space.
Is it possible to increase the size of the partition by re partitioning the internal storage?

I know that apps can be moved to the SD card. That isnt a solution nor my question.

i'm running viper rom with the sdcard swap mode.
i'm now back to getting insufficient memory messages when trying to update apps or sometimes run apps. it shows i still have plenty of free memory... i have been moving apps to sd card and that works for a little while.

You need to look at internal storage, not SD card storage.
So I did system dump today to explore the files on my computer see what's hogging all of my space.
Background: I have only have 13 apps installed.
What I found is that my data/data is 346 MB and my data/delvik-cache is 452 MB.
So the files installed by CM are getting more numerous and of greater size. Not sure what to do to solve this problem.

same issue here. davlik cache is similar to a cache of your applications so they start faster. So it doesnt matter if you move apps to SD, you'll still have davlik.
Also, many apps will still store data in internal memory eventhough the app itself is on SD. I wish there were a way to move the data.
Or as I initially suggested, re-partitioning.

well, there isn't ANY easy re-partitioning tool for android out in the wild that i KNOW of ... but, (at least to let you know) ... I'm currently still trying to _hack_ something together similar to the internal storage-partition upgrades that the other HTC One devices with MSM8960 recieved ... where they officially unified the /user partition with the internal /sd-card (fat) partition! ... it might take a few weeks until i have something to show around (as work keeps me very busy throughout the week), but i'm working on it.
just as a quick question so CM currently DOES put it's dalvik to the /user partition??? i thought they put it to /cache??? (at least on CM10.1 and CM10.2) ................ so feedback would be highly welcome :laugh:
