How to start with SGS3? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys i had an HOX and today i changed it for a SGS3 to try for fisrt time a Samsung device in my life. I dont know any about Samsung devices so i have some doubts about it:
1.- My device is a i9300 with Android 4.1.2 with a notification for OTA update. Do i take it or not?
2.- I want to root and flash a custom ROM/kernel but i need a Custom recovery. Which of them are available for HOX and how do i install it?
3.- I have heard a lot of IMEI corrupted and i want to backup EFS folder. Where is it located?
Thanks

1) Its your wish actually. Take it and test.
2) For rooting, CF Auto-Root. Available for HOX?? O__O Well if you meant SGS3, then PhilZ recovery is pretty good. Check the original development forum. Install the drivers prior to all this. You can get the drivers from the Unified Toolkit in the original development section. Or you can search Google.
3) Well, IMEI is stored in /efs/ partition. Using root explorer, you can find it. I had backed it up using SGS3 Unified Toolkit.

There is a tool here on XDA for your PC, you have the option to backup your EFS folder on your PC or internal storage.

Oh I forgot, yes Philz recovery can do that too. But nevertheless when backing up I would move EFS folder to external storage it even the PC. Because when the internal storage gets corrupted the backup is also gone.

Yes agreed. I double back up EFS personally. I have a tasker task that copies /efs to /extSdCard then I have folder sync copy /extSdCard to a network location. I'd like to think I am covered

Thanks guys now i have root, TWRP (as toolkit recommended), unsecured boot and busybox. Also I have made a backup from EFS folderand as far as I know last thing I need is to make a nandroid backup from recovery right? And for installing roms can you say the correct order to do that? On Hox we had a hboot screen we should access by typing adb reboot bootloader and then erase chace, flash kernel with fastboot commands and erase cache again from fastboot. Then and only then we could install a rom from recovery so I dont know if I have to do something similiar here orwhat? I appreciate your help.
Pd: What's triangle away all people is talking about? I know it's an app for resetting flash counter but what happen if I don't use it? Will the device fail?

A first nandroid if your original rom is always good to keep, just in case.
For flashing Roms have a look in the Q+A section's FAQ thread, anything included in detail and YouTube also got some videos for flashing Roms.
You need to reset the counter in case you want to go back to factory original status e.g. For warranty claims. Another situation for instance is if you got an allshare cast dongle which somehow registers if the counter is not 0 and then will not work.

You can also use adb as your used to before. With triangle away be careful and read chainfires thread carefully. I personally didn't use triangle away, the exclamation mark at the beginning doesn't annoy me and I don't use for e.g. an aircast dongle. When you have a warranty case it is better to go back to stock and reset the flash counter via triangle away method

[Q] Need some assistance please - Rooting

Hi guys,
Firstly apologises in advance, I'm using my phone to browse so trying to navigate what I need to know.
I be using this guide to root, I read it several times and it makes sense for me.
Before I root though and this is a huge factor, is there anyway I can save all my current apps and restore them after flashing a new rom?. I know titantium backup does this but you need to be rooted to achieve this and before you root I understand you need to have a clean wipe for the phone which I haven't done yet since I'm hesistant reinstalling the apps all again 1 by 1.
Thanks

T-mobile UK, right? You have an I9100?
You can use that guide, sure. But I find CF-root to be even easier, as you don't need to use an outside application. Just flash the CF-root kernel for your build of android. Done.
well i frankly neva did a wipe or wat ever i jus rooted ,flashd kernel ,roms......but one thing i neva forget is the efs folder to backup......

Thanks, I'm still new to this trying to understand everything before rooting.
So backup efs?, what is it and does exactly.
I was under the impression that once I should pick the kernel closest in the about section?.
you will only be able to backup EFS after the rooting...
first Root with Cf-root then the first thing you do EFS back using Ktool (search on google play)
You'll be amazed how easy it is once you've done it (I did it a couple of weeks ago). It's all available right here.
Pay particular attention to this when choosing the kernel:
Listen closely, for I will say zis only once!
Go to Settings -> About phone -> Kernel Version. Note the string present there:
2.6.35.7-I9100XXKG1-CL349526
What matters most (KG1) in this case, is in bold. Try to find the matching file under downloads:
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG1-v4.1-CWM4.zip

Good luck dude, let us know if you have any questions.
Thanks UK, so CF root it shall be:
Instructions - ODIN (short)
- Flash CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar (from the attached zip) as PDA in ODIN, without repartition. Done.
Correct?
Then how does one flash a rom?.
Yes, you flash the TAR file in Odin.
Flashing ROMs comes after you have rooted. First, you put your desired ROM zip in the root of your internal sdcard. Then once you have installed a CF-Root kernel, your device will have ClockworkMod (CWM) Recovery. You access this by holding Power+Home+Volume (Up) until your phone reboots into recovery mode. Then you simply follow the instructions to flash the ROM (read instructions from the developer and always backup).
^Well that's for custom ROMs. If you're talking stock Samsung ROMs, there are many guides around for installing those.

Ok makes sense.
So flash tar file with Odin giving me Root Access.
Grab the desired Rom, so for example MIUI then can you elaborate on the kernel. Because this is the one things that bothers me the most because I can't get my head around it.
From reading I need to get the kernel closest to the one on my about phone info correct?.
Yes that's right. As in the example, where the kernel version says I9100XXKG1, you find a similar one based on the KG1 kernel.
Ok all makes sense, thanks for all the help.

You should read the guides and faqs everything is posted .
EFS is a backup that allows you to restore your phones EFS folder that contains the IMEI for your phone . Its rare but possible that flashing may break IMEI leading to no network connection .
jje
It's always a good idea to backup - search on the market for some of the best solutions. But honestly, I just winged it the first time I rooted with CF-Root, and went without backup. It's up to you.
But after you have rooted get kTool off the market and back up EFS, put it in the cloud or on your computer so you don't lose it.
Custom ROMs normally require a full data wipe first time flashing, so get titanium backup pro and backup all your apps from there.

Newbie questions before rooting

I still have a few questions before rooting my phone for the first time.
1) if i root 2.3.6 using the right kernel, Can i still install an ics custom rom like resurrection?
2) if i root stock 4.0.3 Poland version or argentinian version, final result of installing a new custom Rom is gonna be the same because it completely replace the first one?
3) what's the difference between nandroid backup and cwm way to backup custom rom? Do i need to keep my backup inside the phone in order to unbrick it tomorrow, or may i just store it on my notebook and delete it from the phone?
Thanks a lot!!

1) Rooting is just to give you access to CWM.. ergo the ability to install custom ROMS so you can install ROMS after rooting
2) When you flash a new ROM (which is rooted) then you dont have to bother about what did you did before that..
3) If i'm not mistaken CWM only allows u to do a nandroid backup.. And if u want to restore to the backup ( in ur case unbrick :silly U need to have that in ur sd card :good:
Happy rooting.. Happy flashing..
1) Follow whatever instructions the rom you're wanting to use has to the letter.
2) If you install a custom rom, then yes, obviously it will replace any stock rom you flash it over the top of.
3) A CWM backup is a Nandroid backup. It's the same thing. You can store your backups wherever you want. I have my 4 most recent Nandroids on my phone, and I have every backup I've ever done on my phone stored on my PC (and another copy on an external drive I use for backups). So I guess the question you're asking is, can I take a Nandroid backup from ages ago stored on my PC, put it on my phone & restore it. Am I right ? If that's what you're asking, the answer is yes.
Thanks. Actually i was asking in case my phone bricks after installing a new rom. I guess i won't be able to come it back to life if i don t have the backup in the phone.
And one more thing. What is efs backup. Do I also need to do it?
Thanks
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
Yes. The 2nd thing you should do after your root your phone (first thing is do a Nandroid backup) is to get kTool from Google Play & backup your EFS. Before you install another rom or kernel do both of those.
Keep a copy on your external sdcard & keep another copy on your PC. Just in case you ever need it. We get quite a few people on here every week with IMEI/EFS details gone & most don't have EFS backups.
thanks!

I've actually used that app a few times well (about 5) and haven't had any issues but once you get CWM installed and you flash kernels through it you won't get the yellow triangle.

There will always be a risk when using anything that manupulates root access, but triangle away is quite safe, as for what kernel if works on, most kernel threads will say if it is compatiable or not, but only with ICS kernels, not GB kernels.
"...once you get CWM installed and you flash kernels through it you won't get the yellow triangle."
What do you mean by that? I actually don´t need to use the app, because triangle will dissapear anyway after flashing a Kernel?

You will still have the triangle after flashing a new rom or kernel, the best way to get rid of it is triagle away, this app will also reset your flash counter.
Once you get a working CWM, let's say you're using Cyanogenmod 9 and you want to flash over the stock kernel.
You'd put the kernel file on the memory of the device (sdcard) and boot in CWM recover and flash from there and you won't get the triangle.
The triangle won't go away now if you unless you use a USB jig or the triangle away app. So get rid of the triangle now and when you want to try a new kernel flash it through CWM and the triangle won't appear. Flash a kernel through download mode and you'll get the triangle.

Fixing permissions is automatic I believe in CWM recovery. It's an option in the recovery menu. Remember to wipe data and cache (dalvik too) when flashing a next rom or else you won't be able to boot.

Thanks for the info mate
By the way, you should really just buy a USB Jig off eBay for a few quid, it resets the custom binary counter (on old bootloaders) and can also force your phone into download mode after a bad flash. Handy to have around. Also, now that you have rooted your phone, download EFS Pro (found here on XDA) and back up your EFS folder before any flashing. Lose this folder and your in serious trouble!

Hi! When rooting or flashing a custom rom or kernel, do I lose internal sd card content?
Where is the EFS folder I need to backup?

[Q] Updating GT-I9500 From rooted Stock Rom to newer firmware ??

Guys I have a Samsung S4 GT-I9500 version running on XXUAMDK the official stock ROM. Rooted using the Adam's Kernel method with TWRP recovery.
Now I have to update it to the newer version XXUBMEA which cannot obviously be done by OTA or Kies
So my question is that if i use Odin and follow the normal procedure to flash the ROM
1. Would it brick my phone?
2. Would the phone be still rooted.?
3. Will it wipe out all my applications installed later?
If the phone will not have the root. What steps could i possibly perform to root it again
U see i dont wanna take risks on such a costly phone.
Please any experienced help would greatly be appreciated

You should make a backup of your installed applications using Titanium Backup. You will then need to Odin back to the original Firmware because you said you can't get OTA updates for some reason. This will cause a loss in root. It will also wipe all your data and programs off the device. If done correctly you will not brick your phone. Make sure the file is in the PDA slot. You can root the phone again by going here. Once everything is setup you can use Titanium Backup to restore all your applications. Then make sure to use TriangleAway to reset your flash counter.

Like JellyYogurt said we need more detail your post is confusing this is probably a easy fix and you need to read up more on how to flash roms.First of all there is nothing wrong with slimrom I have flashed it many times without any problems..."unzip files" why would you want to unzip files to flash a rom?
Rom's come in a couple of formats zip files which you flash with a custom recovery ( you do not unzip them) or .tar files which you flash with odin (these are normally stock roms).
Can you get into recovery? (If yes perform a factory reset and reboot ) see if that works,if not you mention you have a backup can't you put your backup on ext SD card with a card reader and restore from recovery or do you mean you delated it ?
If you just want to go back to stock touchwiz and not bother with custom roms again just download your phone version from sammobile and flash with odin. Also another misconception is that you said you rooted then tried to flash a rom why? You only need to root your phone if you are going to stay on stock rom and use root apps and not flash custom roms. The reason is 99% of custom roms come already rooted so you can skip rooting your phone yourself.
More detail is needed so people can answer you correctly

I flashed the rom using the instructions on slimroms.net. but i think i didnt 'wipe data and cache'. the unzip thing is an example of how unstable it is. I can go recovery. But my comp is broke so i didnt get ro go to sammobile for the files. I created alot of backups with titanium but it seems they are all deleted (didnt move to another device, live and learn). Thanks for the speedy assistance. Ill try odin and sammobile tonight after work. Just figured out how to go back into recovery mode after i made this post.

Also titanium only backups up system and user apps it is not a complete backup of your system for that you needed to do a nandroid backup with your recovery (if you don't know what that is there are some stickies threads explaining what it is) Good luck.

Okay. Got it. First I had to go to my slimkat settings and check root access etc, thats why nothing worked. then I kept trying to unzip the gapps folder, not knowing it had to be flashed also(stopped reading right before that in the instructions, oops). After i flashed the gapps i could get into playstore np and its running smooth. First rooting attempt alittle panicky but my s3 now has 11.01gbs of storage and all the apps i really need. Thank you both for the quick reply. Sorrying for noobing out back there. Im starting to understand alittle more. Im going to read on back-up/recovery and hopefully be rooting this Gflex on Tuesday.
Good to hear ur fone is working once again

Flash a recovery of your choice...via odin
I prefer philz touch recovery...
Go in recovery and backup your current rom... in backup and restore options to ext SD card so that it remains safe when you flash a new rom after factory reset...
2.. Backup efs by any tool available.. There are many on play store...
K tool, neat efs tool etc...
And same thing... Keep it at some safe place so whenever needed it can be used..
3..of course you could upgrade to 4.4.2 if you like.. But as Samsung hasn't released 4.4.2 for s3 so no Samsung features with 4.4.2 as of now...
But 4.3 us available and it's quite stable...
But before flashing any 4.3 Sammy rom change your modem to any modem which is mg4+... read about that on xda..
Always have a legitimate backup in case anything weird happens...

Follow the guides in general forum, sticky thread. If you don't really know what root means for you then why bother?

Download ktool from googleplay backup your efs. Copy the backup file somewhere in your computer for safe keeping.
