Hey guys,
I bought my S3 exactly 1 year ago and everything ran smooth and was working alright. My phone is rooted and it runs with CyanogenMod 10.1.
About a week ago, from one the to the other I can't charge my phone like always.
If the phone is turned on and I plug in the charger (doesn't matter if AC or USB) the phone drains the battery whilst it is actually charging - wtf ?
The only way to charge it is to turn it off and charge it while it's powered off, but even then it charges ridiculous slow.
I did no changes to the ROM or the kernel, it just happened like "over night".
I tried to reflash the ROM etc.. but nothing worked yet. In my opinion it's not a software issue but I don't really know.
Has anyone ever had a problem like this?
PS: At the moment I am not in my home country (not before august) - so if it's a hardware issue I'll reflash the stock rom, unroot it and sent it to Samsung then.
There are plenty of identical posts to this, with the most common cause being a faulty charger or lead.
Which kernel do you use?

I read dozens of articles but I didn't find a useful answer.
The chargers and the cables are definitely not the problem because my friend also has a S3 and his phone charges normally with all chargers and cables. My battery is also working fine in his phone.
So no battery, charger or cable problem in my opinion.

ROM: CyanogenMod 10.1 20130531 NIGHTLY
Kernel: Siyah Kernel 1.9.1
But I don't think that the kernel is makes any problems. It worked like a charm for ages and then from on the to another it got ****ed up.
Usual reply flash stock rom .
Test fails replace cable and test .

If returning to stock doesn't resolve it then the charging circuit inside the phone is faulty - return for warranty repair.
that's your cable or your stop contact is trouble, try in other cable :cyclops:

Had exactly the same problem. I changed the stock charger with an other one and now the phone charges in 2 hours.
There is an app called Galaxy Current. Search in the play store. It gives you the input current when you charge the phone. If it is not 1000mA, then it's probably a faulty charger.
Moreover, i think it is a known problem with stock chargers. A lot of people has experienced the same issue.
Thanks for all your replies but it's definitely NOT the cable and it's NOT the charger.
My friend has also a S3 and we tried the following things:
My cable and my charger
My cable and his charger
His cable and my charger
His cable and his charger
Everything failed.
Then we tried:
Charging my battery with his phone (succeed, so my battery is working well)
Charging his battery with my phone (failed)
I also installed the App "Galaxy Charging Current *Lite*" - values were pretty alright (466mA on USB, 999mA on AC)
I have no STOCK ROM with me and no chance to download it in the next 2 weeks - the only thing I have is an old STOCK ROM backup (should also do the job). I'll try to flash it on my phone and if that fails - I can definitely say that it is a hardware issue (phone charging circuit, ..)

Yesterday I completely unrooted my S3, flashed the Stock 4.1.2 ROM but no changes at all. I can definitely exclude a software problem now.
So I am going to send it back to Samsung in ~ 1 week.
Thanks for you help though.
My phone is repaired now - there were some bad contacts on the usb-to-mainboard connector. Samsung fixed it and now it's working again.
Thanks for your help though.

can anyone help me fix my phone. my phoine is S3 using foxhound rom 2.5 i charge my phone. use it for messaging or playing a bit but my battery drains. i doesnt happen before. its only now that my battery drains while charging... im using my AC outlet charger.
Try another charger and lead first.
Try another USB cable. Samsung cables are known to be of bad quality. If the charger + USB cable doesn't work, then most probably your charging port is not functioning. I had the same problem with my phone, gave it to the service center and the phone started charging again.
You can even try blowing air in the port. Sometimes dust gathers in there and that prevents the phone from charging.
Hope I helped.

many identical posts are already about this. standard answer is to change the cable first. :good:
Ok so I was on Omega 4.2.2 v45.1
Anyway, after about 2-3 weeks of use on this ROM, I now have charging problems! (could be hardware?)
So, I charged my phone overnight with my official S3 charger (wired) and it went from 39% to only around 65%!!!!!!
Then I took my charger to work with me (and my other S3 charger, which is an official S3 USB chord to a S3 USB plug)
So first I tried with the hard wired plug - 4 hours and it went from 59% to around 86%
Now I am at home and charging from 46%, so far I am on 47% and it has been around 10 minutes!
It is not a battery problem because I have 3 official genuine batteries and they can't all be faulty at once!!
Then I borrowed my sisters Blackberry charger which works fine on her S3 and it doesn't even charge!!!
WTF is going on? Should I just get a replacement? I have insurance but how can I unroot to stock so they can never know of this forbidden secret?
Usually it is cable related. S3 has unstable connection detection which limits to 100mA if it thinks the usb connection is unstable.
Try a new cable (not your sisters blackberry) to see if any better.
If not, there are kernels (eg perseus / devil ?) That can turn off this detection via stweaks / devil tools apps...
If still not, return to stock and test. May be faulty usb port in your s3.
There's about 3 threads a day created here for slow charging so please do use search, as per forum rules

But this is the problem, my sister has same phone and my friends and they use my charger and works perfect for them, but I use mine or their charger, then slow charger so I am thinking it is my phone
How do I get this kernel update, I am now on I9300_Omega 4.1.2_v43.6 (I just downgraded from 4.2.2 because it used more battery and less stable)
Also,Thanks for help
UPDATE! OK it is hardware related because I just had to move the cable a bit to get it to charge! so my S3 USB mini socket is damaged, but if so, why does it still charge? (even though charge is dead slow, so slow now it hasn't charged from 46% it's still on 46%!!!))
Stability detection... that's why. As mentioned in previous post

Hi guys,
i have a serious problem here my S3 doesn't seem to charge at all, i have tried putting my battery in another S3 and it charged well with the same charger, so the problem seems to be from the phone it self.
Does any one ran through somthing like that before, please help.
thanks

I've tried many chargers and cables, the only one that works for me is my nexus 7 mains charger, I get a steady 1 amp using that. I can't believe so many chargers and cables just can't charge my S3 quickly enough!

Hello friends... I noticed the battery charging problem with strange way in my galaxy s3. I'm running android 4.3 cm based custom rom with googy kernel. My charger does not charge correctly as it was doing. I'm using stock charger with stock cable & was working well but now i noticed since 3 to 4 days, whenever i plug the charger it shows the running charging indicator but it won't going up the percentage for long time. For example. if the battery percent is 20% then it shows the opposite response in descending order like 20%, 19%, 18% like this. Very strange issue. As it should charge the device upword like 20%, 21%, 22%. If i unplug the charger & then plug the charger again then sometime it starts charging correctly in ascending order as i was running well. I checked with another cable but the problem still same. It solve the problem with plug & unplug the charger then can charge the device with normall. Plz help to find & solve the problem. Sorry for the bad english. Thanx
Goi back to stock rom, see if problem still exists. If it does then your kernel or rom is the cause, bugs are to be expected in early releases.

If it is the cause of early releases or kernel then after the unplug & plug the charger why it starts charging well? I mean if its sure it is cause of kernel & roms then why sometimes the problem sovled after unplug or plug. Well i will change the rom to 4.2.2 which i was running & will check the issue again.
try to change the usb cable
that's work for me!
and maybe works for you

Use this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.abmantis.galaxychargingcurrent.free
Monitor the MAX value (others do not matter).
Check with your charger what the MAX value reports. Also test on Computer. If you have 2 cables (which I assume is the case) test both on PC and Both in wall socket

Sir i checked with stock cable in waal socket max value got- 1000, on the other hand I got 300 max value on pc.
Another cable MAx value in wall socket is- 400
On pc max value is - 300
Ok so with wall socket + stock cable, charging should be normal (1000 is normal). If it still charges slow, you're experiencing drain

i checked again to determine the problem clearly & noticed that whenever i properly insert the cable to mobile's usb port after unplug & plug then it starts charging well & good speed. I wonder if it is the problem with usb jack or cable's usb. After all what you think ?

I noticed same problem with my phone some time ago.
i used powerbank recently and it started not charging.. when i charge and use phone, battery is discharged. i thought the batteries inside powerbank are old. changed.. but sometimes charged, sometimes not or very slow. then i noticed that problem persist when i charge phone at home too. i unplugged and plugged cable, then chargin was normal..
My friend has problem with cable some time ago too..
I hope it it problem of cable, not phone...
You've eliminated the charger as the cause so now only remains the software or the charging IC in the phone.
As per my my original suggestion, flash a stock ROM (not a leak or beta -flash the offical 4.1.2 for your country) to test. If the problem still remains then your phone needs a new motherboard.
I had been having the same problems when I installed CM 4.3. I have gone back to the stock rom that came with the phone and the problems have gone.
Is this cause of of higher value of charging with fast charging kernel support? Bcoz i had charged the device for some time with 1300MA value.
The link below with MickyFoley's tip was the solution for me, now everything works fine again after a lot of struggle...

I have tried different cables.. original one too.. its charging normal from wall charger... but charging is stuck on 67%.... any ideas what do now??
try with another battery and see if it's hardware related
now i came up with another problem... My S3 is now only charging from usb port of laptop/PC/LCD TV.. its not charging on wall charger anymore. i dont know what the hell is wrong??
Get another charger
I have tried different different chargers... but no one is charging my S3. its just charging from laptop/PC/ LCD Tv..
Factory reset, then flash the latest stock firmware for your country with Odin -factory reset again in recovery afterward.
If it still won't charge, particularly when switched off, then you have a hardware fault.
Replace the battery before testing.
