Dear all,
The official latest CWM release for i9100 is v5.8.3.1 (see www.clockworkmod.com). Is there an official (or fully working version) of CWM 6.0.3.x for the i9100? For e.g. T-Mobile there is a release available. Can I use this as well?
for now, I can also flash Philz kernel to get CWM v6.0.3.2, but I first want to have a separate CWM version installed. Thanks for help.

I'm also trying to install/flash latest cwm without being part of any kernel / mod. Did you have any luck with that?
Philz IS stock kernel.....no tweaks, no mods......other than CWM and root.......afaik.....if you want a (cwm + root) stock phone, philz will give you that.......

I don't see why I should install a kernel, even stock, when only recovery partition needs changing. In most phones there are flashable files through adb, or similar ways, to install cwm. Will it work through rom manager app?
I'm not sure about just CWM on its own. It probably does exist. Just needed to jump in quick.... DO NOT use ROM manager on an i9100. Sure-fire way to screw things up /brick.
Ps. Keith is right, the only thing different about PhilZ kernel is recovery and it's rooted. Nothing else is changed.

You really are trying to make this as difficult as possible for yourself, aren't you ?
Take the good advice you've been given; particularly the bit about staying away from Rom Manager unless you want to find out why you don't use it with the SGS2 the hard way.
Will do that... however, I'll try to make a flashable zip (with stock recovery) of latest cwm alone, and will report back... just in case someone wants it in the future.

So I've read a bit lately on rooting my S2 and what not (as I decided to give it a go), and after flashing CWM Touch to my S2 I loved it and found it so much easier to install ZIP's and what not. However, on boot it disappeared, then to find that it was only a temporary Flash and when I rebooted the phone, it simply reverted back to the normal CWM.
Now before asking me to use Google or search for a thread, by god I did that. And after looking for almost 2 hours, I found nothing that gave me a definite answer whether it was possible or not. And so this is why I'm creating a thread.
So is it possible to flash CWM touch on my S2 permanently (like other phones have), or do I have to stick with the volume/power button edition.

The recovery, it's part of the kernel so which ever version of ClockworkMod the kernel shipped with that will always be there. If you really want touch recovery, you can flash Siyah Kernel and you'll be rooted and have its touch recovery.

Hmm I hoped that wasn't the case.
But isn't there a way to use ODIN3 to flash the kernel with a custom recovery, such as the CWM touch?
Sorry if that sounds stupid, I just am new to all this.
Not sure if you are allowed to bump this or not, but I just did.
Really want to know if it is possible to flash CWM touch on the kernal guys!

Why don't you just keep a touch cwm.zip file in your download folder and flash that after you flash a new rom?

And I do have the CWM touch zip in my internalSD but there isn't and point flashing it if everytime I reboot the phone and it goes back to the stock kernel.
I just want to know if there is a method possible to flash CWM touch into the kernel, and make it permanent, or at least fine a .tar version of it so I can flash it using odin
Once again I'll bump this.

Edited. Sorry, I re-read the thread. As already stated, you'll need to flash a kernel that has the version of recovery you want. If you want a different version of recovery with a specific kernel, you'll need to start making your own kernels.

Well I cannot find a .tar version of CWM touch so I guess I won't be able to flash the kernel.

It's in the kernel. Check out RedPill. It has touch recovery.

Why don't you just look at the kernels in the development section, specifically for one with touch recovery? You could have found all the available options and tried them out by now.
Or are you just being lazy?

No I'm not lazy, sorry if I came across that way. I am usually one to simply find something on my own, but for this I simply cannot.
I've looked and cannot find what I asked for in the OP, and am still looking and found nothing. So I simply asked a question to make sure that there isn't a possibility that it can be done.
Anyway it doesn't seem possible at the moment, so I guess I'll wait.
Before I go into flashing kernel I have a question to ask. Which kernel that is compatible to the att 4.0.4? Just want to make sure before I flash it through Odin Mobile Lite.

Your best bet is the Siyah kernel.

I have an i777 that absolutely refuses to allow CWM. I have tried Siyah kernel on both GB and ICS stock roms, as well as AJK kernel on JB stock from. I am far from giving up but this has caused me so much headache and I've never bricked a phone as much as I've done this. Needless to say, I've learned a lot but I have yet to figure it out. If anyone could offer some advice or things to try I certainly would appreciate it.
I am currently running stock 4.0.3 with Siyah 4.3.3 kernel.

Assuming your phone is in fully working condition, then there is evidently something you are missing in your understanding of how the phone works. The SGH-I777 is different in that the recovery is built in to the kernel, and *not* installed separately in it's own partition. From reading the above, I'm wondering if your are trying to install a separate recovery, or if you art trying to install ClockworkMod from the play store by installing Rom Manager?
To help you get through this, I need to know exactly what you are doing that is not working for you, in a step by step explanation.

The phone is pretty old, and not many people hang out here any more. I still check in every once in a while. You would get more attention in any forum if you post a new thread with your question, rather than necro-ing an old thread.

I assume you meant to type "Rom" manager? Rom manager should not be used on the I777. For reference, see the very top sticky thread in the Q&A forum (this forum) [A] Rom Manager ******WARNING READ THIS BEFORE******

All custom kernels built for the I777 come with a recovery either based on CWM recovery or TWRP recovery. These kernels are usually compatible with the stock system which matches their version number. Once you install the custom kernel to replace the stock kernel, you will be able to enter recovery and it will be CWM (or TWRP in a few cases).
For Gingerbread, you can do this without rooting the device, since there is a Siyah kernel for Gingerbread that is available in tar format that can be flashed with Odin. To do this, flash the I777UCKH7 full distribution, which you can download from the Download Repository (see the link in my signature), then flash the tar version of Siyah 2.6.14 Kernel. Flash each one in PDA. Without ticking Re-Partitioning. You will now be able to boot into recovery and you will have CWM recovery where you can flash many types of custom firmware.
Another route you could take is to flash the I777UCMD8 full distribution from the Download Repository, then use the Framaroot app with the Aragorn exploit to root the device, and then use Mobile Odin Pro, or Mobile Odin lite to flash the AJK v4.9 NoSwap kernel which is compatible with the stock system. If you need additional instructions on how to do that, just ask.

first, if i rooted my i9300 with cf auto root, can i still add cwm to my phone afterwards? second, where is the latest version of cwm for the i9300, because when i search i keep getting the verizon one? third, what is the difference between cwm touch, cwm recovery and others...?
Flash via odin or mobile odin.
Cwm is in the dev section but recommend you try philz instead. Based on cwm but better

Philz is a recovery so it can be used to flash any flashable zip files, just like CWM can.
What makes it better? Better touch responsiveness, more options, better support directly from developer.

i'm a bit new at this, and the philz page looks extremely confusing. i don't know why they put so much crap on one page, instead of organizing it into different sections? if you are not a programmer it looks like a lot of scribbling to us. so how do i know EXACTLY where the dl link is for my i9300 international? My biggest concern is always getting the wrong version and bricking my phone. so especially with something new to me, i want to be extra careful.

Downloads are in post 2. There are only 2 downloads. i9300 and i9305. Its not really that difficult to get the right one.
Apologies for the desperate newbie question, but here goes--
I have followed the instructions in the stickied tutorials or tried to follow them so far. I rooted my SGH-i777 using framaroot. No problem there.
I got Mobile ODIN and the latest siyah CWM. I flashed the kernel.
When I try to power on I get stuck at "SAMSUNG" and then phone appears to power off.
I can get into recovery mode using vol up, vol down and power. I see the Siyah screen, etc. But that's as far as I can go.
HELP!

I had actually factory reset my SGH-i777 before rooting and flashing so I was running the Touchwiz that comes stock with the SGH-i777.
Any steps I can take to get out from under this rock? :crying:

Yes. Not to worry.
It sounds like the system is incompatible with the kernel. You didn't say which version of the OS you were running before you installed the kernel. Do you remember what it was? Which stock comes with the phone would depend on how old the phone is.
How to proceed depends on what you want to do. If you want to install custom firmware, then I would suggest that you flash one of the stock plus root packages with Odin, and then use Mobile Odin lite or Mobile Odin pro to install the correct custom kernel, meaning one that is compatible with the system that you chose.

Ultimately I'd like to end up with CM10.1, but obviously that's a secondary concern at this point to a working phone

It doesn't hurt to do some looking.
Use Odin v1.85 for the flashing (google it).
Then find a kernel for your phone (don't try Siyah again :b), like for example, Entrophy's kernel, and flash the zimage file using mobile odin.

OK. The AJK v3.0 NoSwap kernel is the only kernel compatible with stock AT&T JB 4.1.2. However, unless you can get it onto your sd card, it won't do you any good at this point.
So I would suggest you flash UCLL6 stock plus root which is 4.0.4 from here. The OP has the complete guide, and links to working custom kernels. Once you get it up and going with a custom kernel, you can then flash CM 10.1, or anything else you want.
Edit: Cooked v1.6 as suggested by azeem40 is not Odin flashable. It is a CWM flashable zip, so you would have the same issue getting it onto your sd card. The above is your quickest route.

Let me start off by saying that I am not one of those who directly ask questions before reading. Honestly, I have been reading from guide to guide and it is because of the many guides on the forum and Google that I have become confused on where to start.
I have rooted and flashed ROMs + kernels on my old phone, so I know most of how it works, but its the first time I use a Samsung phone, so I would really love some help to get started.
All in all, I have only few questions, but important ones I would love to be covered. Better safe than sorry, right?
Let's get started:
I am currently running stock JB - to get root I shall just flash CF-Root, or is anything else recommended?
Once rooted, is there any recovery I shall use that is more "stable" than any other? CWM, CWM Touch, TWRP etc.? Lets say I want to try NeatROM + Apolo kernel, will that require any specific recovery?
If I want to try different ROMs out, like to go from NeatROM to SlimBean to CM11, can I do all that by using the same recovery? I know about the full wipes, I just want to make sure I can flash other ROMs straight away or if I need to change things before?
That is all for now. Once this is covered up, I highly believe I can take care of myself in this huge community and to help others too once I get a little experienced

Hmm,as all your questions are somehow recovery/kernel related,you may try flashing Philz kernel.It's basically a stock kernel+advanced cwm recovery.You'll get root too.Its cwm can flash all roms up to android 4.3.1.I would call this option a safe and easy bet.
Also,if you want to try kitkat roms,like cm11,you'll have to update to kitkat compatible recovery,like cwm 6.0.4.7 etc,first.

Look at your rom's build number and choose accordingly.To check,go to settings/about device.
Use this kernel only for stock/stock based JB or ICS,as it has older,kitkat incompatible, CWM.
To flash 4.4.x roms,you can do it by following these simple steps:
1.Download a 6.0.4.x or newer CWM for i9100.
2.Boot to Philz recovery.Do a nandroid backup.
3.Flash new CWM.
4.Reboot recovery.
5.Full wipe,then flash chosed kitkat rom+gapps.
6.Reboot and enjoy!!

With the CWM 6.0.3.2,which is latest in Philz kernel,you can flash all Jelly Bean roms(4.1.x to 4.3.1).This includes both stock samsung 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and custom JB roms,like AOSP(that SlimSaber 4.3.1 is),CM,AOKP and so on...Just no KitKat love.
Don't forget to do a nandroid backup and EFS(this is vital) backup in recovery before you start. Just in case you know.
