My thoughts on new update. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I just got the new update an hour ago and wanted to share my thoughts because I know there's still a lot of people wondering what it fixes. So far I've noticed:
- Phone in general feels much much quicker.
- gallery no longer lags.
- switching from wifi to 4g no longer lags the phone
- camera is improved. Still slight shutter delay but I'm thinking it must jus be how it works since it's taking such high quality pics.
-updating apps in the play store no longer makes the phone lag.
-one of my favorite things is the home button response speed is really fast now(yes svoice home button is disabled) I noticed the home button used to lag sometimes. Much faster now.
- I noticed some buttons in the camera and gallery are different and have some extras. Haven't had much of a look yet.
-it appears all my apps are on the SD card now.
I can't comment on battery life or anything else yet but I'll keep an eye on it tonight.

That sounds pretty good to me
Skinny

Everything is still working perfect. I've tried hard to make the phone lag/stutter and I can't. I've been using it non stop since the update and not a single stutter yet. Very impressed.

Cool. Thanks for the info.

So, I also installed the update, and moved some apps to the SD card... HOWEVER it appears that they are going to the emulated SD card, and not the real extStorages SD card.... how is this helpful???

I hope they release a change log and confirm some of what you said

Great review

The only thing with moving certain apps to the external SD card, if that app has a widget the widget is no longer available in the widgets folder. Otherwise the phone is smooth.

This update is only via kies? Or are they pushing it out ota? There's been some comments that they not only does the new update remove root, but it also adds software to prevent future root attempts. I assume if it's ota it will prompt you for the update and not just auto install.

So far it looks like only kies.

Also some things to add.
- support for transparent notification bar on all wallpapers
- text legibility enhancer in display settings.(text looks better but not sure how it affects battery)
- smart pause toggle in notifications
- standby battery life is improved
- 2 wallpapers added. 1 removed.
- improved hd audio for calls
- headphone improvements
- phone is staying cooler overall
- security fixes
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app

I finally figured it out how to enable the transparent notification bar, I'm using NOVA launcher and had to enable it in under nova settings.

Its almost like you guys work for Verizon! Telling everyone to lose root and upgrade immediately. For two days now! Randy and Chadly in every thread about the new update.... So suspicious. Apps 2 sd is nice. Especially aince spotify automatically puts all downloaded data to your external by default. That saves 4gbs of internal space for me. But thats pretty minor considering...

4.4 KitKat officially confirmed!

The 4.4 update has been confirmed by Morten Aagaard, manager for LG Denmark at a summit in Copenhagen!
Source (in Danish). Translation goes as follows:
"We're bringing an update plan for LG G2 for Android 4.4 KitKat by the end of the year or the start of the next year. But of course there will be an update for G2"
This is great news, guys! That French carrier "report" (which was slightly shady at best) was actually telling the truth!
How does that make you guys feel?
Did we ever doubt that it would get kitkat? We dont need confirmation to know this
And in my opinion the date doesnt matter unless its like supersoon to be excited about or superlate to be dissapointed, but this was expected.

I absolutely love what LG has done with Android. It's fast, customizable, beautiful and very, very stable. Not a single crash, and I've been using the phone a lot for six days now. However, transparency for 3rd party launchers and ability to hide the navigation bar would be cool. Otherwise I have no complaints. Best non-AOSP experience for me.
LG has impressed me so far, with the only problem being some of the performance problems (probably due to LG choosing a conservative scheduler and the aggressive throttling). This is with no doubt the best phone I've had. Samsung can go into a corner and adore their blue-screen-tech.
Nice nice, looking forward to it!
Well it's not very common for mfg's to skip an android iteration entirely. They usually roll them out incrementally. So yes, color me surprised they are jumping 4.3 and going straight to 4.4.
However, we should probably have some 4.4 lovin' before that in the form of some aosp rom.
Sent from my LG-D800 using xda app-developers app
actually i think we really do need an update, but it doesn't have to be 4.4 or whatever. we just need some issues to be fixed or removed in some places like low camera performance at low light in the camera, some stutterings and lags which are preventing the smoothness of the UI and etc. Unless lg get these done, i don't even care if they give android 5 or 6.
I come from TouchWiz so I don't understand what's all the gripe about. Samsung enabled notification bar toggle removal with 4.3 (not sooner) and LG's UI allows me to tweak and add and customize pretty much everything I want.
Case in point: when I plug in my headset, I can edit the apps in the bottom mini-drawer instead of using the preset.
All I'm waiting for from 4.4 are TRIM and ART.

And OpenGL ES 3.0 (from 4.3 but still new on G2)!
Contrary to popular belief, it's not all that uncommon for companies to skip updates. I had the Sony Ericsson xperia x10 which was updated straight from eclair to gingerbread, skipping froyo. It happens, and excitedly believable in this case simply because the phone was launched behind an update. I expect that lg will go through 4.3 and straight to 4.4.

[Discuss] AOSP ROMs vs G2 special features.

LG G2 has many special features integrated in the stock ROM or in the hardware. How many of them can be ported / used, or ALREADY BE USED in AOSP roms?
Here's what I am interested in, you can add more:
[*]System-integrated knock off -- double tap on status bar or double tap on desktop without any widgets
[*]Screen memory to buffer contents which improves battery life
[*]IR-remote feature
Update:
Pop up feature described in #11 and #12.
Screen memory to buffer contents may not be used in AOSP roms, as described in #13, and I have similar feeling.
#4 APT-X for bluetooth connection.
#5 & #8 confirm that IR works.
#8 also mentioned there are more ways about knock off.
Knock off can be done with gestures.

IR Blaster works. Gummy has ported adding multiple nav keys, one of which is to turn off the screen.
You can also install the LG camera apk since the AOSP one is absolute garbage. Overall, this is one of the best close to AOSP ROMs I've run, and without Nova to boot!

I second this!
I love what the devs do, but I really am worried that some of the better G2 features will get left behind because the devs don't feel they are important enough to warrant any extra effort.
Namely, the sounds hardware in the G2 is phenomenal. I have a lot of 24/96 and higher material and listen on headphones. I have seen nothing from AOSP stating that they have ported the driver from the source that Wolfson or LG provide, so...

This is a deal breaker for me. I just tried almost all ROM's and revert back to stock cause of this pop up feature.
I tried call pop up app from Play store but it is not handy and have some issues.
I feel like the screen buffer memory/GRAM isn't being utilised in any of the AOSP ROMS.
I say this because I've noticed that even though there is less boat taking up the battery; it is still less than what I got out of the stock ROM. And if you see the battery drained due to screen usage on a AOSP ROM, it is almost always above 50 %. On the stock LG ROM it was never above 40-45 %. As far as I know, this has reduced the screen-on time by almost 1 and a half hours.
It'd be great if a developer could chime in since I could be just talking out of my ass.

Actually during the days when I used Stock rom, the screen was never #1 in the battery consumption list. For about 30 hours on battery and nearly 3 hours SOT, the screen just took 20% to 30% of total battery consumption, which ranked #2 or #3 in the list; and Android System, which contains a lot of LG services, was always the No.1.
When I switched to @[vertigo] 's CM11 alpha build 2, with almost the same usage pattern, the screen started to take about 40% of total battery consumption -- always #1 in the list.
That's why I am curious about the screen buffer. My usage pattern should be the typical one that benefits from the screen buffer -- reading feeds, browsing social network via apps, chat with friends in IM apps via text -- and no gaming.

Nice video! Glad to see that we can get the remote control app working.
Currently using unofficial CM11, and the message app is way better than stock LG's.
In the LG rom, if one wants to choose multiple receivers of text message from contacts in the message app, the popup contact list will not exclude the contacts without phone number -- the "show contacts with phone number only" option in the contact app doesn't take effect here. And same with Samsung i9500's ROM as my friend confirmed, and same with the Samsung i9000 ROM back to the Android 2.2 era!!!
BTW, which 4.4 rom are you using? CM11 or PA4.0? Does it have Google Now quick launch ring?

Let's run through the list.
4K Video Recording: Needs a physical component to match, so no.
TimeShift Video: Also requires something physical.
Glove Mode: I suppose this means that it'll work with gloves or something? I've never had a problem with the Z Ultra responding to me with gloves on
Smart Backlight Control: This we could get, and it would be interesting. Probably a battery drain.
Double Tap to Wake: I'm curious how they do this; My guess is that they don't turn the touch screen off even when the screen is off... which we could emulate, but that's a battery drain too.
Built-in Answering Machine: Yeah, we could get that. I'm not entirely sure why one would want that, but we could get it.
Launcher Choice: We can easily get this.
Audio Accessories Functionality: This seriously just sounds like they're going to update their Smart Connect app to handle this stuff.
USB DAC: Definately needs a hardware component.
Notification Dropdown Customization: Wait, we can't do that yet?
Default SMS App: Again, we couldn't do that before? We totally SHOULD get that.
Printing: Should be getting that.
What's New: It's an app and looks like their replacement of Google Now... If they do it right, could work. We'll probably get it.
White Icons/Transparent Nav Bar: I could have sworn the thing already did this, but regardless, that's probably comming in the 4.4 update.
Close All Apps: That'll be added for sure.
The things to be most excited about propbably all require some hardware component, while the things that are expected with the 4.4 update will come easily.

Glove Mode: Yes, this is so we can use it with gloves on, but the Ultra doesn't have issues with (thin) gloves, so meh..
Smart Backlight Control: This is a software feature, so we could easily get it.
Double Tap to Wake: It'll work on the Ultra, but i'm not sure how it works.
Notification Dropdown Customization: We'll get the Quick Toggles like in AOSP (but skinned), so that's probably what they mean.
Default SMS App: Yes, we can do this today, but KitKat introduced its own API to handle this, so it's officially a native feature, which isn't the case on older firmwares. It's a stock 4.4 feature, and that's pretty much it.
Printing: This is also a stock 4.4 feature, so we'll get it.
What's New: 100% software, so we'll probably get it. This is bloat in my eyes though, so i'll remove it.
White Icons/Transparent Nav Bar: 4.4 introduced transparent statusbar and navbar, so it's required to have white statusbar icons so the statusbar icons doesn't clash with the rest of the UI. It's a requirement from Google.

Neeh, it's not like we don't know what 4.4 introduces, so it's fairly accurate to say that it won't bring anything "new" to the table
What I already know is that I'll remove quite a lot of unnecessary features that I'm not going to use. That I can tell you
Sent from my C6806_GPe using Tapatalk
I've heard a lot of people complaining that Sony is going the "Samsung way", adding more and more layers to an up-until-now almost-vanilla stock Sony rom.
I don't think that at all. Almost everyone of those updates adds something new that could be useful but most likely will not choke the processor or use the whole 2GB of Ram memory.
The most useful feature I see is the knock on one, because it actually is a pain in the arse to get to that micro button, especially with a cover/bumper on.
Adjustable white balance could be good, but I don't personally need it. I don't care about gloves, nor I care about the smart backlight: never used on Sammy, will never use it on Sony.
Answering machine? No way, I hate those things.
We will for sure get printing options (not that I print the that much from my phone), audio accessories functionality (depending on how they'll develop them, this could be useful) notification dropdown customization (I have mixed feelings about this, but I could get used to the AOSP notification system) what's new (more like who cares) white icons and transparent status bar (although now everything is customizable through themes) and close all apps (a thing you can get right now, even if you're not rooted or unlocked. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=49517494, install, reboot, get the "close all" button. It is a Sony app after all.).
The only features we definitely won't have will be 4K recording and timeshift video, but anyone with a Ultra most likely won't care about camera features in the first place.
P. S. The knock on feature can be enabled in several devices with a specific kernel, so the battery drain isn't that much, and by the way, the S800 processor is the same used by LG G2.

Root first, then use something like Titanium to freeze the What's New app.
Some system apps are allowed to be disabled in System > Apps > All. What's New is not disable-able.
Is it possible to unroot it right after amd keep the what's new disabled? I've rooted my gs4 before and since I'm not an expert, I had issues. So now I'm just afraid of rooting again.

Reason: For getting root, you need to unlock the bootloader; no big deal, Sony even supports you doing so.
But while unlocking the bootloader, you'll permanently lose all DRM keys and "X-Reality".
Too much trouble regarding the purpose if you'd ask me...
Don't get me wrong: Root is always a good idea, for me it's a MUST.
But maybe you better wait till a rooting method comes up which won't kill your keys.

So much hassle. I partially understood what you said. But when it comes to movies and things, how well is this screen. (I'm still trying to figure which to buy, z2 or galaxy tab pro 8.4.) my ideal tab would be the 8.4 but it doesn't come with 32gb. But it has a beautiful screen which I prefer. Even the size is perfect for me.

Display quality is excellent, high contrasts, deep blacks, no stuck pixels, almost no light bleeding, FAR better than the Samsung screens I saw the last months (e. g. Note 10.1 2014).
BUT (nothing without a big but): Tearing problems while scrolling (gets corrected with firmware 2.55), slightly worse display quality of text elements if holding the Z2 in portrait orientation.
The lower resolution compared with other tablets of today is no dealbreaker; you WILL notice that gear like the Note 10.1 2014 displays text a tiny bit better - you'll notice that if you've got the chance to do a side-by-side comparison. Seems to be a bad antialiasing algorithm utilized with the Z2.
Regarding videos: Movies look slightly better on the Z2, thanks to the better contrast ratio, the deeper black and the "X-Reality" feature. Yes, it really works. Not with every video, but in most cases this feature performs just fine.

No, it isn't.
It's just that the Note 10.1 has a higher resolution, period.
Aside from that: Do you also have a job or other hobbies? Seems you use all your time to write long reviews and forum postings about the Tablet Z2... comes across as a bit manic...
Hasenbein: Any reason for you obviously trying to insult me ?
If you're really interested in my profession (you've seen my works on TV), I'll happily answer your questions if you send me a private mail.
Regarding the antialiasing issue: Youl'll notice the feature working better in landscape mode. This suggests the algorithms needing further optimization. I am pretty aware of the resolution differences of Z2 and Note 10.1 2014 as I own both devices.
No. The portrait vs. landscape "issue" is a property of the screen.
The portrait mode has optimum sharpness only in one direction!
That is: If you are in landscape, you can turn the tablet LEFT or RIGHT to go into portrait mode.
With my tablet, the optimum sharpness is when I turn it so that the power button is pointing up. On my tablet Z it was when I was turning the power button down (which wasn't optimal). Could be that the "right" direction is even different on every individual device...
This is with any LCD screen (try to turn your desktop monitor into portrait mode, then you'll see ); on the tablets with even higher resolution, it's only less visible (or even not visible at all for normal people).
I know.
But I didn't refer to sharpness overall, I noticed slightly worse antialising if viewing text contents in portrait mode: No visible "edges" in landscape orientation, but slightly visible edges in portrait mode. Strangely enough, this effect does not always occur; sometimes it's there, sometimes not.
That makes me believe there's some optimization potential.

Is it possible to unroot it right after and keep the "what's new" disabled? I've rooted my gs4 before and since I'm not an expert, I had issues. So now I'm just afraid of rooting again.

Yes, it's possible, but I don't see how root would cause you issues unless you either had security issues with misbehaving apps or went wrong somewhere in the process of rooting, in which case it isn't the fault of being rooted.
Currently though, the only root method for the Z2 Tablet requires unlocking your bootloader and flashing a custom kernel. This may or may not incur irreversible undesired changes to your system depending on your approach.

Lag And Keyboard Lag!

I have the Samsung S6 Edge t-mobile 64gb sapphire and it's been 11 days already . I'm starting to notice some hiccups and lags , between switching apps, tabs and keyboard input lags. It's pretty annoying.
Restart phone..
been doing that since the lag. it's seems there is some underlying culprit. lol. I really don't know...kinda sucks for a brand new expensive smartphone.

turn off internet and wifi..if its better theres an app that want always net...also facebook is very ram hungry...look for such apps...if not find reset the phone...most times its ok after that...
Having same issue. I'm using clean master app and helps. Not sure if that app is good or not. Hangouts lags to open when I get a notification. Can a theme cause this?
It Does LAG!
Your not alone! i experience lag a lot and its annoying considering i payed $1000 for a phone that lags! i do hope there is an update otherwise i will have to go back to iPhone 6 Plus or maybe even wait for 6s Plus!!
I know right?.... I just hate it when the keyboard lags like hell.... been closing applications everytime....so that it will minimize the lag occurrence. kinda sucks.

Everyone with lags...just reflash stock firmware using Kies or smartswitch. My S6 Edge lagged initially. I'm rooted. I'm using the ZiDroid stock recovery. I had wrongly deleted knox files with root explorer making my phone unbootable. I followed the directions of using the kies method *before smartswitch* method and the full on firmware restore killed any lags I initially had. BTW, the Kies method had the OTA update built in.
I'm running stock. not rooted. But with lags.
I agree, I bought the phone because there are so many positive review saying there's literally no lag at all..which is not true
This is TW, and it's TW we all knew, it remind me of my note ii, at least before I flashed it with omniRom
it's lag free initially when no app installed, but after few days of use, stutter just become more obvious
I know i can solve it with phone restart or even factory reset, but that's not how 2015 smart phone should behave, nor justifiable with the price
The TW animation just plane bad compare to stock lollipop, and the stutter just pop out here and there
I'm more than happy to give up all samsung feature in exchange of pure lollipop experience, but unfortunately it's not available yet

May i ask is there a tutorial or youtube link that shows how to reflash stock firmware using Kies or smartswitch?
I may give it a try to refresh my firmware to see if it helps or not
for now, the scroll lag in chrome/play store, delay in pulling down notification and occasional keyboard stutter really annoys me like hell
I have no lag per say the only problems I have is keyboard lag every now and again and redraws. I switched to Nova launcher and get much less redraws. I think that somehow the problem has more to do with lollipop than touchwiz because I had no lag at all on my note 4, until lollipop.
Coming from an HTC One M8 - My phone at times seems slower that this.
Albeit, I do use S Health, Fit bit and some other ram hunger items i guess.
Even when I clean the ram - I still only have less than 10% free!
After having a Note 3 i thougt stepping up to a Note 4 would improve in speed, it didnt, tw was extremely sluggish, lag was laughable with The killerspecs of The Note 4. Flashed a AOSP on my Note 3, fluid as hell! So i sold my new note 4 (0x0 knox), glad i got rid of it!!
Im never gonna buy a Sammy AGAIN, so AGAIN killer specs of The s6 and still lag, its junk!
TW, bloatware, stupid gimmicks are still the big problem!
Be smart, dont go for gimmicks that at first look good, but in reality you never use them..
Buy a Nexus 6, flash a Nice ROM, some mods, decent kernel, enjoy your fluid device!!
(Nexus 6 without contract 450 euro here, half The amount of a 899 s6 edge)
After downloading and installing the google keyboard from the play store, all keyboard lag I had experienced is gone. I think it has to be something with the preloaded keyboard(s) on the system because as soon as I disabled the other two keyboards (samsung and swipe) that were preinstalled and installed the google keyboard, no more lag.

install the google one and wait for the, 5.1.1 update
After root and installing a custom ROM I have not had one bit of stutter.
The only app that occasionally lags is Fleksy, a third party keyboard
Im with google keyboard and it lags terribly, to the point that I need to wait 2-3 seconds between chararcters!!! I had S1, nexus 4, nexus 5 and this device is simply amazingly bad. keyboard lag on a 2015 flagship??? unbelievable. Never going to buy samsung again. After 3 beautiful years with the nexuses, Im considering flashing roms again. sad.
BTW, keyboards legs are not the only legs. I have wallpaper scrolling issues, switching apps issues and so on. Does anybody know if there's a tutorial out there to stop all bloatware and manage memory? Might be better trying to control whats running before starting to flash roms.

I'm running stock, removed briefing, deleted some of the pre op installed apps and the only lag I find is the keyboard now and then. Irritating nevertheless.
Turning off vibrate on keypresses seems to help a lot.
