[Q] Google Edition - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I have been using the Google Edition ROM on my Galaxy S4 and I'm loving it. The only thing is everytime there is an update to the ROM and i install it it wipes all my data and i have to start over. Is there are way to "update" the ROM compared to a clean install?

Just install the zip over your current Google Edition installation then wipe dalvik/cache. Non-major upgrades do not need full data wipes normally. If you have issues with the installation then do a clean install.

I just tried this and it still wiped everything. Is there a chance the zip has something in it for a clean install?

What recovery are you using? And are you sure that you are not selecting "wipe data" anywhere? Try booting into your recovery, then going to "install zip". Once the zip has been installed, then wipe cache/dalvik only. Should be under advanced.

My buddy put "Team Win Recovery Project v2.5.0.2" on my phone. I go in: select install, select the zip. After it installs It gives me the option to wipe cache/dalvik then reboots the phone. and go into the phone setup wizard.

FYI:
the updater script in my ROMs is written to wipe everything but your SDCard and /data/media/
Did it this way to avoid any potential issues from people "upgrading" then making a bug report that really isn't a bug report at all. Until the ROM is all fixed and stable, I won't be removing that portion of the updater script.
Your options to not wipe:
unzip, delete the wipedata.sh script, rezip
By not wiping you potentially carry over any left over garbage that was no good in your previous install
Your options to wipe and still get your stuff back up and going immediately:
create an update.zip with your apps and app data before flashing
backup your apps using romtoolbox, carbon, or tibu
And just ask this in my thread next time. I won't bite and I generally don't look in here for support questions :good:

You should send me a handful of fresh unused SIM cards
Would save me the trouble of going to the store when I kill one testing builds that mess with the RIL settings. lol :silly:

i just got a couple hundred in, i think i can spare 20 lol also while im getting this ROM going on my phone. I live in a dead zone and i use a network extender. Ive notice in all the ROMs ive used for my phone does support it. There is no data support so it so picture messaging and Group MMS dont work. Do you have ideas on that?

I've never used an extender. Do you get voice service or is it full dead zone where you live? That's rough though. And you said all ROMs act this way or just Google edition?
MMS needs 3g in order to send (it's always pissed me off that you can't send with WiFi)
Does data and mms work everywhere else?

I live in a complete dead zone. Thats why i got an extender. I can do voice and text but anything revolving data does not work. Ive tried a lot of different ROMs before yours trying to find the most stock google one. It just tells me im roaming, If someone sends me a pic message or Group MMs it will say downloading and will sit until the next day im at work in service and then it will download. Same with me send a pic message. Its not a big deal i was just wondering if it was just the rom or if its an issue with me phone.

Give this one a shot

I just posted it in my other thread also. It's a test build I was working on to remove CSC. It may or may not help. I'll look to see if I can find a setting sourdough's to sending mms in poor reception.

[Q] Verizon OTA update from Nov. 2011

My Thunderbolt received an OTA update last week and keeps rebooting. I have ClockworkMod Recovery so the Install fails. I cleared the Cache with CWM and restarted the phone like it suggests in other posts elsewhere. I get a failed update message, I cancel out of it and reboot the phone. I also used Titanium Backup to Freeze "Update" and "Updater", but the phone keeps self booting into the OTA update every day . I searched for an update.zip and cannot find one on the SD card.
Can anyone suggest how to stop the phone from updating/rebooting everyday? I cannot seems to find the answer anywhere.
Thanks and I wish everyone a safe holiday!
DD
Just to confirm, are you rooted but on the stock rom? If so, you should be able to find some threads to go on from searching, but here are a couple where people got the update install while rooted:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330325
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1324682
Sorry I forgot to mention it
Yes, I'm rooted, I'll check out the links.
more than likely you wont have an update.zip but rather an RUU. Remove the RUU from the SD card and see how that works. If I was having this problem I would do a full wipe on the phone backup my full SD card contents and format the SD card and flash a custom rom with CWM. I never understand what the point of rooting is if you are not going to flash a custom rom. Are you afraid? Worried about bricking? I just don't get it. Put the new MIUI on it. You will be pleased.
I installed Liquid ROM 3.1 and it's working like a charm. I was concerned about the 3G/4G compatability problems that most custom ROMS seem to have.
Using Titanium Backup Pro I backed up all my apps then restored them after installing Liquid ROM and re-setup the desktop and all is well.

Really? The ability to fix things like security holes, use ad filters, make complete, easily restorable backups, install a certificate for a private CA, or just have fairly complete control over hardware you've purchased isn't enough?

I was actually broken hearted that I was compelled in install a custom rom to avoid the problems the op has described. Everything "works" in standard rom. When you go custom you get lots of fun new features but you always lose something..... Could be vzw vvm or nfl live or fast gps lock or photo effects in gallery but it seems there is always someting you lose.

[Q] Advice on a soft brick.

It's a random softbrick, no changes have been made for months, so I've not backed up for ages, I want to svae contacts and messages and app data.
Will odin wipe data, can it be repaired with CWM no wipe flash?
Long version.
I've been using ICS for 4 months.
I did a wipe and fresh install on the release of the official GB ICS.
I then used clockwork mod to changle toggles and clock, then triangle away.
Things were ok until a month ago when I hit the App to SD memory bug, which was fixed be removing apps back to internal.
Again been fine for about a month.
Then today, random lock on "Samsung Galaxy s II gt-9100" screen.
No changes have been made for ages, the only change was adding on{x} today.
Whats the best way to try and get this fixed? I want to save as much data as I can, I've not backed up for a few months, as I wasn't ,making any changes.
Should I just Just use odin and see what happens, or is there a better way, even if it is longer?
Can I put a no wipe flash on my SD and use CWM to try and repair? Is this a more complicated risk move? if so whats the risk.
I'd really like to keep as much as I can 'cos I've got the perfect setup for me (besides the boot lock...)
THanks folks.

Yeah, thanks for the help anyway.
I didn't know if using CWM to flash a different rom would work.
I was hoping a no wipe rom would fix the error was and keep my apps and data.
It didn't.
I used odin to flash a base > then CWM > then resurection.
I've lost loads of data :-(
But my phones sweet
lol, you win some and you loose some.
I really should know better, as a sys admin I bollock folks all the time for not doing backups. luckily I backed up messages recently, so should also have contacs there. Just all my save games, app data, is gone
THanks

Visual Voice Mail on ViperDNA 1.3.0

Is anyone having issues with VZW's VVM while running ViperDNA 1.3.0? There is no VVM tab in my messaging app, but there is a icon for it in the app drawer. I tried to re-installed it from the Play Store, and keep getting an error message saying that it's not needed because I have built in VVM. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get it to work?
Or, if anyone knows of another VVM service that will allow me to export the message as an mp3 file, I'm open to suggestions.

I use VVM on Viper 1.3. It shows up on the messaging tab for me. I would probably try to dirty flash the ROM. Remember when you are in aroma, apps with checkmarks means you do not want them installed.

Would you mind telling ne how to dirty flash it? Would that erase everything that I already have? Also, how do I get to aroma? I'm sorry for the questions, but I've never flashed ROMs before, and am unsure of what to do.

Boot into recovery, make a backup just in case. Wipe cache and dalvic cache only. Install the ROM (without wiping system). Be meticulous when you're selecting apps to keep/delete. You will still have your apps and data once the install is complete and you reboot.

[Q] First time installing custom ROM on S4 - Thoughts & Questions

Hi all,
This is the first time I've tried installing a custom ROM on my VZW S4 (i545) (MDK firmware. Yes, I held out on the OTA since May). I've got a few thoughts and a couple of questions I was hoping could be addressed. I consider myself familiar with flashing ROM's and whatnot, so I won't need hand-holding steps in answer to my questions.
Some info:
VZW S4
MDK Firmware
Recovery: OUDhs CWM Touch Req0very v1.0.3.5
I haven't taken any OTA since I got the phone back in May. This leads me to believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that I'm on Android 4.2.2?
Current ROM: AOKP Nightly Build for 10/31/2013 (MR2)
Thoughts: Holy hell, this ROM is BLAZING fast. I am missing a few features, but none I use regularly (I don't use any of the TouchWiz "smart" features. Damn battery hogs). I was able to flash this over and install GAPPS without any problems. Loading time is incredible, and I love how clean the interface is.
Questions:
Can anyone help me figure out why I cannot install CM10.2? Not sure if that's because I downloaded the wrong version or something, but after flashing it, the screen stays stuck at the Galaxy S4 logo and doesn't move. Maybe I didn't wait long enough, but it surely didn't move in any reasonably expected time (AOKP, by comparison, loaded probably <1 minute). Any thoughts on why this might be? I really want to try CM10.2, so perhaps I should try a different build?
Another question/concern: I downloaded a few different ROMs last night -- CM10.2, AOKP and st0ckdr0id. AOKP installed fine, CM10.2 froze up, but when I installed st0ckdr0id (after wiping out, of course), I got what I think is referred to as a kernel panic. The message was similar to "This phone has software installed on it that Verizon Wireless has determined to be unsafe. Please power off the phone and take to the nearest Verizon Wireless store for help". In the top-left corner, it had in bold RED letters "Kernel secure: FAIL" (or similar wording). I fixed this by booting back into recovery, wiping out, and then installing AOKP again. Can anyone help me understand why this happened?
Why is only ~10GB of space still available when I -thought- I wiped out everything?
What I'm really searching for is an AOSP ROM that is very clean and light, but has SOME of the TouchWiz features. Any recommendations?
My phone only shows me as having a 3G connection, where normally I have 4G LTE. Anything I can do to fix this? Is this an issue with the ROM not detecting the right kind of radio? Bug report, perhaps?
I can't mount my external_sd in my CWM anymore. Yes, I used to be able to do it at one point, because I've done an external nandroid backup to it from within CWM in the past (as of October 29th, if the date on the backups is correct). I've read in other Google searches that it has something to do with the formatting of the SD card, but I haven't removed that SD card from my phone in a few months to have adjusted anything to do with formatting. I plugged the memory card into my Linux laptop this morning while diagnosing this and got an error about an unknown exfat partition. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Stupid question: Is there a way to -completely- wipe my internal SD card clean of all my current files? I know when I "wipe" /data I can still see all of my files from the previous installation, and I'm not ballsy enough to wipe /sdcard. I guess the question that then coincides with this is if I were able to completely wipe the phone, I assume that would wipe the recovery as well?
Sorry for some of the novice questions -- I have no problem messing with my old TF300T tablet (because NVFlash will save the day), but this is my only phone, only line of communication and SOLE way for me to answer calls for work (24/7 rotating on-call), so it is VERY important to me to ask questions and not go down for more than 1 hour.
Thanks for all help guys, its much appreciated. I hope to be able to test ROMs regularly and maybe start posting video reviews or something, who knows?
Thanks,
Opethfan89

Wow that's a lot. Let's see if we can get you answers.
1. Switch recoveries to twrp 2.5.0.2. I can't stress the importance of the particular version enough. There are others. This is absolutely the most stable. It's what the devs use. I think then your cm issue will be resolved.
Correct way to wipe with twrp.
1.wipe - >factory reset.
2. Advanced wipe - >check system, data, davlik, cache then wipe.
3. The go back to main screen and install rom.
2. Answered by answer one. Lots of people have lots of opinions about the various recoveries. All I can tell you is this is what all the devs use for their recovery. Can't argue with that.
3. Reserved space. It might say you have 16 gigs but a good size chunk is taking merely by formatting. Then the ROM and programs you have installed of course.
4. Honestly they are all freaking great. The aosp roms. You do the answer to number one and you can find out. DU is my fav @ this moment. Followed by beanstalk.
5. Go to mobile networks make sure your network mode is set to cdma +lte/evdo.
6. Answer 1.
7. You don't really want to wipe the entire internal SD card. Sounds good when you think it might screw you if you did it.

Thanks for your response Mightycaptain! I used CWM as my first ever recovery and am kinda pressed on it, which is why I use it, but I have no issues going to TWRP if that means fixing my issues. Can you elaborate on how to install TWRP in place of my current CWM? I'll do some Googling in the meantime to try to find the answer myself. (I haven't done any flashing or rooting stuff since I got the phone in May!!)
Thanks for your answer in #5. Fixed the issue I was having.
My reason for wanting to wipe the entire internal SD card is there are still files, folders, logs and backups from when I had my previous ROM. I'm having issues restoring my nandroid backup from the night of the 7th so is it at all possible for me to salvage some of my settings, apps and file backups from those existing files? Once I fix my nandroid, I'm going to keep the nandroid backup in a safe place and I ideally want to have a completely clean phone to start from: That means getting rid of all those old files and other nonsense from before. Is this a possibility?
I'm going to spend my time today trying to extract data from my nandroid backups using ROM Toolbox Pro. If that doesn't work, I have a nandroid backup from the 31st that has 99% of the stuff I need so I'll try to restore that. If THAT doesn't work, then I'm going to cry myself to sleep while trying to remember all of my contacts
Wish me luck, and hopefully I can get some answers to my last few questions!
Thanks,
Opethfan89

Thanks,
Opethfan89

You can flash it in your current recovery. It overwrites CWM. I would make sure you have a flashable for CWM just in case you need to go back for some reason. Also the backups between those 2 recoveries are not compatible. But I would nandroid with CWM before flashing twrp. I would also change were you recovery is pointing to for storage to the external SD if you haven't already. After you have cut your current backup and past it there. You can use rom toolbox pro to back up your contacts and restore it once you flash a new ROM.
Now as good advice going forward I would add your contacts to your Google account. That way when you flash new stuff or drop your phone in the toilet as soon as you add your Google account to the phone all those contacts will automatically download. But it is always a good idea to use tibu or rom toolbox pro to back up all your apps and seeing and use that after flashing roms to restore apps and settings.
But honestly I'd nandroid, move my contacts to Google, make app backups. Flash twrp. Then start flashing roms. You could be doing it in an hour. After you flash twrp make another nandroid so you have a twrp compatible backup. Then in a day or so of you are happy with everything delete the CWM backups for space.
Edit: as to extracting things from your current nandroid. Not sure if that is possible for one thing it is compressed not sure how that would work unless you are doing a full restore.
Also for future reference with TWRP. When restoring nandroid wipe like your flashing a new rom before restoring.

Hey thanks again for your quick response!! I'm glad I checked this first, because I'm in my ROM Toolbox app atm and it has an option to let me install TWRP 2.5.0.2 from within the app itself. Should I do it this way?
I will be adding all contacts to Google from now on. Unfortunately I saved all my stuff to my Verizon backup assistant so I just need one last shot at my phone to save all those contacts (manually, if I must) and be able to enter them onto the new ROM.
By "flash it in your current recovery" I assume you mean download the .zip, place it on my internal /sdcard, and then "flash" it just like I would flash a ROM, right?
I'm sure I have a "flashable" for CWM somewhere but like I said, I haven't done any of this stuff on this phone since I first bought it, and things have changed so much with everyone having OTA's and being locked out that I'm not sure what process is the same or what has changed. I can't afford to lose this phone so I'm hesitant to go balls to the wall to try things.
I will try the things you've listed here. Seems like a nandroid + TiBu + Google Contacts is my best bet to get up and running each time I decide to try a new ROM.
Thanks again!

Understand the hesitancy completely. But with nodding comes risk. It is always about whether you can accept the worst possible outcome.
Rom toolbox pro flashing recovery? I don't know never tried it.
Yes I would download the recovery. Leave it on SD card reboot to recovery and flash like a rom.
Yes nandroid tibu and saving your contacts to Google is the quickest way to get up and running again.

Mighty, just wanted to report that flashing TWRP 2.5.0.2 from within ROM Toolbox Pro worked like a charm. I'm on TWRP as we speak.
Thank you so much for your responses. If anyone else has anything to add, or a different response to my questions, please do so! In the meantime, I'm going to try to figure out how to get my nandroid backup working...
Cheers!
*EDIT* Made a backup with TWRP (whose interface is bloody phenomenal, btw), flashed CWM and its working like a charm!! Going to try the st0ckdr0id one as well. Still working on getting that nandroid working so I can recover my stuff and get to customizing!

Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer.
Before posting, please use the forum search and read through the discussion thread for [ROM] {5.1.1 lollipop} Tesla v1.8 by GZROMS [vs985][Official][Layers]6/30. If you can't find an answer, post it here, being sure to give as much information as possible (firmware version, steps to reproduce, logcat if available) so that you can get help.
Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!
So the 6/30 Tesla build for the VS985 is incredibly unstable for me for some reason...
It's very laggy and freezes up to the point of no return after a max of 15 minutes of use. I have to do a battery pull to get any results after that...I would love to run this as my DD because I love layers but I literally cannot use this...if someone could help me out that would be great. Thanks in advance guys and girls .:crying:

That's strange. I have been using it ever since I built it and its been running without a hitch.
Have you clean flashed? Are you running xposed, because that is usually the culprit of instability?

I even tried redownloading the ROM and flashing a different set of GAPPS(TK Full original GAPPS) and this time is hung up on "energizing coil" before it restarted itself twice then finally black screened and I had to do a battery pull. Like I said, I love the layers and I would love to run this as a DD but I literally cannot get it to boot up..I'll try out the next update to see if that works..it just may be my device that it doesn't play well with..
Oh and if it makes a difference , I'm on skydragon 4.0.1 it's a stock lollipop rom..thanks for all your hard work by the way Adam. You're an amazing dev.

You are using a 5.1 gapps package right? What you describe sounds like what happens when the wrong package is flashed.

No mobile data
I, as others have expressed in the dev forum, am having the issue with no mobile data at all. I am able to use wifi just not anything else. Below are the steps I have taken.
1. Clear everything (dalvik, system, cache, etc.)
2. Flash Tesla 1.8
3. Flash banks gapps.
4. No mobile data
5. Repeat steps 1-3, no mobile data
6. Flash 777 kernel, no mobile data
7. Flash Jasmine after clearing everything, mobile data works fine.
8. Repeat steps 1-2 only (no gapps), no mobile data
9. Adjust APN settings found in Tesla development forum, no mobile data.
10. Flash clean BlissPop 3.6 7/7/15, mobile data works fine.
I wan't to be clear I really like Tesla, but I've no idea what else to do.
Thanks in advance.

Trigger Warning: [Sarcasm] [Flaming] [Assholishness]
1. Read the freaking thread (both the Q&A and ROM)
2. Flash Tesla 1.8 and gapps just like every other time you have ever flashed anything to this phone. Lets be honest here, it is not rocket science.
3a. Setup phone using wifi then go into settings and turn on mobile data* or...
3b. Skip the setup and turn on mobile data*, then setup your accounts and so forth.
4. Enjoy Tesla
*since you read the thread (ROM thread), you found the link (https://plus.google.com/+CharG/posts/MCpbnqsXQyL) that I posted a few pages back that explicitly states in the first paragraph that mobile data is turned off by default.

I did read the thread and the post you mention. I did go to Settings->Data Usage and turned on mobile data, however I did omit that from my original steps. Thanks for the gentle reminder though.
To be completely certain it wasn't a combination of factors and my forgetting to turn it on during one of my many re-flashes I will re-flash and post back the results.

Have you wiped internal storage yet? If not thats what id try next. If you do make sure you back everything up first.

That may be the issue..although i used kdz to go back to 4.4 then updated to 5.x amd it still does it. Ill try that though. Why would i have to wipe if im already on lollipop?

Just a suggestion. There isn't much else you can do. Id wipe everything (internal, data, cache, d cache), then flash Tesla with one of the TK gapps. Good luck!
P.S. if you wipe your internal storage, make sure the ROM and Gapps are on your external SD card along with any other file you wish to save. You should backup your current rom to your SD card too.
Y'all are geniuses!!

So I'm pretty sure that wiping the internal like you suggested was the problem . I just wiped everything but external SD flashed broken ROM and their gapps, amd wiped it all again. And now it all seems to be running butter!! Thank you so much man. You and the OP are amazing. I'll donate when I get paid !

So I did a clean flash of Tesla 1.8 and Banks gapps again (coming from Bliss 3.6). Made SURE data was enabled, same issue. Clean flashed Jasmine 7, tested data, data worked. Clean flashed Tesla 1.8, enable data, data works. No idea. Bit concerned about the convoluted path to working data, but at least I am there now.
I am running a clean flash of 1.8. Since 1.5 I've had an issue where I experience extreme lag while my phone is charging in my car and the phone gets very hot. Didn't happen with my LG G2. It makes my phone almost unusable. Anyone have this issue or know how to fix it? Thanks.
