The new WiFi toggle - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

If you download the update from the computer using the Verizon update help app you will get the WiFi toggle if you used kies to download the update you won't have WiFi its that simple their two different updates or u can just wait like me who just got a notification right now at 3:20 about the update ota and its its only 15mins not an hour and 30mins like you all over the PC

Seee that's in my phone section I made the update wait I'm not ready to install it yet..
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app

I used Kies to do my update and ended up with no WiFi toggle.
My son took the update OTA and ... ended up with no WiFi toggle.
My phone would hang on the Verizon splash screen when trying to reboot. Tech support had me clear the cache but that would only work for that boot - it would still hang if I tried to boot without clearing the cache.
I decided to do a reset and now everything runs much better, boots fast like it did originally, and I now have the WiFi toggle.
Son is putting off the inevitable reset but the writing is on the wall, he's going to have to do it.
My take from the forums I've read is that you have to do a reset if you don't get the WiFi toggle after taking the update (regardless of the update method: OTA, Kies, Verizon updater).

If the wifi toggle does not show up after the update, do a reset. It will be there after you do!

What is the significance of the toggle that would justify the time of starting from scratch? The function is available with an app to toggle. I use Quick Settings since can not bother putting 260 apps back on the device and setting all my apps up again. Bleh to that.

I agree.. though...
I reset my device and the wifi toggle is there.
I fell like this is just another example of Verizon's "Overlord" mentality. Now I have a wifi toggle and right below the toggle I have an ongoing notification that sits there and tells me what my wifi status is. What? No option to remove it the unneeded redundancy? I am looking forward to rooting this device, if merely to get rid of the "Overlord"-ness forced onto this device.
Thanks for the toggle veriZon......

Thanks for confirming... I thought there was an error with my reset when I saw this redundant silliness. But no... just Verizon being Verizon, "Oh, so you all want the WiFi toggle? Then here you go!"

Any update on missing toggle after update?
So now I'm on MI1 and still I have no Wifi Toggle. I was wondering if anyone has found a work-around to get the toggle to appear other than a factory reset. Even if I root and backup all apps w/TiBU, it seems like too much effort to just get the toggle. Any advice?

If you root you can use an sqlite editor app and add the wifi toggle. I did this and it was quite simple, here's a link to a thread explaining how.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42004806
There is a thread on another forum with pictures and a video walk through but I'll let you google "wifi toggle s4" and find it since I doubt some people would like links to other forums here.

Not a problem. Thanks. Sad we need to resort to this given It's supposed to be there.

For some reason I had to add the "semi colon" before and after WiFiHotspot to make it show up as a toggle.
;WiFiHotspot;
So it doesn't work for you as described above quoted above try adding the semi-colon ; before and after they should fix it

Yeah, I'm definitely sure it's not in there. I have 17 toggles and I've seen screen shots from other S4 variations that had 20 or so toggles. It's definitely still missing.

I used this method and it worked great! it was simple (but read the thread for a few pages to get all the info to make it simple) and fun. Softwared will have glitches, it's just the way it goes, but it's nice to be able to fix some things on your own.

[APP] An "Hide Bar" app that just works!

Hi folks,
Want to hide you Honeycomb system bar easily ?
I found that app in the Xoom forum. It's and old post but lots of updates have surfaced since and it works great on my GT10.1 (Overcome 2.1). It should work on all rooted tablet.
What I like :
- Always visible shortcut in the bar
- Display it back by tapping/swipping from the bottom of the screen (no screen turn off with pin code stuff)
It's exactly what I had been dreaming of, so I thought it might worth sharing : http://ppareit.github.com/HideBar/. The APK is free to download. You can find it on that page
Please give credit to the developer if you like it!
Installed it and works great. Pretty easy to use.
Mine is rooted, but it doesn't really work.
Maybe I got it wrong, but you mean the bar in the bottom of the screen right?
I'm annoyed when I'm watching movies, and the bar in the bottom are faded out, but still there so the movie is not maximized.
It works just fine for me. I have to practice the uce. But I getvused to it.. we will se..
Nice tips.

Yep lovely. Great idea
Tried this app a few weeks ago but it didn't work - nice to see they fixed it .
But it brings one problem with it (well, more of an annoyance really). I keep my mobile connection disabled most of the time (I don't have an unlimited data plan) and when I reboot the tab, it shows a "You are not connected to mobile networks, so you can't ..." with the options "Connect" and "Cancel". Usually this wasn't a problem (it just appeared once after all, once you clicked "Cancel" it was done till next reboot) but it seems that when I "unhide" the bar, it checks for my mobile connection again and shows the annoying popup. I know I only have to click on the "Cancel" button and get on with my life but it's really annoying me
Anyone else has that problem? Or better yet, know how to fix it?
thank u so much man, this app is helping me a lot.
I remember trying it a couple months ago, but it didn't work with the gt. Sent the dev some feedback to let him know and he said he was working on it. Guess he did.

Aye, I'm mostly on Wi-fi anyway . And the cellular data where I live really isn't fast enough yet that you could be working comfortably on it (I don't live in the city) - so I went with the 1GB dataplan (more then enough for mails and other important stuff) - I can go over the 1GB for free, but they cut down the speed back to normal GSM after that 1GB.
Other dataplans were just too pricy (can't really affort 30€ in addition to other expenses right now ).
You can disable data under settings, wireless and networks, mobile networks. The message doesn't appear when I hide the bar, but when I swipe to get the bar back - but you're right, it's still annoying (I'm getting used to it though ^^).
Thanks for sharing! Really nice option to have when reading books, comics or painting.
Thanks here as well.
Working good so far on Bonsai ROM. I had supported another developer who was working on something similar but he never got it off the ground. Nice to see someone worked out this 'should have been in the default' feature.

Unhidding it is not as instant as it usually is in Windows when you auto-hide the system bar for instance (no nasty comments please... )
To unhide the systembar with this app, you have to tap/swipe the bottom of the screen a couple times (everywhere seems to work), and wait 2 or 3 seconds before it comes back. Hope this explanation helps... Let me know.
Btw, apps fan, don't miss the great Google sale going on in the Android Market! 10 cents for great apps, this is huge! I am not a big app buyer but this time I think I'll spend a bit...

Correction, it does work. It just "hiding" Superuser root request for some reason (noticed it in superuser logs). So I "clicked" the hidebar icon when the superuser app was in front - and I saw the request.

[Q] Any way to toggle data access notifications off?

I just started seeing the new application permissions thing on my HTC Thunderbolt and thought it might be interesting to see when apps were accessing data. It was interesting... for the first dozen or so times. Now I'm getting toast notifications (especially from Locale) about it's various activities all the time, and I am no longer finding it remotely interesting.
Is there any way to get back to the settings and turn the toggle back off?
Please?
Anyone?
What ROM are you using, and how did you enable the option? Some screenshots of the notifications and settings would help as well.
Running eternity-tb-runnymede-r238 (Infectedrom), will try to screen cap the next time one of these prompts appears. The screen only seems to show up since Android Market "upgraded" to Google Play, and only when an app changes data permissions.
Took me a while to get back to this, but...
Here's a screen cap of the settings screen I'm talking about. Only seems to show up after initial install/update to privacy settings and I have no idea how to get back to it.
Um, apparently I haven't posted enough to post links, so make this into a URL --
i.imgur.com/Kn03q.png
I think you are referring to an app that is doing that. It's called P Droid i think. Maybe if you just cleared it's data you could reset it. Just a thought I'm not sure there may be an easier way.

Hmm.
No, don't think I have that installed, unless it's baked into the ROM.

[Q] Why do you want root

Just curious what are other people's reasons for wanting root?
For me it's for wifi tether, ad free, use my backup pro to get some rooted features, get headphone icon to go away when plugged in and see some of the other features that big red took out. Pretty simple dude.
Pretty much for all the same reasons why everyone roots on all android platform phones... I'm assuming
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
I want root for command line access to system files, titanium backup, blocking ads, and for making the led notifcations stay on when the screen is on.
imagine your computer was locked down, you couldn't modify your os, if you wanted a certain feature you had to go buy a different computer that had that feature... how many computers would you need in order to get all of the features you wanted? or you could 'root' it and have just one computer but with all of the things you wanted on it... and remove the things you didn't want.
same concept, but on a phone instead of a desktop.

to get rid of ads, debloat, flash a custom recovery, and flash roms...pretty much the whole reason xda exists.

I think you can do this without root.
I hate the Ongoing WiFi notification and I want to kill it when I have root. Plus ad blocking, native tethering, over clocks, adding my own apps to Multi-Window, turning off the stupid Install mode when I connect it to computer over USB, getting S-Planner back, etc.
I want to get the missing apps back for multiview, I want infinite scrolling on the home screen without having to use a different launcher, I want to take advantage of the extra controls with Tasker and Secure Settings, titanium backup, removing bloat ware, the usual
TB, de-bloat, have more apps compatible with multiwindow, directory bind for moving game data to ext card, get rid of the clutter on the status/notification bar, 180 rotation, change the dpi/tablet mode, change kernels...and just to feed my ROM flash addiction!

[MOD][6/5] - Tether Hack

The Tether Hack and Tether hack with WiFi notification should work on stock rooted and stock de-odex I545VRUAMDK based ROMS.
If your rocking a custom ROM check with your ROM dev for changes to framework-res.apk BEFORE flashing this.
The other two mods, Remove E911 Icons, and disable Ongoing WiFi Noticiation NEED a de-odex ROM.
The orginal "Tether Hack doesnt always kill the WiFi Notification so I rebuilt the mods using a different method.
EDIT: One of the mods were removed because it caused GPS Issues.
Mods / Features
Tether Hack.zip
Adds Free tether for everyone
Removes ongoing WiFi Notification in status bar
Thanks to shoman94 for his help re-compiling framework-res. He has a good tut HERE!
Tether Hack - With WiFi Notification.zip

Compression has to be set to "None" on Samsung framework-res.apk
Thanks for posting this, both of the mods work great.
Just a quick question. With regards to the Tether Hack, how does this compare to apps like pdanet which bypass the subscription check but still seem to use the stock Wifi Hotspot? I don't know what exactly is happening behind the scenes with these other apps, if they do anything other than bypass the check. As an unlimited data user, is it "safer" to use pdanet or the other apps, or are you really just doing the same thing they provide without the need for another app?
Thanks again.

It hacks the tether feature samsung put in the ROM to call upon another app to verify the subscription.
So instead of
1. Tether app start
2. Call App to check subscription
3. Return results to tether app
4. Tether... Or not Tether...
It goes...
1. Start tether app
4. Tether.
Steps 2 and 3 are removed from the framework of the ROM
Yes on USB and if I wasnt so damned lazy I could even do Bluetooth... But this is good enough for 99.99% of the people. Who the hell uses Bluetooth anyways... Damn kids and there fads

These apps are using something momentary (IE: The hack has to happen every time you push the *Big Friendly Button*) to bypass the check; I'm not sure what and I haven't had the opportunity/need to go digging into the how. I use Widgetsoid and it does the same thing.
This hack is permanent; it happens when you flash and doesn't require anything afterward. It allows you to use the included app on the phone without having to download any free apps that might have limits or ads and there's no paid version (FoxFi, for example). It means there are less "moving parts" involved, and theoretically, there are fewer things that could go wrong.
As for is one "safer" than the other...I'll assume you mean any less likely to get you in trouble...and the answer is no. They're achieving the same thing through different methods; one's just a bit "cleaner" than the others.
EDIT: Didn't see Scott's post...damn pages. Still relevant, I think.

Right this is just a resource hack. Framework-res does not have any smali code and subsequently no dex or odex files.
Which app are you using to tether?
Hi Scott,
Thanks for developing the Clean Rom!
I've used your clean rom on the S3 and the S4 and I must admit it's some good stuff you've developed.
I've installed this tether hack but after reading this thread, I'm not clear on what app you are using to tether?
Is it the mobile hotspot app from the Big Red?
Or does Samsung have their own separate tethering app?
I know it's a newbie question, but any info would be appreciated.
Thanks again!
Where is the tether app icon? I can't find it anywhere...
Is this the TrevE tether?
What exactly does this do since we already have a hot spot with this phone?
Also, when flashing do the cache's need to be wiped?

[Q] Persitent Notifications, Auto install of apps not working.

I have searched and come up fruitless, I don't know if its the phrases I'm using or what. But anyway, I just got the S4 and I can't get it to auto install my apps from the market. I checked and unchecked auto install and backup multiple times to no success. 2, is there any way to get rid of all these god awful persistent notifications from samsung? Like the smart stay and GPS, etc? I like the features, just not having my shade completely taken over. I hope these aren't too noobish like questions, I just can't find the answers. I don't know, maybe I'm just stupid. Thanks for any help.
Mods, Please move. Accidently posted in wrong forum. Sorry for the inconvenience.
The auto installing of apps takes place during device setup if you chose that option then. Even then, you would have had to opt in on your old device to automatic backup to Google's servers.
As for the e911 and smart stay icons, you just haven't looked hard enough. There is am active thread in the themes and apps forum that answers your question.

I've double checked my old nexus and resounds and both have back up to Google checked. I don't know why it won't do so. I actually had the same problem with nexus too. But it's rooted so I just use tibu. I can't do that in this situation because of moving and not having time to sit down and play with the S4. However I am throughly impressed so far except for a call dropping issue earlier.
Thanks for the theme suggestion, I'll look more into them when I'm able to get around to rooting this thing. I was just hoping it was a setting I was missing.
To the mod, thanks for moving the thread for me.
