I thought that the folders in the root of sd card with the names of the apps is their location
But then I saw in the storage option that these folders are labeled others with my custom files I put there
So where is their instalation located?
Installed apps are located in data/app

How do I change permissions of files/folders on my external sd card, preferably with the ES File Explorer app? Is there a way to hide files/folders that are on the external card?
I can easily use it to change permissions of files/folders at the root level by accessing the "properties" option of said file, but I don't get this same functionality on stuff in my ext SD card... Am I missing something or is there some good reason why this is not possible (loaded question, I know)?
You don't set permissions in storage space...
To hide it, just put a . At the beginning of the name
For photos and videos you don't want showing in the gallery, put them all I'm the same folder, and then make a file named:
.nomedia
Then simply reboot.
Many of my app folders on my SD card, and a number of similar folders on mnt/media. Can I safely delete all from the sdcard (how can i tell if they are running off userdata partition?) Can I delete the stuff under media as well as begin setting up my own folders?
My carrier is MetroPCS. Since this phone only has 1.8GB of internal memory, I have a 16GB microSDHC card for external storage, but I can't move anything from sdcard0 to my external sd card in File Manager because nothing shows up on sdcard0. I want to move my pictures from sdcard0 to my external sd card, but nothing shows up under the "pictures" folder in sdcard0. I can't just make my storage option the SD card because when I do that, it's still saving on the internal memory, because apparently the phone thinks that sdcard0 is the SD card. So I need a way to change the storage option to my external card or a way to uncover these files that are hidden somehow.
I'm operating on Jellybean 4.1.2 and 3.0.31 kernel.
@pennyboard420 Welcome to XDA forums.
Your camera pictures are actually saved in the "DCIM/thumbnails" folder and not the "Pictures" (only my screen-shots are saved in the "Pictures" folder) folder and no this folder won't open with File Manager. You need a different file browser, like Root Browser that lets you see hidden files/folders. On some of them you will need root access to modify or change these files and folders.
You can't set and change your default storage location from sdcard0 to the external sdcard natively.
You would need to install an app like Link2sd or a swap script, again the device needs to be rooted.

I've tried your solution but wasn't able to get it rooted because some drivers that I needed couldn't be run on the Surface RT tablet that I have due to the tablet only allowing Microsoft developed software to run. However, I have found an alternate solution: Instead I connected my LG L9 to the tablet, opened up the DCIM/Thumbnails folder and manually copied all my pictures into the DCIM/100LGDSC folder of my external SD card.
Chances are you probably already know about this, but just putting it out there.
Thanks again.

I'm trying to delete some music files and folders on my SD card. I can use Solid Explorer to copy files over my LAN to my music folder. Once I copy, I can then delete those new files/folders off the SD.
The problem is with older files and folders. Solid Explorer and the built-in My Files app both fail to delete, with no information explaining why.
I'm guessing the problem is with any files and folders that were put on the SD over USB. 35GB would take too long over WIFI.
I had a rooted S5 with Alliance Rom, and just got an S9+. When backing up my data, specifically for an app called Podcast Addict, I exported a backup from within the app, and it stored on the SD card. Podcast Addict was installed on the external sd card, and it exported a .backup file and a .json file to /android/data/{App Name} on the external sd. I could have sworn that I moved it out of that directory or shared it to google drive, but apparently I did not.
I also had Titanium Backup installed, and I can't remember what directory it stored backups in, but it was somewhere on the external sd card.
I moved the card to the S9+ and went to import the backup file, and there were no files that looked like the backup file on the SD card. I also no longer see the Titanium Backup folder.
Does the /android/data folder get overwritten when inserting the sd card into a new phone, even if it's an external sd card, and the app isn't installed there on the new device?
On a non rooted phone that folder is not accessible as it is a system lvl folder as well as titanium backup will not work as well as it requires root as well. your best to put your sd back in your old device and use a program such as my backup pro to backup apps to be restored you will not be able to restore any kind of data for apps that are not linked to the playstore or game data that is linked to something such as Facebook or google play games no folders should be overwritten but android/data/app name are usually device specific to whatever device the app is on
