[Q] Flashing kernel from recovery - HTC Desire X

Since I'm stuck on Windows 8.1 Blue preview I'm unable to use fastboot, so I've done a bit of googling.
I found this utility from the HTC One forums which apparently works for Qualcomm devices only, so surely it should work for us?
Anyway I'll go and test it and will report back, but I just wanted to say, IF YOU WANT TO KEEP FASTBOOT/ADB WORKING, DON'T UPDATE TO WINDOWS BLUE
EDIT: I've read further and it seems like the mmcblk0p for the utility may be different for the Desire X. I'll check it out.

I asked for some more information on the thread you found and will see if it's possible making this working for our device.

cheers mate, it sure would make life a lot easier for noobs.... and those fallen into the Windows 8.1 trap

Nopes,
doesnt work. just tried.

I'm pretty sure you'd need s-off to flash kernels from recovery

Yes, you are right.
Actually there is some write protection rights which do not let anything run from recovery partition to write on boot partition. However, it is not completely related to S-OFF.
However, My bro had HTC explorer low end phone. It had S-ON and still they could flash boot img from recovery without any issues.
HTC is unpredictable these days.

But why does it work for HTC One then?

must be an exploit. Or HTC are licking the feet of their prime flagship customers. Thats actually quite unfair why they make strange decisions.
Sense lite, removing HTC swipe, JB 4.1.1 STILL, and many shady decisions are the reason why they dont have many more years as a big company. Shame. They were the pioneers and now the chasing pack.

This. There not the same company they used to be and after the experiences with the last two phones I'll be switching permanently to a Sony Flagship device when I get the chance

My remaining days are limited with the Desire X, I'm buying a Nexus 4 in the next month. But I will still help with testing and everything. This will allow my Desire X to be a full testing device and I don't need to worry about bricking

Rebooting for no apparent reason

So I got s-off last night and since then I've flashed like three or four different ROMS. Every single one I try, my phone will boot and then reboot for no apparent reason. I can be in a menu or get an email or text message when it happens and I can't figure out why it's doing this. Anybody have any ideas?
Old firmware patch

Run an ics ruu and update firmware. Running ics on gb firmware doesnt work. Or flash old firmware patch as mentioned above.

Will do, thanks. I wish HTC, Motorola and Samsung phones were as easy to flash and install ROMS, kernels, etc. as Nexus devices are.
That's because the nexus bootloader is not locked I believe the gs3 has a locked bootloader though.

Nexus devices are made by HTC and Samsung so there's a little conflict there
I believe that if you are going to root/unlock... ect then you should be required to learn the phone, yes nexus devices are easy to root and flash custom roms but this makes it easier for issues to arise in the long run. Learning basic adb commands and fastboot can be a life saver.
Plus Nexus devices can be boring, i love options and AOSP can only be changed so much. Every rom will have similarities
When you have a HTC phone with sense you typically get MIUI, AOSP, and future sense roms/ports.and this is a crackflashers dream
The Rezound being one of the oddballs due to ril issues. once this is figured out for this phone and future phones then i believe HTC should be the way everyone goes

[Q] Most attractive option for selling an Aria?

I finally upgraded to one of the ginormous phones after fighting it for so long. I just couldn't take the "out of memory" errors anymore on my Aria. So now that I have the HTC One X, I'd like to sell my mint-condition Aria. It's got CWM and CyanogenMod 7.0.3, but like I said, with hardly any apps on it, it's constantly out of memory.
So my question is what should I do with this Aria before I list it on Craigslist?
Official HTC Android 2.2
Fresh CM7
Other?
Plain ol' stock Aria's are selling for $100-$125 here in LA. Should I add a premium price for having it rooted and custom ROM installed?
In my experience, having a rooted phone with a custom ROM had actually lessened interest in phones I've sold. I would go full stock, unrooted, stock recovery also. You never know when someone will want to do a factory reset, and if I understand correctly, this causes problems for rooted phones. The people that know how and are interested in rooting will do it anyway, the rest will be perfectly happy with it in stock form.
Good point. Thanks.

I'd go with rooted 2.3.5 liberty S rom. I'd delete some stock apps and overclocked the core. Then i'd sell it. But that's just me
Stock ROM I would pay less if the Phone's ROM is customed.
I'd just leave it on a stock looking ROM.

Dude... Jealous of your rooted One X!
stock with automatic transmission
My guess is you would have better luck for resale with stock ROM.
I base this on the experience of selling a nearly new car. I have always been a fan of manual transmissions and to this day that's all we have in the garage. About 20 years ago I was assigned overseas and had to sell a nearly new Mazda 626 with a stick. I got few calls, all of whom had overlooked "manual transmission" in the ad and backed out immediately when they realized it. I ended up selling it back to the dealer at a big loss.
Only five percent or so of automobiles on the road today have manuals. I imagine custom ROM users are a similarly small minority.
Even though the experience is better, even though my own technophobe wife loves her Aria running CM7 nightly, a random buyer--who probably will drive up with an automatic--would be more likely to buy with the stock ROM.
PS: By mentioning a car sale 20 years ago, I've probably identified myself as part of an even smaller minority: old people who run with a custom nightly
Here's what you should do. Root it, install custom recovery, boot loader should be unlocked after using unrevoked. Then flash Liberated FR008, so it will look stock, but they can read up on root and take it from there if they care enough

This is well and good until they decide to factory reset within the ROM for whatever reason. I'm not sure if that is disabled in Liberated FR008 or not, but better safe than sorry IMO.

All a factory reset does is wipe /data and /cache
Root is in /system/xbin
Could you elaborate on problems that would arise?

I can tell you that once I tried to wipe data from the ROM itself (not CWM Recover) and it hosed the phone. I couldn't boot to anything.
This was when I first got my Aria and didn't know much about rooting Android devices.
I would restore Stock and sell it. If the buyer asks about any techie-stuff like "is it rooted?" you could root it, load CWM Recovery, and ask if he'd like a custom ROM on it. You could even ask for a little extra $$ for the effort... Just a thought.

Yeah, you can flash ROMs, but you have the flash to boot.img separately via the commandline. A real pain in the ass if you want to switch ROMs frequently.

No it's not 99.9% of the roms out there use either stock kernel or a modified stock kernel, so most roms will work with another roms boot.img

It cost about 80 usd in Russia. I`ll try to do it in a few month
FYI the endeavour is the HOX not the HOX+. But im sure it's possible with tools like SETool/LGTool too. But these methods cost a small fortune.

Requesting s-off solution

Good day guys, I have noticed that a s-off solution for the desire x has not been achieved as of yet and seems to getting the way of this phone being ignored and at the bottom of the pecking order regarding a s-off solution.
I thought it might help you guys who want and is desperate for s-off on the desire x to make a request to moonshine as there is this email address to requesting a request for s-off asking to leave make and details for a request for s-off. ...email to with make and hboot version..etc to:-
[email protected]
I believe that moonshine as done a fantastic job in making the moonshine for s-off on devices but the more folk that request s-off for this device we stand a better chance of a solution
thanks for time reading

there is a couple things I miss from my lgog. The lgog IPS screen is much better. I also liked having an external sd card. I've been busy lately but when I get some free time I can't edit to dive into the kernel source n see what I can really make this phone do

See I like colors better and with faux gamma control I was able to make the colors more vibrant n make the screen pop. As far as s-off that's a plan since I'm a dev. For LG and Samsung. I've never worked on a HTC device. HTC is it's own beast. My first android device was the HTC evo on Sprint . That was my only HTC device. I've ever owned. I remember then certain it needed certain hboots n radio's. For certain roms. especially when it came to aosp. With Samsung and LG all you have to do is unlock the bootloader and have a recovery.

If I were you I'd wait until the 4.3 ota hits. Based on all the near final leaks recently, I'd say it very well could be only 1 or 2 weeks away.
That's what I'm doing anyway, that way ill have updated firmware without needing to s-off, but then again s-off might not be possible for a while on the new hboot.
So maybe don't wait if you want s-off right away haha.
