Updates and new installs - ok; sideloads - no go - HTC Rezound

S-on and rooted.
Noticed this with Aurora about a week ago. Thought it was just a problem with that app. Now I discover the same problem trying to update VLC.
"Unknown sources" box IS checked.
Any ideas?

When you say sideloading, do you mean installing from an apk on your phone, or pushing one with adb?
At what point in the process do you get an error or stoppage, and describe what that stoppage or error is.

Sure.
I was trying to update from an apk that I had downloaded to the phone. (Same behavior for apks for two different apps, Aurora and VLC.)
The install process starts, but can't get past the "Cancel / Install" dialog screen unless I select Cancel. When I try to select Install, it behaves as if the button is not recognized.

Yeah, that sounds like an overlay issue. Do you have HALO or a screen filter running on your phone? Or anything that draws on top of everything else? If so, try disabling it, then installing the apk. If that works, you can enable whatever it was again without any issues (until you need to install another apk from sd).

I uninstalled a bunch of apps. I tried after a handful at a time and finally had eliminated the culprit. Thanks.
I'm not sure which app is the culprit, but I'll try to sort that out.
Thanks for the feedback.

[APP] NookColor Tools - Access hidden settings

greetings, nookies
i just threw together this app for the NookColor. it gives you access to hidden system settings, and allows you to select soft keyboards that are installed.
it's super basic and ugly right now, but i hope it will come in handy. i plan to expand and refine it as time goes on.
when you click the All Settings button, you'll see a list of all the available preference panels. note that some of them don't work. not sure why.
some highlights:
- Development > Auto Mount - turn off usb auto mount
- Development > Manage Applications - uninstall apps, clear defaults
- Battery Use
- SD Card and Phone Storage - shows available space in internal storage
- Testing > Battery Info - status, voltage, temp, etc
- Testing > Battery History
- Testing > Usage statistics
if you find yourself on a screen without a back button, remember that you can swipe left over the notification bar at the bottom, if it's showing.
for info on installing other keyboards, see this thread. basically, you need to copy your keyboard's apk to /system/app and reboot. if you haven't done this before, here's a howto.
new! to enable the non-market apps checkbox, you need to copy this apk to /system/app. if you have 0.1 installed, uninstall it first, then copy 0.2 to /system/app and reboot. this is necessary for the app to have the right permissions to modify secure system settings. the app will still work if you install it the normal way, but you won't be able to use the non-market apps checkbox.
as usual, i accept no responsibility if this messes up your device. use at your own risk.
changelog:
0.2 - added install non-market apps option. apk must be in /system/app to enable this feature. filtered some unusable settings screens out. added some descriptions for the buttons.

EDIT: OOh nice, development settings access, usb debug mode, usb auto mounting galore..
Thanks!
Hey, thanks a bunch
keep up the good work!
Thank you very much! Unfortunately it didn't help my keyboard problem because the only keyboard that showed up was "To enable it (the Scandinavian keyboard) go to Settings - Language & keyboard. There you need to check Scandinavian keyboard if it's not checked". So I'm guessin that it's not checked and that the specific settings file (I guess it's like a control panel app in Windows) isn't even there on a Nook. Or is it just not activated that easily?
If I try to launch the keyboard i get "Activity not found". Any idea if there is another setting to activate the keyboard for use?
Very nice work.

see this thread. you have to copy your keyboard apk to /system/app and reboot for it to show up as an option.
Thanks! I actually tried something like that, but couldn't get it copied because of the settings. Gonna try again tomorrow (getting late her in Norway).

hold off on installing this app by copying it to /system/app. it seems this might cause your NC to do a factory reset when using any of the bn apps like the library. more info to come when i get a chance to investigate. until then, you can install 0.2 as a normal app.
Ben74, this app is excellent!
Also, I noticed that when NC freaks out and wipes to factory settings, it does not wipe /system. Does this mean that, in principle, your app will allow to keep root (with the Development menu settings)?
Thanks again!

are you saying that you also got a factory reset after installing NookColor Tools to /system/app? after the reset, did you still have root? i did a full reflash of /system and /data after that happened to me, so i don't know.

No, I am not saying that at all.
I am saying that in my unrelated tinkering, I have had wipes that always end up keeping the /system intact. (I suppose they were not of the full-reset-"factory.zip" variety.)
I was simply guessing that if that were the case and your apk survived the "soft" wipe (as I have seen with other apks), then following the ordeal, the NC would still be rooted ... Maybe ...
That would be a cool possibility, no? Not having to go through the initial rooting procedure.

Aha, after reading this post, I understand the context of your question better.
Here is my case: I had done a bunch of work and had NookColor Tools installed as a regular app. After performing some action that involved invoking the NC Home app, I got a message that the Nook encountered some error and will now undergo a factory reset. After the reset, I had to reroot, of course.
The bottomline, in my case, with respect to this discussion, is that the wipe-causing problem occurred while NookColor Tools was not in /system/app folder.
At the moment, I reinstalled everything and this time I put NookColor Tools in /system/app.
Will keep an eye out for interesting developments ...
I see. The factory reset that happened on my NC was the type that only wipes /data. I'm not sure if root would be retained or not. I'm also not certain that the reset I got was related to my app. Has anyone else who installed it to /system/app experienced a reset?
Sent from my NookColor using the XDA app
Ok, thanks for the info. So it seems possible that the reset was due to something else. Has anyone else experienced a reset?
Sent from my NookColor using the XDA app
I've experienced one of these, but before I'd ever installed your app. It was right after I had tried to install the Market/Gmail fix as described by Mister Muffin. Something about an authentication problem, and then, we're going to reset ... no yes/no option, just went ahead and did it.
ok, it looks like the reset i had was probably caused by something else. i have installed NookColor Tools to my /system/app, and haven't gotten another reset so far. please let me know if anyone has any problems when installing NookColor Tools to /system/app.

[FIX] Re-Registering NookColor with B&N

I hope this helps everyone! I followed the directions for Auto-Nooter particularly the part where it tells you to De-Register your device with B&N. After auto-nootering there did not seem to be a way to relaunch the app that allows you to sync with B&N. Here is how I get re-registered:
Open NookColor Tools
Tap All Settings
Find the options listed "Wireless"
There is 3 options for Wireless, choose the second one in the list.
This will open up the Barnes and Noble starting wizard.
Press Continue with setup, and it will ask you to login to B&N or Create a new account.

I stumbled upon this today too, can vouch that it does work.
Does anyone know why there are multiple "Wireless" entries listed after autonootering in the NookColor Tools?? BTW, there are multiples of some others too.....Thks
If you try each one, they open up different wifi settings menus, one for the quick access from the notification bar, one for the actually settings menu wifi access, and one for the wizard at the beginning.
Does this fix the auto restore that keeps happening ?
If you reregister the device, will it prevent the nook color from auto restoring the software as it randomly seems to do ?

After rooting my nook, I've registered it to my B&N account like normal, but none of my past purchases show up. It just shows 2 books, the 2 nook manuals. Do I need to refresh the list or something?
Congratulations self, you're blind. Just noticed the refresh icon on the Library screen.

I'm a little confused, I do not see any mention of de-registering my nook in the auto-nooter instructions.
How to Use:
Before you begin:
* To update to 1.0.1 you must do a complete wipe.
* You must update to 1.0.1 to use AutoNooter 2.12.25 Instructions Here.
1 You must already have a registered NOOKcolor
2 You must have a Gmail/Youtube linked Account. IF you used a Gmail account for B&N Registration you should use that one for this process.
3 You must either have dd (Linux) or WinImage (Windows) software.
4 You must have an external microSDCard reader or this will not work. Do NOT use the NC.
5 You must have enough intelligence to follow instructions.
Let's get started:
1 Download Auto-Nooter from here: auto-nooter-2-12-25.img.zip
2 Linux: Unzip and use dd if=auto-nooter-2-12-25.img of=/dev/sdcard
2 Windows: Unzip and use WinImage to "Restore Virtual Hard Disk Image" to your SDcard.
2 Windows Alternative: https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/+download
3 Unplug your NOOKcolor from computer. (If Plugged in.)
4 Insert AutoNooter SDcard into your NOOKcolor.
5 Plug the USB cable into your computer and your NOOKcolor. (This will boot up the NOOKcolor.)
6 Your NookColor will reboot when it's done.
That was the hard part, now to the simple stuff.
7 Upon boot unlock your screen.
8 At the Android Welcome Screen skip Sign In.
9 Enable Location Services when given the option.
10 Connect to Wifi and launch Youtube from "Extras".
11 Click the Menu button (The one RIGHT of the Up Arrow).
12 Select "My Channel" and Login using your Gmail Account.
13 Exit Youtube and Launch Gmail from "Extras".
14 Sync your Gmail Account and Exit. (If it fails to sync that is fine.)
15 Open up Market and Accept Terms and Service.
If you made it this far your nook should be successfully Rooted. Go Download an App to make sure.
16 Enable Non-Market Installs by running the NookColor Tools App.
17 If your Youtube fails to launch Uninstall and Reinstall Youtube from /data/app
18 Go to Settings > Device Info > SdCard > UnMount > Format
Complete Wipe:
1 8 Failed Boots > Wipes /system
2 Factory Reset > Wipes /data
You must do both of these to completely wipe clean your NOOKcolor.

Quick question. I have a NC autorooted and its working great. I'd like to give to my GF so I need to remove my gmail/BN account information and setup one for her. Do I need to de-register with B&N and wipe the NC to be able to reregister it with her gmail/youtube/BN account info?
Thanks.

I have this problem as well. Almost immediately after updating and booting into the pre-rooted 1.1 V2, the Nook reboots and loads the regular 1.0.1 software. None of my previously installed apps show up, but I still have Market (non-working), Rom Manager, and Root. Luckily, I made a recent backup and can get my stuff back, but it's on the 1.0.1 software. I still haven't figured out how to keep 1.1 V2 installed, and I'm not sure if my 950MHz UV/OC kernal 'stuck' either. Someone suggested 'Freezing' Device Manager in Rom Manager, so I'm going to give that a shot.

I have the same problem. Its SO annoying. Constantly back and forth with the resets. I was the one who suggested "freezing" device manager but this is not an acceptable solution. I want to be able to use the B&N store also =/
I've actually decided to give up on this update for now. I'm staying on the 1.0.1 rooted software. Every time I upgrade to 1.1v2 it auto defaults to an older version. "Freezing" device manager did not help.
[UPDATE] So I gave it one more shot. This time I removed all the permissions of any file in system/app that seemed B&N related. Rebooted. Then I used Rom Manager to update to 1.1V2. So far no issues, and I can use the Library feature. I'm still afraid to click the "lend book" and I think I will completely remove it as soon as I figure out how (there doesn't seem to be a matching apk in system/app).

FYI, I found out the random resets are caused by Titanium Backup. When you restore system settings with it, I think the AndroidID gets changed and then it resets. I restored from stock, installed Titanium Backup, restored ONLY the apps NOT data and I'm set.
I can goto the shop or use Lend Me with no issues.

Somehow I do not think this is the issue... Since this is happening to me and I do not even have Titanium Backup. Everytime I turn on Wifi it reregisters my Nook... So frustrating.
I am thinking of purchasing a used NC @ v1.1
Do I simply create or new B&N account? Or is there a de-register -> re-register process? Or is this something that the seller needs to do?

does NT support normal apk?

heard that NT may have BL lock, it really is a bad news.
i'm wondering whether NT support normal apk downloaded from other places?
like installing with other markets and use these markets to install apks?
and could someone tell me the influence if we can't crack this lock?
can we reformat the partitions?can we root the device?
thank you!
Check some of the other threads. Much progress has been made, and its very easy to side load apks.
While no one has rooted it yet, it's still very early. Give it time.

yeah, i saw many guys said they sideload the apps, but i don't understand what is sideload
Sideload = loading apk onto an sd card. You can then put sd card into NT and install app that way.
You will need to first enable apps for unknown sources, you can find how to do this in a number of threads.

Sideloading is the installation of an app from a non-approved source. This can involve installing via downloaded or transferred APKs, installing from a sd card, pushing via ADB, etc.
i got it, this means if i have 3rd party market or apk files, i can install applications in NT

As a rule, it appears that you can install most apps by sideloading. This post gives the basics. Read the whole thread and follow it. If you have any questions, just ask them (search first). The XDA community is the kindest that I know of on the internet, people want to help you.
Hope this question is in the right place.
After downloading ANY apk., after clicking on it, a window pops up that reads:
Install Blocked: For security your phone is set to block installation of applications not obtained from Android Market
Below that is "OK" as my only option.
I've visited and revisited the recent rooting threads and other similar sources and found that most if not all arrive at a different option that offers "Settings" that can be changed. Even when I go directly to Settings>Device Settings, I have NO options to alter and allow "Unknown Sources"
Device: 1st Nook - purchased Nov 2011/ firmware 1.2
2nd Nook - purchased approx April 2011/ firmware 1.3
Both units respond the same way. What are my options here. Thanks for any and all help.

[Q] New Nook from store blocking install & APKs

Just purchased a Nook from B&N, unit shows version 1.40, tried following rooting instructiins and unit does not recognize apks. Tried loading update from other thread. Still no success.
Has anyone else experienced new units blocking sideloading that are not 1.41?
I was worried about something like this happening so I've decided to get it from Best Buy instead assuming that newest units would hit B&N and may even be updated to 1.40. I'm just hoping that it will be old stock after christmas since I've been given the choice of B&N gift cards or Best Buy ones.
You have to enabled unknown sources with the tps launcher.
Sorry, I wasn't clear earlier. I was trying to type on the Nook and was frustrated.
OK, So followed the link to install the apk. The Nook comes up with a menu about installing using the Application Installer or Package Installer. Selecting the Application Installer comes up with an Error about not being a recognized file type. Selecting the Package Installer comes up with an error about there being an problem with a package. Neither case comes up with the option to install unrecognized files. (I can't get the exact messages because I don't have it handy right this moment.)
I thought that perhaps they had the updated software just tagged as 1.40, so I downloaded the acclaim_update.zip and placed it on the sd card. Restarted the Nook and it came up showing that it was installing the update. But after the install it restarts and still has my details, thus it did not appear to do the update as expected.
I went through the process several times and experienced the same results.

We get the same message the other poster is getting about the file being corrupted or not a valid package.

If you miss it once, it seems to be gone forever. Very strange, had the same experience and wasted a few hours.
Do this:
1. Wipe the device and start fresh to get the one time setting back.
a) hit the N button and go to "Settings"
b) select "Device Info"
c) select "Erase & Deregister Device"
This will guide you through wiping the entire device.
Once complete, restart, and it will be like it is out of the box again, fully wiped.
2. Complete the initial setup and when you get to the home screen again, go straight to the browser, then get on over to the thread to download the tgps app again.
a) suggest going to google.com and searching "xda forum nook table root"
b) select the "[Blocks OTA's!] Full root for Nook Tablet. [11/20/11] [Permanent root!]" thread from the search results
c) scroll down and select the tgps app to download.
d) go to the notification window and click on tgps_launcher.apk download complete.
e) from the pop up, select "Package Installer" from the two options. The next screen should have the "Settings" button there that was missing before when it errors out.
Note: writing this all up from memory, so pay close attention to all steps after you click the notification window to use Package Installer. That setting will pop up, and if you miss it, it tends to not pop up again until you clean wipe (in my case).
Hope that helped!

My wife has a new Nook Tablet. We have opened the .apk from the notification bar at the bottom of the screen, we do not get prompted to allow unknown sources.
We get the same message the other poster is getting about the file being corrupted or not a valid package.

I thought the trick was that you had to sideload using the nook browser? Download the tps launcher apk thru the nook browser then try installing it.
yes, if you use the wrong app installer the first time it is gone forever, use power and N factory restore to restore back to factory and then try sideloading again with the right apk installer the first time.
You donĀ“t have to factory restore your device!!!
Just download the .apk again and open it with "package installer" the first time!
This error occurs only if you try to open it with the app installer first.
Download unsuccessful
I am in pretty much the same situation. When I try to download the apk from http://comptonsoft.com/test/ the download starts but when I click the notification it says "Download unsuccessful". If I tap that, it takes me to the downloads page which is blank. What should I do next?
just purchased a nook tablet for my dad today. will test this out in a couple of days when he roots it. let see if it is 1.4.1 or 1.4.0 and if anything is blocked.

[Q] Nook Tablet 1.4.2 .apk issue

I have rooted with no problem, but now I have 3 questions.
1) I can't get any .apk files to load. I get an error saying "This NOOK cannot read this file..."
2) in NT Settings, I can't get the unknown sources box to stay checked
3) Is there any way to put the android market apps on the home screen?
Thanks for any help!
I believe sideloading apks was blocked in 1.4.1.

That sucks! What about putting android market apps on the main screen of the NT?
There is a Nook Color app in the Android Market that does exactly that.

Most of this stuff is explained elsewhere in the forums . . . I know everybody says that, but believe me, it's true!
To get you started - - you can sideload apps on any rooted Nook:
(1) Get the NT Hidden Settings app (which you have)
(2) Goto "Hacks" - - tap "Unknown Sources Hack" Hit "Back"
(3) Goto "Application Settings" - - toggle "unknown sources"
(4) reboot the Nook
(5) Check in "NT Hidden Settings" . . "Applications Settings" . . to see if "Unknown Sources" is still checked. If not, repeat the steps above.
It's not unusual for people to have to do this 2 or 3 times to get the hack to "stick". Some people swear by toggling each setting on and off a couple times before rebooting. I know it's a PIA, but as far as I know everybody eventually get's it to 'stick' after a number of repeats.
Good news is, once you get Unknown Sources to stick, you won't have to mess with it again unless your restore to stock & re-root.
The "Nook Color Applications" app works well on the Nook Tablet, as noted above. You might also want to look at Go Launcher or ADW Launcher - they give you a new desktop with multiple home screens and other features, but still let you use the stock book reader, Netflix, etc. While some people here are using CM7 or CM9, a lot of people have really tricked-out the stock NT ROM with a 3rd-party launcher. I run mine like that, and I've actually liked it better than CM7.
But I'll switch to CM9 immediately once it's a bit more stable. ;-)
Best of luck!
awesome! I will try tonight. Right now, my two year old wont let me play with "his" nook. lol
Thanks, this forum is the best!
Hey there,
I've been having a similar problem. I recently rooted (using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529553 method), and have been able to access the market and download apps that way, but I'm unable to sideload them. When I try to open any app it says "Unable to install. This application was not able to install onto your device. Please "Archive" and then "Unarchive" the application to try again." I have an SD card inserted, and this error comes up with the Amazon market, and the HomeCatcher app. My unknown sources box is checked though! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I believe veronica is currently recommending the "new" beta ( internal only for now ) made by CelticWebSolutions.

If you want to have Google play installed the easiest process to do now is to make a boot able cm SD card. CM10+ is the most recent so I recommend using it. There are also SDC versions of cm7 and 9. These don't affect your internal storage at all so the level of caution for bricking is low.
If you want to look into these SDC ROMs head over to the iamafanof site. There are links to the ROms and further instructions on how to create the cards.
