Phone getring hott - T-Mobile HTC One (M7)

Just noticing that my phone is getting hot and never happen before
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app

mine gets hot all the time. its thin and its got alot of heat producing power under the hood. seems to heat up most when using cell network mostly. Though i can play a 2 hour long movie off storage with airplane mode on and it stays decently warm.
id say its normal operating temp if the temperature is around 90F (32C)
only time to get concerned is if the battery gets near 150F (65C)
but normally the phone will alert you when it gets anywhere near that hot.
can check out This App that ive used a for a while it lets you put a thingy in your status bar drop down and will tell you the battery percentage if its charging its temperature and will also let you make custom notifications. for example itl notify you if the battery exceed a temperature youve set. or if the batteries gotten low etc etc

I think you need to be more clear. There is a difference between the phone "feeling hot" and "being hot" The metal exterior is more efficient transferring heat to your hand, due to physics. I have found that the phone itself runs just as cool or cooler than the S4, and that's what important. Are you monitoring the internal temp and are concerned or are you just referring to how warm it feels?

Normal. Even my body heat in my pocket causes the phone to warm up.

[Q] Excesive heat from atrix

Over the past month and a half that I have had an atrix I have noticed that my atrix has burnt me several times. I have it in my pocket and it just gets really hot. It doesnt seem to be the battery as the entire phone is very hot. This has been happening even before I rooted my phone. It burns me through the otter box. Im reluctant to take this back to at&t as i would have to unroot it. Are other people having this issue?
If its ridiculously hot, as it seems it is, thats not normal and you should return it ASAP. Also rooting would not affect heat output in any way.
One, wrong section.
Check a taskmanager when it starts running hot. Find out what is pulling so much processor load to create the heat.
I had this problem, took it back for replacement, then had the same problem on the new device. It turned out it was the Exchange sync causing the Motorola.services process to run constantly and kill the battery.
I solved it by changing the Exchange sync from push to every 15 minutes. I also do not use any sync with Google (mail, contacts, or calendar). My battery life is unbelievable now and the device stays cool 90% of the time.
Wasn't crossposting restricted in this forum?
Ha. Excessive heat. Buddy at least your phone doesn't have a aluminum battery door. Try touching that when your phone is being overclocked @ 1.5 ghz.
But essentially something that is syncing often is causing your phone to use the radio alot. And since its in your pocket there really isn't any airflow to cool it down hense the phone will generate heat.

Hi all!
I hope my post will help other people like myself that ware looking for information regarding this issue:
I installed TempMonitor and followed the teperateure of the device. There are 2 temperatures to measure: CPU and battery.
I will elaborate my findings:
1. CPU temp at rest without sync (push mail turned off) is 28-31C after a while (depends on the room temp).
In slight effort the CPU temp can get close to 50C but normaly is ~40-45C
It seems like the CPU temp is not that important and only when the CPU is running hot for ~10 minutes you feel the heat and it starts to get annoying. Notice that in this point a lot of battery juice is drawn.
2. Battery temp is also ~28C at rest. It gets up to 35C on ongoing effort. Since it is very large (1920mAh), you will feel the heat. I think that the battery is the main heat factor in the device and the CPU and graphic engine running in addition to the battery getting hot will cause the entire device to feel warm or even hot.
3. I noticed that at the beginning, one corner of the device (lower right) got REALLY hot and REALLY annoying at times. After 2 weeks, the heat spread became more bearable. I think it has something to do with the battery "setteling in".
4. Running apps that constantly check for updates and even push gmail, will cause your phone to run 1-2 degrees hotter and the more apps you add the hotter the phone will get at the resting state. Hence, when starting other apps it will get hotter and faster. even PowerControlPlus which is a very simple widget gets the deviec ~1 degree hotter on idle.
5. As the battery gets drained, it emits more heat. Try to charge your phones and not run battery draining apps when the battery is less than 30% or even 40% full.
I will comfort you all by telling you that I have a few friends with Galaxy S and Vibrants and their devices get hot too. A bit less on normal use like browsing but pretty much the same on 3D games and such.
I hope I helped because I was really frustrated by it for the first 2 weeks. I hope it will keep improving. I also purchased a case and hopefully it will help with the heat spreading around the phone - will update.
Please install Watchdog from the market to check if a process is acting crazy.
In my case it was 'Android media process' which ate 50% of all the processing power. There was not much of a performance drop since it occupied just one core.
Anyway Watchdog will give you an alert in case a process exceeds a certain percentage and from there you can google the problem or uninstall the app which is causing problems.
My Atrix 4G displayed a temperature of 37 degrees celsius. The highest till now I have seen. Could be higher though.
Its a dual core processor stop worrying about heat unless its hotter then 50c

My Atrix has reached temperatures of 70 Degrees Celcius...
@OP: I think ur safe.
how you turn off the push email? someone can indicate your configuration? thx

When watching youtube I reach 42 degrees celcius in the battery and it literally burns my hand. Would maybe return it if I hadn't ordered it from Canada.

thats because aluminium is a conducter which will let the heat out. plastic keeps it in. so if its hot i wonder why? xD

[email protected] keeping it in. Who knew one just needed a gnat's-hair-thick sheet of plastic to insulate their house?
I'm having the same issue, but it's only coming from the bottom half of my atrix, and only since I installed a new LCD. I'm actually worried the heat will destroy my mem card and sim.
I've ordered a new LCD now, so hopefully that'll sort it out.
It's probably just apps constantly eating cpu. My problem is with the laptop dock though. The battery in it gets way too hot. It's the first piece of electronics I've had that actually made me reflex my hand away from the heat.

I get constant 60 degrees while using...
I am a heavy user may go for hours at a time...Gaming mainly...
While heavy gaming I get aroud 75 to 80 degrees.. I bloody burns my hand to a point i cant even hold it anymore...!
Are you sure? 80 degree ? My PC only 72 degree. What have you done with your atrix

Running Hot?

My SG2 seems to run quite hot when doing pretty much anything that requires the screen to stay on, particularly the upper half of the device. I notice the screen itself is quite warm too but according to SetCPU the CPU doesn't go above 38-40 degrees.
Also, it might be my imagination but it doesn't seem to cool down until I do a reboot, suggesting it might be a running service.
Anyone else having a similar issue?
So no one has an issue with their device running hot?

Mine gets hot when i am gaming, or when its sat navving, but it cools down again once i stop doing whatever it was that was making it hot, but it does retain heat thus taking a while to cool.
The screen tends to get hot for me when i am using games/bright stuff, reading my book on there, black screen white text, it doesnt even get any warmer than it would from my hands.
The top gets warmer cos thats where the chips etc are (watch a teardown video, you will see the chips).
I've just noticed it getting quite a bit hotter than I would expect behind the camera (Not seen the breakdown, but I'm guessing thats where the CPU is) when I was playing a few games on it (Specifically Words with Friends and Angry Birds). Just wondering if this is normal in most peoples experience or if its going to burn the side of my leg off at some point?
It should be ok, i've gotten it to the point where touching the camera bit for extended periods of time would be very, very uncomfortable (think a hot, HOT bath) but that's only if you're doing something intensive, usually games.
Right, just been playing Gun Bros with it plugged into the charger, and not only did the battery drop while charging, but it was running at 50c and behind the camera is as hot as Sticks02 points out. Bit worrying really.
Mine still getting quite hot, and quite quickly when playing games. I notice the screen near the top is getting hot too, as well as the back near the camera. Anyone else's screen doing this?

I posted something similar on the modaco website lastweek.
1. Phone gets hot (top half only)
2. Then low battery warning message
3. finally complete shutdown of the phone
Now the phone tends switch of randomly and it's not even hot. I have the latest firmware installed.
Also I thought I'd mention that I did get the battery hot message once then the phone again shut down.
I think this is a software issue rather then hardware, time will tell.
Never had the phone switch off or the battery run down fast. Just the heat for me.

[Q] Anyone else's phone running hot?

I've been noticing a good amount of heat up by the camera during moderate use. I thought this was a CM7 problem since I had been on it since day 1, but I am now on UnNamed and the problem persists. After some googling it does seem that many other people are having this problem. Not on WIFI, and not in a poor signal area either. Just wanted to see if anyone had any leads as to the cause. What is a good app for monitoring CPU usage by app?
Yes, it may get a little hot but it isn't something to worry about as far as I know. I've gamed for three hours straight and not had any problems except for a low battery life!
yeah mine gets hot near the camera during use but i dont think its a problem
I use a battery monitor.
From what I've read, it will shut off for protection. I've heard that as long as it doesn't ever get too much above 130 F, you should be OK.
Now if it constantly stays high, there may be a problem. Mine stays around 80 F most of the time and the highest I've ever seen is 99 F but i don't game much or use my camera. One thing you don't wanna do is charge it while hd gaming or charge it in a hot car. My infuse reached 146 F one time doing that.

I only notice my battery gets hot when im charging while playing a game or sometimes watching a movie

Somehow 'Words with Friends' caused my phone to really warm up a lot. More so than I've seen with any other situation and on numerous occasions. Luckily I suck at that game and uninstalled it...
Mine is cool unless i put a thick case then itll burn up

When I first got CM7 running on this thing, I tore through the market installing the apps I'm used to. When I was finished, I noticed that it was indeed a bit warm in the area you described. It wasn't hot enough to cause discomfort, just warm enough to note.
I notice when my phone gets hot in that area when it is around 30% remaining and I charge it. I also notice that when it is charging, it really isn't charging but battery is draining. When I got home and charged it at 30%, I left it sitting there for about 30 minutes and when I checked the phone again, it was at 25%. GPS and wifi was turned off. I decided to power down the phone and remove the battery for 5 minutes. I started working fine after that. I noticed it getting hot again today when I plugged it in to charge at 40% but this time it actually was charging. I am running stock rom but rooted. Should this be a concern?
Seems as though a lot of people are having a variation of this problem. Hopefully it is addressed soon.
The CPU will always get a bit warm if it's running.
If it's getting very hot when the screen is off, you've probably got some background task wakelocking the phone.
My phone's screen gets pretty hot when I run web videos/flash videos on HSPA.
Runs a tiny bit warm when i'm running pristine 3D Tegra games on it...otherwise no.

[Q] Are high temps in car dock normal?

I have an upcoming coast-to-coast drive, and I was planning on using my HTC One in the car dock the whole trip as my primary GPS.
I got a nice universal-type car dock from iBolt, and the phone is in an Otter Box case.
I tested it on a shorter 3-4 hour trip, and I noticed the phone got very warm after a couple hours. And it stayed warm and the battery dropped very quick when I took it out of the charger. (down from 100% to 75% charge in 30 minutes).
Is there a problem with the charger or is this typical for car mode?
I did read that when I was researching temperature issues ,when my phone
Was running hot while I was steaming media.somone mentioned the car mode was making the phone really hot.

with any particular electronics/appliances heat is always your enemy ...it reduces the longevity of the battery (if the device has a built in battery), thereby reducing the overall life of the device ... elevated temperature is normal while charging the phone and using it for GPS, Media streaming etc, i.e. anything that requires the CPU to run close to its maximum clocking speed ...if the phone is hot and/or to the point where it starts effecting battery life immediately, and if you feel the hear throug the otterbox case, thats bad.... it is recommended usually to charge the phone without a case on to let the heat dissipate through the aluminum body....

I agree that the heat can be damaging, I'm just curious if this is typical for people who use the car docks for this phone. I haven't observed any heat issues during normal charging, and it only gets slightly warm during heavy use around the office and house.
Is the GPS and Google Maps really that intensive that it's forcing the CPU to full load all the time? I'd hate to damage my phone on this road trip. I would think my case would fall under "typical use" though, nothing extreme.
GPS is a real burner... If I am charging and using GPS, it does get quite hot. My old Atrix got so hot that the GPS starting malfunctioning after 3-4hours. (determined to be heat related after significant debugging)

Heat

Some phones are great to take camping because if you play Asphalt 8 long enough, the back warms up to the ideal temperature that can bake bread. Rate this thread to express the extent to which the Essential Phone stays cool under extended heavy use. A higher rating indicates that even when playing strenuous games for long periods of time, the phone doesn't get uncomfortably warm.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Have not experienced any heating at all
I am experiencing heating issues, I would like to know if it's just me and hopefully I just have a defective device. The battery Temp stays around 49 Celsius
My phone does get a little hot... Altho I was jus using Google duo which uses a lot of resources I believe... Not 100% if that's the case tho, and it cooled rather quickly after I ended the phone call...
I'm not experiencing any heat on the phone at all.

It gets pretty warm when I quick charge and use the phone at the same time but I think that goes for most of the phones out there
It won't get very hot. If the internal temp gets to 44C (112F) it aggressively throttles the big cluster down to about 1.2GHz, which is about half the maximum speed.
At 41C its down to 1.8GHz
At 40C its down to 2.1GHz
So in the span from 39C-43C (102F-109F) The performance drops by 50%.
A 4 degree C temperature span. This is the most aggressive throttling I've seen in any device I've owned.
I noticed this morning during charging the phone is getting too hot to touch around the upper right corner where the 360 camera attaches (which I don't have.)
no heat issues here yet.
Ya I am having some issues when I charge my phone and watch YouTube at the same time

Same here I feel it at times of heavy usage and charging
Accu battery says I'm around 107.4 F when I'm charging and using heavy. But that's the hottest it gets. I generally sit it next to a fan whenever I experience this. But it does nothing for internal temp which stays at 107.4 but the outside is cool to touch. And now that I think about it I may be wing about the temp. Not sure if it was 104.7 or 107.4. But that's besides the point.
Yes this phone does get hot at time of heavy gaming/ usage/ etc

I use Ampere, and put a 1x1 widget on the home screen. The widget shows the mA (+/-), battery status (charging/discharging), battery %, and battery temp.
No heat issues, not even playing Pokemon Go.
I ran my phone on battery with Waze on for 2 hours and the display turned off, made a few long phone calls along the way, the phone was very cool IMHO based on other phones I had that I would run Waze on. Only used about 25% of the battery in this 2 hour timeframe with Waze, phone calls, emails coming in and news alerts popping up occasionally. Then connect the phone to a cheap USB-C phone charger that is probably low current and drove another hour and the phone was still cool.
I have not checked temperatures, but from the handling of the phone, it clearly did not feel warm.
So far, so good IMHO.
heating issues with essential phone
having heat issues when I'm using as a hotspot for video. nothing of concern.
Never had any heat issues on 7.1 or 8.1
