I'm Chinese on mainland of China. Today I read a news about the so called "Android Window System ". First of all I just think it would be a ugly copycat of floating apps or something similar, but while I was watching the demo video I was totally shocked. It might be really a breakthrough for android tablet in my eyes. I don't know how many of you can read Chinese and can link to this video site due to China's Government Firewall, but if you can, you must have a look.

What you've shown is a Rockchip's device running Rockchip's version of the Android OS on 4.2.2 with the multi-window UI implemented.
This is not Android 4.3, 5.0, 6.0, or 9.0.

I didn't mention it is any official Android version. It's true that it is for Rockchip's devices and use Rockchip's own sdk. I just wanted to show you guys what these devices can actually do. Multiwindow may not be useful on phones, but I want it on my tablet, and I believe many nexus10 owners think the same.

N10 is capable of anything but unless someone that can do this, for free, it's just more eye-candy. Cornerstone was there but Google intervened, more or less, and we're back to square one. Devs can most definitely utilize cornerstone but they don't. Why is that? Google.

You may have heard that Mozilla are building their own mobile OS based on Firefox. To put it simply, if you've heard of ChromeOS, then it'll work in a similar way; the browser IS the OS.
What's interesting for us is that it's heavily based on android. Basically they've kept the HAL, hacked out Dalvik and anything java, and replaced it with Gecko. In theory any device that runs Android can run FirefoxOS.
It's still alpha software, it's supposed to eventually be compatible with ARMv6 devices, but as I found out while trying to build it for my LG Optimus One, Gecko is still hardcoded in many places to ARMv7. Their test devices include the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy SII, so special hardware isn't needed.
Therefore it should run fine on the Nexus 7 right?
Well, not quite. FirefoxOS is based on ICS, but Nexus 7 runs only Jellybean.
I've tried building with ICS sources and Jellybean sources, making the necessary changes to get it to build. However with Jellybean sources it doesn't get past the Google screen, and ADB loops without many error messages to analyse. With ICS sources ADB isn't even accessible, the kernel and/or the proprietary blobs are probably not compatible.
If anyone wants to take a look at my changes, they're at my github. Some of the changes to Gecko I got from this bug at Mozilla, but it's out of date and incomplete (there is a patch in the B2G repo).
Hopefully with more eyes looking at it, we'll get it working!

you will probably have to hack libs just to get it booting, you could try building ics first then after you have that running por tfirefox OS to it
I built it for the gnex but it was nowhere near usable, it has no onscreen button support which as we know is no good for us nexus users.
I reckon give it a few months before trying to do anything with it, its buggy and has no features as yet. The market is invitation only for registered developers, I couldn't get any signal on it even though they said that it was working. WiFi worked but not very well.

There was at least 2 cases of people who received Nexus 7 hardware with some dev version of ICS on it. Not sure if anyone has had any luck with getting that version of ICS up for download though.
There is no home button, assets are the wrong size, some screen resolutions are incorrect, wifi doesn't seem to manage to connect, but it launches, and the UI is pretty buttery smooth

It's building I'm gonna upload it when it's finished. I also managed to map the volume keys to the home button since no softkeys will work.

I know that this thread is really old, but I think we should try to build because they got it working on the Nexus 7 2013 and it supports touch gestures for closing applications.
Maybe I'll do it some time but I have to learn how to build first with building Firefox OS for my Galaxy Nexus. Maybe someone with more knowledge could try to build. It would be great!

I can't figure which area to post this- WP8 or Android since it has to do with both of them..
I figure since WP8 supports multiple cores up to 64 cores, and the Note 2 runs Android already, and they have a Samsung WP8 phone...
Maybe someone could come up with a way to have the Galaxy Note 2 dual boot the stock Android ROM, and WP8.
Is anyone working on something like this? That would be Something Else, because I like to look of Android but I also like the connectivity of WP8 with my W8 PC.
Just a thought...

You probably won't find much here on XDA since WP8 is copyrighted by Microsoft and licensed for the devices it comes stock on. The HD2 was the only device to run both since it came with windows mobile and Android was open source so it Legally could run both.
Though I'm sure it would be awesome to have both on the Note II, and may run on it also, I don't think XDA will allow it here. Sorry.

If you really wanted to find out more info, I'd search for Cotulla and his work, you can also find him on IRC, if it can be done, he'd know how to do it.
WP8 is a closed source like iOS. And it cannot be ported to another device.

This might just be the feature that pulls me away from AOKP for good. Windowed Multitasking is the one feature that I feel is crippling Android(and iOS for that matter) from rising as a serious competitor to traditional OSes(Windows, OS X, Ubuntu etc.). Anyone else excited for this?

Already running PA for tablet mode but this just gives me even more reason to stick with them. I was running it on my S3 too but didn't really like it over TW.
Yup, very much looking forward to this. If they pull it off, I'll be a PA man from here on out! From watching the video, their implementation looks much nicer than most too.
It will depend somewhat on what Google are up to though, I'd be amazed if Android 5 doesn't have some form of multi-window mode and should be out in 3-4 weeks...

And then 1-2 months of bugfixing in ROMs so it actually works ok
I asked about multitasking on PA thread for N10, and the answer wasn't far from what I think it might be the truth, seeing how is it going with the phones and tablets running PA ROM.

Interesting - I hope we get something like this. Another kick-ass developer timduru ported Cornerstone to EOS for the Asus Transformer TF101. It worked quite well. It certainly didn't make the TF101 any faster, but it was definitely something that I think improved the user experience on the tablet. I was able to watch video in one window and surf the net in another. :laugh:
For me, this was the most anticipated feature since I got my first Android tablet (which would be this one... :silly: ). Right now, I'm using the floating browser as a workaround, since the functionality of some apps can also be found on the web. - Except, of course, in offline situations.
I'm eagerly awaiting this, and I know that team PA can pull it off!
Pa just released a new video on Google +... it makes way more sense to me now... this will be rad with pie... Not sure how useful on the nexus 10 but awesome on my galaxy nexus... Can't wait

For phones I can see this feature being extremely innovative and useful but for the Nexus 10 it would make more sense to implement something similar to cornerstone or what Samsung has done. Mostly due to the fact that tablets have such large real estate that can be utilized with multiple windows up.
The idea is great for phones but I, personally, would prefer something similar to what I mentioned. However, something is better than nothing.

I heard rumors that google is still not working on Android 5.0 'key Lime Pie', and they will also not present it on Google I/O this month.
Apparently they will release a newer version of a Jelly bean ROM, Android 4.3, apperently with codename 'Android 4.3 JWR23B'.
Rumors told me that Google already tested Android 4.3 on a galaxy nexus 7 and nexus 4.
What my question is:
The Samsung galaxy tab10.1 had a timid start with android 4.2, it was laggy and it didn't respond at times, but it turned out to be one of the fastest ROM ever on my galaxy tab10.1 after hard and long work ( i'm flashing pershoot's ROM's (CyanogenMod) now since 11 months), thanks to pershoot.
Will there also be any chance to run a newer android version on this tablet after Android 4.2?
since there were doubts that android 4.2 would ever work on this tablet and turned out to be this smooth, it's giving me alot hope, what do you think?

I heard rumours about the last android version for dual core processor device is 4.2.2 to maintain the quality of later version (4.3++). Can't recall where I read it but if this true then the GT10.1 will stop at Jelly Bean 4.2.2. but, anything is possible..
On my 2nd thougt,if the above is true, this might be the opportunity to the level 17 API's developers and below to strengthen their apps stability, performance and thus give maximum performance to the devices. This might be a good news too.
I think if google upgrades it to android 4.3, most likely there will be bug fixes, like the strange back button It's supposed to bring us to the previous screen until we get to the home screen, but at times, it'll take you to places in apps you've never been, skips screens you've been too, it basically works only half of the time. and if i take a look on my parents's ipad, and if i rotate the screen, the transition is extremely smooth.
If i rotate my galaxy tab or my asus transformer it's kind of... Choppy... If i search the internet, the browser can't follow the speed of your finger on any device i've been on yet, maybe a little bit more browser responsiveness would be great, i'm not saying it isn't smooth yet, but it could be better!
And maybe they will work on more battery life? And if they're already working on it, maybe they should work on a new way to stay connected with people, what i mean is, don't use a stupid samsung app or asus vibe or whatever manufacturers use to connect to a social website, but make it a built-in app?? Like ubuntu does or WP8.

Sadly, Google Nexus 10 will not get the Translucent Navigation and Notification Bars with the Android 4.4.1 KitKat update, which allow the wallpaper to go full screen from top to bottom like in the Nexus 5.
Google devs Disabled the Translucent bars on Nexus 10 (Manta) because it "performs poorly on this device"... 2GB Ram and a powerful Quad-core Mali TS04 GPU and it performs poorly ?! May be because of the High-res display, I personally think it's a GPU issue.
I know not everyone cares about a the "Translucent bar" issue that can easily be reverted, but what I am trying to find out is a reasonable explanation from Google regarding this matter.
Manta source code includes the following code listed on [config.xml] which contains the device configurations, Screenshot below too.

That's crazy, I have transparent nav bar and status bar on my home screen thru PA. Idk what Google is doing, but the translucent bars work perfectly the way PA is doing it.
The way things have been going with android lately, I'm surprised we're getting kit kat at all. This is most likely my last nexus device, maybe even android.
The Google experience launcher also performs quite poorly on my n10 while it runs perfectly smooth on my n4.

I think it either the GPU or the Screen resolution 2560x1600 that cause the problem, but why ?
Actually, now that I think about it I have an alternate theory.
There's a very good chance I'm off base here, but on my Nexus 10 I've noticed that there are some very occasional graphical glitches ( back lights flickering, and horizontal lines) that have to do with things been overlaid on top of each other. Maybe the transparency was causing similar graphical glitches. That said, if that is the reason they decided to leave it out then Google really screwed up here. They need to fix the underlying problem, not just remove transparency from the status bar.

My N10 has never been "smooth" since the day I opened the box. Stock or custom roms, many different kernels and I still feel like I took a $500 dollar hit for a 350 dollar tablet. I am considering selling it

At least wait until KitKat, you never know what it might do to our tablet.
Also, isn't it weird that every other nexus device including the gnex already has a 4.4 ROM, whilst we still don't? I really want to try it out!

No date yet, the source is still a work in progress... but it doesn't look good for the manta so far! it's the only device that have this feature disabled without a reasonable explanation.
The final 4.4 hasn't even been released for the Nexus 10 yet guys, relax.
The Mali T604 is a bottleneck for the nexus 10.
It has the same memory bandwidth as ipad 3 & 4 12.8gbps but pushing almost 25% more pixels. On top of that android is not as GPU optimized.
While the t604 would be great at 720 and 1080p, 2560x1600 is maxing out the gpus capabilities.

Yeah, we're gonna have it thru PA anyways. But if that is official, I'm not too fond of Google's decisions lately. No transparent bars for us, no 4.4 (the version of android for older devices) on older Nexi.
Its VERY small things that really don't affect me personally, but y'know.

Ehhh... I think its fine. Aokp also has the transparent status bar and as someone else pointed out all you have to do is change one little line to true. It is a little worrying that theynsay it causes problems though. I hope Google doesn't slack on us. Anyways as people have mentioned the manta hasn't even been released officially yet so we can't be sure it won't change right?
