[Q] Need help on unrooting and updating - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have a few questions that I can't seem to get solid answers for online.
1st, When the new update is out 4.2.2 or maybe even 5.0, Will I need to unroot? I have seen online that I can maybe update via KIES and it will just update it and unroot itself but I don't know if I trust that.
2nd, If I need to unroot before updating, What is the best most layman's term tutorial I can follow?

IMHO its always best to unroot before accepting an official update.
Check the "sticky roll-up thread" at the top of general. If it's not layman enough for you, you haven't learned enough

Should do but don't rely on that being a clean method of unrooting. Unrooting is best if you flash a stock ROM using Odin. Kies updates are not complete ROMs so they can miss things you may have modified on your system
IMHO if you're rooted you shouldn't use KIES. But I'm not sure why anyone would want to anyway, when you can download any ROM as soon as it is released and flash it with Odin anyway. Or if rooted, just flash custom ROMS that are even better.
All depends what you want to get out of it.

[Q] which way to root

Hi I was just interested in which way is best to root my device and why.
I broke my last galaxy s2 doing it via odin as I was unable to unroot it.
This time I have done it the superoneclick way and unrooted via ginger unroot app.
Yes I'm a noob and someone if any one answer will have a pop about which thread I should've gone to, but looking around for the last hour has shown bugger all.
I could'nt for some reason unroot with odin and am baffled why.
Any help would be appreciated
Regards Shaun
Root using one of the many root kernels.
Unroot by flashing a stock ROM from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Easiest way just flash CF Root via Odin. Job done simples.
Yes, I'm going to have a "quick pop". Initial search of Q&A forum turned up very similar questions, this is where you should have posted instead of creating a new one?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?searchid=8243020
Answers are above, including the link with guides.
Hi I did this the first time via odin, but was unable to unroot.
I used an insecure kernal and had the original kernal but when I flashed the original kernal back it was still rooted.
So this may be a silly question but why do I need to flash a rom as some people seem to suggest?
Sorry to sound thick ( I am I guess ) but so much info has really baffled me.
I thought you downloaded an insecure kernal and flashed via odin and that was it, rooted, then if you want to unroot you flash the original kernal, use usb jig and job was done.
Or am I way off lol
Again sorry if I am that bad
Regards Shaun
If you flash back stock firmware, busybox and superuser are removed, so you won't have root access. Also stock kernel as part of the package will instal stock recovery.

The actual rooting process changes (adds) things to the system, that's why you need to flash a "clean" one to unroot.
The unsecure kernels only provide the means to perform the root, they don't do the actual root.
Kernels like CF-Root or mine (see sig) do perform the actual root on boot, but as said above, it involves adding things to the original system.
First and foremost, thank you all for your info it is much appreciated and I mean that.
But I am totally lost and still have a screwed of G2 in the drawer.
I have followed advice to the T and some how I am no better off.
I mean what has firmware and roms got to do with rooting or unrooting.
I just want to get to grips with rooting before flashing firmware or at least someone to say what I did wrong.
On my new G2 I did it via superoneclick is that wrong?

How screwed?
What does it still do and what doesn't it? Can it maybe still go to donwload mode (VOLDOWN+HOME+POWER when off)?
it keeps coming up with force closeandroid.com and has lost its signal for 3g.

Thats usually in most cases not following the relevant instructions .
This method works but if you cannot understand it then leave your phone unrooted and start reading the Guides and FAQS .
Root + CWM .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Basics are choose your kernel flash through Odin phone is now rooted .
Ignore the yellow triangle or just buy a USB recovery jig to remove it .

Just re-flash official firmware from Intratech's thread [ROM+Guide]Official i9100 Firmwares KG, KH, KI, KJ, KK1/2/5, KL1/2/3, LA2 Download (mentioned in an earlier post).
Follow his instructions exactly, and you shouldn't go wrong
After you've further researched and read, follow the above mentioned rooting methods to the letter. Done

Flash a fresh/clean ROM like suggested in this thread, that should most definitaly fix that phone and get it back to fully working state.
So just before I do this flashing the firmware, just to make sure you understand!
I do the flashing the firmware as if I was flashing the kernal?
Also I'm on 2.3.4 will it stay as that or will I have to use another firmware for that?
Again sorry if I am getting this wrong and thank you for your patience
Get a USB jig.
Flash your stock rom of choice from the intratech thread.
Flash speedmod kernel or whichever you want to gain root.
PS. You shouldn't be flashing anything if you don't know what your doing.....

The intention is to get the phone in a working state, so you can just about flash any official firmware you like. Your Android version will also upgrade if you flash a newer package.
Good reports about XILA2. May have a few Italian apps on it, you may wish to keep them or uninstall later. You may have to flash a seperate CSC later, or just manually enter your APN.
Follow Intratech's instructions and go for it!

It seems you are confused. Or are you just struggling to read english? What one do you see that is rooted?
The ones you have been directed to (stickied at the top of the General section, linked above by pier10) are the same one, (but are hosted on different download sites) and it is NOT rooted, but both pages have instructions on how to root if you want. If you don't want root, just ignore the rooting instructions.
As far as Kies, it will update only if you are still on an official stock Samsung firmware, with the correct CSC for your country. If you haven't flashed any firmwares yourself yet, this is a good bet. But you will have to wait until Samsung updates their servers for your region to say your phone is eligible for an update.

Need MOAR reading!!!
Do not upgrade via kies. It will give you at&t's version of ics which contains the emmc bug that places your phone at risk of being bricked if you need to do a factory reset/wipe. Since you are already rooted you can just go straight to any of the great ics roms on the development forum.
In terms of how to get there, i agree with the previous poster, you have lots of reading to do. Start with the stickies in the forum. In particular, this thread by creepyncrawly is a great place to start reading:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311081
Don't flash until you have read thoroughly and really understand what you are about to do.

To the op---there is no reason to post a new thread about this. Countless have already been made. Use the search function and Google with your search followed by "i777 xda" in the search string, for future reference.

[Q] Update to Jellybean

Hello,
I want this to be a personal question about how to update my phone to Jellybean 4.1
First of all, as u can all see in the screenshot, I don't have software update in my phone,it's a branded Orange phone.
Over Kies my phone is not connecting to it. I have done a ton of solutions, no succes.
So I came here to ask you how can I update my Samsung Galaxy S3 to Jellybean with Odin starting from my screenshot, I mean from baseband i9300bvle4 w/o damaging my phone.
Please, give me some steps like you make for newbies.
Best Regards,
Go grab the latest stock JB from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610. Then use odin to flash, follow one of the many, many guides on using odin. Once youve downloaded the FW its a 10 min job.

[Q] Android version

Hey guys ! Today I got my International GT-I9300 and I have android 4.1.2 on it. My question is that is there any newer version from Samsung since I don't want to void my warranty by flashing a custom rom. If there is one how do I update it and if isn't any new one are the dates know when Samsung will give them out ?

no, there isnt, sorry. If you wait a while they may release a 4.2 (or maybe 4.3) touchwiz rom, but for now you have 2 options, use that rom, or use a custom rom.
There is really nothing to worry about with flashing roms, just make sure you make a nandroid backup beforehand, the only way to truly brick your phone is to be extremely stupid and flash a rom or kernel meant for a different device.
If you need to bring your phone in, just restore the nandroid backup and reset the flash counter.
Hmm, that's some weird advise you've given there.
Anyway, 4.3 official Samsung rom has been out for a few days now -head over to general forum to read the stickies on how to use odin and the official firmware thread to download the file.
You can hard brick your phone simply by ticking the wrong box in odin, so be very careful and follow the instructions exactly.

really, samsung kies doesnt have it, well at least where i live.
well that is true that you can tick the wrong box and brick, but, like flashing the wrong file, you'd have to be stupid when all the tutorials say that it bricks your device.
Simply .4.3 is rolling out officially at some stage you will get the update via Kies or OTA .
At XDA we have a couple of 4.3 firmwares that can be flashed .
But that would require you to read the faqs and guides first .
Plus the updates really have to many problems to bother with wait for later versions .

Okay, I see where you were coming from now. I've never even installed kies so wouldn't know how up to date it is. You would be surprised at just how many stupid people arrive here per day after bricking their phone.

Neat rom lite 4.3 is working very well for what I need, no bugs at all (apart from the wake delay, but it's always done that to some extent).
I agree with JJEgan 4.3 update is rolling out but it is.... well how can I put this nicely the "update is not what we expected" because you don't want to root and flash custom roms I suggest you wait and read up about the new "update" if that's what it isBut at the end of the day it is your device and if you do go down the custom rom route read read read!
I have the I9300XXEMG4. So can I use this guide to get to 4.3 ? BTW the guy at 9:32 the guy says that by flashing the firmware his counter didn't go up is that true ?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rs_sg7UxpoE
4.3 is due to roll out for the international s3 anytime now depending on your carrier, I wouldn't go through the trouble of flashing firmware if you dont know what you're doing , I am due 4.3 in a couple weeks according to three
