How to turn on OTG - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I bought an OTG cable(cheap one, not the genuine), and I tried to plug a USB flash drive ,and a USB mouse, and a USB keyboard, but nothing happens.
Do I need to turn it on somewhere? because I didn't find an option to do so.
Also, I have problems with the micro-USB port itself, so far, only 1 charger is charging my galaxy s3, I don't know why, but other chargers do nothing when I plug them to my galaxy s3, but only the particular charger I grabbed from my tablet.
So, what is the problem? the OTG cable, the micro usb port, or I simply need to activate OTG somehow?
Thanks

Btw, where I work, there is a lab that replaces electronic components from PCB's, so I was thinking of buying a replacement charging port and maybe they can solder it (I've seen how they do it, it's a matter of seconds-minutes), but I remember that the galaxy s3 has different pins somewhere, I remember it has 11 pins compared to 5 pins (am I right?) so will I need a different micro-usb port for the galaxy s3 right? (or the 11 pins are somewhere else?)

Wrong thread, moderator please delete this post.

[Q] i777 att phone PLEASE is the OTG option

Hi i brought an otg cable for my phone however when i plug it in the cable is not showing up as usb host on notification bar like some youtube videos that show that. I just want to plug in a small usb flash drive that does not need power to boot up. I can't find a way to make the phone recognize the cable. I running ics by SHOstock v2.2.6. thank you for any help. Also did numerous searches on google and here with no results on getting this thing to work.
Have you tried toggling on/off usb debugging?
My OTG cable works fine. The odds are either your cable is not true USB OTG cable (it must short out one of the PIN at the microUSB connector side) or the custom ROM you are runing does not have USB OTG support. I'm running leaked UCLD3 ROM.
What??? There is an OTG cable? For real?
I got the regular male-microUSB to female-standardUSB cable and it works just fine with AOKP

Yes there is. IIRC, the PIN5 must be shorted to ground on the microUSB port on the cable to trigger the phone into USB host mode. AOKP ROM might be created to ignore suck requirement but that's not how USB OTG works.
Well I brought the cable 2 days ago off eBay and I send an email to the vendor and he's sending me another one I hope it works for me. If not I was planning to buy the official brand name Samsung one on Amazon and I hope it works with that.

Nope. Generic adapters usually don't work. You need a specially made cable with proper PINs shorted.
This is the one I bought http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005QX7KYU/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
Thank you so much I'm going to try the second because after noticing the Motorola one on the list didn't work I think fox is right thank you all for all your help.
Do you now of an HDMI adapter that would work
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
I don't own any MHL adapter (HDMI adapter). But it should be standard as long as you properly supply power to the adapter externally.
I've had the official Samsung MHL adapter since the phone came out and it still works flawlessly. There pretty cheap now you can find one for about 22$. Or you could try a generic but some people love em some people throw em in the garbage

Some of them are made pretty badly which causes some odd issues.

[Q] USB OTG works well with ICS, HOWEVER...

However, is there any way possible to charge your phone WHILE using the OTG adapter? They both use the 1 micro port on my phone, but I need to find a way to charge the phone while using the OTG adapter.....perhaps a micro USB splitter-type adapter?????
I was actually wondering about this myself, though I don't think a splitter-type cable would work. I'm wondering if the power connection is on separate pins than the data, though...if they don't share space then I'd think it would be possible in some fashion.

A similar problem is showing up regarding using the mhl port to output to hdmi. Though the original information indicated that the power cable was supposed to charge the phone it seems it does not on the first version (super DUMB).
I have read though that the newer version of the mhl port is 10 (I think) pins rather than the 5 of the original. The newer port DOES allow charging while output is in operation.
I suspect this will also allow an OTG cable that charges while in use.
I am not so sure about the mhl idea anymore. Only one port for everything is ok if it has enough pins/bandwidth to have a breakout box that would allow an external usb drive to be read while hdmi is being output to a screen and power is supplied to the phone. As it is now with only one-at-a-time it isn't very inspiring as the phones get closer to the power of laptops.
What would be really neat would be a box with wi-fi, and the output to hdmi and usb ports as well. A wireless breakout box. Then the charger could be over by the phone which is near the user.

[Q] MHL cable and OTG cable

If you connect the MHL cable to the device and the OTG cable to the MHL cable the device can't detect the OTG cable.
How can I make this work? I've seen videos in youtube that they connect their device to the TV at the same they have USB bluetooth mouse and keyboard connected.
Anyone tried using MHL cable and OTG cable at the same time?

According to some of wikipedia entries it should be possible to use mhl and usb otg at the same time with a 11-pin mhl-hdmi adapter.
Wikipedia said:
11-pin MHL-USB Connector
The Samsung Galaxy S III uses a connector that is similar to the original 5-pin MHL-USB connector, but it uses 11-pins in order to achieve a few functional improvements over the 5-pin design.
It supports the use of USB and MHL simultaneously (note that the new Samsung 11-pin MHL-HDMI adapter also has a USB-OTG port).
Samsung’s Galaxy S III can power the MHL-HDMI adapter. Although this can theoretically also be done with the standard 5-pin micro-USB connector, the Galaxy S III's 11-pin connector is believed to be the first smartphone that supports this functionality.

Here you go.
So, it should work. But I couldnt make it work at the moment
I also got one of these 11-pin connectors and like it seems only the S3 has these adapters, so why the **** doesnt it work?? :/
I already asked sammy on facebook, just wondering what they will answer^^
Hopefully we will have some pos. results, dude.
cheers

How would that work since the micro USB connection on the mhl cable is for power / charger?
In those YouTube videos is it possible that they have the mhl cable connected to the TV and power source, and the keyboard and mouse connected wirelessly via Bluetooth?
Confused because you said USB Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. From what I know they aren't USB.

Samsung should eventually release a dock to use both so unless someone figures it out first you'll just have to wait, because if it just took an 11 pin USB cable someone would have got it working already and we'd know about it, so I reckon it might have some extra circuitry to make it recognised by the phone.
Guys, as I already posted, the connector has 11 pins, so it should be possible to use OTG and MHL features at the same time. thats the only reason sammy brought out this connector and also cause of incompability with the 5-pin connector.
So they should bring the f*ck out somethin for the phone that activates this feature.
And a big problem I have with my mhl-connector is that I cant configure the output
on my 2 TVs at home I get 1080i, (both only 1080i capable), but the picture is kinda oversized so I cant see 100% percent of the picture, only 90% or smt like this.
But the funny part is, that I get on my 1680x1050p PC monitor only 576p screen, what actually sucks So it would be awesome if I could choose the resolution I want to have. But I guess its a thing of the connector (maybe it choose the resolutions iself).
cheers
so the one in the videos using keyboard and mouse are bluetooth thru phone?

They should do iut fast. I'm waiting so hard for everything get connected with my Phone. It will be awsome if I don't need my Pc anymore.
To use the MHL cable you must have power connected to the adapter.

That's damn funny because I have wanted to know whether that would work as well, lol.
Did seriously consider trying but as I was on holiday if they broke, I wouldn't be able to get replacement so didn't try it.
In theory I would think it could work, but only if you could somehow wire in power to the hdmi adapter as it appears to need that to run the hdmi aswell as provide power to the phone, at least enough that once the usb adapter tries to demand power to run it isn't enough for the phone to output.
As to whether this is just a a stupid guess and assumption of how the devices and being a noob, I don't know.
If you can get a micro female to male adapter with a usb splitter for power then technically I can't see why it wouldn't work if the limitations are physical as oppose to software based (whole other issue I have no clue about).
EDIT: Wow, when I started that post no one had replied, err, seems a little redundant now, lol. My bad. Also, this 5 minute wait to point this out, have seemed really long...
guess we'll have to wait for that dock.

[Q] My galaxy s2 isn't charging

Hi everyone, i' ve be en looking an answer to my problem from a long time i've looked in almost every related post, but nothing...
When i plug in my phone (to a wall charger or to a pc with ye USB cable) the phone says "charging" but you can leave it liket thar for hours
and nothing happens, i have tried a lot of things :
-make sure the charger is good
-coneccting with diferent cables
-change the rom and kernel (a lot of times)
-even i replace the USB port
But nothing of that seems to work... Have anyone an idea of what culd be the problem?
Thanks a lot
I had a similar problem where I plugged my phone in and it said charging but after half an hour I'd lost 1% I changed to an iPhone plug and the supplied USB cable and this has solved the problem for me (I looked at the micro USB end of the plug and USB and one of the pins in the micro USB was missing from the plug) However you said changed cables and plugs so don't know however issue sounds similar

How on earth are u going to use ipone cable to charge yr sgs2. what he meant is the charger not the cable. Since u ve use different charger and cable and even replacing the usb port, i think its the board issue which means u may ve to replace the main board. Only thing u can do is get a desktop chargerand another spare battery.

Im sorry I meant IPhone plug not the cable, actually I have what you say a spare battery, but I want to fix the problem anyway
Try putting your battery on another sii. See if it charges then.
You can also use a dock or charge it manually.

USB cable does not work for data transfers (charges ok)

Just got the Nexus 9 a couple of days ago, charged it, but when I connected it to the computer, nothing, it's not detected at all. Tried both a Mac and Windows laptop.
I tried a different cable and it works fine with that, just not with the stock HTC cable.
What's going on here? Busted cable? I assume it's not a charge only cable, that wouldn't make much sense. Could it be that the cable doesn't like the USB3 ports?
are yo on modified kernel with fast charge enabled? if so, please disable it.

No, just stock rooted. As I said, other cables work fine, but not the stock HTC cable, so it is the cable, not the tablet or the computers/drivers, etc.
ahh I'm sorry i missed that. anyway, surely it was a faulty cable.

I'm more curious if anyone else has run into something similar, incompatibilities between a cable and a USB3 port.

Just in case you haven't tried this...When connected to your computer, tap on the USB notification on your Nexus. You will then get more options, one of which is "Transfer Files".

I know. It makes no difference, the tablet simply doesn't show up. As I said above, I know how to use other cables and they work And yes, not a fan that M defaults to charging only every time and have to manually put it in MTP mode.

No luck needed, just a different 99c cable
Just to bring closure to this thread, I contacted HTC and they finally sent me a replacement charger and cable even though I only asked for the cable (not because I didn't already have a pile of USB cables around but because I was curious whether there was something wrong with the HTC cable I received with my N9 or just an incompatibility). The new cable I received works fine for both data and charging. So the cable that came in the box was bad. But to my surprise the new charger I got also works much better, it chargers faster (I have a USB dongle that I can measure the charging current with). The original charger was capable to only charge the N9 but not other devices which I found weird.
So something went really wrong with the included charger and cable. How can it be that you have both a bad charger and cable in the same box? I can see one being bad, but both? Makes me wonder what I should expect from the tablet itself ... Doesn't look like quality is top priority at HTC, no wonder the company is not doing well at all.
