Kept root after the update, but... - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hi guys I am new here and just wantrd so advice. After the recent update I was able to keep root and I have been trying to install twrp via goo manager and it goes into odin mode whenever I reboot to recover. Goo downloads the file and says it was successful, but like I said when in reboot it only goes to odin mode. Any help would be fantastic. Thanks!

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do. The reason you cannot boot into twrp is because you CANNOT install a custom recovery on the new ME7 update. Even with root, if you search, you will see this covered plenty already.
You are now stuck with the stock rom.

I had read quite a bit but from what I'd read people were all losing root and bootloader was becoming locked. Oh well, thanks for the info. May shoot over and throw in on the bounty to get this thing fully unlocked again.

I had an issue kinda similar like this and ended up having to flash the RUU through the bootloader. It is the stock firmware 605.19, and I had to reroot. It's a pain I know but it works

I to had to this at one point and it does work. I would first try to flash cwm in fastboot though. Sometimes that works.

My friend's phone tried to pull an OTA while he had CWM recovery installed, and it started boot looping. Had to download the stock recovery, name is PG05IMG.zip in the root of the SDCard, and force the phone to boot to the bootloader and install it. Once it did, the phone started up, rebooted itself, and installed the OTA fine. Sounds like yours may be trying to do something similar?
If so rooted phones need caches cleared for the ota to work.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
From my understanding, Rooted can still take OTA, but you have to have stock recovery to do it (as I witnessed earlier). You will lose root, and will have to re-flash recovery to TWRP, CWMR, or whatever your normal choice is, and then re-apply the su.zip, but otherwise easy as pie.

Hello, first of all I would like to thank everyone who has posted in this thread to try and help out. I just started having a very similar problem- I'm rooted and running stock, but apparently my phone accepted an OTA and I'm stuck in a bootloop as well.
I got into CWM recovery and downloaded the stock recovery PG05IMG.zip, but it won't install. It just aborts every time I try to install it. I'm a noob at this stuff and not very good at dealing with these sorts of things and I've been having a panic attack for the past hour, so if anyone could help me as soon as possible I would really appreciate it.
I'm really scared of making things worse than they already are. I just want a working phone.

pull battery, wait a minute, turn on phone
when in bootloader screen,
volume down, select reboot
back to white screen, select recovery ( i had to do this twice)
hold volume up and power when black screen appears
choose the bottom option (wipe cache i believe)
choose reboot
phone should be good aftter this
( idont own a thunderbolt, but i had to fix this for a nother phone, called tech support and this worked)
hope this helps - hopefully saves someone from ruu'ing and wiping their phone

The zip won't work in CWM because it's not designed for use with CWM. It's designed for use in Fastboot. Should be on the root of your sd card. From off, if I'm correct (like this with other HTC devices), hold volume down and power to boot into fastboot. This will allow it to flash the stock recovery.

Right. I also have a recovery zip that installs the stock recovery if anyone wants it?
It can be found here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/61129367/OTARestoreAndRecovery.zip
(warning: I have tested it and it works but it did cause me a bootloop, and im assuming this is becuase im on a different rom - - - so not responsible for any damages)

Downloading...Do not turn off target!! Stuck after installing TWRP via Goo Manager

I just rooted a Verizon GS4 (VRUAME7) using this method. Everything went fine. I verified root with Root Checker, rebooted the phone, checked again.
Then I followed this method to install TWRP. When I rebooted the device as instructed, it got stuck on a splashscreen that has and Android logo and says "Downloading...Do not turn off target!!" :'(
The upper left in red says "Could not do normal boot. ODIN MODE"
I tried a battery pull, vol dwn + power, vol up + power and vol down + up + power.
How do I get back to normal boot or into TWRP recovery? I have a ROM I'd like to install, and as of now...it won't get past that splash screen.
What do I do?
Thanks!
First off youre in the wrong section. Questions go in the Q and A section. Second your on the me7 ota and you cant install a custom recovery/roms on the me7 ota. To get your phone booting again you will have to flash the stock recovery (not sure if someone has posted a stock recovery flashable via odin as I havent looked)or flash me7 again.

This worked perfectly.
Hopefully it'll won't fall back into that. Can't wait until I can ROM this sucker. Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag.
Since you have the update, boot the phone up in Odin mode and plug in your USB cable.
If you installed the desktop software you will have a Verizon folder in your start menu.
In that folder there should be an app "Verizon Software Upgrade Utility"
Run that and it should tell you you are up to date.
There is a repair utility within that app, run that and it should fix your problem.
It takes a while because it downloads the rom and then flashes it.
No guarantees, but I believe that will get you back to stock unrooted.
Sent from a Galaxy S4... Far far away
Sounds like he just got into download mode and didn't recognize it, and his rom, recovery, and everything was untouched.
To the OP, you're probably good if your phone has booted normally, works fine, and you're still rooted. You can't flash any roms or mods, but you can still apply some mods by simply pushing them to your /system partition, setting permissions, and rebooting. Either follow the instructions for which directory to put the file/files in, or you can open up a flashable zip and use the same path as the directories in the zip.
You should even be able to push a modded framework-res.apk and SystemUI.apk and rename the old ones, once people start building ME7 roms, though I can't guarantee it'll work. All you can do is try, and now you know how to get into Download mode to use Odin if it doesn't work.
As far as plain lag goes, just freeze alot of the bloat, there's around 50 apks (in MDK, anyway) that aren't doing anyone any good. Then grab a cpu app like Trickster Mod and see what, if any, parameters the stock kernel enables you to change. If you can set the Interactive cpu governor, Deadline scheduler, Performance gpu governor, and increase the read-ahead size, you should see a significant improvement.

Safestrap doesn't root, so there's things that you've done that you're not telling us. How did you root your phone? What else did you do after you rooted?
The "firmware detected issues" usually means that you tried to flash recovery, custom kernel, etc. Did you try to flash custom recovery?

I don't really know what's going on here as you're a little confusing but figured I'd chime in here..
If you were on mk2 then you should just rooted the phone using SafeRoot, very easy and reliable and Safe!
Then you should have installed SafeStrap by simply downloading the. Apk file from that thread. Boooom you'd be all set and ready to flash.
None of that requires Odin. Unless I missed the post where you said you were trying to Odin back for a fresh start??!!

Stuck in NAB I Want Out!

Hey guys. So thanks to Micmars I was able to break myself out of a terrible boot loop. The only real solution at the time was to use an exe file to push me into the NAB update. My goal was to then to go ahead and push a custom recovery and use SuperSU to root the device, followed by installing NABD. Problem is that it seems that the current stock recovery is unable to flash any of these updates. The broken android comes up when I enter stock recovery. Flashing a custom recovery fails as well.
Here are my goals:
1. Root
2. Flash TWRP
3. Install one of the latest and greatest custom ROM.
I need your help fellas. Any help is greatly appreciated and big shutout to Micmars for saving me from bricking my phone.

Now which recovery are you referring to? Is it the stock? I have tried multiple times with Odin to flash the stock recovery but it won't because it already has the NAB recovery installed and its not letting it do anything else because its saying that the operating system has been modified. so it's basically trying to box with me a bit.

To Start,
1. Remove any cases from phone.
2. Put Chainfire latest superuser on your phone,

3. Put TWRP 2.7.0.0 for TouchWiz KitKat on your PC,

4. Using PC Odin (3.07 is fine), flash TWRP,
https://www.dropbox.com/s/z2n10tjzmxlhaz4/Odin3 v3.07.zip
[Unzip to your PC, run Odin as administrator, shut down your phone, put phone in download mode (volume down + home + power, then volume up to confirm), load TWRP tar into PDA slot, plug phone into PC using same USB port as one you've used before, keep automatically restart checked in Odin, hold phone in palm of your hand, get ready to hold volume up + home, hit start on PC Odin, hit start on PC Odin, when file finishes flashing, hit those buttons quickly, since the recovery file flashes in like 5-10 seconds, your now in recovery.]
5. Inject root,
Tap install from the TWRP, navigate to the location on your phone you put that superuser file, flick the knob, reboot.
You are now rooted with custom recovery.
From here, the world is your own. Lots of roms from which to choose, I recommend looking around the dev forums, you'll find something that's right for you. Might want to start with a TouchWiz rom, just because they are built from stock and they'll function as you'd expect. Try AOSP if you like, but those roms tend to take a bit more diligence on your end. No problem with that, but this will get you started with the least effort.
I hope this helps.
Good luck!

So NAB is stock essentially? Why am I constantly having warnings of modification and app crashes constantly.
Further the current recovery is broken. You know, the beat up droid on the ground. It won't allow me to install root. Is it possible I need an older root request?

not have this message. I am I correct?

Dude, those are standard Knox notifications. If you have successfully rooted your device, just get rid of the damn things. Install freeza's Knox-free Stockish DeOdex or Odex NABD rom and be done with it.

That's just the problem. The stock recovery seems to be broken and I can not actively flash TWRP to the device neither clockworkmod. That's why I'm having the current problem. I can't do anything without having root obviously.

My friend, I'm at a loss. There's really nothing I can go at this point. Broken stock recovery makes no sense to me, but that doesn't mean it's not possible.
Flashing working recovery that is custom would replace a stock recovery, working or not. At least one could speculate.
You obviously need to install root.
Go hit the qbking77 video on rooting this device and follow the instructions.

no recovery

Hey guys, I recently got a replacement device from best buy because my old ones screen broke. I successfully rooted the new device using the towelroot method. I just tried to install the loki recovery via goomanager and when I rebooted it just boots into odin mode and says that it "could not do normal boot." I've tried everything I can think of but cant get it to boot. Any help?

Have actually research what firmware you have and what recovery can be used. You do know that unless you have mdk...you can't use goomanger or twrp or Cwm right?

I believe you are going to have to go with SafeStrap 3.72. You don't have an unlocked bootloader but Safestrap isn't bad. You can still install some really good roms
The problem is that I can't boot my phone now. It just boots into Odin mode. When I got my phone originally it wasn't mdk so I didn't have to deal with safestrap. So I didn't know there was other options.

if you can get into download mode and have Odin, flash a full wipe or a no wipe tar and start over.
