Why are you updating? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Anybody here feel confused with some of the users that are updating to the latest locked down firmware, I just find it weird that people are knowingly locking down their phones, the main reason people come here is to do the opposite. I've read people apply the update and they still ask for some sort of support from community members. I just dont get it.

I read some saying they didn't care and after some did the update they said the phone was faster and worth losing root. Others just want root and were able to update using voodoo ota rootkeeper. To keep root and update.
Sent from my VZW Galaxy S4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

They kept root in a sense. Yes, they can still run some apps that require root, but they cannot flash a custom kernel or recovery.

I traded my note 2 and got this. Met the guy at Verizon. Got the prompt for the OTA and took it before I knew what was good for me. Although I would have preferred not to, I am very impressed with the stock firmware.
Only disappointment which would make me want to root is WiFi tethering doesn't work in Pdanet, and of course the annoying WiFi toggle - both things I'm content dealing with without pulling hair out while I wait for the new exploit.

I've noticed a few of the update fans haven't posted in here for awhile. Possible a good thing for the community.

I think they can tweak the Root method for the international Note once they get a system dump from an ATT Note. I don't think it's a big stretch.

I have the international version, rom LA4. I screwed up and updated with KIES from the previous rom to LA4 and lost root. To get it back, I'd have to downgrade (wipe), root, then update OTA to get it back. The exploit used for the older rom won't work on the newer. Not sure if they will figure it out, I think they would rather spend their time tinkering with ICS (can't blame em). Make sure one the at&t version can be hacked, that you watch how you update it. First time I've had a non rooted phone for 9 months, the ads are about to drive me nuts
I'm sure when ICS hits, it will be full of exploits to root it until Sammy figures out where the holes are located and plugs them up.
More then likely we can root with Skyrocket's version.

Now that I'm rooted...

I know I'm a pain, but I have a few more questions. I'm unable to find the answers that are specific to this device.
I've decided that (at least for now) I'll be keeping the stock ROM that is currently on this phone. I have yet to look at all of the other great ROMs and decide which ones I'd like, and I will eventually do that, but not today.
One of these days, Verizon will be pushing an OTA update. I don't want to lose my root, but if I'm keeping JB, I want the update. Will Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper work on this phone?
Will I get the OTA with a fully debloated device?
What apps do you recommend for a rooted device other than Titanium backup?
As always, any and all help is much appreciated.
If you're debloating the stock rom (using TiBu to remove apps), your phone most likely wont update properly. OTA Root Keeper should work. This phone hasn't had a update so no one can confirm any of this.
Your best bet is to flash a stock based rom (Clean Rom or something similar) and whenever we get an update, the rom developers will update the rom.

I backed up using twrp to my sd card. I apparently didn't have enough space on the phone, so I did sd. Is that enough or do I need to backup onto my phone as well?

When an OTA finally rolls out, you will receive a notification. It's not going to force you to update. Then to get rid of the notification, you just need to change a few lines in the build.prop to the newest build number.

My wife's Note 2 was stock w/ root and recovery. Sometimes in the mornings her phone would be in TWRP from where it had downloaded the OTA and attempted to install it. I imagine the S4 will be the same way.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Xparent Green Tapatalk 2
Just read in the root thread that the OTA updates your bootloader and prevents you from flashing the old kernel to root again. BEWARE - Do not update if you plan to keep root.

If I were to get this update without unrooting first, would I get in trouble/lose warranty with this update?

You'll only ever get in trouble/lose warranty if you return a rooted/modded phone. Research Odin and download a stock Odin image. If you ever need to return your phone, just flash that first and you're good to go.
Also look into an app called Triangle Away. I haven't checked this phone ik download mode yet to see if I've tripped the flash counter but Triangle Away is an invaluable app for resetting it (requires root on a stock rom).

Make the Jump!
To be completely straightforward -- you probably really don't want the new update. From what I've been hearing around the boards, it doesn't really provide any new important (at least not in my eyes) functionality to the device. If anything, it's mostly just a patch for holes that they unintentionally left. Those holes are what allow you to root the device so easily.
You're doing the same thing I did, by the way -- I hung on to the stock ROM for quite some time, and was a little worried to separate. However, I highly recommend just making the jump and going with HyperDrive. It's on release 5.7 at this point, and I've been using it as a daily driver for a few days now. I'ts really solid, you get all of your stock capabilities and functions plus MORE customization. Pretty cool, and much better than whatever Verizon will eventually push out in my opinion.
Good luck with whatever you choose!
I did decide to unroot for now, and go with the update. Sooner or later, after a good root method comes out, I will likely root again. Mostly, I just wanted to see what this update was all about. It's both good and underwhelming. It's good because the phone doesn't lag like it used to, but otherwise underwhelming.
Thank you, everyone, for your help. I'll definitely stick around on the forums. I really like the community here.
A rom would have fixed that lag.

MDK, ME7 or MI1 which are you on

MDK. Stock Rooted.
ME7 stock rooted. Kicking myself for waiting so long and missing out on easily obtaining an MDK. Not willing to pull warranty fraud or anything like that either.
This is what I thought was happening. We have a pretty even mix of people on 3 different versions on this phone. The forum here has been dead lately and I think this is the reason. It's unfortunate Samsung gave in to Verizon..... That or the possibility of gaining a government contract was too much for Samsung to turn down. The situation bums me out. I enjoy reading the forums and the lack of activity is disappointing.... However the news of 4.3 seems to have resparked some interest which is encouraging.

Me7 stock but thinking of taking the update. Haven't had time to root. The only reason I have not taken the update is I am hearing issues with the battery life is this as much of a problem or is it just a few?

The real question is do you need this update? Unless you're in a low LTE reception area there's really no reason to even consider it. I see a lot of posts about failed rooting with MI1 vs ME7 too, so if you're still wanting to root taking the update could be a bad idea. I'd just wait to see what 4.3 brings

I rooted the phone, deleted the bloatware via titanium back up but don't know what to do next. What else did you do? Direct me to a video please. Thanks

MDK stock rooted. Im only missing blocking mode and torch toggle. now with 4.3 I need the gear support, otherwise no need to leave. (but man I would really love to use my watch) coming from a completely tweaked X and RAZR MAXX this phone was awesome out of the box. so with so many stable roms from the get go, maybe thats why there is so little traffic with this phone
ME7 Rooted and some bloatware frozen. Not using TW however. I bounce between Apex Pro, and Next Launcher. Still deciding if i want to update to MI1 and then 4.3. I'll probably wait till 4.3 has a root process.
MDK but thinking about taking the latest stock 4.3 update.

You may be stuck on that for a long time or forever. So far everything has been rootable and 4.3 might be but why take that chance? I would wait at least a week to see if any stock 4.3 roms come out for us on MDK. There is not tar available to make a rom from. I've only read of one person keeping root and it was an extensive process.

Where is my OTA to KitKat??????

I still can't get the OTA? Does anyone know how this roll out happens? When I hit check for update it tells me I'm up to date. I know other people in my area who already got the update. This makes no sense

Seriously guy? Forums are for members to help each other. Not to be a jackass. If you're not going to be helpful don't respond
I had to laugh.... If you can't take some fun in what you do or helping others... Xda is not for you...you need a private forum lol but if you're system is use up to date then it's up to date man ...

Well honestly the best option ours to flash kk with recovery of any one can either take the ota or call the carrier and try to get it pushed. Once you take ota you can't really ever do anything else without a complete wipe downgrade

I'm on T-Mobile. I don't root. I'm stock. I can't use the PC tool because I have a Mac. I called T-Mobile about this and all they do is read the press release. They don't know anything
You don't root? LOL ok why do you need a forum?

Not another "when will we get root" thread........
You will get it, when you get it.
But then, you may never get it.........
Why do people take the OTA then wonder about root.
If it's that important, be patient.......
I agree. What's the rush to update only to be stuck? We live in an instant gratification society anymore. Wait to update. There is nothing of significance in the update that you need it right away.
Verizon is really trying to clamp down on tethering. Foxfire is broke in the update... The most Verizon app requests root privileges to track tethering on unlimited plans. Stay away from updates until those in the know give you the go ahead.

right so why wait? Why not Downgrade to MK2 then flash any system img capable of MK2 install safestrap then re-upgrade the right way? Look under the development section we have a 20+ page spread on how to do it properly. This will give you root and access to a butt load of new 4.4.2 ROMs. It will also give you root you'll just have to deal with this method for time being i doubt it will change anytime soon. It works fine if you havent upgraded yet put on the breaks and do not upgrade your bootloaders. All you really need to upgrade is your AP and CP with hlos. Then switching between 4.4 and 4.3 is cake. Right now I've got 4.4.2 Custom ROM on my stock slot and a 4.3 gDux 1.1 on 1st slot and an AOSP ROM on my 2nd slot. Ive got a variety literally goes 4.4.2 to 4.3 to 4.2.2 AOSP and I couldnt be happier in terms of what I can throw on an use with my phone.
Actually Firefox just updated and now works on 4.4.2
