[Q] ROMs - whats the go? - Xperia Tablet Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
I've tried to trawl all I can, but im coming up short, so please bear with me.
Just got a XTZ last week, a SGP 321 (16GB LTE) with 10.1.1.A.1.307 pre loaded.
What is the lastest FW/ROM that is available for this unit? and what are the practical benefits?
What are the best custom roms from your experience??
I've got a Xperia Z and a HTC one, both running custom ROMs (both stock based), so im familiar with the general benefits, but just want to know what has been developed for far for the XTZ?
thanks

I've tried 2 custom roms so far, Free Xperia CM10.1 and P.A.C. ...and I've gone back to Sony stock each time
The most obvious issue many complain about is the over-sensitive touch screen. Sony have fixed this in their latest roms (you have the latest for yours) but it's still an issue in custom roms. Causes things like zooming on web pages when you are just trying to scroll, and can drive you mad when trying to place the cursor when editing text. Those with WiFi only tablets (311/312) will also lose GPS.
I also found my tablet became very laggy after a while with the PAC ROM. Shame, I love having Pie - the permanent status/nav bar on stock is one thing that annoys me.
Altogether, I'd stick with stock for now untill Sony release an official 4.2.2 Rom and the devs can then incorporate the fixes from it for the above problems.

Most (if not all) custom ROMs here are based on the latest version of Android (currently 4.2.2) - that's one of the main attractions of using them.
Currently the stock Sony ROMs are based on 4.1.1. However, Sony are very close to releasing their own 4.2.2 ROM for the Tablet Z...but android 4.3 is already "out there"...so it goes on.
You'll always be a few steps behind with a Stock ROM, but for me the Stock ROM is good enough - apart from the permanent Navigation Bar (I prefer Pie).
By the way, if you look at recent posts in the CM10.1 Free Xperia thread looks like someone may have come up with a fix for the over-sensitive touch screen...I may be tempted to try a custom ROM again if the fix works

Thanks from me too! I'm still on the Stock ROM because of the alleged "zooming" issue. I would be great to hear again from you in case have some new information on this

I have flashed 10.3.1.A.0.244 on mine and I get random touches on the screen, if you tick show touches in dev options you might see them if yours does this too. It's really bloody annoying when you're in the middle of playing a game or browsing and the tab decides to open the task switcher or press the back button!

I thought it was phantom touches as well but the latest update fixed it for me. I tested it before the update though and the touches were coming from where my fingers were on the back of the device.

I didn't get them on the older fw. Only on this one. And I'm also getting it when I'm not even holding the tablet, just whilst laid flat on the table??

The ones I have tried
At the moment I am using CM 10.2 available here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2386786
Seems to work well, extremely fast. There are some problems mainly with the onscreen keyboard and chrome but this is not really an issue.
I have also tried PAC which in my mind has way too many options and functions that collide with each other. Some of the options you choose from different roms actually overwrite each other which causes problems. You can find the rom from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2334047
CM 10.1 avalailable here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2284469
This one works well. It is stable and quite fast. DidnĀ“t have any problems with it. Used for a long time and changed to another rom simply because...well I got bored. For day to day use this is the one to have.

[Q] Stable JB ROM ?

Hi,
After moto decided not to provide upgrade for photon i dumped the device. Anyways I decided to use it again now after few months and wondering if anyone has made a good but specifically stock and STABLE JB rom for it. Please suggest if any new rom has been made for it that is really good enough to use.
Thanks.
What I run
For a stable version I would assume that your aware of current issues with ALL JB roms at this time. video camera and screen transition to name a few. That aside, I currently run CM10 build 10-20121127 from Th3Bill. Everything has worked for me using this build and its the one that I've found I come back to when others aren't up to par.

Hi,
By screen transition you mean the screen flicking when swiping etc. ?
Weird thing is that when I was using photon 4g those bugs were still there and they are still here.
It means no progress has been made in this regard at all.
Thanks.

That's exactly what I mean and that is weird that it was happening to you on the stock rom however there can be no progress made towards this because we are limited by Motorola's ability to update the drivers. So the screen transition bugs, as of right now, are something that we just have to live with.

[Q] What ROMs are people using? (FEEDBACK)

Hey people... I myself own a 312 model and love the thing to pieces. The first thing i did was get my precious root.
Right now I am reading up on the ROM releases and just dont know if I want to continue modifying or to wait.
I own a galaxy note... so i know all about flashing different roms... but my experience is usually the same with every rom.
Day one... yay... it works flawless. Day two... runs ok... then by the time a week goes by the thing just reboots so often that i get pissed off and flash something else.
So my question is what rom/kernel are people using... how long have you been using it... and how stable has it been?

Went from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2 and was shocked by the phablet UI and the loss of usefull screen. That's when i unlocked my bootloader.
Been using PACMAN nightlies and am currently testing AOKP. Both are working just fine but you lack stamina mode and some sony features like doubletap wakeup and the remote.
The Android 4.3 ROMs are both very usable for everyday usage though. PACMAN comes with more additional stuff but i don't need even half of it wich is why i test AOKP right now. All i want is the tablet UI and the fast 4.3 performance.
I flashed so many ROMS lately that it is probably due to that fact and i need to wipe it clean and start from scratch.
My wish would be a modified Sony 4.2.2 ROM with tablet UI. I think the additions Sony implemented are useful without bloating the operating system. Sadly it is completely useless with the phablet UI.

I'm using the PAC nightly builds and having no problems :good:
As Jequan mentions, you do loose some of the stock functionality. The only bit I miss is the double tap to wake - that was nice.
The main reason I use PAC is for Pie functionality. For me, permanent on-screen navigation buttons are a waste of screen space - so I use ROMs with Pie (PA on my phone, PAC on my tablet z).
Note : If you are going to unlock your bootloader, backup the TA partition first. (Google: 'Sony DRM TA partition backup' for more info)
At the moment, the Sony stock 4.1.2 is the best ROM. Full functionality, rock stable, no annoying phablet UI.
Only problem is WiFi connection is sometimes a bit unstable. You have to test whether that's a problem for you (for me it's not, with my router it works very good).
Well Im really just waiting to see if they screw up 4.3 cause its supposed to be out really soon. Ir remote... dont care about cause there are other apps on play... just wont be as pretty. What I really wanna hold on to lol... my gallery widget... I cant find one even close to it. but if I want it that bad theres an Advanced Xperia launcher I can install. I have all the files needed to get the ball rolling. Im just still kicking myself for upgrading to 4.2.2. Now I guess either downgrade or Rom either way next step for me is a recovery cause im not flashing nothing without one. PAC was a pretty good Rom ported to the Galaxy Note... But it crashed a lot on me.. But that was back awhile ago. I like my per app dpi and all the customization bells an whistles.
Another thing I was thinking was trying the Xposed framework on the stock Sony firmwares. With the right modules it just might do the trick. But I would still want to run a recovery before trying that aswell.
After benevolently testing new phablet-ui for some weeks, I found it most inappropriate for a 10.1" device on which I work in horizontal screen orientation. So I changed to latest PACMAN ROM nightly and now after a week I can conclude, this step has payed off. Although some things do not work (yet) in this ROM, it runs very smooth, not a single reboot from the start. It has tons of options to set and play with and it brought back the tablet-ui. I did no great feature testing, only daily work with Dolphin, Firefox, Chrome, K9, Jota, FileManager HD, QuickPic, c4Droid, AdobeReader, YouTube etc. Also battery live seems to be all right to me. The only thing is I had to change to Nova launcher, built-in Trebuchet did not handle wallpaper setting properly. On the downside I lost the unique features and apps of stock ROM, but I did not use them anyway ...
What i miss, is the stamina mode, MHL hdmi, USB Mass Storage.
I use CM10.2
USB mass storage also doesn't work??
You can't connect a USB stick to the tablet, even not with Stickmount or a similar helper app??
USB Storage seemed to work for me when i had PACMAN installed.
The complete lack of deepsleep resulting in battery drain when inactive is what made me go back to Sony 4.1.2.
Once they found a way to do something like staminamode i will switch back.
All it would take is to let the tablet enter deepsleep i think.
Pacman (or any other AOSP based ROM) doesn't have deep sleep? Can't believe that!
I'm sure you just had some app which held the tablet awake.

I reinstalled it clean just for that. Also installed greenify and disabled everything possible. Then installed wakelock detector and nope it never went to deepsleep. Neither did the AOKP ROM for that matter.
I posted it in various threads but so far i got not a single confirmation that others get deepsleep.
OK, so no deepsleep -> worse battery life?
I'm on PAC for two weeks now, I'm using the device exactly the same way as with Sony stock and activated stamina-mode. And there seems to be not much difference, maybe few percent advantage for Sony stock.
PAC Wi-Fi settings 'Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep' I set to never, but sometimes incoming mails are received anyway.

When i used AOKP or PACMAN i lost about 1% battery per hour when in standby. With the sony ROM i wont lost a single % over 12 hours. I also had massive battery usage shown for "Android system". I never could narrow down why or what causes it. With timescape the display is using most of the juice as it should be.
That is why i started looking into where the juice goes and it showed that it never goes into deepsleep and no app was active.
Maybe i did something wrong i dunno.
I'm on cm and loving it. I like the simplicity of cm while still having that AOSP feel.
I'm running AOKP nightlies, only because CM 10.2 doesn't seem to have a tablet UI - I'd love to be proven wrong on this though! AOKP is pretty solid, but it has some oddities to it that make me miss CM 10.2 or stock Sony. Mostly I miss Double Tap to Wake.
AOKP is not updated very frequently either, and there are some issues that I think should be fixed that just haven't been after weeks, so I'm somewhat disappointed for now.

See that's what i dont get... all these roms running off the same buggy cyanogen but know one fixes them... they just copy them over to such and such rom and its no better cause it has the same bugs. I guess its just the fact is whether or not all the fancy dancy features is worth loosing some functionality over a stock rom. I was thinking that modified xperia launcher was great to use on stock rom (but what happened to that... been months since update) along with a couple other customization apps. I don't see to much happening in the XTZ scene I cant even find a functional recovery that works like it should... correct me if Im wrong. Almost all the threads are full of out dated info ("that was soo last week" ) or empty promises, Or is it that there are people working on new great things and keeping it hush hush. Im no dev i would learn if i knew where to start (I know starting with XML would help) but how about an update on your projects once in a while like how things are going.
But to be honest I think im gonna downgrade cause Im sick of lookin at the stupid phablet UI with its grey bars (BAD SONY).
[ROM][10/11][CM10.2][Linaro][O3][MeowKernel][TWRP][Fidelity]CM10.2 - Fidelity Edition

Works beautifully well. Was getting boot loops on pac rom on my wifi only 32g xperiabtablet z.
I also posted in thread how to get viper4android to work and have scipts Supercharger V6 supercharged 100% working along with crossbreader.
Unrelated, is anyone else concerned about the usb port breaking on the device? im reading reports that it eventually falls off. Anyone here have their tablet since May, no issues? im buying a charging cradle to mitigate damage.
Also I really like the GUI in this ROM. I have deleted stock along launcher using no bloat,;I use Nova, way better and I locked nova in portrait mode because looks way nicer. I also flashed a swipe asop black keyboard with swipe and installed exposed module with app settings. I use greenify to grrenify all and keep a greenify shortcut on my desktop. I deleted all email apps including gmail because I use aqua mail.
Running very smooth here. Really love the expanded desktop feature, I use it while I'm gaming.
This tablet is far more superior with boot loader unlocked. Glad I did it!

4.3 is AWfFUL!

Upgraded to official 4.3 UK release, from an unmodded 4.2.2, and it's awful.
Lock ups, freezes, flickering screen, bluetooth failure and spontaneous reboots.
Undoubtedly the buggiest version of any mobile OS I ever had on anything.
My advice: Stay away from this piece of **** until the many bugs have been ironed out.
And to think that we're only getting 4.3 when really it should have been 4.4 straight away.
Shame on you, Sony!

You could flash a custom ROM? I use pacman 4.3 or go with cm10.1 (4.2.2) or CM 10.2 (4.4.2 Kitkat)
I recommend the pacman. Has more tweaks and GPS works. Official cm GPS is not working but everything else does and both ROMs are very stable.
Can someone explain to me what the advantages of using stock fw on this device? I was pretty sure that there weren't any.

I tend to agree that it is probably a bad flash... I think the 4.3 update is the best yet for the Tab Z. Performance is up by atleast 2k points in Antutu and even daily use seems much smoother. No crashes or lockups till now and I've been using the tab non-stop since the update (without any kind of restart).

Have you done a factory reset after upgrade to 4.3 ?
I also had issues after upgrading, byt a friendly user here told me to try a factory reset - since that the only issue I have is random flickering when keyboard is active, everything else works like a dream
4.3 is Solid Stable and Smooth, don't have any single issue as mention by OP.
Complete reset on the device seems to have fixed the problems. Wasn't even able to back up with Sony Companion.
Happy for now (after a couple of hours or re-installing and re-configuring), but it shouldn't have happened in the first place.

I'm using pacrom now which is jb 4.3.battery is very good! I'll do a full battery drain and will post results sometime next week. I use greenify which im sure helps and use boot manager. This ROM also has a number of power saving options you can implement not found on cm ROMs under the pacrom settings. Its my daily driver. i really like this tablet! Took it snorkling today in Barbados, it doesn't float to well, luckly I still have it! had it out all day taking photos in the ocean, screen full brightness, was 70% when I got home. That's with No Bluetooth or WiFi. This ROM does a great job too of retaining juice when its in a suspend state. Very little drain

I have only 2 reboots playing n.o.v.a. 3 everything else is simply perfectly
My experience is that 4.3 blows, just as OP stated.
I did the initial update - lots of crashes/freezes.
So I did a repair - same issue
Then re-flashed using flashtool - still bad
And then flashed 4.2.2 - and tablet is back to its former glory.
What could possibly be causing some users to be having such a hard time with it, while others are loving it?
So strange how this has been happening. There must be something with some of the firmwares. I'm one of the people who have had no issue with 4.3

Installing a new Operation System on a old one, can cause problems and instability. That`s not Android or Sony specific.
The only issue I have experienced is the random screen flicker when using the keyboard... Hope there is a fix soon, or else I may have to look into whether there is a way to downgrade to 4.2.2.
New to the device, so not sure is there is a Sony equivalent to something like Odin for Samsung...

4.3 woes
I had problems with the 4.3 ota upate. Had screen flickering, especially bad when running chrome browser. and the pulldown notification shade was down and dimmed the back screen
random reboots, freezing. tablet was practically unuseable.
flashed my original firmware back over and all was working great again.
tried again with 4.3 and back to the same antics with it.
I have however reflashed a modified 4.3 with super user root and recovery built in and can say ive had no problems appart from occasional excessive battery drain from the kernel, a reboot usual fixes it.
Could it be the UK ftf that's more.buggy? I'm using Nordic and no issues on my end

Back to jellybean for now. Kitkat issue on G2 Int

Hi guys I have'nt found much information on this forum regarding the intermittent lag/crashes on G2s that I'm experiencing (d802 version specifically) running kitkat aosp ROMs so I thought I might report my experience to see if I'm not alone here.
After I upgraded from CM 10.2 to CM11 my device would start lagging at random times during the day followed itevitably by a crash mostly after about 3 minutes of use (messaging, browsing, youtubing etc) where the screen would freeze and go black (and eventually come back.)
A reboot was always necessary which resolved the problem temporarily. These crashes happened between 1-3 times per day and were extremely frustrating.
The device in question is a d802 running CM11 and stock kernel.
They happened after fresh installs, even with only system apps. I tried flashing a custom kernel, playing with different settings and switching to other kitkat ROMs with little to no change.
I finally bit the bullet and switched back to CM10.2 stable and all is well with my phone now. I couldn't make the phone lag if I tried, its back to its beasty glory.
This device clearly must have an issue with Aosp ROMs on kitkat (or maybe I just picked a bad one) and its a real shame. If anyone has the same problem please share your experiences and maybe we can get to the bottom of this thing

Pretty surprising that all the big players like cm or aokp would be the buggiest. At least there's other options for an upgrade

I'm using omni. Without any issues at all. No freezes or anything like that.
Tried PA and CM11, both really buggy, just like the op described. Flashed cm10.2 but it just doesnt work with my fitbit so now ive gone back to stock. While stock is good, it just feels so sow compared to asop based roms.
If you want a AOSP rom really hard, try "Mahdi" rom.. i tried it for a day and it fits perfectly for me
But now i'm on stock rom (CloudyStock) because... it's awesome and i like the LG UI
Using Mahdi combined with the furnace kernel, no slowdowns and very rarely do I get random reboots. Highly suggested :good:
I have these freezes several times a day too. I noticed one time that my systemui stopped working with it
my guess: maybe it has something to do with the systemui?
CM11 ran great for me on my D801, but I just couldn't deal with the in call echo issue.

blame closed source drivers. the devs making these customs pull hattricks so you can have a custom rom. All without documentation and such, thats why they can be buggy.

Is the speed really noticeable?
Or
Is it worth it to upgrade just because of this speed factor?

Thanks for all the great suggestions guys. I'm currently using the latest carbon ROM nightly and its running like clockwork. Will update if anything changes though.
But its definitely worth experimenting with other ROMs.

Any ROM with Tablet UI and MHL support?

Hi there
I am looking for a rom with the Tablet UI (Like the old stock rom) with support for MHL. I am currently running a stable PAC release but the lack of MHL support is getting annoying. I was perfectly happy with the stock rom but after an upgrade the tablet ui was replaced with the phablet/phone ui which I thought was a step in the wrong direction so i flashed PAC roms until I found my daily driver.
Is there a custom rom that supports both the Tablet UI either through PA or an Xposed module (I have not found one that works so far) and MHL? Or do I have to go back to an old stock rom?
Tablet: SGP311 UK 16GB WIFI
Current ROM: pac_pollux_windy-4.3-20140122
Thanks in advance
phab7
use phab7 with xposed installer.
afaik no custom rom supports mhl, only an old version of cm (don't remember if 9 or 10) wich is not built for pollux_windy
i've gone back to stock for that reason

Have you tested this with a stock rom? I tried phab7 on my PAC rom but it didnt work, I assumed it was because of PA elements in PAC.

Ahh thats a real shame. What stock are you running and have you treid to get the Tablet UI? The new stock UI just makes the buttons really hard to use with two hands and its asif you have a 10 inch phone in your hands!

i'm now using latest with kk but didn't try mhl or tablet ui.
mhl is supposed to be supported, regarding tablet ui sony did many modifications to the system ui so the best chance is to try. if you do make a nandroid backup first.
No idea about MHL but none of the kitkat ROMs have the option for classic tablet UI sadly. I don't know why nobody did it considering you can adjust the UI Nav buttons.
The best solution for me is omni ROM so far. You can put the back button to a corner there at least.

Google basically killed all the code responsible for the Tablet UI on KK.

I don't think this is a valid reason considering i allready had tablet UI back on KK. With AOKP and pacman you can add as many nav bar items as you want. I added so many that i simply gave the most right three ones the typical three buttons. Voila i had my tablet UI.
The problem: Since a few updates they render a pacman or AOKP icon on every button you add but don't assigne anything to it wich looks stupid.
Technically there is nothing hindering to get a tablet UI back.

Already back on KK? That's the latest... And, that isn't actually Tablet UI. You just put lots of icons and that moved the main ones to the left. Tablet UI consists of having the whole SystemUI at the bottom, not just the buttons on the left...
You could recreate the whole code, but that would be a bit hard to do...

I see what you mean - i would be happy with the buttons where one can reach it. The other changes of the UI don't bother me as much.
I can confirm MHL works perfectly fine on SGP312 (wi-fi only) on Android v 4.4.2 stock, and even with Phab7 it wont change to tablet mode for reasons mentioned above. Cant make it show something thats not there.
And a word of advise to people that see those cheap @SS MHL adapters on e-bay... spend the money on a good one or an official one from sony if its still avail... cause I bought a cheap one from china, and now it flickers because the power cord connection is starting to get loose, so now I need to bend the cord back at the connector or the picture will disconnect. Thank god for DUCT TAPE.
Stock CM latest nightly has no mhl support?

Have you tried using PIE? I enabled PIE on the left side of my screen using Xposed and Gravitybox and that helps me avoid using those awfully placed (IMO) buttons.

So can you get pie on the latest stock Sony rom? I had LMT working on the old stock rom and got on really well with it. IMHO pie doesn't have as good a functionality as LMT did.
I don't have PC access at the moment so is there a way to flash a stock rom from my current PAC custom rom?
Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure you can get pie with xposed+gravitybox but I haven't tried latest stock since everyone complains about it being laggy.
I haven't seen any flashable stock rom so I guess you'll need a computer.
Also I don't even know what's LMT so I can't tell if it's better or worse.

That sounds awesome! What version of Onmi are you talking about? I thought MHL was stock only.

Thanks for the info, shame about needing a PC but with abit of luck omni could be a winner. LMT was like pie but you could add layers of app shortcuts around the edge which gives you fast access to your favourites.
