[Q] using verizon s4 internationally with data - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

i am going to be purchasing the s4 to upgrade fro my old nexus and will be travelling to greece for 2 weeks. I have read that i will need to call verizon to unlock my phone to make calls with a local sim card from that country. But i have also read that i will need to unlock the bootloader to receive data by changing the apn settings. Please confirm if that is correct. If so can i just unlock the bootloader without having a custom rom. I dont want to install any custom roms just unlock the bootloader and run stock rom. Is this possible and can someone direct to a link for instructions. Much appreciated.

You will not need to call Verizon because your phone is sim unlocked straight out of the box. Likewise, you will not need to unlock the bootloader-aside from the developer edition there has never been any such thing as an unlocked bootloader for the Verizon Galaxy S4.

Thanks so much for the help. I assumed you had to have an unlocked bootloader to change APN settings. If i am able to change APN settings then there is no need for me to unlock the bootloader.
Thanks

I don't know because I have the sprint version of the phone but I think you can with out Root call Verizon and ask them I had ok service with there CS I'm an ex VZW customer.

You neither need to unlock the bootloader, nor simunlock the phone. Just insert the simcard and add apn in network setting. No need to call verizon.

I just wanted to bring some closure to my original question since no one really comments once they get the answer to their forum question. Immediately out of the box, this phone is indeed unlocked and once you place a foreign sim card into the phone,It works immediately. Once the correct apn numbers are added, you also get data and internet. This phone is really great.

Heading to Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. So I just pop a Sim and ad APN? Does clicking APN give options to choose or do I have to manually set APN? Thanks in advance

You must enter the APN details manually - the phone isn't pre-configured with other carrier's APN information.
Once you've entered it, you can select the active APN from the list of entries that you've added.
If you have a Verizon SIM installed, APN editing is disabled. You'll need that non-VZ SIM if you're going to experiment.

this practice also works for trying to use a verizon GS4 on local GSM networks. Just doesnt apply to overseas so if you want to use this phone on tmobile you can do that.

Puerto Rico?
Sorry if this is not the right place for this, but does anyone know if I can use my phone in Puerto Rico?

I'm in Singapore now. It works great but their prepaid plans only support 3g; so it's petty show. The reps seem to know exactly how to program the phone and the APN info needed. $7 for 1gb and 7 days usage and the card costs $10 with a $10 credit.

[Q] Using the Note on AT&T & Tmobile prepaid service (SWAPPING SIM CARDS)

Hello,
I have a few phone numbers and am planning on setting up Straight Talk for my main # but would also like to use Tmobile for my vanity #. Does anyone know the APN / other settings in order to set this up on Tmobile? I just picked up a Tmo sim card and paid for the $30 plan.
Also, is there a way to get 3G/4G service? I understand w/Tmo that the AT&T Note will only be able to access the 2G service (bummer). Are there any other issues in setting this up to run both TMO and Straight Talk? Do I have to change APN or other settings each time I swap my sim cards?
Thank you for your help
first thing is your phone unlock? If it is you don't need to enter the apn, all you have to to is put your sim in the phone will recognize the right apn.

Thanks! I forgot to mention that I do need to unlock. I see that there are several outfits providing this service ranging from $8 to $80. Is there any one you'd recommend?

I can only assume that if the phone has "AT&T" branded on the front, that at&t would work the best no?
You get the apn settings for straight talk?
If a device is unlocked..the AT&T on the front is now simply just there.

Yes your right. Once unlocked the brand doesn't mean anything. But it doesn't mean it will work on Verizon. Yes it will work on tmobile after some research and reconfiguring. But it doesn't mean it will work "better".

Its not my phone it belongs to a friend of mine he asked me if I could fix it for him. Yes I got the APN settings from straightalk I got a 45$ card and put on the phone. Still no data. Think I will get a T-Mobile sim and a at&t sim and give them a shot.

I would check online both carriers coverage for your area also. One might not have lte or better coverage than the other.

Hmm....its possible. This phone needs some love and a little maintenance and some reconfiguration
You will need an activated sim from the carrier of choice. You cannot just change APN setting.

You need to know if you got an att or TMobile Sim from straight talk, since it's not working you probably got a TMobile one, that will require Sim unlocking and the addition of a TMobile compatible modem plus the proper TMobile straight talk apn info.

Yes I know, the APN settings have to match the carrier settings before it will work. I sold the i717 to a friend and that friend found someone else that is wanting to buy the phone (because the guy I sold it to can't get the phone to work properly) so hes not wanting it anymore. So the new buyer asked me if i could fix it back it was running ics but after i rooted it it took it down to GB 2.3.6 I THINK. I dont know maybe what im trying to say isnt making any sense sorry. The i717 was the first phone that i ever unlocked,the unlocking part was easy it was the flashing part that got me. I dont have the phone in my hands yet, im just trying to throw out what i remember. I will wait untill i have the i717 before i go any futher.

Verizon Note 2 unlock to use for prepay?

In finally fed up with Verizon and would like to cut my losses and terminate the contract. I love the phone and would like to use it for a 4g prepay service such as tmobile. Is it possible to unlock this phone and use it for another prepay carrier? If so can someone point me in the right direction?

Yes it is, you need to have root in order to add the correct APNs for data on T-Mobile.
I believe, unless it was changed, that the guide to do this along with the APNs is linked in droidstyles guide under the second post.

If you install a custom ROM you should be fine. I had Beans installed and I popped in a T-Mobile pre-paid SIM and had working voice and data (GPRS, EDGE, and HSPA+).

It should you might have to get a sim card that's international and a good Rom that works well with gsm networks if I'm not mistaking most other country's are gsm

isnt global mode in settings for going other places then the usa? doesnt global mode auto pick service after buying a sim card for czech republic cell services? im sure you can buy a prepaid service.
Depending on frequencies used then yes all the above should work in gsm based countries. At a minimum you'll have voice SMS and evdo data.

save yourself some trouble and call verizon BEFORE you go. They'll need to flip a (free) switch on your account to allow roaming on GSM networks.

That isn't necessary. And will give you a crap ton of roaming charges. International roaming ain't cheap.
Just pop a sim in from the Czech Republic and you'll be good to go.

Ok, so I dont have to do anything other than remove the verizon sim and place a local sim card? Will my Verizon sim still be active once I put back in or does it go dead for not being active that long? Do I need to rom my phone with GSM rom to do this?
Hi guys,
Just to let you know, I'm from Portugal and have the HTC DNA. Fully operational both stock and custom firmware. Everything works fine except LTE. Just need to create a new APN setting for the new SIM card.

Depends if you want to roam and keep your number when travelling abroad. I prefer to do it that way. My point is, if you plan on sticking with roaming on your Verizon sim, you need to have them enable gsm roaming on your account (cdma roaming works fine, where avaialable). I learned the hard way.

AT&T Sim Cards are back w/Straight Talk!

Is there a way I can get my Verizon S4 to work with a Straight Talk AT&T SIM card?! Please say yes, so I can get rid of this expensive A$$ bill?!

Yes I'm using my at&t straight talk sim on the verizon s4 and it works great!
Is there anything special I have to do with my phone? When I order the sim card from straight talk it won't let me select the cdma option so, should I just select gsm as if I have a AT&T Galaxy S4?

CDMA does not use SIM cards. The S4 is a CDMA/GSM/LTE device. AT&T is a GSM network.
You might have to edit the APN settings to use Straight Talk.

The Verizon S4 is a CDMA phone AND a GSM phone. I believe they made it this way so you can go to about any other country in the world and still use your phone - or it was just cheaper to mass produce the radios with everything in it.
Anyway the only thing to change is the APN settings to
Name=Straight Talk
APN=att.mvno
Proxy=proxy.mvno.tracfone.com
Port=80
MMSC=http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy=mms2.tracfone.com
works perfect. However I did just find a small problem. I have flashed both cyanogenmod and Liquidsmooth AOSP ROMS and they do not work with at&t ST sim - when I call the phone it does not answer or register the call at all. Not sure what the problem is, seems like for some reason it is not registering with the at&t network. Trying to find a fix. However, the phone has worked fine with all TW based ROMS I've tried.
Ok thanks for the information but I have one more question... I am rooted with Clean Rom 1.5, do I have to unroot my phone? Will I still be able use wife tether or foxfi? I heard AT&T took foxfi away.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
Oops just saw that you messaged me - yes just choose GSM. You do not have to unroot your phone but like I said in the last post - I cannot get AOSP roms to receive or make calls - data works - but not phone calls - which is rather strange and I'm sure can be fixed but nothing I have tried seems to work.
GSM is fine but in reality once you get the right LTE bands turned on, would it be better in global?

What kind of data do you see on AT&T? HSPA+? 3G? 2G?
