[Q] Will i lose root if i upgrade? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, just upgraded from Sony Xperia Sola to S3 (i am still learning). I bought the phone 2 days old with root and CWM, its on 4.1.2 JB.
Now its saying there is a new software for the phone, so i want to ask:
1. Will i lose root after upgrading?
2. Does the new software worth it?
Thanx guys

Do you want to keep root?
if you're rooted, IMHO its best to manually flash roms. Unles syou dont want root, in which case its best to download a full version from sammobile.com to return it to stock.

OTA updates don't work if you're rooted, you'll get an error

How about taking the time to read the basic faqs and guides first .
Loose root yes .
New software worth it who knows unless you say what it is .
But its probably;y a minor update details all over the forum .

I belive there are custom roms (such as Imperium) with OTA upgrades (at least that's what they say on their [ROM] page.

of course. we're talking about Samsung OTA

-Yes the guide will work
-There is only one custom ROM at the moment and it's basically a stock one that is prepared for future mods
-ROMs are custom operating systems that give your phone added functionality/speed/a new look
-Yes, they're easy to flash with Odin
-Rooting invalidates your warranty
-Re-flash a stock firmware and use a USB-jib (£4ish) to reset the custom binary counter and no-one will ever know you rooted
hope that helps

Some questions about SGS2 GT I9100T

Hello everyone, I am a Android N00B and don't know what I am doing so please help me out answering some questions..
1) My SGS2 is a GT-19100T (New Zealand) being provided by Telecom NZ, will I still be able to ROOT using the same methods for GT-19100?
2) When people say I can not get the warranty from Samsung can I still claim my insurance with my provider that I am paying extra for?
3) How difficult is it to unbrick a SGS2? Is it ALWAYS possible to unbrick it?
4) How easy is it to brick the S2?
Please help a noob out. Thanks in advance.

That depends upon the terms and conditions of the policy . But as you have modified firmware i would guess not .
3) How difficult is it to unbrick a SGS2? Is it ALWAYS possible to unbrick it?
Brick a SGS2 about a 1% chance rising to 100% if not following instructions or wrong firmware .
Recover a bricked SGS2 about 95% chance as most are soft bricked .

The answer to 1) is yes. I have a I9100T also. JJE has given you some very good advice. If you're unsure/scared/not confident about doing anything (rooting, flashing non-stock firmware, etc) to your phone, don't do it until you are confident about the process.
At best you could end up with a soft brick that might take you a few days to workout how to fix (which means no playing with your new toy), and as JJE also mentioned, there's also a chance of hard bricking your phone which increases depending on how well you didn't read/follow the instructions for whatever you were doing with your phone.
This is a good place to start reading, so is this thread. Expect to get fairly short 'use the search function' answers if you ask a question that has been answered on here 2,000,000,000 times already.

Just flash another rom over it via recovery or Odin depending on the rom. Also, make sure you re-flash a T modem once done for better reception.

That will come via KIES when your phone provider releases ICS not before .

What has locked got to do with it ???
Your provider of the phone as defined by the product code updates via KIES .
Or join a forum like XDA and flash stock Samsung ICS rom .
jje
Ask your carrier.
Phone running carrier-branded stock firmware getting firmware updates via Kies it's entirely up to them when they release it after receiving it from Samsung. My carrier got it 7 weeks ago & still hasn't released it (not that I'd want to use tho).
Root with superoneclickroot & stop being a *****!

Half a brain would search the forum as this question has been asked ten thousand times with the usual reply flash a stock GB rom from the stock roms thread via Odin or restore your saved original rom .
Once restored sell SGS2 and buy a Nokia .

Firmware

Hi,
I don't know its already being asked but here I go:
I'm using a Galaxy S3 with the official stock rom (that is the LUX from Belgium)
Today I've contacted Samsung to ask when the next update will be available and they say that it isn't soon.
Now I'm doubting to flash the stock rom for the UK.
But I don't know anything about flashing the radios etc.
And what are the pro's and cons?
Thanks

Cons you may brick your phone you may void warranty you may not understand the process if you cannot follow instructions .
Pros you update to whatever firmware you want when you want .
But as this is not a Samsung forum but XDA Developers forum waiting for official releases is not what we are about .
Stock rom Guide .

Do you know what the ods are to get bricked? I flashed phones in the past so I know a little bit.
Will there be a problem when I flash the UK version that I can't use my mobile internet etc?

I've read it and it was very helpfull.
But I've still got the same questions.
Whats the chance my phone will be bricked?
And will I be able to use mms, internet, etc... or do I need to flash/chance the csc?
Thanks
The more reluctant you are to read, the greater the chance of bricking, but the S3 is pretty bomb proof, and don't confuse hard brick with soft brick!

Updating rooted/kerneled

Hello,
Aint sure if this question is already answered, I searched but didnt find it immeaditly, so i thought it was better to make a topic, So i could also ask a few questions more,
So i have a S3 international for a while now,
And i was thinking to leave the stock rom alone, But rooting, Doing clockwork recovery and a new kernel on it, I am think to get Perseus.
So the question is, if i do this, will all my apps be gone from my Phone and will it be cleaned up?
Also i wanted to ask if i do this, and theres a update from Samsung, How do i update it? Just click on it? will anything be erases/bricked?
Also i seen that the Toolkit (for root and recovery etc) is for 4.1.2, but i recently had a update XEMC2, but the kernel name is still the same, Is it safe to use this toolkit?
Thanks for reading this post,
Best regards,
DrLuigi.

i think it might be safe due wll, Its still the same kernel etc, I heard the only change they made was some bugs?

Well probably we will still get Keylime after Jellyban 4.2.1, Since well, Samsung would be crazy if they would let down the Note 2 and S3 users,
Wich are like millions.
It would be actualy good for there name if they satisfy there customers, and get them a even better name when talking about updating there devices,
Well thats my opinion atleast.
I dont think they would let 40 (it was 40 million right? ) million users down on updates.
