[Q] infinite home screen scrolling, ongoing wifi notification, bookmark sync - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I am 24 hours into using my S4 and have a few questions I am on VRUAME7, rooted, and do not have a custom recovery installed.
1. I want to enable infinite home screen scrolling. I did some digging and found that if you edit system/csc/feature.xml as described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2033894
I tried this with both ES file explorer and 902 Text Editor and both will not let me edit and save the file since it is read only. On 902 it says EROFS read only system file Any thoughts? Anyway to make the file editable?
2. If I do not have a custom recovery is there any way to disable the ongoing wifi notification.
3. Anyway to sync bookmarks on the stock browser with chrome on a desktop? I have mobile chrome on the s4 but wanted to play with the stock broswer.
Thanks.

Using ES File Explorer, go in to tools/root explorer. Click "Mount R/W" click on the "RW" radio button next to /system. and hit "OK". Now you can edit your file. Don't forget to remount that /system as Read Only when you're done.

Thanks a lot. that worked. Do the other changes in the Galaxy note thread work on the s4 as well?

How did/are you rooted with that current ota? I just picked up a s4 today, vzw, and it seems we have lost root. Sorry if its off topic, just that I am interested to at least get root. Thanks

If you already installed the OTA you're too late.
If not.... (I found a lot of this out right here on the forum):
1. Download the OTA but after the d/l delay the install for several hours
2. Root using the method on xda with ODIN and motochopper
3. Immediately download Voodoo OTA rootkeeper and back up root
4. Let the OTA update install
5. ***Do a factory reset (This allows you get the wifi toggle. Don't do what I did... i.e. set up your phone and then do a factory reset and then have to re-setup your phone)
6. After the factory reset when you reconnect to the play store supersu and ota will download automatically and you'll still have root (I did this).
Hope that helps.

Oh well.....looks like I am too late! Typical vzw.....I appreciate the heads up. Glad that you got it before..... I'm off to the "bounty link". I forgot how much bloat sucks, and to be stuck with it for now!

[Q] Over the air updates

I'm sorry if this was posted somewhere else, but I searched and nothing came up. When you root your phone does that mean you no longer can receive over the air updates? Or is that only if you have custom ROM's installed? That being said, is the ROM that you install to gain root access considered a custom ROM? Sorry... I feel like a n00b but I had to ask. :] Thanks

You can unroot and update, but be warned a lot of the time an ota update will also correct the current exploits that were used to achieve root access. If you are rooted it's usually a good idea and easier to flash a ROM that includes the update already. The developers get a hold of the source codes a few weeks before VZW actually pushes it to your phone and you don't have to wait for jcase, unrevoked, or whomever to find a new way to root if the ota breaks root access.
Hope this helps"
I was searching the same thing earlier bro and this is the answer I found.
Does this mean if I don't delete bloatware and just freeze it, then I can still get the updates? I read that article and I didn't see them answer whether or not getting an OTA update would take root off. Thanks for the response!

No the point is if you root, have SU, and/or a custom recovery, the update will fail.

Good deal. Thank you for the info.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
So if I'm reading this correctly, a corollary is that if you intend to root but haven't, its likely a good idea to do it before the OTA is pushed, or else you'll have to wait for the developers to figure out how to root the new one?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
More then likely any important updates/fixes/etc will turn up in ROMs anyways.
so how do you disable updates?

try this it works
only difference for you will be lines 4 and 5
look for your current ro.build.fingerprint and change it to the current update...
oh and also don't forget to delete the update from your cache
If you are comfortable editing the build.prop then follow these directions.
Directions:
1. Use root explorer and navigate to /system
2. Mount as r/w
3. Long press on build.prop then click on Open With then Text Editor
4. Find the line ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/SCH-I510/SCH-I510:2.3.6/GINGERBREAD/FP1:user/release-keys
5. Change FP1 or FP5 in that line to FP8
6. Press the menu button on the phone and click on Save and Exit
7. Mount back to r/o
8. Reboot phone

I attached the file for more info.
mine reads:
ro.build.fingerprint=samsung/SPH-D710/SPH-D710:4.0.4/IMM76I/FI27:user/release-keys
do I change the FI to something else? if so this change will not brick my phone? this is my only cell connection to outside world.
the download system update that wants to install is a FL24 is it because the phone knows FI the FL will not install?
You could just rename otacerts to otacerts.bak and then rename updater.apk to updater.bak.

what additional info do you need from my phone, that will make this a more sure ok to do for sure no worries ? what about
what disconnecktie recommended "You could just rename otacerts to otacerts.bak and then rename updater.apk to updater.bak"
is that safer, not sure where to find those files? I am doing titanium back. but i do not want to go through the hassel of reloading everything back on the phone.
Either way will work but the otacerts and updater both just catch ota information when it is sent out. You aren't deleting anything so it is impossible to brick from it. The otacerts is in /system/etc and the updater apk is in /system/app or course. Use a root file explorer like es file explorer and mount system as read/write.

so do I wait to see the update icon? then do the process
and to be clear the process is?
go to /system/etc then rename otacerts to otacerts.bak save it
then go to /system/app then rename update.apk to update.bak save it
how long does that change last if they are pushing the update wont it just come right back?

Go to Settings > Applications > All > Market and select “Clear Data.”
Open your file manager app.
If you are using ES File Explorer, navigate to Settings > Root Settings and enable “Root Explorer” and “Mount File System.” For Root Explorer, tap the r/w icon at the top of the screen.
Locate and open the file “build.prop” in the /system folder.
Create a backup for “build.prop.” To do that, copy the file and save it to another folder. You will also need to rename the file.
Go back to the original “build.prop” file. Open and edit it. If you are using ES File Explorer, you will need to long-press the file and open it in ES Note Editor.
Locate “ro.product.model” and “ro.product.manufacturer” and make the following changes (for this guide, we will be using Nexus S as an example):
ro.product.model = Nexus S
ro.product.manufacturer = samsung
After typing in the necessary changes, save the file.
Now try your play store
This is just a copy and paste. But If the model and manufacture is not photon and Motorola then set it to that. If it is photon and Motorola then set it as anotjer major high end device.

all of these are saying they are incompatible with this version.
the word version is what is throwing up a red flag to me.
How about starting from scratch?
Backup with Titanium backup (only user apps).
Wipe data in recovery, flash full sbf, root again.
ok question. i rooted with torpedo. now im browsing my phone and when i open the SIM app it has some greyed out items about the sim card. problem is when i was stock i could never get into the SIM app. Cause since im with USCC we dont use sims. is there a way to reverse what torpedo did to my phone to relock it? and if there is can anyone help me figure it out???

i did a lot more reading over the net and found the cause of this issue for me. it was my DPI on my phone. my phone was set to 260DPI instead of the 240 dpi it should be for my phone.

after 9 soft wipes and a ton of re-rooting and file swapping and headaches it boiled down to that little change i made for better vid quality.
i know i hijacked this thread without intention and am sorry for it but hopfully someone else can learn from this.

Update: I tried the older version and it tries to run a test which fails, resulting in not being able to use that feature. I would assume the same test is failing in the new version.

Not sure, but maybe related to OP's issue: after rooting, using ES File Explorer version 3.0.4 (dl'd from play store), I can't use the built in root explorer. After selecting "Root Explorer" from the menu, after a delay (appoximately 20 seconds) I get the "Sorry, test failed. This feature cannot run on your phone." message in the attached screenshot.
Interestingly, I was able to access ES's root explorer while still on the pre-release kernel, before flashing back to the stock kernel.
The new ES is a little different. Pull up the fast access menu and open the tools tab on the left. from there, tap on root explorer, mount R/W, then change the bubbles to RW. I had to do this to edit my build.prop so I assume this is what you're asking. Hope this helps!

same here. ES's new update sucks anyway. i've used ES since day one, and with the new update, every single time you wanna do root things you have to mount system....EVERY time. the old one would stay mounted. it's very annoying.
i started using root browser or something..the free one.
I was reading through some other posts on a different thread and I came to the understanding it may have to do with the file system format or kernel. I would test a kernel but not sure if I can easily get back to stock as I don't want to lose functionality. Can anyone else test a different kernel to see if that works?

I ran into this exact same problem with ES File Explorer. I thought it might have to do with using SuperSU, but I haven't been brave enough to downgrade to Superuser.
As with others, I've gotten very comfortable with Root Explorer. I now only use ES to copy between the local file system and Windows shares.

Also confirmed, once.
Now that I go back into the app a second time, it doesn't seem to ask SuperSU for permissions and /data (for example) is empty.
I'm still not 100% convinced I fully understand the new ES Explorer's root paradigm. In the old one I fell in love with, you enabled root with one simple checkbox and you had Root Explorer (kinda; I have both installed). In this latest major update, you have to pick Root from the side menu, after which you're prssented with a list of tools that I don't want/need. To browse as root, do I just hit Back to this helpful, unwanted list and start browsing? This is what I did during the first successful test of this test code, but it won't work a second time.

[Q] tether verizon 4.3 build mk2

Just rooted my Verizon galaxy S4. Pain in the ars compared to the Droids that I've had for the past 6 years. Maybe just different. Not really interested in changing out Rom, but really need to have tether. I have unlimited and use about 16 gbs per month for business. I know that there's a thread on xda for tehter, but its somewhat old and can't see anyone that's used it or applied it for the MK2 build. Have tried numerous WiFi apps on market and none work. Also the.the thread on xda is somewhat over my head. Anything else out there. Hows this, since I don't do this for a living and don't have the patience to do the tether package ...theres 50.00 bucks to help me get tether and to understand it a little better. Use to change the entitlement on the droids and had tether, but the process on the galaxy is stumping me. let me know
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2512981
This thread is updated for MK2. Relatively simple as the primary method is to simply copy and paste in a root explorer.

This thread is updated for MK2. Relatively simple as the primary method is to simply copy and paste in a root explorer.

This is the part that's beyond me. I know it must be frustrating to deal with us out here, but any and all help is very much appreciated.
1.Download the modded framework-res.apk from here for MJ7 or here for MK2 then copy it to /system first then change framework-res.apk's permissions to rw-r--r-- (chmod 644) and then MOVE it to /system/framework and overwrite framework-res.apk. Then reboot and you should have tethering!
Do I do a direct download to the phone? or or to desktop and than to system. and so on. again any help is appreciated This is why I go to YouTube and have a 8th grader show me how to do it. Kind of embarrassing for a guy that's in his fifties. But than again my work and what I do for a living is beyond allot of people...Thanks

Use to change the entitlement on the droids and had tether, but the process on the galaxy is stumping me. let me know

I also have unlimited. Have you tried using PDAnet+? When I upgraded from 4.2.2 MKD to 4.3 MK2 my Foxfi app quit working and then I tried PDAnet+ and it works like a charm.

Have used PdaNet in the past. Cant get it to work on this build...Weird
I'm on MK2 with Surge's tether. I found it much easier to unpack the zip on my desktop and move the files to the root of my external SdCard. Once you have all four files in the folder on your external SdCard, download Terminal Emulator to your phone from the play store, open it and type in the commands letter for letter (double check your spelling and spacing). The script runs, the phone reboots, and voila tether works through the hotspot app no problem.
---------- Post added at 05:47 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:07 PM ----------
In addition if you use the script through Terminal Emulator you have a nice way to return to stock - just type in the commands for the untether script.
I had to undo the tether to accept the OTA from MJ7 to MK2. However, the next OTA should be kitkat, so who knows if this will even be an issue or if we'll still be able to tether this way.
Question on the root on the sd card..Do I make a file, no file on in E'S file mgr.

I'd say it doesn't really matter how the file (frameworks-res.apk) gets to the root of your SD card. From there, using a file manager (I usually use File Manager, be sure to check root explorer and system write in the settings) locate where ever you placed the file, highlight it by pressing and holding, there should be an option to copy the file. Select that. Press home (which brings you to the root of your SD card), then press the "Up" button (which essentially begins accessing system files) until you can see the system folder. Paste here. Press and hold the file again and select "Permissions." Check The read and write of the first row, and read only of the next two rows. Move the file. Navigate to the framework folder and drop and overwrite. Reboot.
I use wanam xposed and xposed. There's an option to turn off tethering provisioning their.

The system file. If there is one (depends on file manager used) it should be the option below the root explorer option.
Which file mgr. do you suggest?

Rooted Users: Edit the Volume

Guys,
I can't post in the official thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/guide-headphone-speaker-volume-booster-t2819821
But I just wanted to confirm that if you root your device and follow the directions here, I've got confirmed working on the Sprint LS990 variant of this phone. The thread mentions nothing of this on Sprint or the LS990 but I can confirm that it is indeed working.
You'll need to:
1. Have root with SuperSU installed
2. Install Root Browser and 920 Text Editor (Available in market for free)
3. Navigate to system/etc and then mixer_paths.xml
4. Change file permissions to rw-r-r
5. Save to your downloads folder just in case you trash your phone or something
6. Navigate to markers mentioned in thread link above. The LS990 variant will have aforementioned markers listed approximately 15 lines later in the code. Edit them to your liking.
7. Save, reboot, pray not to get caught in limbo.
8. Enjoy having better sound than everyone else with a phone.
Just an FYI anyone attempting this: If you do not edit the permissions correctly when overwriting the file the phone will not boot. It will get stuck at the yellow sprint screen and you will have to preform a reset.
Root browser did not allow me to change permissions correctly and when going quickly I did not notice it when overwriting.
However, second attempt after recovery it worked great.
Thanks for the info TROPhouse
So i havnt edited yet but permissions look right here. Will they change after I edit and save. And then change them back right. I don't wanna get stuck since we have no custom recovery yet.
Did it. It was way worth sweatin through the reboot process. Haha.
Has anyone thats using Viper used this mod?

I'm using viper. Works perfect. After installing I moved the app from data/app to system/app. Heard people were having it being stopped after using it for awhile and this was there fix for that.
Kept having permission issue and was kind of nerve wrecking with no recovery.... However, phone sounds awesome now!

What settings did you end up with. I used 68 or 69 on all mine and it's pretty good. Not sure if I want it louder or quieter but it's definitely way better than stock was.

I did 69 which seems perfect to be honest... I mainly hear music at the gym and usually use soundcloud... at 69, I don't even get close to full volume on the phone now. Its perfect
it seems like there are another few steps in this process that aren't being mentioned, like how to save the mixer_paths file because following the instructions and updating the lines I want to update then trying to save with 920 text editor ends with the message that it's a read only system file.
Anyone care to fill in the blanks as to how you get the update to stick?
thanks!
Super loud
Thanks! Great volume!:victory:

Don't know if this is too late to help, but...
I don't use 920, but my guess is there's an option somewhere (probably in settings for the app) to switch the file system to read - write mode, instead of read-only. I use the FX app, and that's what I had to do with it. Be sure to set it back to read-only when you're done.

SUCCESS!
So you need to download an app that will mount your system, I used an app called mount/system. You launch it then select Mount r/w. Once you do that you have the needed access to edit the files as listed. I used this guide as well and had success....hope this helps others!
copy the original mixer_paths to your memory by ES file
edit it by notepad++ on windows and put it again in your memory
copy it from internal to your /system
highlight it and set permissions rw r r
move it from /system to /system/etc/
reboot and enjoy
Has anyone tryied playing with bluetooth volume i cant find where to change it any sugestions?
Nice, I haven't had any issues with my phone being too quiet, but I also came from a Verizon G2. Those were noticeably horrible for volume levels, so the G3 is a welcome change.
In regards to all the questions about which app to use for which function:
You could use Root Explorer, or any other file explorer that has root capabilities (ES File Explorer, Total Commander). You do NOT need to use a specific app set and if your file explorer can't mount/unmount the system partition with root permissions, try a new one because that one sucks.
You also should not be downloading three separate apps to accomplish this. It's kind of overkill to have a file explorer, a text editor, and a system partition mounter when any decent file explorer has all three of those built in. I think ROM Toolbox even has all those capabilities in the free version.

Agreed but I downloaded ES File Explorer and several others and I was unable to find the ability to mount as r/w. If the option is in those apps, it's very much hidden so an app to mount your file system then an editor was what I needed and it worked.

ES's current interface does hide a lot, and is in almost every way inferior to the original interface. But the option is there. It's also in FX (File Explorer) which is my root editor of choice.
the pursuit of sound quality! bullet for my valentine cant be heard on stock!!!!!!!
tried this. guess i messed up. stuck on spark screen. sat and read through the pages here. gotta fix my phone when i get home tonight.
what did you change you volume levels to?
So can those who have successfully made the edits share what volume levels you changed and what are the new numbers? I've made the change to mine and even with my $100 earphones there's distortion at what I feel is a low level. I'm thinking maybe there's a balance among these that I need to achieve?
thanks!
