Is it possible to change the settings app to a AOSP theme without root? I have my phone nearly to stock (at least with the way it looks, using the Google keyboard, HoloLauncher, HoloLocker, the stock Gallery apk, and the stock Camera apk from 4.3) and don't like the TouchWiz settings. I do not want to root because last time I did it gave me a yellow triangle and wouldn't do anything and had to exchange it. (luckily, the store is unincorporated and did not charge me $700 for a return of a rooted phone) I would prefer not root again if I can help it, and am wondering if I could swap out the default settings app, or maybe get some better instructions on how to root. I am no stranger as I have rooted a Kindle Fire, a Nexus S, and this phone. I am just scared Verizon will pull the yellow screen on me again and need to know how to get around it

Dude, you must have flashed a custom rom while not unlocked to get the yellow triangle. Just use Casual Exploit for VRAMC3 by Adam Outler. If you get errors, it doesn't brick your phone. Anyways, assuming you want to edit or replace the stock settings, its replacing a system app or editing a system app which requires root and an unlocked bootloader.
Here is the link to Casual. Just be completely stock on Android 4.1.2 with baseband and build ending in VRAMC3 and you should be good to go.
Link to Adam Outler's Casual:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2272066
Just download casual, turn on developer options on your phone with USB Debugging checked on. Plug in the phone to the computer. When it says Device Connected, just press "Do it" and your good to go. Let Casual run its thing. If an error occurs, don't worry, your phone should reboot normally back into your lockscreen.
Hope I helped. Press "Thanks" if I helped you. I don't neccesarily know how to do what you requested in your thread as I haven't touched my settings yet but changing the dpi in it. But, googling it should do the trick.
Well I did use the Exynos Exploit to root without needing a computer. I'm not sure if that changed anything. Thanks for the link I'll probably just get a custom ROM and change everything to 'Stock'. Idk how to thank someone as I am very new to xda, though...... I would if I knew how (hint hint)

I see... You rooted but did not unlock your bootloader which caused your soft brick before. Just follow my link and it should root and unlock your bootloader and then you can get flashing.
Thanks guys. I thought it also unlocked my bad :-/ but I am now fully rooted and am running CM 10.1

I rooted it when it was on 4.1.1. but update it OTA and now I am having this issues. anyone can help me how to remove the count. I already tried the Triangle away. v3.00 (i bought it) and it bricked my phone too me a hour to get it working.
I am not much of a noob on phones i came from a galaxy nexus. Just the upgrade is a bit awkward is done much different then the Gnex. if you guys have any tips I know it has to do something with the counts. but anyone know a alternate way please let me know.

Triangle Away is not for rooting, all it does is set the flash counter back at zero which you have no need to do unless you're returning the phone you Verizon. Also you have to be rooted for Triangle Away to work.
You need to read droidstyles guide in the Android Development section. AFAIK the only way to root your phone on the 4.1.2 update is to use CASUAL which also unlocks your bootloader. As I said you need to read droidstyles guide in the Android Development section:

I for one have gained so much knowledge and help from this thread, I gladly donated. Also support your Devs that give you the roms that make our phones awesome.
Thread is long overdue...too much crap in the other thread.
Thanks for opening this. I for one am pretty content with my S4 overall..... but only because I'm running darkslide ME7.
I feel terrible for those of you who are unable to run custom roms. The bigger issue here for all of us is what will be coming in the future? Will I buy another Samsung device after this debacle? I'm not sure.
I have been contemplating leaving Verizon for T-Mobile because of this nightmare...
I think the lesson to learn here is to never buy a locked device again, and never buy a flagship phone in its debut...because the company is just going to release a developer edition a month later and give us all the shaft.
My .02 cents

I read something on here about "do not flash the latest update" less than 1 minute after starting the update. I actually contemplated doing a battery pull in the middle of it. In the end I just let it ride. Hope I made the right decision.
I wonder how many people that said "I'm willing to lose root, I'm just going to take the update" are now trying to return their phones or *****ing about not having root.

Guys its happening again. Stop having conversion. The devs dont care where you got your phone or how it is or if youre going to return it. Keep this discussion to a minimal otherwise just go back to the original forum or pm each other but unless you found how to unlock bootloader or recovery or you are adding to the bounty then dont reply to anything else or post anything here. We are trying to keep this short, clean and easy for devs. Thanks.

why post bounty in here when theres a thread for that? majority of ppl coming here are not "devs".. its suppose to be discussion so the duscussion isnt in the bounty thread.. talking about being on me7 is directly related to bounty thread as ppl are anxiously hoping/waiting for an awesome dev to help us. but imo, itd b harder for openyoureyes to now search through two threads to track the bounty $.. good job!

JUST A THEORY!!
I just came over from tmobile GS2 t989 unaware of the bs going on with ME7.
With the limted amont of research this is my theory.
Could I odin the md2 kernel on my me7 device dl a rooted mdk rom rename it update.zip and flash it in stock recovery then flash the mdk kernel to reset it so I can root it with custom recovery

You can't Odin back to any previous kernel at all. That's the main issue with this ME7 update

The most I can think of to make this thing work is to somehow change the requirements that this update looks for in recovery, bootloader, etc. But that's up to the devs as i have no knowledge in android developing
How come we dont have a recovery yet? i understand an unlock but isn't a recovery easier to make too? i remember all the other phones i had ( droid 2, razr maxx) The recovery came out right when the root did.

It's to my understanding in order to flash in stock recovery u have to rename the file to update.zip; I understand that it doesnt change the contents of that file but (correct me if I'm wrong) but thats the only way stock recovery will recognize it.

Droid 2 had a bootstrap, if I recall.
Not sure about razr maxx.
Since you need it to boot INTO the recovery, you need to be able to unlock the bootloader and change how it boots up.
Some devices have vulnerabilities with the bootloader that allow it to be bypassed, like a bootstrap etc.

I'm new to rooting and the whole android scene. Just bought my s4 a month ago and rooted it this week. I've been trying to customize themes and icons and I know I need to deodex the files on my phone. I downloaded universal deodexer and dropped the files where I needed to but the program wouldn't run. My question is, is there any other way to deodex the files and how exactly do I locate them? Maybe I didn't locate the right ones.
First off, its pretty cool that you are actually trying to learn what you are doing. The initial learning curve is pretty big but you will get the hang of it piece by piece. I can't speak for everyone but I as still learning and started with the Droid years ago. Take a look at this post for some useful info. Credit to Obsidian for the definitions and links. Just take note that some of his definition do not apply to this phone since it was created for the Bionic, but most of the info is helpful and universal.

Now, to answer your question. Honestly I would flash a pre-deodexed rom and use it to modify things. A few are in the Samsung Development section that are basically TouchWiz minus the bloat. You may even find one there that suits you perfectly with no extra modding.

check out the youtube channel of DroidModd3rX... find his video titled "Verizon Galaxy S4 How To Unbrick, Unroot, Return to Factory Set"... even if you don't have a Verizon GS4 this will help you if you bricked your device. Even ODIN?
Yea i tried Odin, 3.07 and I tried three different stock images and none of them worked. It got to a part during the process that said "Auth (fail)" and then it would close out the program. I just got my replacement yesterday but I'm kind of afraid to root it again lol.
Although I would really like to root it again, since half of the stuff I used it for had nothing to do with what caused the problem in the first place. I was just really excited to download and install a custom room that didn't lag as much as this nonsense from Samsung.

Your original problem sounded like you were trying to flash the mdk firmware on a me7 firmware which would cause auth fail in odin.
But I couldnt find any info above. If you did the the me7 root method you wont have write permissions because boot loader is locked. which would brick your phone when you flash a rom.
Is the me7 root method the one that roots through the micro SD? Is there a way to do so and unlock the bootloader currently or has one not been released yet for the newest Verizon update?

if you did it through terminal then yes. you are on me7 which is why odin gave you problems. currently there is no way to unlock the bootloader. only the firmware previous to me7 can unlock it. So you might be stuck for a while.

root still lets you uninstall or freeze that bloatware on your phone. Only thing I used iy for anyways. have about an extra 400mb of ram freed.
Well that is good to know in case I decide to go through with rooting again. Is there a way to uninstall that update? Or am I stuck waiting for a new method to root the phone that allows flashing? I might root again just to have some of the apps like gmd gesture and greenify.

I would just get titanium backup for now. and remove some bloatware a safelist can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2314265 would not experiment with deleting random things it could cause brick problems nothing much else. if you are not comfortablr with that just try and wait for bootloader to be unlocked which has no eta
I may just do that. If I were to root again on me7 since there's no unlock method, if one were to be released would I be screwed or is there normally a way to do that at a different time than the root?

I actually have grown to love some features of TW and when I need a visual change I throw up a custom launcher and I'm perfectly content. So my question is....
If I accept the OTA, will that remove root AND the SafeStrap recovery automatically and then I'll be back to square one or will I still have to remove SS via ADB? Thank you!

Best way to get back to fully stock is to flash your device with Odin. You can find the factory images in the android Dev section.

Nobody will really be able to answer this until developers have time to dig into the update. Most likely the end result would not be preferred. I would wait... if its an OTA, please grab it from the cache folder and upload it somewhere for the devs to inspect so they can give you an answer.

Hey guys. I am not from around here. You will normally find me hanging out in the Nexus forums. I need some help trying to correct an issue my noob buddy caused on his E970. He brought it to me today in a boot loop and apparently he rooted it an uninstalled some GAPPS and now he has this security error and BL. Now, so far I have managed to install the drivers..... that's it. I have worked on a variety of different devices but I am really having trouble with this. I think the issue is I can not find a thread that is comprehensive enough to explain what alot of the different tools are and what they do. I mean there is
1. LGNPST
2. Teenybin
3. Freegee or something like that
Then there about 14 different file types depending on the tool you are using. I have seen;
1. dll
2. bin
3. kdz
4. tot
I have to be honest with you guys this is confusing as hell. I keep coming across dead links and old downloads and stuff that may not work. I REALLY don't like using stuff not linked from XDA as that is all I've known for many years (not to say other sites aren't reputable but you never know) I can follow instructions and figure out most stuff on my own but due to the in completion of alot of this stuff and dead links I am kinda stuck I am gonna give it another go tomorrow but in the meantime if someone wants to drop me a link or word of advice as to where to at least start it would be awesome. I am pretty handy generally with this kind of thing but I guess that goes to show you sometimes you are only as good as the tools and directions you are working with. Thanks XDA Community! :good:
Okay the first three.
3.lgnpst is the program you will need to use to fix the security error which was caused by removing bloat without unlocking bootloader.
2.teenybin is used with lgnpst to unlock bootloader, update partitions to jb, and install recovery. It doesn't install firmware but could be used to restore if a rom was copied to sd to flash.
3.freegee is used to unlock bootloader and install recovery on a working phone.
Next four.
1.dll are files needed by windows.
2.bin is the extension the file needs to be for using lgnpst.
3.kdz is stock firmware for use with lgflashtool (used mainly for international phones)
4.tot is the extension the stock firmware is released with which will be renamed to bin before using lgnpst.
In the additional info section of teenbin thread there is a click to show content button that will have have links and guide for lgnpst. Use the tSilenzio version and it will register the DLL files on install.

I do have to admit I don't fault my buddy too much for soft bricking this thing as of all the devices I've rooted or flashed to this seems the most confusing. And also it's very odd that if you remove BW without first unlocking the bootloader you get this error..... Why can't they all just be as easy as a Nexus? Lol.

A few other things that may help.
1.lgnpst is a pain with windows 8
2.it will not work with USB 3.0
3.be sure to right click lgnpst exe and run as admin
I got my OG right after release but had already been following forum, and would hate to have to jump in now and try to figure things out.

Well its especially difficult when someone just brings you a phone and you've never even seen it booted up and you don't know all the weird quirky rules it has (like if you uninstall GAPPS without unlocking the bootloader then you get a bootloop.) lol Otherwise it seems like a solid phone. It has almost the same specs as my Nexus 4.

This link is for a flashable zip of rooted stock jb. If you used the teenybin files with lgnpst then flashed it with recovery the end result would be stock rom with unlocked bootloader, root, and custom recovery.

Real quick.... So once I've got everything back to stock and get the boot loader unlocked.. Will I then be able to modify system stuff, uninstall bloat etc and avoid that evil security error boot loop?

Yes, once you're unlocked & rooted you will be good to go. I would recommend flashing an established rom and installing the GApps that are recommended. It would be a lot more convenient and less of a hassle.
Make sure you are using TWRP, CWM was causing bugs with flashing of some roms. Hope this helps.

Awesome and once I've flashed a good rom. Would that then circumvent any future boatloads caused by modifications etc.? So in other words are those proprietary (catches) cooked out when the devs set up a rom? I would imagine so. I know most of us folks hate that kinda thing... Lol
BTW any tips on a good solid stable Jelly Bean Rom? Would want it to be pretty stable since it's not my phone... Lol

Hey thanks again everyone! Got the phone fixed. A stock AT&T 4.1.2 Rom on there and root privileges intact. Everything is good to go. I actually kinda like the phone a lot.... I really want an LG G2..... Oooh yeah... Thanks again everyone and maybe some one will find the instructions in this thread helpful.
