[SOLVED]Galaxy S2 Screen Battery drain - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,guys. My dad recently give away his Galaxy S2,and I updated it to 4.1.2 android JB.I noticed that the battery drains faster than on ginger bread,I looked at the battery stats and it shows that the screen uses 44% of battery.Next day I checked it showed 56%.Is it normal?
BTW I went to bed when my phone battery was 89%.When I woke up it was 79%.I did the battery calibration by charging to 100% taking off the battery and putting it back on after 5min.But I don't see the difference after that. Please help!

Yes it's normal.Jb hogs on battery .You can follow the many battery saving tips that have been posted. If you came from GB i figure your battery must be pretty old.It might require a replacement.

Thanks very much, the phone is 2 years old probably I will replace the battery

i am just new to Android and suprised how dull the display is on my S2 at its lowest setting. Coming from Blackberry where my device was always at 10% brightness. its seems that blackberrys were brighter than my S2, both on the lowest settings.
That being said, i now have my S2 at full brightness and the battery drain is worse than i expected it to be. a small thing when the OS is so good and the whole phone works so fast. i was living in the dark ages. lol.
My device is 39% for screen and so maybe a new battery for you may help. make sure you get a official S2 battery and not a cheaper one from Ebay of that. found the cheap one to have low capaicty even if they say that they are the same or higher than the official ones.

[Q] Telus fascinate serious battery drain HELP!!!!!

Ive noticed serious battery drain since I first bought this fascinate from telus. On 2.1it lasted around 11 hours. Since upgrading to 2.2 leak, id say 8 hoirs max with only approx 1 hour of uusage and the rest on standby. I turned of sync, auto brightnrss and turned brightndss as.low as possible. I make sure no apps r running in the background. Yet it still dies superfast. Is this a issue with my battery thr phone itself or firmware or kernal. Its been a week of trying to find the problem so any help would b greatly appreciated. At tgis time im running 2.2 leak with all the files it came with and no root. Thx in advNce
And hour and 12 minutes with about 30 min of internwt surfing and im down to 80 percent WTF
I update OTA last week on Verizon to Froyo 2.2. My battery was overheating and draining like crazy from my CPU usage being at a constant 99%..
I found the source of the problem. An app I use for facebook called "FLOW". The CPU usage was cut to 20% when I killed it with "Advanced Task Killer".
I resolved the issue by: Opening Flow.. going to Preferences.. Notification Settings.. Refresh Type.. Checked Periodic Polling (I was using Gmail Experimental previously)
Hope this helps...

sounds about average for a fascinate....
I'm on telus as well and also have terrible battery life, I've found no fix other than completely turning off Data using the toggle when holding the power button. Flashing a new rom might fix this but I've been to scared to since I bricked a phone trying it the first time. Hopefully when/if ever we get a 2.3 update it fixes this
Does anyone know where one can get an extended battery for this? I picked one up but it's for the friggin Verizon US version, and the battery cover isn't compatible, even though the battery fits(camera doesn't align, speaker's not even close).
Seriously, the American counterpart's accessories have been my biggest frustration with this phone, next to battery life...
Thought I'd give this a bump. The battery life on this Telus Fascinate 4G is truly disappointing and jumping through hoops trying to find and kill apps and services with and without utilities is wasting far too much of my time.
Anybody get a good handle on this?
Bump for same problem.
Samsung Fascinate SCH-i500 Verizon
Running unmodified and unrooted. The phone itself works perfect. No problems other than the phone seriously eats battery. Yes the battery is still good and nothing wrong with it. Plugged in it charges super slowly. And the screen itself takes more than it provides. So i did the following.
A. Changed battery to a known working one.
B. Check with car charger and a home charger. As well as official samsung charger.
C. Gave a ROM a try. Running Dirty Unicorn. Lowered cpu to 800 max and 100 min.
D. Turned display to 50% Brightness.
My only try now is to try a different kernel or something. Im also thinking that the display itself is the culprit somehow eating to much voltage.
Or the gpu. The phones operating temps are good.
I have another post here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2430393 relating to where i have a USB problem and need help figuring it out. There has not been any replies. So i am taking upon myself to learn more. Ive worked with 3 Droid Milestones. Hopefully these two i500s will not be to hard. I need help on this new i500 to see if its not the motherboard. The charging port is on the motherboard and if this replacement eats batteries , then the point would be mute to use it for a working USB. A conundrum.
Do i try a different kernel or somthing else. Whats my next step.. Please help.

what else do you have running?
what is the battery life overall usage? and screen usage hours?
screen is always gonna be the highest consumer of your battery
50% still pretty high unless you are out in sunlight, I keep mine between 0 and 30 % unless in sunlight
you can try running the greenify app from playstore.
what king of life are you expecting to get? anywhere between 6hrs to 24 hours total phone battery life is about average depending on how heavy user or how much in standby mode.

3h 25m left
Screen 55%
Cell Standby 9%
SystemUI 7%
com.maxmpz.audioplayer 7%
Android System 7%
Its defiantly got something wrong as even though it says 56% if I unplug it, it will die in about 10 min. Even with a fully charged battery it does the same. Yes i also waited until 100% and wiped batt stats and at 3% left wiped stats. Screen is in standby

I had installed the program and it didn't really show anything abnormal. Although after installing the Bat Meter, when i shutdown it killed the phone till i ODIN. So tried on the other phone as well. Same thing. Install it and compared notes. Reboot phone and had to ODIN. So maybe bad app? Well whatever. I didn't see anything unusual. Although I did notice something strange about the phone that's bad with charging. I already eliminated the battery as the problem as well as charger. But the phone that is eating battery faster than it can charge, it gets warmer at idle than the other phone. It charged just super super tiny faster than the battery eats using just idle display on lock-screen. As well this phone also with a fully charged battery will read 100% But after about 21 minutes of poweramp at 33% volume on headphones will read about 52%. Then sitting rest at idle no display from 52% down to about 14% popup around another 5 min. Then completely dead in about 3 minutes. And the phone is pretty warm. Today it was ambient temp of around 87* outside and sitting in shade and it was hot enough that it wasn't comfortable on my cheek for more than 20 seconds. Half the time the temps are normal. Now remember I'm not running overclock and actually under clocked to 800. Ive tried 3 different roms with diff kernels and same. Could it possibly be a bad heat-sink? And the extra heat is killing battery?
[Q] Battery Drain
I recently was given a Fascinate and am having similar problems. I was told the phone had a bad battery, so I ordered a replacement. Once I got the new battery in, I flashed the phone with the Carbon ROM [the phone was unlocked, but running the OTA 2.3.5 I believe]. Everything seemed to be working fine the first week or two, but now there appears to be a serious battery drain or leak after I power the phone down. I can charge the phone to 100%, power it on and use it for a period of time, then power it down with 90% or more battery life, but when I turn the phone back on, the battery will either be really low, or completely dead, where the phone won't respond at all until I plug the charger back in.
I reflashed the phone with an AOKP ROM to see if that'd make a difference, but it didn't. I tried using the first battery and the drain/leak still persists. The commonality between the two roms is the Devil kernel, so I'm going to flash a different ROM with a different kernel to see if that makes a difference. I also installed the app mentioned above to log the battery stats/usage to see if anything stands out there.
Has anyone experienced something similiar - the Fascinate consuming battery life while powered off?
Yeah the power off leak does seem to exist.
Can't remember the cause though.
I've not tried to really confirm,, but try popping the battery out then back in after you have powered off,,, then check after it has sat overnight to see if drain still exist..
Mine i just always leave on a charger overnight.
.
[Q]
Thanks for the reply. I'll try that. I've left the phone on today, just put it to sleep during periods of inactivity, and the battery is currently at 75% with occasional mild use after 8+ hours "on".
[edit 11-29-13]
After almost two weeks of use, I can confirm that if I power the phone down and do nothing else, the battery will continue to drain to 0%. If I power the phone down then remove and replace the battery, it's fine. It's an extra step, but it works. Thanks again.

[Q] Its official. My Galaxy S2 is busted.:(

Hi guys just wanted to say my galaxy s2 is officially busted. Its still in working order do not get me wrong but something wrong with the hardware i think because i have flashed so many roms and stock roms to try and resolve the problem and i cant. My display is always sky high in battery usage and i cant get it down to save the life of it. Got everything on the lowest that is brightness settings and still nothing. Spoken to samsung and they say its not suppose to be like that and that display always high and as high as 60% is not right.
What can i do please cause i love the phone and it really pisses me off that it gets drained so bloody quickly? Shall i just sell it and get an HTC sensation instead or shall i send it to Samsung and be patient for ten days without my phone

Id say just wait for the new phone, the galaxy s II obliterates the Sensation. This coming from a person who's owned both devices.
About your display problem, sounds pretty weird never heard of an issue like that before.

What is your average display "Time on" on "Battery usage" when you're almost running out of battery?
How quickly does it drain? Don't you have warranty to get it replaced if it's actually faulty? I can't really decide if that's the case from your non-sense post.

My display is high as well with android Os in second most of the time and its normal, cause I use the phone a lot so obviously the screen will be high.
I get around 13-17 hours heavy usage so am happy I dont think its anything to do with rom flashing unless you get lower then 10 hours battery life
sorry i should of made it more clearer. Once i charge my handset as soon as i start using it you can see the percentage drop rapidily. i go into the battery usage and the display is at its highest and draining the battery. And that is with brightness to low settings. If i do not use the phone it can last me for a whole day and a half. But im to scared to use it for browsing and thats over wifi cause i know it will not last me to long...i know the handset is a battery drainer but come on the display should not be as high as it is..and with the warranty i have put the stock rom back so can they find out still that i had my handset rooted if i was to send it in

If you get two hours with screen on, than that's normal and not a hardware failure. Use white backgrounds as little as possible.
Apparently they could, I believe they some kind of count record of the amount of roms you have flashed and the only way to reset is by using a 'JIG' if you search the forums should be able to find more info on the 'JIG'

Looks like SAMOLED+ consume most power on SGS2. I thought it's normal. Just know mine also having the same problem.
Sucks to be the guy who receives all these problems. I suggest, you just get a refund, as you should be ashamed of yourself if you sell a defective SGS2.
If you like the sensation, get it. It's also good, as I usually borrow it from my sister when we feel like exchanging phones for a few days. Sensation's default battery life is a little worse than the SGS2, as I only get 18hrs-1d 4hrs in the Sensation(still not rooted/default ROM) against the 1d - 1d 10hrs of the SGS2(Leomar ROM + Ninphe 2.2/undervolted).
My sister just got those chichitec 1900mAh batteries, and she said battery life on the Sensation improved(Only her word, as we have yet to exchange phones again this weekend). Now, all it needs is an undervolt + good ROM and the Sensation's battery should last a longer if not the same than the SGS2. Though you'll surely miss the SAmoled+ quality if you compare it with the SLCD of the Sensation, hope HTC improve on this department, they should have used IPS instead of SLCD.
A little tip if your getting the Sensation, is to thoroughly check its touchscreen sensitivity. My Sensation, is a little buggy sometimes, sense lagging/resetting + weird touch sensitivity. Though, I think it should be fix by flashing a good ROM + Kernel. Good Luck.

what is your display percentage and how can you manage to get so many hours out of it? any tips? i will be posting screen shots tomorrow for you guys to see what im talking about
If you have been using the phone the screen will always be #1 on the list, as its the part that needs the most power.
The phone will get about 6-8h of screen on time total before the battery is flat, but it will depends on mobile coverage (weak coverage will drain faster), if you are using heavy data, wifi usage (will be better than using mobile data on a weak signal or if you are pushing a lot of data round).
Generally radios will eat up the juice.
Also games will hurt.
You can use CPUspy to see what states the CPU is in, and if its going to deep sleep.
Also in settings > about phone > battery use, you want the awake and screen on lines to match up as much as you can.
(Music will keep the phone awake while the screen is off, and so will downloading stuff etc)

The truth is, that what you report as a problem, is not a problem, it is simply a fact. SAMOLED displays drain batteries like hell. Mine does exactly the same. Like you, I was starting to think that my unit was somewhat faulty, but soon fund out that it was not. In fact, the truth is that the galaxy s2, if left on with the acreen at normal brghtness, fully drains its battery in a matter of 5 hours or so. It is due mainly to the display draining something like 0.8 Watts, alone.
People saying they get almost 2 days use simply tell bullocks, because there's no way of actually using this phone and getting more than about 15 hours autonomy from its battery.

Samsung support/RMA process has worked very well for me. Third phone already. Maybe ask them to replace yours?
I'm still confused over there. You're just talking without making any sense at all. The only thing I've got from all this is that you're complaining about display being the highest on the battery drain list. That means nothing. Or not much at least. Those values need to give a total of 100%, so if you're using your phone, and display is the highest, your phone is working really good, and you don't have the AOS bug. Which means your device is not faulty, you just don't understand the battery statistics screen. Pardon me if I understood your problem wrong, but if I didn't, just carry on with your life, your phone has no problems at all. I get around 1.5 days with medium usage, and I think that's normal for a phone like this.

You are not being rude at all. I have flashed yesterday batistas new rom and using jeffrey speedfrey kernel and i have fully charged the phone and calibrated it as well. I am going to let it die down and recharge it again to the max and see how it goes after that as well. My point of this though is as below on the screenshot. The display is always in that percentage and that is what has me worried. I have checked on other posts and the most that they get is 35 to 50%. I have the lowest brightness settings and it still that high..That is why i am asking if there is something wrong with my phone. I am getting good battery life so far just with medium usage and having wifi on since i have charged it but the display is what worries me. If someone could help me with these pointers as well i would appreciate it:
Does underclocking with Setcpu help battery life even more?
And what do you guys think of the screenshot?
i know this sounds silly but how does someone close a thread once they opened it i have a few i want to close..
Thanks again to everyone for you help..
It has dropped to 76% after 10 hours and a couple hours of screen usage. I don't think that there is a problem.

[Q] Batery calibration issues.

I've been using my s3 for the past one week and my device shows 99% assoon as i remove my charger! i've tried changing the rom, erased my Battery stats, recalibated my battery using playstore apps. even though it shows 99%. please help! by battery life is worst!
All GS3's are like this only. The battery actually never charges to 100. Its purely cosmetic.
Please tell me you've actually tried searching for this before posting since there are literally dozens of threads and discussions revolving around it.
Physically it's very simple. If a battery is 100% full, it's as full as it can get. This is not true for everything but for most consumer-related stuff. (Airplane turbines, reactors and other industry-machines see it as a maximum value for long-time usage but can go quite a bit above)
If you unplug it, your phone starts draining battery since -surprise,surprise- it needs power. So the battery cannot stay at 100% if a (however tiny) part has been removed.
Phones that remain at 100% after unplugging for some time are lying to you to make them look better. And you don't want a manufacturer lying to you, do you?

Better check of you have rogue apps in the background or your screen brightness, my batterylife is quite good (about 2 days with medium/heavy) use. Running stock firmware.

That's perfectly ok. Relax Been discussed here already...
PS absolutely no need to calibrate the battery
This happens to me as well but don't fret over it.... Calibrations should be done regularly but not overly or it'll stress your battery more than necessary.
You do not calibrate your battery regular the year is 2012 not 1995 .
Battery auto calibrates itself use it ignore it .

[SGS2][GUIDE] GT-I9100 Phone shut-off at 30%-50% battery issue

Device: Samsung Galaxy S2 (GT-I9100) T-mobile carrier- unlocked, Rooted ,Running stock rom with a Philz touch recovery
Problem occurred after about a week of purchasing a new battery since the old one got swelled... but i have two brand new batteries now both are not original but good quality (1 Year Warranty) With both batteries I had the Problem
Let me explain the problem :
______________________
Device would go off in at a certain battery level from 30%-50% (as for my experience):fingers-crossed:
To turn the device ON plugging in is compulsory... but then the battery would be Completely drained..
Also if you try to do a restart at a battery level which is closer to the sudden death the after re boot the battery will be at a extremely low level and wont rise...
I searched all of i can to find a cure to this because the last thing u expect in a situation is your phone dying?
Apparently the problem seems to be that the phone is reading the battery wrong? about a 40% so simple do a calibration Nope Nothing not even a change...
Here is what I tried

Turned it on using a Fully charged battery that i charged separately and i used it for some time max brightness max vol radio and gps wifi bluetooth etc. to drain the battery and at 38% phone started to flicker and turned off again:crying: (no Sim or Memory inserted no apps downloaded)
But i decided to go again i plugged it in ( never changed the batt) and let it charge for about 95% and turned all on again and this time i put on my simcard and memory and did all what i did except that i downloaded whats app and instagram. and also when it reached below 55% i Played some music and locked the phone (NO SCREEN LOCK USED) and after some time i checked batt was at 38% :fingers-crossed: immediately i locked it back and left it again....
Viola !!!!!!! last time i checked it was 15% low batt warning came ( haven't seen it in weeks) and then the battery drop was a bit fast and at 12% the screen got a little flicker so i plugged it in.. I think the problem is halfway solved, ill let the battery go some cycles and update soon.. also i will attach some screen shots off the battery level too and take a close look at the time and battery level after 15% on the pics
:victory:

So yesterday I plugged the device until it reached about 85% and unplugged it when I was going to sleep, and at about 8 o'clock this morning i noticed that the battery level has risen to 96% , I think that is because the phone slowly gets to know the battery level correctly.. and right now it 11.08 am and I had turned on Mobile Hotspot and Data from 8 am , battery level is 82%.
I'll update again tonight when the battery drains completely

Can you also share the SoT ? I know it depends on how a person uses the phone but still I want to have an idea. I might also try this to have a better battery life. I also once tried that exact stock rom but without even charging completely, I went on to another ROM. So I am gonna give it another try today . :good:

phone goes off only when im using it?
Can a Expert please look into this matter and help me please. looks like all what I did has been useless

SoT=Screen on time. And no I don't have this problem. But I want to try the stock rom so I wanted to see what your screen on time is.

btw its charging now so ill give you a number when the battery drains completely
I have the same problem. when I reboot my device in most of cases the battry level showed is a 10/30% lower than before and also my phone shuts off showing 10% percent or less and the sreen brightness goes a bit crazy for 2 secs before it shuts off. I have the original Samsung battery but I also bought the 2000mAh extended kit but now this issue happens in both of them I've read that I have to callibrate battery so I will try this and post results
1. Turn off your phone.
2. Fully Charge.
3. When getting 100% signal, unplug quickly.
4. Pull off the battery and put it anywhere.
5. Wait for 180 seconds exactly (be careful )
6. Meanwhile, take this opportunity to dust off the internal compartment.
7. Put back the battery on the right side.
8. Turn on the phone.
9. Pray the Battery god
10. ... and voilà !

I did it and my results were this. My phone shuts off at 5%, slightly less than other times. I rebooted it once while 80% percent and remained the same. Battery lasted 2h and 40 mins with medium/high usage
I would say it fixed something for me but not a lot. Now im going to try it with the 2000mAh samsung battery
Edit1: now after another full cycle the battery lasted for more or less 3 hours with medium usage and shutted off at 8% now im going to try on my 2000mAh battery that had an 8% and it shutted of normally with the shutting off screen and without weird screen brightness tweaks

Well I think it worked for you because you had a Original Samsung Battery Right?
In SL a Original batt would only come with the phone :crying: Fakes have invaded,,
So i read some where that fakes dont have the original capacity? so if it is then it would match perfectly !
so now im in hunt of a original hopefully this is not a phone problem
No its not definetly a phone problem and it isn't a big deal to find an original samsung battery for sgs2 however the Samsung 2000 mAh battery kit its waay harder to find and the ones that I found are more expensive than when it came out
Yeah, I definitely think the problem is with your battery, so you just need to replace it.
Btw guys, what is your general Screen on Time with your standard 1650mah battery (not extended)? I'm running CM13 and I barely get 2h on a single charge, but then I read reviews from the early days of S2 and for instance here they have 4h24 browsing time (with screen at 50% brightness) or 8h video playback.
Is it all related to being a different ROM, or my battery just needs a retirement? Being a different ROM would impact so much on the Screen on Time? Also, I have auto-brightness always enabled, would that have such a significant impact?
Greetings
EDIT: Since I generally use the phone indoors I don't think that would be the difference in such a different Screen on Time

With 1650 mAh and on CM13 nightlies, my best so far is 2h and 28 mins with brightness at between %0 and %25 and only wifi is on.
That 4 hour SoT is probably on gingerbread though.

Being gingerbread would make so much of a difference? It's like twice as much SoT...
Thanks anyways

Never used SGS2 on gingerbread but it is possible I think. I remember reading on forums that people started to get worse battery life with ICS and with JB it got even worse. So yeah probably possible.

Hi Bolshoi! I will definetly update the SOT on the stock rom after the new battery arrives! I asked one of my friends who is in Netherlands to buy and send me a batt. Regards!

Im From Sri Lanka Achimakulo its so rare to find a Genuine Samsung battery for a older device like mine and even if i found one its either old or way too much priced
I think its because my device is so rare in this country
Is it fixed now??
See attachment
battery level drop is natural? ?

Question Poor battery life recently.

Since the .219 update I've noticed the battery life is draining very fast. I barely get 2 hours of On-Screen-Time and when the phone is on standby it will use 20% overnight, meaning that I have to charge 2x a day. When I first got the phone I would charge it once a day and it would hold atleast 1,5 day on full charge.
I've tried: 1) System repair, 2) factory reset, 3) battery stamina mode help only a little, 4) contacted Xperia support that didn't really help.
Anyone experienced something similar?

Deleted phone-drop post
Since updating, I'm getting a lot of ANRs for file intensive apps and they seem to drain the battery faster.
Cellular performance seemed improved on my carrier (US T-Mobile) but it's a hot mess roaming on Vodafone UK.
Yes have been noticing mine draining much faster than it used to. Not as bad as having to charge 2x a day but I now barely make it through the day compared to getting 1.5 days previously.
I have similar feeling. My battery works worse than before. And I do not mean the fact that of course as every battery it is getting worse over time, but it's life dropped suddenly after update
same here... :-(
got the version 61.1.A.11.88 2 days ago, seems better now

Battery life still poor on this firmware, it drains much faster than my Xperia 1ii.... If enough people complain to Sony then they might do something, I have made a complaint to Sony UK here, Cheers
Battery life still bad on Android 12.. Getting 3-4hrs SOT... is that normal for this phone??
