I apologize if this has already been discussed. When ever I'm on an AOSP based ROM (doesn't matter which one), and I'm in an area with poor service where my phone goes from 4g to 3g to 1x to no data, when ever I leave that area my phone will only pick up 3g. I am in a strong 4g area but no matter what I try, turning off data, turning off/on 4g, airplane mode and reboot still no 4g.I can restore my back up of the factory ROM and have immediate 4g. I can then restore a back up of my AOSP based ROM and again have 4g. I can reproduce this on an AOSP ROM by turning off data and 4g and let the phone find 3g. Once that happens I turn 4g back on and the phone will not pick up 4g again unless I go back through the restore process. Again I apologize if this has been discussed but I couldn't find it anywhere. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks !

Hello Just wanted to say thank you to all the peope who support this awesome website.
I got my TBolt yesterday and i know people have said they have had weird reception for 4g and what not. Luckily my house is in the center of a 4g area so in my house i have had perfect 4g coverage but today i went to town and i looked like it was trying to switch from 3g, 1x, or 4g but unsuccefully as it would only stay for a few seconds then disapear. Does this have to do with Verizon problems? if not what should i do?
Thanks
I was having the same issues going back to 3G from 4G. I would get no icons on the top of the screen and could only make phone calls. Tech support had me do a factory restore and that fixed it right away. Very annoying for sure to have to set up your phone all over again. If this keeps happening I'm not sure I will keep the phone. I am not about to factory reset every time this network handoff issue occurs.
Tech support told me they are working on a fix and I don't need to hard reset it yet. To me its silly to hard reset if its just going to happen again.
i was having similar issues and tech support had me take out the battery for a min and then put it back in and boot up and i had 3g back
Battery pull didn't work for me...
thanks guys battery pull seemed to work well!
Local VZW store said a national tech support email went out this afternoon regarding TB problems switching and dropping data. Email said the fix is on the network side and the phones have to be hard reset after 1PM mountain time to be fixed. Sounds fishy, but maybe worth a try.
I saw this linked in another thread. I take no credit for it.

It helped me a little bit with my sporadic 3G connections here at work.
It appears vzw's eHPRD's network is down which is why data has been dropping once a tbolt is out of LTE coverage.
Use the ##778# menu (hit call after ##778#)-->password is 000000-->modem settings-->Rev A-->choose enable-->hit the menu button on the tbolt and commit changes
This is from the androidcentral forums. I can't post links yet, but a quick search over there will reveal the specifics.
This forces the device to use EVDO instead of eHPRD so you'll lose simultaneous voice/data, but at least if you're not in LTE coverage you'll get data. The device will still connect to LTE if it's available.
This worked on my device and my wife's.
I noticed that even in some areas of the same city that this network error is causing no access to 3g. I tested it by following the guide and sure enough the 1x switched to 3G. I hope Verizon gets this up and running. I think this is also causing calls to drop.

God Dam ****ing verizon biooootch, angered me so much saying i couldnt get on 3g because I voided my warranty by doing *#*#4636#*#* and shutting of LTE. OMG I wanted to punch her through the phone.
I've been having an issue and I don't know if it's related, but it sounds like it.
I've been turning my phone to "CDMA auto (PRL)" whenever I go out for the day to conserve battery. But there's this one place that seems to disconnect me whenever I go. It's happened twice now, but when I go there, I lose data service and can't manage to get it back even after switching to 4G. The first time it happened, it was out from about 11pm to 3am. Today, though, I switched it to 4G and it came back, along with 3G.
Now, the problem here is that my girlfriend's Thunderbolt is fine during all of this. I'll lose 3G, but hers will stay connected even though we'll be in the same location. I don't understand what would be different about mine than hers. :S
Hey DJComent try pinggolf12's fix it worked for me.
I recently upgraded from the Incredible to the Rezound and find that when 4G not available, the signal drops down to 1X. Not only that, it seems to stay in 1X even when 4G is available. How can I get the phone to drop to 3G when 4G not available? The Incredible ran in 3G in the same areas that the Rezound drops to 1X. What do I have to set to get it into 3G?
Thanks for help.
both my GF and I have been having trouble with this on both our phones... We both live and work in 4G coverage, pretty strong coverage too. Yet we both see 4g drop out to 3g or 1x. Its very random, and I've had it happen right in the middle of browsing the web. (All of a sudden a page takes forever to load or doesnt and the phone acts like it has no data connection, I go to the home screen and see that I am all of a sudden on 1x..)
I recently read an article that talked about how VZW actually has a pretty major issue they need to resolve pertaining to authentication on the LTE network. I don't know the exact mechanics of it, but basically the authentication fails and you get booted off the LTE network until the phone tries to hop on it again. Right now, the two phones I have personal experiance with do not try very often to get back on and it often takes going into the wireless settings page and selecting mobile networks and going in and out of that screen a couple times, or if it is being stubborn, airplane mode, site for a minute, and then back on. Occasionally I have to reboot the phone.
It really irritated me good last night when I really needed the data connection for GPS navigation because I took a wrong turn in an unfamiliar area..
Sometimes going in and out of airplane mode helps or restart.
I'm not going to say look on the forums. Here is a quote from another thread and linked another thread.
had the same issue and fixed by this.

phone will reboot and you should get 3G back
This changes your network from eHRPD back to EVDO Rev.A. For LTE phone owners, eHRPD causes 3G to die (most of the time anyway) when the LTE network has problems. Get back on normal EVDO and you're good to go.
^ from Jntdroid on another forum (not sure if we're allowed to post to other forums here) I'm not positive on where he got it from, but this is a capability of all HTC 4G phones
I've had occasional issues with being down to 1X, but even that was only during nationwide 4G network issues, definitely get in touch with VZW about that... not that they have enough sense to fix anything *sigh*

Good luck. It's what fixed mine.

Same issue here. Only happens when I go from a 4G area to a 3G area. I end up getting stuck in 1x. The phone switches fine from 3G to 4G. But when going back to a 3G only area, it by-passes 3G and I get 1x.
No toggling helps. I have to reboot to get 3G back. I also tried that fix posted above. It does not help. Called verizon again tonight.
The strange part is before we had that 4G outage a few months ago, the phone would switch just fine. Now it's a pain in the ass.
Sorry it isn't helping. It worked in mine and done exactly the way it told me. Go from 3-4g now without an issue. No 1x like before

Does anyone else experience this or know how to fix it?
I get weak LTE most of the time (2 bars)but when i do HSPA only for 4G, it gives me full bars. I also get network/modem freezing where i have to restart the data connection to get signal back.
Running stock gb and stock kernal, rooted with dag kernal and running cwm base recovery.

Yeah, I see the same thing. Manually turning data on/off seems to work for me.
-Edit-
What I mean, is that manually turning data on/off seems to reset to LTE. It's not an acceptable fix, I know, but it gets the job done for now.
yeah same here i'm on rogers and when i enable LTE i get 2 bars and as soon as i put gsm/hspa auto mode boom 5 bars. i called rogers and they told me to factory reset my phone, i did helped but a couple of weeks later same problem. i don't want to have to factory rest my phone every couple of weeks... they also told me if the problem persists to send it to repair. it's a brand new phone! and it seems like i'm not the only one witht his problem so. anyway the ics update should come out this month and hopefully it will get rid of this problem.
Hey there,
I've recently switched from Viper Rez ROM to one of the vanilla CM9 builds, but can't get 4G working on it. When I switch to LTE mode under the mobile network settings it goes to Roaming and drops connection entirely. I'm able to get 3G fine. I am on the firmware from the official ICS release as far as I know. I've tried disabling and re-enabling Airplane Mode as was suggested in another thread but it didn't do anything for me.
Any other suggestions? I love running CM9 but no 4G is kind of a deal breaker, and I know it's supposed to be working.
Thanks!
With AOSP and AOKP Roms if you even venture into the mobile network settings you will lose 4G. the only way I know how to get it back is to flash back to a sense Rom, ensure the settings are switched to include 4G and then flash back to CM9.
Really? That's a bummer. I like to keep mine on 3G since the 4G radios drain battery faster and I don't really need 4G service most of the time. I'll try what you said and see if it fixes. Thanks! In the meantime, other suggestions are welcome.
well that's not entirely true. yes, for aokp, but cm9 builds don't seem to have as much issue with it.
i'm referring to the previous post that said that you lose 4g if you enter mobile network settings. not the problem you are having of not being able to get on 4g
I have a VS985, rooted, on a custom ROM currently. The other day, I noticed I was only in 3G on my phone in an area where I usually get full 4G signal (tower is about half a mile from my apartment complex). It has refused to switch back to 4G ever since.
Here's what I've done so far:
Reflashed current ROM
Flashed new ROM
Flashed modem
Airplane Mode On/Off
Switched Networks to GSM Only, LTE/CDMA, and Global
Tried turning data on and off
Pulled SIM card out while phone was off
Access Points reset to default
Any other options? Should I KDZ back to 12B and start from scratch?

Sounds to me like you may have fried the 4g in the sim card, happens occasionally. Vzw should give you a new one no problem.
Turns out the 4G would not work even with a new SIM. Replaced under warranty.
