Hey Guys,
I own a Samsung Galaxy S4 from Verizon and have followed the guide on how to root it posted on the forums. For a while things were good. My phone booted up with the correct loading screen and my device detected that I was on an official kernel. Now for reasons I'm not sure of, my phone is saying that the kernel is custom and the lock icon has returned when I restart or cold boot my phone. I'm not running custom firm ware, I'm running a stock Verizion kernel. I tried to delete SuperUser, but it isn't installed. My binaries for SuperSU are up-to-date. I'm still rooted, but I would like to get rid of the unlock icon when I boot up and I would like to get the system to recognize that this is an official kernel.
Also ES File Explorer is unable to mount r/w privilages on my phone in order to delete busybox and su so that I could try to re-root the phone again. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!!
Theres no way so far to get rid of it. Mine actually goes back and for between custom and official all the time. Maybe when the bootloader gets unlocked it will do away with it, but until then it does no harm. So if you want to root, that's the price we pay.

Most of the time mine is gone. Maybe once a week I might see it.

So I managed to get rid of it. I'm not sure if it's permanent, but here's what I did. I couldn't delete the stuff in the root directory (and this was before I found solid explorer which has better root access programming than es does). So I did a factory reset and found that that worked for a while, but then I noticed that downloading Triangle Away seemed to be causing the problem because the lock icon returned after I installed it and gave it root access. So I deleted it and chose the 'unroot' option from the list of options in supersu. Then I re-rooted the phone using the guide. Now the lock icon hasn't returned, and the device status under the about phone menu says that my firmware is the official one. Another thing I noticed is that I'm running an older version of busybox (version 1.17.1 I think, as installed by motochopper).
Again I'm not sure what I did differently, or changed as a result of my method, but it seems to have worked. Perhaps someone with more development knowledge can let me know what's happened for my own personal information.
I didnt realize at that time, that the update he was doing would block root. If I factory reset, will it put me back to pre-update so that when i boot up the phone I can root it first thing? Thanks for any help.

From what I have read the answer is NO. I think you are SOL until a new root method is found.
So basically all I can do is take it back, pay 35 buck restock fee, get another phone and root as soon as I get it setup and not install that update?

I believe that is your only option, yes. To my knowledge, there is no way to revert back and you're stuck. Unless you'd like to just keep your current phone and wait until someone roots the new update, but your only other option would be to exchange it.
In your opinion, do you think the devs will find a way to crack this update and obtain root?

Correct. That is *IF* the new phone doesn't already have the update installed, or the sales rep doesn't install the update while activating it and getting it ready for you.
Rumor has it that they already have root, but aren't releasing how until they can find a way to also unlock/patch the boot loader. They are said to be afraid of having Samsung/Verizon block this root method before they can use it to unlock the boot loader. Will they ever get it? Will they ever release the root method? That is anyone's guess.
So for now, it looks like the 16gig DEV edition direct from Samsung, without warranty, is the only option if you definitely want to root and flash custom roms now and "forever". But is it still available? or did they sell out yet?
Spoke with my rep and he told me bring it back, exchange it and all he will do is activate it and hand it right over to me and will not install the update. Now once I do get the new phone without the update and obtain root, can or will that verizon update still try and come thru and ask me to install it?
You can block the OTA updater with titanium backup. I'm not on a stock ROM, so I don't remember the updater app name.

That sucks. You gotta keep your eye on those reps :cyclops:
i never let any sales person set up, activate or even power up any phone i buy. if they chose to do so i cancel the order and buy on line where it comes sealed. i always tell them i'm in a rush and i'll take care of activating it afterwards. only one has ever refused and i told him to cancel the sale since he decided to open a product i purchase without my consent. he did get me a new one after that.

Ok, got a new S4 and this worked !!
Ok, everyone I got a new S4 and activated at Verizon which it immediately started download pretty much as soon as it was turned on. I immediately disabled mobile data, turned it off and then took out the sim card. Once I got home, I hooked this baby up to my PC and rooted...success, finally! I used the I545 all-in-one-root tool which includes OUDS clockwork. http://www.droid-life.com/2013/05/30/all-in-one-root-tool-released-for-verizon-galaxy-s4/
My questions is I have installed ROM Manager so that I could do a backup, but when I first open ROM manager, it says I need to install a custom recovery even though I have OUDS clockwork built in. Do I need to install clockwork from within the ROM manager app? I can reboot into recovery, but its the OUDS "generic" recovery, for lack of a better word. Is that recovery good to go for backing up, flashing another ROM or do I need to use the ROM manager to install CWM from with the app itself? Hope this makes sense. Thanks everyone!!
I'm a VZW rep and every time I activate a new S4, the update automatically starts downloading and there's NO way to tell it to "differ" to a different time.
Trust me, its not OUR fault. It just happens sadly :-\
I too hope devs get a way to root past this OTA because I have friends that would like me to root for them, but the OTA just muscles its way through.
I haven't upgraded anyone to an S4 today, but will report back with more info when I do. I'm pretty sure that after we activate the phone, the download starts and the notification just sits there until you click it (then it updates) or if you restart the device, it may force the update. I'll test on my next customer and let y'all know the real answer

My experience with the update is that it will tell you the download is ready and at that point you can postpone it to a later time. It even gives you a little wheel to select when to install the update. The phone is still completely rootable during that time. When the notification comes back you can again postpone until a later time.

That's what happened to me. During the initial setup it was downloading the OTA update. As soon as I could, I enabled "Airplane mode" to kill the update, but no, it had already downloaded and asked if it was OK to install.
I deferred it until 1:00 AM and immediately started the rooting process. Got root, installed SuperSU Pro and enabled Survival mode. I also installed Voodoo OTA RootKeeper, but that wasn't necessary.
So I'm now running stock with superuser available and protected. Unfortunately, no custom recovery.
Since I have been doing smartphones, I have NEVER updated, I wait until someone has tried it. and even then, I wait for a dev to cook it up. And everyone better hope you do not have to do any replacements thru the carrier, you WILL get a bootloader locked device with the newest release, NO bootloader fix.
Need to find alternatives.

Yeah, I ordered my S4 online, and it let me defer the update. It downloaded, then said ready to install would you like to install now or later? I set the timer to 12 hours, rooted, installed recovery, flashed AOKP, and bam, no worrying about OTA updates.

What I suggest is what I did.
Do not place the sim into the phone.
My phone came from Wirefly.com without the sim card installed.
Power up without sim card, boot directly to download mode, connect to pc usb port, run Odin, follow rooting procedure.
Only after you freeze SDM using titanium backup, should you consider inserting the sim card.
Also while on wifi samsung will ask to install update, say no.
P. S. I installed samsung drivers, and Odin. I did not install kies which I have read also tries to install the update.
Today I received an OTA update to 10e. I will see how it goes today and report back with any findings.
It may just be my imagination but the phone seems to run hotter on 10e

as far as i can tell besides google drive and a few extra apps and removing root, wasn't much.. speaking of root, i was P'O'd and just flashed to v10b on the hunt for the almighty bootloader unlock.. on v20b now, irrelevant.. has anyone tried rooting after a factory reset? i've seen mixed posts of having root once updated.. i used cydia impactor to root on v10d.. after update root was gone, tried running it again but it kicked up errors.. su could not be found.. i'm waiting another 30 minutes before reverting to stock for the time being.. i'm willing to test it if no one else has but it won't be for a few days.. honestly tired of messin with it for now..
I just got this phone today and it automatically updated to the 10e version. I didn't even have the opportunity to root it at all. I've heard that cydia was the best way to root it,, do you think that would still work? Also, which is the best guy to use to unlock my boot loader with 10e and it being MetroPCS..any suggesitons? I've been reading but would like some useful opinions if thats okay.
Okay, so I finally got the update today. I was on the stock v10d, and rooted. I opened Titanium and unfroze all of the junk I had disabled. Then I told it to go ahead and apply the update. It rebooted and started to update, and I got the fallen down android with exclamation point. Hold power and restart. Boots back into my v10d, except now I somehow have the inverted touch screen again. What? I mean, I know can fix the touch screen easy enough, but what gives? Don't know why the update fails, and I especially don't know why I get the inverted touch. Any insight here?

I think you still have the euro recovery installed, that's why you got the wonky screen. The boot or recovery images will cause the funk.
The update will fail because you have the 2nd init cwm or because you have made changes to the system apk file.
I have a cwm backup of 10e plus the radio files. I know the 10e is in my thread themed lgms769 ROM.
I'm not to sure where I uploaded the 10e radio. Lol I just remembered it's in my themed ROM thread as well. It's not in the first post, look around the end of the thread for the files.

I am weary. Every time there is an update, I have to do hours of research to find the latest work-around to carry my rooted phone into the next version. Now with the advent of the ISIS wallet, my phone did not want to allow me to use the app because it detected my phone was rooted. I've had enough; I just want to return my phone to the factory rom, so that future updates are less of a hassle for me.
My Verizon Note II phone is running Android Version 4.1.2. It was rooted using the Team Win Recovery Project rom with ODIN. Yesterday, I unrooted my phone using Chainfire's SuperUser app. My phone appears to be working normally and there are nearly no signs that it was ever rooted in ODIN Mode. The only giveaway is that TWRP bootup is still there. I cannot successfully update my phone to the next version, and I believe the TWRP bootup has something to do with that. I want to return my phone to factory default. I thank you for any assistance you can provide me with this.

jcollier, thank you so much for the reply. I visited the thread you mentioned. I'm going to use the information I gathered there to attempt to restore my phone to factory default. The only problem I ran into there is that the link for the 4.1.2 VRAMC3 rom is not working (something about too many downloads and trying again in 24 hours). I really don't want to wait that long just to see if the message will change. I've since gone to the sammobile.com website to see if I can glean something usable from there. Thank you again for your help.
So my VWZ S4 crapped out on me. About 2 weeks ago, the USB port died completely. I bought some replacement batteries and and external charger and figured I would just swap out the battery every day. Last week, the microphone seemed to go too. On every call, my voice sounded "tinny" and robotic. I brought it to a Verizon store and the rep offered to send me a warranty replacement (I only had 3 days left before the 1 year warranty expired!).
The problem I have is that I had the MDK bootloader unlocked and had a custom ROM install. When I get the replacement phone in a few days, I will have to send my old one back to Verizon. The guy at the store told me I had to unroot and get the phone back to stock, otherwise Verizon charges a $300 penalty (ouch!).
My main problem it that I don't have USB access. It's completely dead. I was wondering if these steps would work:
(I'm currently running Vanir ROM and latest CWM)
1.) Flash TW 4.4.2 Stock Verizon I545VRUFNC5 (found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2721118)
2.) Download/run Triangle Away to reset the Flash Counter.
3.) Use the SuperSU settings to "Full Unroot"
4.) OTA update that will lock bootloader???? (I think this is where I am screwed)
Any other thoughts or suggestions?
to me that sounds legit on how it should be done. or even doing the Kies way of update after you put stock (any bl version) or buy a usb charging port and microphone and fix the phone. couple bucks on ebay or amazon n an easy fix
FordNate, I wish I had the technical skills to replace both. Unfortunately, I do not!
I wonder if this method will be good enough for Verizon. I don't know that this will re-lock the bootloader if I do the steps above?

It should, since the bootloader was never unlocked anyway. Loki was a convenient workaround.

Thanks. Sounds good. Do you know for a fact that there will be an OTA update to take if I flash the TW 4.4.2 Stock Verizon I545VRUFNC5. Should I flash something else instead?

Me neither. I'm not sure what the final step should be. However, I feel like if I flash a stock ROM and unroot, I should be good enough for Verizon.
I don't know if they ever turn them on once they get them.
I recently sent a Galaxy S3 in with full root and the "Custom" text on the screen for replacement.
The only email I ever got was that the phone had been received. YMMV.

Interesting. When I was at the Verizon store, the guy at the customer service area told me to return it to stock, because they would definitely check to see if the software was modified. That's why I'm worried about trying to return to stock (or as close to possible) before sending it in.
It seems like if I do the steps I suggested above, it would "appear" to be stock, but it would still have CWM installed. Maybe that will be good enough? I don't think I have any other choice.
@Surge1223 Unique situation I think I remember you having a solution for awhile back. Any advice on this OP?

Easiest method would be to find an me7 ota zip and stock mdk recovery.img and boot.img, if you have a stock mdk back up. Otherwise id suggest going to mk2 instead of nc5 that way you would get an ota notification...although I think flashing a stock rom, recovery and kernel then using supersus full unroot method should do the trick.

Surge, I don't have a stock mdk back up, unfortunately. I went through the forums and found this MK2 Rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2581072). Do you think that would work?
1.) Flash the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2581072 ROM
2.) Download/run Triangle Away
3.) SuperSU (Full Unroot)
4.) OTA update to NC5 (lock bootloader)?
