Ok so my cousin has a p769. And wants me to customize it for him. I've seen the boot loader unlocking vids and I think I can do that with no problem. My questions are after I unlock the boot loader and install cwm how do I root the phone so that he's still running stock ROM to backup his apps. And the other is what ROMs can his phone install? He was wanting Avatar ROM but I only seen it for the 760. Any help with this please? I'm use to the Samsung and Motorola ROMs and rooting methods. Not all this.
Thanks!

So I have rooted the phone but I can't unlock the boot loader bc the mtp driver will not install. I've tried all the methods I could find online and still nothing.

my friends has a Verizon Droid razr and I have no clue how to root. I saw the sticky thread on how to do it but I kept reading that if I flash the wrong zip that I won't be able to UN softbrick ?
I also want to know what bootstrap is...I saw that in a couple of threads..
As you can see I have a galaxy s2 rooted and running a custom ROM so I am familiar with rooting and all. It just seems a bit more complicated since the bootloader is locked.

Really theres no complications. If your friend's phone is still on 2.3.5 then you can use doomlords one click root. If its been updated to the lastest. Theres a method posted in this general section

I see. What about flashing custom ROM? Is it the same process ?

Why not unlock the boot loader there is always a Oden to complete stock with locked boot loader so u can return ice returned 2 phones with unlocked boot loaders and never had a issue even one even a MAXX HD lol and one note 2 as long add there's no root they return them. Not having your BL unlocked limits u quite a bit Its your phone just curious
I used casual, and did everything, root unlock and custom recovery

There's no way to root without Odin of root66 just like last build. Expect casual of course and as stated this is the wrong section so I went ahead and reported it for you so adev can move it. Just keep the sections in mind for future posts please.

Hi guys,
I'm looking for a root that does only that: give me root access.
Is CASUAL really the only possible way to achieve root? If so, is it necessary that it unlocks the boot-loader and installs custom recovery to achieve this?
I probably wouldn't mind except that I'd like to just be able to do OTA updates as available, which I hear is not possible after running casual, and I really don't want to fiddle with custom ROMs as the stock Note 2 one works so well for me.
Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions...

Odin and root66 will root your phone. If you recieve a OTA while rooted it will get rid of your root completely and you will have to re-root your phone, it also has the potential to do some wonky **** to it (ive even heard of bricks happening because of being rooted and accepting the OTA).
Once your bootloader is unlocked you wouldnt have to flash roms if you didnt want to unless you wanted to update to a new OTA.

Hey i got a quick question for everyone,
Do you think the CyanogenMod installer will work with the rooted but locked bootloader of the GS4
Answer yes or no and a reason behind your answer
I don't think it would work, I haven't tired it myself but I would think the Cyangenmod Installer would still have to change the bootloader, unless it has some built in work-around. I would suggest just installing a recovery instead of using the installer, also CWM or TWRP allow you to make backups of your stock rom. You would still have to unlock the boot loader though.

No. It's for Nexus devices first off and you can not flash a ROM on a locked bootloader without an exploit.

Just picking peoples brains i have a GS4 on MJ7 Rooted and a Galaxy Nexus with TWRP running CM 11 4.4.2 nightly im just dying here waiting for the GS4 to be unlocked but it doesnt look like anytime soon
What provider are you using?? My vzw s4 had the Unlocked Icon on it when it first turned on, I think it was just a workaround but I had a custom recovery and rom on it.

I do too, i am also on VZW but that is not the bootloader that is just saying you have Root Permissions
Have you tried to install a custom recovery yet, I think once your rooted, you can install the recovery.
Yes I have I used Goo Manager to try to install TWRP and it will brick your device but only soft brick so you can use Kies to do emergency firmware restore and it will start right back up.
Oh yeah your right, my bad. I originally rooted my S4 in June so it wasn't the MJ7.
im just waiting paciently for a bootloader unlock and since im not part of the progress i cant complain like most people where i was part of the jailbreaking community im now just getting into android.
Not sure if you saw this thread, but it seems to be updated frequently. Looks like it may be a least an alternative to the stock rom.

If you take the official OTA you will definitely get a locked bootloader, and lose root. Root may be possible down the road but there are no guarantees. If you want to ensure root and an unlocked bootloader you need to follow the directions in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578458
Is there going to be a zip I can flash in twrp to up date with out having to be on a rom just on the 4.3.1 I don't have access to a computer and never used odin some help would be nice this my first Samsung all I my other phones were moto and we're different doing the updates

My question is I think I want to jump to 4.3, but I'm not sure how. I am stock rooted with locked bootloader. I'm still on 4.1.1 with VRALJB. I was always satisfied with the stock rom so never saw the point in unlocking the bootloader. What is the easiest way for me to update since I'm really not interested in root access anymore?
My question is why would you want to go the VZW 4.3 OTA? As previously mentioned, you'll lose root access, end up with a locked bootloader, and likely get a bunch of bloatware. There's plenty of 4.3 custom ROMs out there that will do much more for your device.
I dont want that. I'm new to the note 2. I've been on moto phones with locked bootloaders. So I've not had to worry bout locking down my bootloader until now. Ive rooted my note 2 and installed roms on it. Im just trying to find a update that I can use with out installing a rom in order to get to 4.3 1.
I've never used odin and don't have access to a computer right now. In starting to think that i can't get to 4.3.1 with out a computer. Was just hoping I could use twrp to flash a mod version of the update to get there

So far I have not seen any reference to a recovery flashable firmware file...odin only. That said, with a computer, odin is really easy to use so when you get to a PC you can do it in about 3 minutes.
So can I just do the mod update and not have to install the rom or it a package deal ? Just asking cuz with the razor all I had to do was the update .

This might b sort of a nuub question. I am currently using a Verizon note 2 on tmobile. unsure if the phone is unlocked I got it from a friend when I broke my gn3. All I did was insert my dime card and it worked had to change the apn to get data working bit everything works. When I turn on the phone I do get the pop up saying I'm using an un recognized Sim.
So on to my question. I want to root the phone should I use verizon roms and rooting methods apropreate to Verizon or should I u tmobile. Any help would b appreciated

Since you're using a Verizon Note2 SCH-I605, then you should stick with rooting methods/Roms for this specific device. Otherwise, I'm thinking you'll end up bricking the phone. You should be able to change the APN again just like you're doing now after you root and flash a custom ROM.
Also, if you're not familiar with the Note2, then spend time reading the Q&A and Development threads... especially the stickies. There are different rooting methods for different build versions. Android version 4.1.2 is the last build version for this phone where you can unlock the bootloader (with the CASUAL program). If you're still on 4.1.2, then don't update the phone to factory stock 4.3 or 4.4.2...because you'll permanently lock the bootloader. If you are on still 4.1.2 and you want to try out 4.3 or 4.4.2 ROM'S, there are ones in the development section that you can flash through custom recovery that won't lock the bootloader.
If it's on factory stock 4.3, you can use saferoot to root it, then use safestrap for custom touchwiz ROM'S. If you're on factory stock 4.4.2, you can root with ghettoroot, but no custom roms yet.
