I have had quite a few people ask me recently what to do when they change ROMs. What do I back up? How do I back up? etc. So it got me thinking, what does everyone do to back up and restore after installing a new ROM? Here is my list:
1. Titanium back up: back up a few programs that don't really update often or don't come from the GPlay
2. SMS Backup and Restore: self explanatory
3. Usually have a ROM that has a boot to recovery option in the power menu but when I don't I get a quick download of Quick Boot. Yeah I'm too lazy to power off and then push power and vol up.
4. MAKE A BACKUP in TWRP (my recovery of choice)
5. Wipe (A couple times if I am feeling particularly dirty) Factory reset is what I usually use. But always follow the developer install instructions to be safe.
6. For AOSP ROMs install the ROM of the week, add in the GApps and flash them both. For stock ROMs you don't flash GApps. Read the installation instructions to make sure which type of ROM you have.
7. Reboot system
8. Go through google setup (wifi, gmail acct ect)
9. Let G Play install all my apps
10. Go into Esfile explorer (my file manager of choice) and install any new apk or anything I didn't backup with titanium
11. Go into Titanium Backup and restore selected apps/games. At this point I am only really restoring settings.
12. Restore sms with SMS Backup and Restore
13. Realize that the new ROM doesn't have Straight Talk APN included and enter in all the APN info (considering using APN Backup and Restore)
14. Go through settings and toggle switches and buttons to make the phone how I like it. I really do wish there was a cross ROM backup that would allow me to save pie settings etc. since that seems like what I spend the most time with.
15. Go on XDA and thank ROM Dev for his hard work and let him know of any wonkiness in hopes that I can help.
Yup, thats pretty much what I do. Hopefully this has helped a few of you and I hope that others will chime in on what they do so maybe I can streamline my process.
Steps 5-7, I would omit and just say, "follow instruction provided by the developer found in the roms OP". Especially, since step 6 could be wrong for some roms.

Quite right on step six. I haven't been on a stock rom in a long time. Good catch.
I think I'll revise step 5 as well. As for 7 does everyone else clear cache after installation or is it just me?

I only use Titanium Backup to restore app data and settings (it also backs up APNs, SMS, and call history). To archive my apps, I use App Backup and Restore (free), since it has batch restore without paying. It only backs up apps, not data. I also have Android's native backup enabled, but it doesn't seem to store anything other than WiFi passwords for me.
When installing a new ROM, I wipe data, cache, and dalvik-cache (even though it seems redundant to me, I do this for good measure). Once the ROM is flashed, booted, and logged in, I open the Play Store and let it install apps automatically. Then I open App Backup and Restore to restore any apps that either aren't in the Play Store or didn't install automatically (if you're on mobile data, you might want to solely use App Backup and Restore to restore your apps). Then once everything's installed, I batch restore data only with Titanium Backup so I don't have to click through the installer prompts for each app. Just watch what data you restore, since some system data (like settings) isn't compatible between ROMs.
My workflow in step form:
1. Take screenshots of all desktops, folders, app drawer, and notification drawer (for power widget layout)
2. Run Titanium Backup to batch backup apps and data: Titanium Backup -> Menu button -> Batch actions -> Backup all user apps + system data -> Run -> Select All -> uncheck all red (system) apps, Google Play Services, and any apps for which I don't need data backed up. (I recheck some red apps, like News & Weather and Trickster MOD, but usually restoring these can cause issues. Only restore these if you know what you're doing)
3. Run App Backup and Restore to backup APKs for installed apps: Tap select all (check mark in the bottom right), then backup
4. Force Google sync to make sure contacts and calendar are up to date: Settings -> Google -> Menu button -> Sync now
5. In recovery (TWRP), wipe data, cache and dalvik cache
6. Flash ROM, Google Apps, and Genie Widget (for the stock News & Weather widget)
7. Sign in to my Google Account
8. (If you have concerns about data usage, skip this step) Open the Play Store and let it download (this can take a while, check under Menu -> My apps to see when the install queue is finished)
9. Open App Backup and Restore, click the Archived tab, select all (check mark), and hit restore
10. Open Titanium Backup, and batch restore all apps with data, selecting all first. (NOTE: If you set Titanium Backup to restore to external SD card instead of internal storage, you need to go to preferences and change your backup location (for me it was /storage/sdcard1/TitaniumBackup). The detect feature worked for me using the "Whole device" option.)
11. Restart your phone.
12. If something seems off with your launcher but you can't put your finger on it, check it against your screenshots.

That looks like the one! I had that checked, and all of my messages and my custom APNs (Net10, T-Mobile USA, and Orange UK) were saved.

Normally when I do a backup using Titanium Backup, I use the batch function and select "Backup all user apps + system data." Then, after I flash my new ROM, I'll do "Restore missing apps + all system data."
My concern is that if I'm making a backup from a ROM that contains bloatware, then flashing to a debloated ROM, wouldn't restoring all missing apps cause that bloatware to be installed again?
What about restoring system data? Would that reinstall anything that I wouldn't want?
Is the best thing to do is go through each item individually and select what you'd want to restore? That seems very time consuming, and I'd hate to overlook anything.
I guess I'm mainly interested in what most people do when they backup and restore apps and system data when flashing from one ROM to another.

When backing up and restoring, you can choose which apps/system data you want to backup. And if you accidentally do backup one, you can just select it and delete the backup.
When doing a restore, you must make sure you are restoring things that will work with the Rom.
Like for example, system data made for a froyo Rom, could mess up a gingerbread Rom and vice versa. Just depends on what you are trying to restore. For system data, the only main thing I restore (that I remember) is the sense launcher settings, which restores how my screen was set up.

I have this same question. What is the best practice? It seems there is no need to backup system data... only apps + data, is that correct?
i always back up and restore system data that shows up with green text instead of red. these are consider to have "useful" data. theres around 22 or 23 if i remember right. i would start with these and then de select the ones you dont want. for examples i dont use the stocks app so i dont back up stock data. otherwise back up all user apps and data these dont include any of the stock or bloatware apps that come pre installed so its best to keep them all.
Here is what I do.
Open Titanium and Click "menu" on your phone and then select "batch". You will then see a list of different scenarios, look for "backup all user apps" and select "run" . This will back up all your apps. If you want to do system data too select "backup all apps and system data". I always backup up apps and data. Once you select either of these it will show you a list with everything it is backing up. If you don't want something backed up for whatever reason, just uncheck it in the list.
Now if you flash a custom rom that wipes everything and you want to restore all your apps, open up titanium and click "menu" then "batch" and scroll down to the "restore" section. I always do "restore missing apps with data".
Just remember when you make a selection (click run), nothing happens right away, you always go to a screen that shows you what is being backed up or restored. So don't be afraid to click "run"
I have never used titanium backup and would like to confirm something. If you backup system settings, you can restore the all the shortcuts, apps, folders, etc. on the screens? Also, if using titanium backup, I should probably disable the automatic download by Google of all my installed programs, right, when you first reboot the new ROM? About a month ago I bought an HTC Thunderbolt and somebody helped me root the phone. Since then I have had some family emergency/issues that have caused me to put programming the phone on hold. Now that they have cleared up I am trying to now learn a little bit more about upgrading Rom/Kernel/Radio.

Can somebody tell me how to backup my phone entirely?
I would like to back it up with the intent:

* Restore the phone to its current state (if I should drop the phone and get a
replacement).
I do have titanium backup pro installed but it has never been used. Is this all I need?
I seem to recall that there is a backup feature on this phone that was discouraged....

The key for me is to
Use Nandroid (the backup feature in recovery) for a full image backup. Use Titanium to backup individual applications.
Before restoring nandroid backups, be sure to wipe cache and Dalvik (under advanced in recovery).
Nandroid takes nearly the entire phone back to the point of backup (houses everything you have on your phone's internal memory). Titanium allows backups to be restored on different roms. Some apps and many system apps don't play nicely with Titanium, but most from the market do play nicely with it.
Installing new kernels doesn't require wiping your data. Installing new/updated roms does. Installing themes usually does not, but there are exceptions.

Per your input I updated to Rom Manager PRO and then simply selected "Backup Current ROM". I assume that this covers everything on the phone including radio/kernel/apps....

Yes, CWM is how you want to backup your phone entirely. I would recommend going into recovery and making a backup on your own instead of hitting the "backup my current rom" button in rom manager. The backup you make will be saved in a folder on your SD card named clockworkmod/backup. I always think its a good idea to move your backups to your computer and keep your two or three most recent backups on your sdcard.
As for backing up your apps, you can do a batch backup in titanium and when you load a new rom you will be able restore the app and any data associated with it. As a general rule I would only backup apps that require a lot of setup. Otherwise when you load a new ROM the apps you had previously installed will automatically restore (depending on the ROM). Just a tip, dont backup system apps. Doing so and switching versions, for example froyo to gingerbread, could cause many issues down the road even if they aren't immediately seen.
Lastly, when installing a new ROM you always want to wipe data/factory reset at least twice and wipe cache and dalvik cache twice each as well. If you have any issues dont hesitate to ask there are many people who are willing to help.
Go to ROM Manager, scroll down and select Backup Current ROM.
I use two apps for backing up and restoring installed apps; Titanium Pro and MyBackup Pro. For some reason MBP successfully restores the apps + data that fail using TP. For example, apps installed from the Amazon android market.
I create full backups with both TP and MBP, but when I need to restore ( after a complete data wipe and new Rom flash) I do the following:
1) skip setting up my Google account during the initial setup process that starts after user data has been wiped.
2) Uncheck the box that allows backups to Google's servers
3) After setup is finished, go into settings, privacy and deselect the automated backup options
( If I don't do the previous two steps, then Google starts pushing apps that may have been backed up and/ or apps that I have purchased. I don't want this to happen since I am going to do my own restore with data.)
4) I use TP to restore MBP only
5) I then use MBP to restore the rest of my user apps and data.
Some may disagree with my two backup app process, but it has been more successful for me than using either TP or MBP by themselves.
If something doesn't go right with MBP, I still have the full TP backup to pull from.
I do not bother backing up systems apps just because it seems to cause me too many issues when i attempt the restore. This means i have to redo any system settings, but that isn't a big deal to me.
Some of my favorite apps have backup features of their own. Folder Organizer and Circle Launcher are two of my all time favorites. Both restore nicely when i move to a new Rom.
Occasionally, i copy the TP, MBP, and Clockwork folders from my sdcard to a folder on my laptop just in case.
The above may sound like alot, but it goes pretty quick for me and I flash quite a bit ( at least once or twice a week when the device is new and the Rom cookers are really active).
Another thought, I have used MBP to successfully restore my android home screen settings for sense ( part of MBP's data bu ). My preferred launcher is LauncherPro, which has its own backup and restore function.
Finally, i always do a nandroid backup before wiping and flashing to a new Rom. I also always do the backup right from clockwork mod recovery. I love the Rom Manager app and paid for the premium version quite a while ago, but i prefer to backup, wipe and flash from the recovery screen. Even if i download something that needs to be flashed using Rom Manager, I still reboot into recovery to perform the needed steps.
Hope this helps and if someone has another app backup/ restore routine they use successfully i would love to know the steps. I am open to learning something new.

After the search through the forum I haven't found a good answer for this question.
I'm preparing for rooting my Desire Z.
I have to downgrade - everything will be lost.
As everyone knows I CAN'T use Titanium backup.
So which backup app you would suggest to use?
I need the perfect restore of settings and apps after the root.
I've looked for some of the apps but I can only say something about the interfaces:
My backup pro - simple interface. Allows to backup "data" (whatever it means) and "applications and media" (not sure if this means widgets too, not sure what does media mean)
Backup Master/B] - nice interface. Lets to choose between: sms, mms, bookmarks, call log, system setting, alarms, apn, application (does it mean widgets too?). This would be the app to go if it works 100% well.
App Backup and reinstall - lists all of the apps. You can chose which one to back up. Seems to backup apps and games only.
So as you see the choice would be quite easy (Backup Everything). However does it work perfectly well? Does it backup widgets too?
May be you would suggest any other app?
i dont think there's any app tht allows u to backup everything without being rooted. but
titanium backup is the way to go after you have.
For those who have the same question.
I had to give the phone to service, so I've backed up the phone using Backup Master.
As I anticipated they have upgraded my system to 2.42 WITHOUT ASKING ME for approval.
The result:
Cons:
1. Some of the apps have not been restored. They've just shown during restore but didn't install.
2. The process was not hands free. I had to confirm reinstalling each app.
3. No settings in the backuped apps have been restored.
4. Phone book wasn't restored.
5. No settings in the launcher or the system were restored.
6. No settings of such apps like Tasker or MS Folder Note has been restored (you have to back up your personal data and your notes from the level of these apps).
Pros:
1. Sms and mms history was restored properly.
2. Call log has been restored properly
2. Most of the apps have been reinstalled.
So as you see you can restore more or less the system bu you will spend hours on setting up the settings back again.

I'm looking for an app that backs up the "Accounts & Sync" settings for all my accounts, before flashing a new rom. I tried "MyBackup" from the market and it backed up my Sensation quite nicely, but it doesn't restore the accounts and setting up everything again was a pain.
Does anyone know of an app that does a backup that includes a backup of the "Accounts & Sync" settings?

you have many choices!
1- Nandroid backup.
you can do a Nandroid backup by the recovery.
Be careful you must have more than 1Go free space on your sd card.
So install recovery.
Then reboot on recovery mode.
GO on backup/restore
The phone save all your phone.
then you can restored it. or just datas if you want.
2- Save By titanium Backup
This is an app which is created to save all your datas and restore it after.
With full version you can be faster and restore all apps at the same time.
With free it's harder... one by one :s

I have a follow-up question to this. Several, actually:
* Where can I find nandroid? googling finds me something that is several years old.
* Titanium backup, while it contains a section for "backup/restore all system data" first doesn't actually contain any entries, and second is actually much more than we want.
What we're looking for, if I understand OP correctly, is something that ONLY backs up "Accounts & Sync". This is by far the most annoying thing about wiping and reflashing roms, and is also unlikely to be the cause of errors (at least for reflashing the same rom). Thus, is there an application, or a mode in an application or something, that lets us back up *only* the "Accounts & Sync" settings?
NANDROID refers to the back up process from within your recovery program I.E Clockwork, 4EXT Ect... It will be listed as "Backup" in those programs when you are in recovery mode.
You can just backup the "Accounts and Sync Settings" from within titanium, or you can use ROMToolbox which is what i use, both are pretty much the same program but ROMToolbox does alot more than just backups. You will find the "Accounts and Sync Settings" under the "System" tab from within either program.
Once you have backed up the "Accounts and Sync Settings" it would simply be a case of reinstalling either titanium or toolbox and restoring the afore mentioned .apk once you have flashed your new ROM.

Regarding backing up the settings, I can't seem to find anything like that in titanium backup or in (the screenshots for) ROMToolbox (I assume this is what you are referring to: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.liteupmobile.secretcodes)

The section you will be looking for once installed is "App Manager" once in that or any other program that romtoolbox offers you slide left to switch tabs
EDIT: Ah just installed titanium there to have a look and that displays everything under the same menu (sorry i thought it was similar to toolbox) and it will be highlighted red to indicate it is a system Application / File..
Since we last spoke, I also found it in TitaniumBackup, actually. All I to do was dig a bit =)
I haven't tried restoring it, though. I also don't know where the data actually ended up. It doesn't seem to be in /sdcard/TitaniumBackup like my backed up apps... Any idea?
Em it will be there, on your sdcard / titanium backup folder and there will be in three separate files something like.
The three file names mentioned below contain all the info from your "Accounts & Sync Settings"

The number and letter strings may be different on your device / sdcard, but those are the files you will be looking for.
I found a bunch of those for the apps I've backed up, but not the settings. I'll look further when I get home.
I simply showed the "system" apps, and some of them showed up as green. Those were the ones I backed up, because they seemed to have reasonable names, like "Accounts" and "SMS/MMS", etc. The red colored ones seemed, indeed, to be system apps, the apps themselves.
I think I found them. It looks like they have names like this:
com.keramidas.virtual.ACCOUNTS-20120417-153858.properties
com.keramidas.virtual.APP_WIDGETS-20120417-153918.properties
com.keramidas.virtual.WIFI_AP_LIST-20120417-154139.properties
Be careful when restoring system data to rooms. This can and has been proven to cause issues as with each update there are changes to where and how things are saved. It is advised by just about every developer to never restore system data and won't except any bug reports if you do restore system data of any kind.

While that is true restoring accounts and sync settings between roms (especially if its not a version jump for example 2.2>>2.3) it won't cause any (critical) errors.

That all depends on how the dev setup the rom. Like my personal roms. Restoring any system data from any other rom even from the same OS version will boot loop you and require a reflash.
How do you backup and restore Settings/Accounts?
I tried restoring the Google App but I don't think the configured google accounts are stored in it. How would I be able to restore all of the accounts configured in settings/accounts?

Yes, I would be interested in this as well. I have many accounts I've configured on my Note 10.1 2014, but after upgrading to 5.1.1, I want to know if I could get all the accounts I had configured previously, somehow configure automatically to my Note, instead of adding them individually and manually.

What is the importance of this ID? I am having trouble with restoring apps using Titanium backup.

u can keep ur old id or can change to new id, its up to you as some developers use android id as a way to ensure you're you in some way that isn't as douchey as asking for your hardware id numbers like IMEI or MEID. It's also the way Google recommends to developers for determining who is who for whatever reason. It normally gets reset every time you flash a new ROM or go back to stock.
if u will change ur id ur phone will restart and ur device will have new id although u can keep ur old id too ... no issues there.
Ten Easy Steps for TiBu success:
1. Open TiBu.
2. Menu > Preferences > App processing mode > AUTO Direct (Should be this by default anyway)
3. Create your backup: Hit the Batch button to the top-right on your screen (the one with a checkmark). Hit “Backup all user apps” and click the green checkmark up top on the next screen. When getting ready for future wipes and ROM flashes, you are going to scroll down and just hit “Backup new user apps & newer app versions”, followed by “Redo backups for modified data”... This will update all those saved games and other info that has changed since the last time you backed it up. Do not backup or restore system data.
Note: While not required.. its a great idea to periodically move all of your backups to your computer for safekeeping. When connecting to your computer you will find a /TitaniumBackup directory on your internal storage. Go ahead and just copy the entire folder over to a safe spot on your computer, and update it from time to time. You never know when you that might come in handy!
4. TiBu now lets you backup and restore your call logs, SMS messages, and browser bookmarks (stock browser only).. How sweet is that?! On the main screen hit Menu > Backup data to XML and choose what you would like to backup if you please.
5. Now we're going to make an update.zip.. This is an awesome feature that gives you a file to flash after your ROM, so that when you boot up you will have TiBu already installed and ready to restore all your apps! Menu > Create "update.zip". The only thing you want to change here is under "Titanium Backup will be installed as:" Select "System application". You can change the name of the output file if you like, I just leave it as update.zip for simplicity. Hit your green checkmark up top and you are good to go.
TIP: Remember to create a new update.zip before your next ROM flash if TiBu has been updated at all since then.. which it probably has if its been a while, the developer updates things a lot!
6. Boot to recovery.. flash your ROM and Gapps (if needed). Now Mount the System, then install the TiBu update.zip we just created. Now... reboot.
7. Skip the initial device setup screen. This can be done by quickly tapping the top-left, top-right, bottom-right, and bottom-left corners of the screen in that order. Or you can just skip through everything without entering your Google account info.
8. Launch TiBu and do Batch > Restore missing apps with data. Now here's the important part.. hit Deselect all. Go through the list and manually select the apps you want to restore with data. You can do it safely for MOST user apps: games, utility apps, etc. But do NOT restore data to any Google apps, and try to avoid it for any apps which actively sync often or create accounts in your phone setup. Can you get away with some of these things sometimes? Maybe.. but just don't take the risk. Restoring any bad data you shouldn't could mean you'll have to re-wipe and start all over again. Once you're done selecting, hit the green checkmark to start the restore.
9. Now run through that last step again... This time after hitting Deselect all, hit App only. Now you can select the apps you are going to restore without data. You can do this for just about anything, including your google apps. Its the same as installing them normally.. TiBu will just do it for you in one quick batch job. Afterwards you can do a Menu > Restore data from XML and restore any the call logs and SMS data we backed up earlier as well.
10. Reboot. Go to Settings > Accounts > Add your Google account and set up your phone again. You can take it from here
After I boot from a clean flash I open TiBu and the first thing it does is ask if I want to restore the previous ID...

I haven't bought the PRO version of TiBu, so I will not be changing the device ID.
Previously, I haven't created the update.zip so I will not be able to restore my previous user app+data too from TiBu.
I should have copied the Titaniumbackup directory to my laptop
Though, I was able to restore SMS and most of my user apps from the TitanumBackup directory, by clicking on the files directly, except the Market links. When I open TiBu, some of the apps doesn't have the market link. But in the Google Play-> My apps, all of my installed apps appear in the "INSTALLED" list.
