If you have correct codecs then there is only one reason you get that lag: your video isn't prepared for this phone, is bigger as in format. To play video smoothly in this device you have to convert your video to 480x800 px format. There are a lot of software that can do that, just google for free video converter, and in conversion window choose output to Android video format 480x800.
I had that problem too, and as I said here, I solved it.

I found out now that converting everything to HD AVC H.264 mp4 480*360 works well without hiccups for me.
I use Format Factory to convert, which is free. The UI sucks but it converts okay.
Hi there, I been searching around regarding this HD Video playback issue but till now there are just like half half situation. Some people claimed their device can run smoothly for 720P video but some said can't, therefore I would like to ask about this question again.
I have tried out few HD trailer in 720p mp4 format, coded in h.264. My result was out of 10 720P video I tried, only 2-3 able to play smoothly in my x10i, the rest will either have video lagging or require soft-decoding which will cause in video lagging as well. In short, my x10i can't play 720P well.
I have another solution in hand which is converted them still into h.264 but in resolution of 854*480, and all of these converted video worked fine. Just wondering if most of the x10i user able to play 720P video smoothly or not since conversion requires some times... Also wish to know is it the real hardware constraints for x10i to play HD video or only my device having some processing problem...
Nevertheless thank you for your answer and opinion =)

hmm that's weird, I played HD on my phone perfectly fine, didn't lag at all maybe you need to try different video players, there's some one that play HD/MKV on the market but there is no point playing HD on a non-hd screen.

I tried moboplayer, rockplayer, vplayer. They all won't able to play it smoothly, neither hard-decoding nor soft-decoding. Hmm your video size is 1280*720 or above? As far as I concerned 480P already consider as HD and my phone is able to play them well as well.
I understand there is no point playing HD on x10 screen, but all my video source are in HD format and I would like to figure out x10i capabilities in HD playing so it may save me some time doing video conversion

+1.Indeed
But give mx player or Dice Player a try they are a bit smoother.
use mx player
The built in video player seems to work fine with all my 720p HD videos.

Which ROM are you using?

I've tried every darn free player app in the market and had no great results. Either there is lag when watching videos, or there is bad pixelation/divxing. Or it won't play the files.
What do you guys use on you flyers to play HD video content? Something suitable for .mkvs and .movs...
I use DicePlayer on my Flyer and Desire HD, and 720p mkv's play flawlesly. Well worth those 3€ for the application!

Thanks. I've tried the trial version. Mkvs play well. .movs and .wmvs dont play well. It uses software acceleration for movs so its a bit choppy, though the sound works. .wmvs video is off by a second.
Hey guys
Today I tested a HD trailer on my Titan and although it looked excellent on such display,I think it wasn't as smooth as iPhone 4.I maybe to sensitive but I think it was kinda less smoother.
So I decided to record a video with the phone and it's playback was very smooth(same as iPhone).
So,shouldn't the videos I synced from the PC play smoothly too ?
Just curious, what was the framerate of the HD video? Also, what was the codec and bitrate if you happen to know.
30FPS
With a total bitrate of 2558kbs
Here's the link to it

If any of you guys can download it,it would be great.Check if it plays as smoothly as on the iPhone(if you have one) or like the video recorded by the phone
OK,so tested the trailer side by side with the iPhone 4 and it ran pretty much the same.(iPhone being a tiny bit faster).
On a side note,Titan "destroyed" iPhone 4 in terms of video playback lol first because of the large screen and second because the colors look way better on the Titan !
does the titan play .mkv files. i'm planning to get one after the holidays, but i don't know if wp7 can play .mkv!! i know that can play h.246 codecs. most of the video files i have are .mkv and not .avi. can anyone test it, please??

Hey there...
I'm new into DNA and HTC. I have some movies in .MKV format. Whem I play them with the regular HTC player they are NOT smooth. I downloaded some Video Players from the Play Store, and I got the same result: I can't play .MKV video files in a smooth way with my DNA. I searched a little bit, and seems to be that HTC only plays .MP4 files and the rest of formats should be converted to MP4.
Is that true? Any experience or suggestion for this problem?
Thanks!

Is your dna rootable? Have you tried mx player?
Unfortunately is not rootable since it has the 2.04 software version. Yeah, I tried MX Player by itself and then try it using the MX Player Codec (ARMv7). But no luck...
Try converting the video and change the file format. That should produce a smoother playback. That's what I do at least.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda premium
In MX Player try using S/W decoding reather than H/W decoding, most of my mkvs work for me that way.
Try MOBOPlayer its free and plays all my videos super smooth, plus has the pop out feature to watch video while like reading for instance. My mkv's are in 720p ac3 stereo 192kbps if that helps. The gpu works best with the MP4 format though with baseline at id say 8000kbps max.. grab something like mediacoder which is free to encode with for testing.
Thanks guys! Using Mobo Player with soft decode solved my problem. Appreciate it guys...
