Hi together,
is there anyone who knows how to get Samba NAS shares (CIFS.ko) working on htc Desire X ?
The device must be rooted and I think it is just possible with a special kernel/ROM....
Has someone connected a NAS withthe app cifsManager ?
Any help would be very fine ... I am searching for weeks about that topic, but didn't get a any good idea yet.
Use ES file explorer. It's possible with that.

Yes, of course ... but what is wrong with section "Desire X General" ?
I mean isn't it a general question about using the htc Desire X, what section would be better for it ?

I am using ES file explorer and yes, this great app can open one mp3 file to (for example Bubble UPnP) music app.
ES file explorer NAS access works fine... from my music app I want to stream the music to an external renderer (WD TV live).
The renderer is connected to my hifi stereo.
So the problem with ES file explorer and Bubble UpnP is (for me ??) that only *one* single file can be opened.
How can I open a complete folder from ES file explorer to a UpnP-music app (like bubble UPNP) ?
How can I select multible songs in ES file explorer an pass them over to a playlist in bubble UpnP ?
Access to NAS with local playing on the htc phone is no problem ...
A very comfortable solution would be a system wide mount point (which can be adressed in bubble UPNP).
Access via local file-system to the NAS - thats why asking for CIFS.

I have a home network that I use for my house and my home based consulting business. In the environment I have an iomega NAS drive, a Windows Home Server, a Small Business Server 2010, a Windows 2008 R2 Server and multiple Notebooks running Windows 7 and a few running Windows XP. I want to be able to mount or access a SMB share located on either the Windows 7 Notebooks or the WHS Box to on my Evo View 4G via Wifi. I have tried downloading several applications from the market place and nothing seems to work properly. Even supplying the proper credentials when asked does not work. Does anyone know of a step by step guide to doing this or can possibly help me to figure out where I am screwing it up?
Have you tried using Astro and its SMB add-on?
I'm a fan of ES File Explorer. I access my Linux server and another file share on a Windows box through it. Never had an issue.
I've used Astro with the SMB add-on from the market and it worked on my WHS, give it a shot.
ES File Explorer works great with SMB.
Astro SMB pouting keeps crashing on me.
I also use UPnPlay to stream video to Flyer from Twonky media server using VPlayer
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e
AndSMB. Works great for me.
ES File Manager sounds interesting.
Astro SMB crashes on me also.

I have tried using Netfront Life Connect and it connects to the Iomega NAS without an issue and will play the AVI movies on the device.
ES File Explorer gets a login failure no matter how I provide the username, either devicename\username or domainname\username or just username. This is trying to access a notebook running Windows 7. Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 running stock image (no root).
I would like to set it up so that I can stream videos from network shares. I have looked at various options so far but none have worked.
ES File Explorer: could not mound any shares.
CifsManager : can't run it because of no root.
Astro file manager with samba module - did not work.
AndSMB - could not mount any shares.
SharesFinder - worked partially. Can access some network shares but not all. Requires entire file to be downloaded to start watching the video.
Any other ideas/suggestions would be most welcome and appreciated.
Thanks,
Osho

I am doing this already.
I have rooted my retail Tab 10.1, and pershoot made me the CIFS module so cifsmanager works great.

This app seems interesting. When it plays from Samba Share, does it require the entire video file to be downloaded first? I could not find any trial version of this app or else I would try it myself.
Thanks,
Osho

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I am not likely to root (for personal and other reasons) - so cifsmanager and similar solutions requiring root will not work.
I already have something that works using Subsonic app but it requires the server to be transcoding all the files - this is less than idea. So, I am looking for a way to stream video using samba shares that do not require any transcoding.
Thanks,
Osho

Care to elaborate?
My understanding with rooting with an unlocked bootloader is that you can "unroot" or go back to stock at any time, where then it would be in the out of the box state.
I read some info on BUZZ Player and it seems some people have had sync issues with SMB. It also seems expensive for a video player app.
Would this app work for you?
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.plexapp.android
Allows you to setup Plex Media Server and stream.
Plex will stream movies, video, MP3 from your home computer to your phone, tablet or another over WiFi or the web. I works great on WiFi but can get a little choppiness over the web depending on your connection speed.

I am using this for business purposes also and one business app I have says no support if rooted. Besides, I have a solution for streaming via trans-coding (PlayOn Local Media, Subsonic both works - and I just learned of Plex Server in this thread).
All of these solutions require trans-coding on the server side - which is very compute-intensive. I am trying to figure out a way I can play videos from the samba shares such that:
1. The server does not have to do any trans-coding
2. The entire file does not need to be copied to the tab (typical files for me are between 1.5GB to 3GB)
I could do that without breaking sweat on a laptop (both 720p and 1080p videos) or on the el cheapo netbook (for upto 720p videos). I would like to be able to do the same using Tegra 2 on the tab.
Update: I got both ES File Browser and File Browser HD to connect to the windows share just fine and browse as usual. I did not do anything special to make that happen. It was not working couple of days ago and it worked today.
Thanks,
Osho
Anyone had any luck to stream videos (without downloading or transcoding) from mounted SMB shares?
Thanks,
Osho
I have been toying with something similar. My network router allows the use of a usb drive to be attached for network and internet access. The only program I found that will play the video files is vplayer (trial in market). Now I can stream movies and play music as long as im networked. I have tethering on my Evo so I have a hotspot wherever I go....
the new version of ES File Explorer works GREAT !!
along with the stock touchwizz video player it's all i need.
if it doesnt show the video file icon the tab simply wont read it (even if you transfert it via usb) so it makes it simple to know what can be read or not.
Yes, I had some success with the new ES File Browser as well - nice indeed.
Some of the 720p MKV did not play smoothly for me - maybe after the upgrade to touchwiz it will play better.
Anyone know of a good video player that can take advantage of Tegra2 720p/1080p decoding that works well on Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1?
Thanks,
Osho

ES File Explorer worked for me fine a few days ago - but looks like the latest update to it in the market has broekn the Samba support? I can no longer browse the Windows 7 shared drives. Do you have the same experience?
I can browse the samba shares just fine using File Manager HD app - however that app does not support streaming.
Thanks,
Osho

I don't know if this has been posted yet. I had searched and didn't find anything.
I am trying to stream movies from my PC with windows 7 to the 3D. Every time I search for media devices, it says no devices found. I think I have everything set up on the computer right but it still won't connect.
Thanks in advance!

I thought you can only stream from your phone to PC and not the other way round.
when i'm at home, i just use cifs manager to mount my windows shared folders.
this allows me to play (stream) the videos via wifi as if they were on my sd card
Try to use SimpleSync or Skifta. they seem to work
Make sure that media sharing is on on your computer

PC-> Evo streaming
This isn't exclusive to the evo but Plex is an application that can do it. Just install the computer and android version. After it catalogs your desired folders or entire hard drive it will stream it.
Awesome! Thanks a lot guys. I appreciate all the helpful responses!
Now, are there any apps that will allow me to stream movies from my PC at home to my phone at work? Both are connected to wifi.

You could try Orb. Not sure what quality you'd get, not used it for a few years but if memory serves me right it transcodes on the fly to flash format so you can watch movies on your phone via a flash enabled browser. I used it for a bit on a wii before homebrewing it.

Would this allow 3d movies to be steamed? That is really the only thing I would want to steam and I have a ton of them. Way too many to put on my 32GB sd card. I have already filled twice and had to delete a bunch of stuff.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
Yeah, I know what you mean about not enough space on a 32gb SD
Thinking about buying one of those 64gb cards.
Tbh I've not tried tversity with this phone yet, but i believe it transcodes to flash, so might work seeing as we can view 3D YouTube vids *shrug*
i haven't been able to find the stock dlna app for my atrix anywhere on the forums. the links have either been broken or the files don't work. anyone help me out? thanks in advance.

stream media to and from my atrix. for example stream movie to my ps3 to watch. or copy new music from computer to atrix.
I was wanting DLNA, too. Im going to try to rip it from the Motorola Bravo stock ROM later, I used to have that phone and I know it has it. Hopefully its not like, hardware dependent on anything.
Or, god forbid, Blur dependent D:

U can take it out from a rom its located in system/apps folder
DLNA.apk
DlnaSystemService.apk
but i am not sure if it will work with non blur roms bcoz few blur app need blurhome to run i have tried the stock taskmanager on CM7 based rom and it was not working.
You should 1000% just use bubbleupnp app. It is the best DLNA app there is period. I'm using it right now to play movies from my NAS straight to my Samsung TV... or on my phone... or a movie from my phone to my PC... or from my phone to my TV... or from my PC to my phone... its DLNA, it doesn't require moto-anything to work

I use ES explorer to stream medias from and to my NAS, TV, PCs. I also use it as a FTP Client with my NAS. Very handy.
I have a bunch of mp3s on a windows PC shared over wifi LAN.
I want to use a old android device to plug into speakers in another room and access the shared files, search/filter and queue, play songs on the phone.
POssible? Any suggestions on the best way to do this?
I know I could run a shoutcast server and just queue up songs on the pc but I would love to be able to use some sort of app that can scan all the shares and create a database that can be easily filtered/searched on the phone
Thank you =)

Es file explorer. I use it sometimes to play music from my pc and also a dlna hard drive. Its free and easy to use, you will need to enter your windows user name and password the first time you access a windows pc though.
