I have made a build environment in VMWare. I have added all necessary programs to the Gnome menu. I spent a good 6 hours on making this and compressing this.
Before you use the VMWare image change RAM and CPU to your needings. I suggest at least 2GB RAM and 2 cores assigned for decent performance.
I have also enabled 3D acceleration for OpenGL developers or those who want to try making games.
Requirements
VMWare Player (FREE)
VMWare Workstation (optional, paid)
Features
- Everything is installed:
- Android SDK Tools
- Eclipse
- Android AOSP ready: tested with Jelly Bean
- CyanogenMod ready: tested with CyanogenMod 10 and later
- Developer links in Firefox to CyanogenMod and Android AOSP.

I would highly recommend each user and ESPECIALLY new users go through the process of setting up and configuring their own development environment. You will gain a lot of understanding on how Linux and thus Android operates by working with it yourself, and this really is important. This is great for a experienced dev who wants to have a backup of his own environment, but I think it's just adding one more crutch that the newbies really won't understand.
Password is 'root'
I thought this was a nice and obvious password to use. Sorry for letting you wait.

It's much more stable using VMWare. Many systems have trouble downloading the source code. Virtual Box gets the 'HTTPS ... not received' errors. Honestly I don't know how to say the error accurately because I simply skipped Virtual Box due to that issue

These issues are simple configuration mishaps and can be fixed easily. Nat tends to do this, I use a bridged nic. There are also a few kernel values you modify to fix any "download errors". I have never experienced any issues like you are suggesting using virtual box.

I had issues building with less then 3 gig of memory. 512 might be too low. Might need at least 2 gig.

Kernel Source
Hi,
I'm new to android development.
I know that every ROM will have a Linux kernel, but where does this kernel come from?
I googled it, but I still can't figure it out.
I'll just take a wild guess.
Is it from
1. The source that you git from? (Ex: AOSP, CM10, AOKP)
2. The kernel of the Linux OS? (Ex: This VM's Linux kernel)
and by the way, am I able to change the kernel myself? (Ex: 2.6.35 to 3.0.8)
Thanks!

You get the kernel source from your device manufacturer.

Don't have a mirror, but why don't you just download a Linux ISO and set it up for yourself? Should be smaller downloads the whole way, everything will be up to date, and you'll get invaluable learning experience.:

Arcane Kernel
Hello XDA,
I compiled the stock linux kernel (Version 2.6) for the Samsung Galaxy S Wifi / Player 3.6 EU and KOR edition!
It is in an very very very early development state.
If you want to use it for your development (ROM or kernel), you can use it, but don't pm me for a permission for developing with it.
If you are posting your own ROM/Kernel that is based on the Arcane Kernel, just say: "Based on the Arcane Kernel"

It has USB-OTG support, but I don't tested it.
The version of the kernel is 2.6, but my further step is to build a 3.0 kernel.

There is a slight problem with that. Usb otg does not work on our devices because they don't have enough power to provide for it. You would have to provide an external power source in order to use it

Probably because the OP is building using a codesourcery toolchain. Some toolchains break the WiFi module (like Google's NDK toolchain).

Try building the kernel using the stock GCC 4.4.3 toolchain in the CyanogenMod source or build the kernel with Linaro.

Hi,
Just saw a commit at CM..cant seem to post a link, which adds Wiimote support natively in cm, but needs a kernel compiled with CONFIG_HIDRAW=y and CONFIG_HID_WIIMOTE=y.
URL review . cyanogenmod . org / # / c / 63293 /
Strictly speaking the above commit is for cm11, but i assume it would also work for cm12..
Since I don't have the required hardware available atm to build it myself and don't have the required number of posts yet to ask in the kernel thread itself I'm asking here:
Could anyone help please?

Can you post a list of Gapps included? I am particularly interested in Google Exchange Services.
I'm gonna try this since I haven't tested the 32b setups but question, would you by any chance know if the OTA updater is still working after all your fixes? Or would you know a few tricks to get it to work on an ssd installation. For some reason I was able to do it on USB setups but I can't for the life of me get it to update on my Main desktop and I've reinstalled and reconfigured all kinds if things for the last week or so trying to get it to install and actually update...thanks either way.
Thanks, this is how Jide should release it - fully rooted and setup.

Bro this hacked edition has many system files modified...so technically...OTA won't work....but I will release OTA as patches which can be applied from windows. For ssd installation...I haven't tried that....also I will upload the captured OTA for 32 bit....you can try that if u are on official version....but if u are on my version no need to update....the latest OTA is already installed???
would you please add support for VirtualBox Install ?

Simple question, how would I go about installing the boot.img from Heimdall, or is there a better more 2016-2017 based method?

virtual reality kernel flashing? Odin or Heimfall is needed for flashing on download mode. if you can Boot your device into system or recovery you can use dd with shell, or by twrp or you can use one of the leet flashing apps like flashify, flashfire, etc.
Oh man! I can't wait for this to be working at %100, looks beautiful! Great job!
