I have build ME7 (rooted) and I thought I'd see what happens if I installed a recovery using ROM Toolbox. What happened is that I now cannot boot my phone. I get a large green Andy with "Downloading" and "Do not turn off target!!" below it and the screen is stuck there. I tried a battery pull, but still I'm stuck there. These lines appear at the top left of the screen:
Could not do normal boot.
ODIN MODE
Product Name: SCH-I535
Current binary: Samsung official
System Status: Custom
CSB_CONFIG_LSB: 0x30
Write Protection: Enable
Can anyone please get me booting my phone again? Thanks so much. I tried rebooting into recovery (vol up + home + power), but the phone still does into Downloading mode.
UPDATE - Figured it out. Pressed vol down + power, waited a minute, released power button. Warning screen came up asking me to press vol up to continue into download mode or vol down to cancel. I pressed vol down and voila, I was able to boot my phone. Phew !
I have the same problem.
On boot, I get a screen that says:
Samsung
Unlock
Then it goes to that stupid Downloading Do Not Turn Off Target screen!
How the hell do I get TWRP to load? I can get back into the stock ROM by canceling the update, but I would really like to be able to install Eclipse on this phone!
Thanks guys!
From off - Power, vol up, and I think home button. Once it vibrates once, let go of power. Once it says booting recovery, let go of the other buttons.

That just takes me to the same screens as described above.
This is a brand new phone. Just bought it today. Could they have changed something?
I rooted with SuperSU and installed TWRP with GooManager.
If your on the me7 ota you cant load a custom recovery. Me7 patched the exploit that facilitated the use of a custom recovery. If your on mdk still I would try reinstalling it.

Nope. For now you are stuck on the ME7 you have (assuming you got ME7 from the OTA or it was installed when you bought the phone from VZW) which does not (cannot) have a custom recovery nor an unlocked bootloader. All that is possible as of this writing is to be able to root ME7. I have not seen anything documented where the root exploit in ME7 can be undone.
UPDATE - Apparently I was wrong. You can go back to stock ME7. From another thread:
Plug your phone into a Mac or PC, install the VZW utility, select repair device. It will download and flash the official firmware and change your status to official and your splash screen back to the normal samsung logo, not the open lock with custom. It will be ME7 and bone stock. Have done it and rerooted myself. Hope it helps.
And I also found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301259

Hello, I am new to the forum, but I am not new to rooting. I switched from the Droid Razr Maxx to the Galaxy S4, and so far I have loved my GS4. I am updated fully to android 4.2.2 baseband I545VRUAME7. I was able to root my phone using the SD Card method as published on Saturday, July 27 2013. Upon rooting my phone I attempted to install custom recovery in order to install the Eclipse S4GE v1.4 ROM made by nitroglycerine33. I downloaded Goomanager and installed TWRP. Upon telling TWRP to flash the custom ROM it rebooted the phone, as usual. After reboot i was put into Odin. I tried this process 4 times with no avail, continuously booting into Odin. After trying TWRP, I tried Clockworkmod and the same happened to me. I am unable to get anything other than Odin, and I really hate TouchWiz and want to switch to this ROM. Thanks for any help.

You cant flash roms on the new update, you can only root.
With rooted ME7, we do not have the capability (yet!) to install custom roms or recoveries. See the thread on the bounty about this.

Why is that, and is there a way to downgrade the Baseband now that I am rooted, as I said before I do not like TouchWiz.

What's your build number? If it ends with ME7 the best you can do is root (for now).
Is there a way to downgrade, or a reason as to why we cannot install custom ROMs?
Me7 blocks older versions of the firmware so no downgrading. You cant install a custom recovery because me7 patched the loki exploit. Once on the me7 ota youre stuck, for now atleast.

obviously.. what i should have wrote was,
surprised nobody is able to compare and contrast the 2 bootloaders, find out whats different and examine a way to release that block. which im pretty sure what they have been trying.
basically it should be the same bootloader, one locked and one unlocked. find out how the lock is there and whats different
Is there any way to get out of the Odin mode when you attempt to reboot to recovery on ME7 using TWRP? Is it possible to flash back to the stock ROM?
You cant flash a custom recovery on the me7 ota. Turn your phone off and use the odin/download mode key combo. When it asks if u want continue decline and your phone will boot normally. Me7 images flashable via odin are in the dev section.

You're not using TWRP if you updated to ME7. You have the stock recovery and are on the stock rom. There is no going back to MDK.

Unfortunately I have figured that one out. So, is there any way to install one of the ROMs posted by Dubbsy? I was under the impression that these worked with ME7, but I must be very wrong in that assumption. Forgive my ignorance. I'm just really sick of TouchWiz and I can't wait to get a clean Android install on this device.
No you cant install any rom as of yet on me7. The me7 roms in the dev section are an me7 base with mdk files so you can retain ability to flash a custom recovery and flash other roms. As for your pm shut your phone all the way off and then hold volume down + power. Release power when it vibrates keep holding vol down and itll ask for you to confirm or deny booting to download mode. If you deny it your phone should boot normally. Everytime you boot I believe itll do this so youll eventually need to use one of the me7 odin images. There is no wipe versions in the dev section so you wont lose any apps and data associated with them.

after doing that procedure once, it let's me boot up fine. Powering off, then on, reboot, or batter pull..they all work fine now. How would I install one of the ME7 Odin images? Is there a doc on how to do that using Odin?
I just rooted a Verizon GS4 (VRUAME7) using this method. Everything went fine. I verified root with Root Checker, rebooted the phone, checked again.
Then I followed this method to install TWRP. When I rebooted the device as instructed, it got stuck on a splashscreen that has and Android logo and says "Downloading...Do not turn off target!!" :'(
The upper left in red says "Could not do normal boot. ODIN MODE"
I tried a battery pull, vol dwn + power, vol up + power and vol down + up + power.
How do I get back to normal boot or into TWRP recovery? I have a ROM I'd like to install, and as of now...it won't get past that splash screen.
What do I do?
Thanks!
First off youre in the wrong section. Questions go in the Q and A section. Second your on the me7 ota and you cant install a custom recovery/roms on the me7 ota. To get your phone booting again you will have to flash the stock recovery (not sure if someone has posted a stock recovery flashable via odin as I havent looked)or flash me7 again.

This worked perfectly.
Hopefully it'll won't fall back into that. Can't wait until I can ROM this sucker. Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag.
Since you have the update, boot the phone up in Odin mode and plug in your USB cable.
If you installed the desktop software you will have a Verizon folder in your start menu.
In that folder there should be an app "Verizon Software Upgrade Utility"
Run that and it should tell you you are up to date.
There is a repair utility within that app, run that and it should fix your problem.
It takes a while because it downloads the rom and then flashes it.
No guarantees, but I believe that will get you back to stock unrooted.
Sent from a Galaxy S4... Far far away
Sounds like he just got into download mode and didn't recognize it, and his rom, recovery, and everything was untouched.
To the OP, you're probably good if your phone has booted normally, works fine, and you're still rooted. You can't flash any roms or mods, but you can still apply some mods by simply pushing them to your /system partition, setting permissions, and rebooting. Either follow the instructions for which directory to put the file/files in, or you can open up a flashable zip and use the same path as the directories in the zip.
You should even be able to push a modded framework-res.apk and SystemUI.apk and rename the old ones, once people start building ME7 roms, though I can't guarantee it'll work. All you can do is try, and now you know how to get into Download mode to use Odin if it doesn't work.
As far as plain lag goes, just freeze alot of the bloat, there's around 50 apks (in MDK, anyway) that aren't doing anyone any good. Then grab a cpu app like Trickster Mod and see what, if any, parameters the stock kernel enables you to change. If you can set the Interactive cpu governor, Deadline scheduler, Performance gpu governor, and increase the read-ahead size, you should see a significant improvement.

Back to stock...thanks for the link below. The no-wipe version did not work for me. However, My Samsung Boot Screen still says custom.
I've been running Beans rom all day without issue. I've never updated to ME7. Tonight, I enabled autocorrect in my stock keyboard and read I needed to reboot for it to take effect. Upon reboot, it hangs at the Samsung Screen and Custom at the bottom. I downloaded the no-wipe odin as I can't find a full stock odin tar anywhere, and I've attempted to install it twice but after installation, it reboots, a little green android comes on the screen, and then it goes back to the Samsung Custom screen. I can't access recovery at all. Thoughts?

Thanks. Flashing now. I hope it works. For the life of me I can't figure out what happened. I edited features.xml to change disableautocorrect from true to false. This one did the trick, however, it still says Samsung Custom. How do we get rid of that?
If youre unrooted I would boot into stock recovery and factory data reset then reboot a couple of times to see if it registers that its a stock phone. Triangle away supposedly gets rid of it, never used it so I cant confirm. TA needs root tho. The custom boot screen has never bothered me so I havent done much research on it. I have seen a few threads posted about it tho so I know theres an answer somewhere on the forums.

All that happens is that a yellow triangle appears with text under it saying: "System software not authorized by Verison Wirless has been found on your phone. Please turn of your phone and go to the nearest Verison Wireless store for help" with red text in the upper left hand corner saying "secure fail: kernel" I do not have trouble getting out of this screen. Also, when ever I reboot my phone, "Samsung custom" appears.

Download goomanager, allow super user access, then hit your menu key and tap install open recovery script. It should proceed to install twrp. If you want to get rid of the Samsung custom screen you'll need to look up triangle away by chainfire on XDA and install that app in a Verizon stock ROM (hyperdrive or any other custom stock ROM). Then you'll want to tap reset flash counter, read the instructions and hit ok. It'll reboot into download mode and show you your device status in the top left hand corner. When you finish reading it hold your power button until the phone screen goes black and vibrates. It'll proceed to reset your flash counter on the next menu if you hit your volume up button then reboot. It's important that you only use triangle away on a stock ROM only. I hope I was able to help.

Go to settings, about phone, and check your baseband. Did you get the phone recently? If you did you probably won't be able to get stock android. If you can flash custom ROMs that include aosp based ROMs as well as custom stock ROMs you most likely have the VRUAMDK bootloader.

I have I545VRUEMK2. I got the phone for Christmas.
It most likely is locked down then. There's currently no way to boot aosp ROMs on the MK2 bootloader. You'll have to install safe strap and you'll only be able to load custom stock ROMs. I've heard hyperdrive ROM is really good and has aosp theming. You should read up on how to install safe strap recovery.

So I can not install stock but i can install custom ROMs like Cyanogen? And what is Safestrap?
You can't install cyanogenmod or any other aosp ROM, Verizon locked the bootloader hard with the MK2 update. And you can't Odin to an older firmware or you'll hard brick your phone. You can only install touchwiz ROMs. Safe strap is the only recovery that works with MK2 firmware.

We'll all help you out.. Just I think when someone hops on XDA for the first time it can be overwhelming.
What I did when I started was hopped on Google then typed " XDA Verizon Galaxy S4 "
The first result will be the main XDA page for our phone and it will have all the forums you'll need..
Verizon Galaxy S4 General
Verizon Galaxy S4 Q&A
Verizon Galaxy S4 Android Development
Etc....
And from there if you browse through General you would have seen the stickies created addressing the sort of thing your trying to do...

I have a verizon galaxy s4 (SCH-I545). I flashed the NC5 onto the phone after rooting it. I tried to install Philztouch onto it, but something froze up/crashed during the process. I now do not have ANY type of recovery, and the phone goes directly into download mode when trying to boot recovery. :crying:
I deleted and/or frozen anything knox from the phone... it still operates even w/o knox or a recovery in it!!
My situation is that I have used odin to try flashing twrp and other recoveries to the phone. odin says it was successful, but it still has no recovery or doesn't boot into recovery, and I want to install some custom rom's onto it. there is no safestrap and I don't want it.
So, how to put the stock or any other recovery on this phone so I can add new roms???

If you are on NC5 then Safestrap is your only option.

ok. my next addition/question is: will Surge's full wipe and/or pit file bring back the stock recovery so I can start over? this phone is cracked to now run on MetroPCS/T-mobile sytem and I don't want to go back to vzw.
So, will the pit file bring back my recovery... it does not have ANY recovery at all on the phone. here's the pit file I'm referring to: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23269279319199111
thanks.
edit
Even if I wanted to put safestrap on this phone, there is not any type of recovery in it to use to install safestrap or any other rom or recovery on it.
I have tried odin and it says it worked but will not boot into recovery, it goes directly to download mode. the phone runs, boots and has wifi, data, etc.
I want to know before I go into this if the pit file will work and not mess up things or should I try the entire process? The phone is working but NO RECOVERY IS INSTALLED ON IT AT ALL. (needed to emphasize this fact).
thankz again

If all you are looking to do is install safestrap then you can just towelroot/superSU/BusyBox/safestrap. If you mean recovery mode, as in holding down the power, home, and volume up buttons when booting up the phone, I'm not sure how to get that back on if its missing.

Seems to me you had MDK boot loader and custom recovery prior. And that you have blindly flashed the full NC5 build updating everything including your boot loader to a nice new shiny LOCKED one. If the boot loader is NC5 you get to join the Safe Strap club.

Yes, I mean recovery mode

The phone is rooted, and I need to somehow replace or install a recovery so I can put a rom into it. and I don't have to use safestrap if i can put twrp or something else into it.

I was on 4.3 then got the OTA update and tried to flash it back. it crashed the phone. Ii was stuck in download mode, and i flashed via Odin the NC5 full wipe on this forum then later rooted the phone. I tried to install Philz touch, but it crashed or froze up during the process... and viola!! NO RECOVERY WHATSOEVER IS ON THIS PHONE.
When I try holding down the power, home, and volume up buttons when booting up the phone, it goes straight to download mode no matter what button combination i use.
I don't care about stock or any warranty... that's over and I had this phone converted from Vzw to MetroPCS already.
I tried safestrap before and I don't like it. I need to somehow replace or install a recovery so I can put a rom into it. and I don't have to use safestrap if i can put twrp or something else into it. So, it is open for custom roms and i'm looking at SlimKat to install on this phone. Now, if somebody has a tar file I can flash with Odin... then it's all good.

If there was a way to go back from NC5, there would be a lot of happy people around here, but there isn't. Having recovery mode makes no difference because your on NC5 now. You can't flash TWRP, you can't flash CWM, Safestrap is it.

ok. so if I try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735172&page=10
will it put me back to a phone with stock recovery on it? can i use the .pit file to do it or the whole process?
Download the stock recovery and flash it using flashify.
I did the same thing you did with a S5 because I didn't know about the boy loader issues and thought I had bricked it because it would only boy into download mode. But after turning it off for a few seconds I saw that it was able to bout into the stock rom. Luckily I made a backup of the stock recovery with flashify and flashed it back and it was fine.

I have no idea. I have never lost the android recovery mode you get into by holding home, power, and volume up to boot the phone. Did you try asking on that thread?

So, are you saying to use Surge's full wipe and pit files and I can get back my stock recovery? or is there a link to what you are talking about? hook me up with that link.
I do not have any backups and I an get flashify no prob. but I am not sure it will work as you indicated.
how about Heimdall? will it work and do the things Odin isn't doing? I haven't used the program but have a copy of the files on my PC. I need a little guidance before I kill this phone forever.
l. tried flashify and rom installer... flashify says it found and backed up my stock recovery, but when I try to flash it back it says success and reboot. then it still goes into download mode and the little red letters say unable to do normal boot.
I can get back to normal boot and the phone runs. I tried the buttons to get into recovery mode, and it still goes to download mode. I also tried to flash twrp with rom installer and it also says successful but the same results>>> download mode only. WTF!!?
I seem to need a tar file for all of this to work and most of the roms are zip files except Surge's files. anybody have a link to tar files with the recoveries in it?
As has already been stated in this thread , if you're on the nc5 bootloader, you can't flash twrp or cwm or any other custom recovery. Even if you get the stock recovery back, it won't matter. SS is you're only option. There are a million posts on this issue. There are a number of custom roms that you can run, most are TW based though.
