[Q] No download/recovery mode nightmare... - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi chaps,
I've had a UK (O2) GT-I9100P for about a year running the standard ICS firmware.
Was waiting for ages for O2 to release Jelly Bean for the 9100P but they didn't show any signs of doing it, so I used odin to flash with their version of Jelly Bean for the basic 9100. A few places online told me it should be fine, besides I never used the NFC capabilities anyway.
Phone worked ok, but there were still a few annoying little bugs (like the home button not working 90% of the time).
A couple of days ago, Kies tells me that it's downloaded the 4.1.2 firmware for the 9100P, but of course it won't install it as it now recognises my phone as the basic 9100.
Tried to flash it with Odin, but found that it won't enter recovery or download mode. I've tried the usual button combinations, but it just boots as normal.
I've tried various apps which are supposed to be able to root the phone from the device itself so I can get it all sorted out, but none of them work.
I'm now a little stuck...
Would really appreciate any expertise, I've got very limited knowledge of this sort of thing!

Make or buy a USB Jig. Use it to force your phone into download mode.
"To err is human, to forgive is divine."
Sent from my SGS II

Will the jig definitely work? I've just ordered one on ebay and hopefully will have it by Friday.
Oddly, my phone went into Odin mode about 2 minutes after my last post, but didn't seem happy to receive a flash. Tried it again since and it doesn't work again....

When it comes to android phones, nothing can be guaranteed. A jig should work though.
Try turning off your phone, removing the battery for a few minutes, re-inserting the battery and holding down the Download mode button combo. See if that gets you into Odin mode.

If Odin flashing fails, check out this thread:

Thankfully I've made some progress!
Using the "holding a button whilst plugging in" trick I managed to get into download mode and restore the correct stock rom for the O2 9100P.
Still having a few issues though, like the home button doesn't work... Anyone got any suggestions on how to fix that one?!

Stock Galaxy S II (No root) stuck in flight mode

I got my Galaxy S II about 3 days ago and love it. Apart from some annoyances (I'm looking at you Touchwiz) no problems... installed Launcherpro and here we go
Today I woke up and bam. Flight mode.
Factory reset
Wipe USB storage and SD card
Wipe cache from recovery (stock recovery)
No change.
So now I have a very fancy Samsung Galaxy II Player. I called tech support and they asked me to try another sim (which I had done) then told me to clear the cache (which I had done) blah blah... then they ended up telling me to send it back to Amazon as faulty.
Great, just great.
Anyone else had this problem?
Nope, haven't had this.

I'm wondering... if I flashed an update.zip from stock recovery if the issue might go away... it's clearly software.
Just need to find an update.zip file....
Also something quirky is happening with regards to lock screens. Had unlock pattern enabled and then switched off however it still remains on but only needs a press on the screen to unlock.
Personally wouldn't try flashing if it's being funky. Last thing you want is to get stuck with non standard firmware if you still need to return it.

p.s.
This sounds similar except I can't turn Aeroplane mode on or off.

I have the same problem with the phone that I bought today (a problem I noticed after 15 minutes of purchase). Tomorrow I bring it to a Samsung service center to confirm it as DOA so I can do the replacement for the operator ... I am disappointed that I was wasting my time on these things ...
p.s after I try code *2767*3855# a have no problems for last hour...
today i have problems again and I replace my galaxy...I hav new one without any problems...
I have a somewhat similar problem.
My Galaxy S II randomly goes into flight mode every now and then. It's not a permanent thing like what you guys experience, but it is an annoyance.
Couple that with the "wifi sharing" bug and I think we can say that Samsung has some faulty radio firmware in the Galaxy S II.
flash the generic xeu of ke7 from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
this was tried but didn't work. Even a new radio package was flashed . Didn't help.
SGS2 running India distribution 2.3.3, unlocked. Not rooted. Stuck in flight mode, becacuse IMEI # cannot be read. Help !
could it be efs partition corruption?
It probably is /efs corruption. How do I recover it ?
Posting on behalf of my brother..
He to has this problem. Nothing we do fix's this resetting to factory defaults changing sim card formatting memory card..
Since it's done this.. it uses the battery from a full charge to near empty within ~5 hours
Bought 29th Aug 2011
They wont honor the warranty even though it broke down at only 2 months old.

Have you gone through Samsung directly? (Register on their website and request a repair).
I had this problem just now. Couldn't get it out of flight mode. Saying no sim etc...
The way I fixed it was to remove the sim and battery, replace them, turn the phone back on, the hold the power button to bring up the power options and press turn off flight mode. It now works again.
Not good that after I googled this problem it seems to be quite common.

I have this issue too, bloody annoying. I did a kernal update and I hope that fixes it. But will give your method ago.
My post is here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21557309#post21557309
I had an interesting problem. My phone sometime stuck on flight mode. I had to restart device 4-5 times to disable flight mode(flight mode menu becomes transparent or untouchable). After a while button becomes enable and phone starts normally. But it's annoying problem.
Now I'm using Lite'ning Rom v1.1 XXLPH. Even in stock LPH,LPB, KK5 2.3.6.... every firmware I had same problems occasionally.
What's the problem? There is nothing wrong with IMEI (but I can't see IMEI in flight mode).
go in it recovery and clear data and then go to fix permissions

So is there a simple solution for this anoying problem, or it cames back every time ?
With Android 4.0 or 4.1 is the same?
I need to know as I am thinking of buying one that as this problem, at a good price.
Should i buy it?
thanks
Have you tried to reflash with kies?
I believe there is a recover option there? Atleast that wont get your waranty voided.
Never actually tried it since i only use heimdall & odin but might be worth a try!

Any layman ideas?
Yep. You're in the wrong forum, this in for I9100/variants.

Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant T959 totally bricked.

Please Help me out.
I was using CynogenMod7 ROM. Could not write on my external SD card or mount it .
So decided to go back to Stock froyo firmware.
Tried ODIN to flash to my stock froyo firmware.
Had done it many many many a times earlier with success.
But ODIN could'nt complete the process, it kept on getting struck at Kernel and Factory some times.
Later thought there might be something wrong with bootloader.
Downloaded stock froyo bootloader.
Tried to ODIN the bootloader and got Struck at SBL many times ,Kept on trying then got struck at PARAM.
Removed the battery.
From than on NO Response what so ever combination buttons used.
No battery indicators,No light on Home keys, No signs of any power. Nothing Visible on screen & keys.
Tried usb JIG - no response.
Tried Ultimate UnBrick Resurrector-No response.
No lights .
Please solve my problem.
This may not work because I discovered this by accident. I bricked my phone so bad it looked like it wouldn't even turn on too. So, hopefully this works. Make sure you have your samsung drivers installed. Open Odin and connect the USB to the computer but not to the phone. Do a battery pull and do the three button boot, simultaneously connecting the USB to the phone. Most likely, nothing will happen. Hopefully, the phone will connect to Odin. Then, click start. That's right. Don't put any pit or tar files in, just click start. Hopefully, your phone will reboot to the vibrant screen and is stuck there. If it does, now you can reboot to download mode and Odin whatever files you wanted. If it doesn't work, just keep messing with the three button boot. I apologize for wasted time if it doesn't work. These steps are what I personally did on my phone. Hopefully, it works for you.
Sorry to say but I believe you have hard bricked your phone. If installing bootloaders goes wrong then your phone can turn into a paper weight. You could maybe try a jtag repair but I'm not sure it would help. You could call samsung and ask for a replacement, tell them you updated with kies or something but that's not exactly the truth

OK first, the stock images are 2.1 eclair not 2.2 froyo. Are you sure you have the right files? Are you sure your phone is a t959(3g, no front camera)and not t959v(4g, has front camera). Second, it sounds like a hard brick, if all else fails go to www.mobiletechvideos.com and check out the unbrickable mod and JTAG repair.
If you get your phone in DL mode and you have the correct Odin images, check the repartition box as well as others and run it.
Good luck

Remove battery and sim and microsd. Leave out and press and hold power for 30 seconds or so. Leave battery out for a few minutes.
Put battery in and if you are on GB bootloader hold volume up and plug in USB. Might get you to download mode.
I did that with a friends phone about a year ago and got lucky. Odin recognized it. I read that somewhere here on XDA. May be a shot in the dark... but when you get desperate any new ideas to try can be a relief right?
Good luck to you.
After I messed with bootloaders and then tried to get back to stock with Kies I had this problem.

I called Samsung and told them that I was just trying to upgrade to 2.2 with their software and they replaced my PCB (printed circuit board) for no cost (including shipping). I have no idea if they tried to figure out if I had really used Kies (if they could even figure it out with the state my phone was in) or if they just replaced the PCB blindly. Worth a shot, I'd say!
Thanks for your concern.

When you pulled the battery, after it hung up with Odin, you corrupted the primary Bootloader, because it wasn't completely written in......Last weak possible option is to try every rocker/battery/cable sequence ETC, to get Odin to handshake with the phone!!.....If there's still no sign of life after doing that....Your only option will be to have it JTAG,d in order to rewrite the primary bootloader file back in it.....it'll never power on unless the primary bootloader executes properly!!....you can corrupt the 2ndary BL and the phone will only be soft bricked, but a primary BL corruption is phone DEATH!!....Only place I know of that's reliable is: mobiletechvideos.com....send it to them, they'll rewrite the primary BL back in it and I think 2.1 or 2.2 for you and mail the phone back to you!!....Good luck let us know if you got it powered on with any combination, as that could save another Bricker from having to send it out!!

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100 won't turn on!

Hi there,
Firstly sorry if I have posted in the wrong place, i'm not too good with forums and or technology. About two weeks ago, my sister had passed me down her old Samsung Galaxy S2 which she had been using for more than a year. She's had no problems with it what so ever. Up until today, I was browsing the internet, when the internet 'app' crashed and gave me a pop up saying 'internet browser has stopped responding' or something to that affect. It then followed by a black screen where I was not able to do nothing apart from stare at the screen. I popped out the battery, waited a couple of minutes and put it back in. The screen came on with the Samsung logo, but nothing happened from there on, it was frozen. So I repeated the process one more, and now the phone does not turn on at all! I really hope someone can help me out here.
The phone has never been rooted/flashed or had anything done with it.
I have tried leaving the battery out for a couple of hours, still nothing.
I've also swapped batteries and nothing happened.
Tried booting in recovery/download mode and nothing happened either.
I've also tried connecting it to my PC where nothing happens.
I'm hoping someone can help me here, I've only had the phone for two weeks and it's already broken! My sister had it for a year and no problems! Bump.
Thanks in advance,
So can you boot into recovery or download mode? Without either of those two there's nothing you can do apart from take it to a service centre. If you have download mode then you can flash a stock ROM using Odin.
Else, do you have warranty still as it's a year old? If you do, take it to the service centre under warranty.

Are you sure it's out of warranty? Samsung offers a 2 year warranty in some countries (afaik everywhere in the EU)

Thanks for the quick reply, unfortunately none of those methods worked for me, i'll try the USB jig and report back. If that doesn't work i'm guessing the motherboard is the problem right? Is Samsung able to repair the phone for me even if its out of warranty but with a cost? If so, how much do you think it will cost?
Thanks
You tried all of them in 15 minutes? Give them another go, it can take a few goes sometimes if you don't get it quite right. Otherwise, yes try the jig, but don't pin your hopes on it. Yes, they can repair it. The other (cheaper) option is to buy a handset with broken screen off eBay or similar and switch your motherboard. I'm sorry, I don't know the costs :/

A little solution
Plug in ur usb to the PC as the device is off....it should remain off for this...
Plug in and see if its charging via pc.....As for it to charge..it has to go through the repair which happens internally without you need to do anything...
A triangle should appear before charging icon appears..As it appears,, just right after that flash ur rom via odin disconnect dont boot now wait n again do the usb charging trick.....
Then boot it should probably be working up again..Well it worths for a try.......
Do it n post it.

Did you check the AUTO REBOOT option in Odin? Did you try to remove the battery for a couple of minutes and reboot?
Yellow triangle is normal
PLEASE READ THE FAQ said:
Q4: When I turn my phone on, I see a yellow triangle. What is it and how can I get rid of it?
It will appear if you have flashed a non-official kernel from download mode. If you flash kernels using CWM recovery, Mobile Odin etc. you won't get this yellow triangle.
The easiest ways to remove it are to use the app Triangle Away OR use a USB Jig.

Hi there:
I had bought the device in June 2011
I had the same problem about 7 months back and did as you suggested, was able to recover the firmware.
Now, I am facing the same problem today, my device started and was stuck on the Samsung Galaxy S2 logo.
Did the same thing again, the animated android logo appeared, and after some time the device was off.
I have been trying to get the device to switch on , but to no avail, the device is not even powering ON.
Device info: Unrooted , OS: 4.1.2
Please advice. Kindly treat this as urgent.
Many thanks in advance.

Phone not booting at all/charging/no signs of life = Samsung service centre or local mobile repair shop for diagnosis. Nothing anyone here can suggest beyond that if the phone won't even bootloop or be in a state where it's 'user fixable'.

Sorry For the late reply.
I guess, you need to boot in recovery
with home + power+vol up
and clear data and reboot
if that doesnt help.
try booting in download mode again and flash the firmware.
but let it charge first.

From functioning ok to nothing in a few minutes, I don't have any idea why. Is it really the motherboard?

[Solved] i9100 Stuck on Samsung logo on boot, Recovery Mode wont work green man shows

Hi all,
Searched the forum (and Google for that matter) for an answer but haven't found help on this particular query.
Yesterday my wife was charging her S2 (GT i-1900) at work via USB on her computer when an error message popped up on the phone stating something was wrong with fontemizer followed by freezing up. She restarted the phone a few times but the boot process only got as far as the white Samsung Logo and hasn't been able to get any further since. I've read that going into Recovery Mode and clearing the cache helps with this matter. Since I'm out of the country for the next 12 days, I tried to help her over Skype with getting into Recovery Mode (Vol UP+Home+Power) but for some reason it never gets her to the recovery menu. What happens is a green Android man shows up quickly (skype screen cap below), disappears followed by going right back to and freezing on the white Samsung logo. This happens every time. She's able to get into Download Mode (Vol DOWN+Home+Power) without any issue, but getting into recovery hasn't been possible. I've searched high and dry about why the green android man shows up temporarily but not into recovery and have found nothing. We really don't want to go down the reflashing a stock rom onto her device route as she's got a lot of unbacked up photos and videos that we don't want to lose so am hoping to find a fix to this problem that doesn't involve that.
Is there anyway we can get her into Recovery Mode without doing a stock reflash? And would clearing the cache help with this problem anyway?
Big thanks in advance to anyone in the know who can help with this matter!
Attached:
Screencap of the green Android man that shows up before quickly going back to and freezing on the Samsung Logo when hitting Vol UP+Home+Power
The thing is, flashing a stock rom via Odin won't wipe, unless you flash a 3 part firmware.
So what you need to do is go to samfirmware, and download the stock rom for your country & carrier. It will be a one part firmware, a tar.md5 extension. Don't get ICS 4.0.4. Do you know if it was on ICS or JB before? Best bet is to flash the same stock rom you were on before the issue.
So, flash the stock rom via Odin in download mode.
Regardless of flashing with wipe or non wipe: if you only want the photos and videos, they are stored on the internal or external sd card. They're not affected by a factory reset, or a wipe. So you should be good either way. Give it a a go.

I appreciate the response! To her (and my) surprise, after leaving the battery out of the phone overnight, the phone started up again without issue. No sign of errors and the phone is working perfectly fine. Wonder why it would be stuck on boot and a few hours later be back to normal? I've never experienced this before.
Meanwhile, I'm going to sort her out with Titanium Backup just in case... Thanks again for the help
Great! Goood to hear, I don't know how a long distance Skype flash would go Definitely get a backup going. If you're using titanium backup that means you're rooted, which means you can make a nandroid backup. I suggest doing that.
Good luck

I put [Solved] in the title, although [Mysteriously Solved] would be more fitting! Still wondering what caused the issue in the first place...
And now you have a working phone, get her to backup her photos and data as soon as possible....either to cloud storage or to a PC.......just in case......

S2 in bootloop. Possible to save important files?

Hello, my friend has a Samsung Galaxy S2 (international) like me. Mine however is flashed with CM10.2 and it's running fine. His however has problems.
Since he rooted his phone (With CF-root) he didn't have any video meaning he couldn't watch YouTube, or make video's, pictures etc.
A few weeks later his phone didn't boot up anymore.
I know how to fix this, which is just a simple factory reset or either flash stock JB. The problem is though he has some important stuff on his phone. Am I able to save his important files? For example some documents (pictures & video's don't get delete, I know that) smses, phone numbers, etc.
Please provide more details such as which firmware he is on now, and whether root was successful with cf root. Does the phone no longer power up? Can he access recovery and download modes?
If he has CWM, you could take a nandroid backup, transfer it to a PC and extract his data from it.
Or u could always use adb to pull his data, provided USB debugging was turned on.

He was on the stock JB 4.1.2 XWLSD. I contacted him and it seems that he cannot enter recovery mode anymore, neither can he acces download mode. The root with CF-Root was succesfull. He had superuser & CWM app as CWM recovery installed.
The phone started doing a little bit weird before he went to sleep. When he woke up, it did nothing anymore.
He also tried charging his phone for about 2 hours, and while charging entering recovery & download mode. Nothing happened.
Could this mean a dead motherboard? If not, am I able to acces download mode with my USB JIG?
Hang on. You said the phone was bootlooping. And you also said the phone is dead. It can't be both; this isn't a 'Schrödinger situation' - it's one or the other.

If the phone shows no signs of life, even after using a USB Jig, it would mean a trip to the service centre and possibly motherboard replacement. You could also swap mobo's from a second hand S2 (like with a cracked screen or something). But its very unlikely that a phone will simply get hard bricked!
Try a JIG and see. Also try another battery too.

Yes, that was before he gave me more information. I assumed it was a bootloop, it however seems that his phone is dead.

It indeed seemed weird to me too. I tried my battery in his phone and it also did not power on, and I could not acces recovery nor download mode. I used a JIG and to me surprise that did nothing too. It seems that his phone is dead, in quite an odd way. I never experienced anything like this before, that a phone simply get's hard bricked, just like that. Without doing anything to his phone.
A service center is no option for him, probably the mobo will be replaced but since he has no warranty the expenses would be pretty high.
He's getting a new device, an S3. Only thing that upset him is that he won't be able to recover his pictures of his deceased grandparents.
Anyway, thanks for thinking a long!
