Hi everyone,
I am giving a family member my old Note to take back to australia. She is with Telstra there. I have rooted it previously, but have returned it to stock and am looking to root it again. Does rooting it essentially unlock it? Will she be able to use it in Australia in Telstra and is there a preferred ROM or MODEM that might be best to install for her?
Thanks for any help you guys can offer.
You can call at&t and ask for the unlock code. Tell them you will be using the phone out of the USA and they will give you a code and instructions.
Root means you have access to the root directory of the file system. Unlock means your phone is not locked to a specific carrier. Root and unlock are not related.
When you are ready to pass along the phone, just reset the phone to factory and remove your sim and sd card.

Even if I install a custom rom, it still won't be unlocked? I installed an At&T based rom and was able to use it on Telus in canada. Doesn't that mean it was unlocked?
If you were able to use it with a Telus sim card then your phone is unlocked. ATT ROM and modem should work fine for Telstra. Not sure if the LTE band is the same though.
<Wikipedia: List of LTE Networks>
Telstra is currently using Band 3, with eventual expansion into Bands 7,8 & 28. A long way from Band 17 used by AT&T and other operators in the Americas.

I'm about to purchase a carrier unlocked T-Mobile version of the hTC HD2 from eBay.com and I wanted to know if I happened to flash ROM with something different if it's going to somehow get rid of the "unlocked"ness.
I'm heading to South Korea next next weekend and I'll be using it there, so I just want to know if there were any problems with the phone and had to hard reset it; if the phone is going to return back to its original state where T-Mobile had it carrier locked.

no, once unlocked, you cant lock it again, no matter what you flash.
Thanks. Is it possible to unlock the device myself?
no. only buy a code, or from original network.
Atrix network locked"phone is subsidy locked"or"network unlock request unsuccessful"
Hi, I have atrix, borught in last year and got reaplced with at&t in feb2012..It was under the at&t policy so got replaced with refub atrix in feb 2012.
I was travelling abroad in may2012 (india) so I asked the unlock code. they provided me the code.. But unforchunately I enter wrong code 10 to 20 times (i know I am stupid here)... So contacted to at&t cust care.. they said you have correct code... now it has not working with at&t sim also...
so could you guys please tell me the solution to unlock sim so I can use in India???
My atrix is 4.5.91 with baseband 1.77.36
I rooted, unlock bootloader, and factory reset few times already...
Even now it was asking "sim network" unlock code but it wasnt successfull...it give me message "phone is subsidy locked"or"network unlock request unsuccessful"
Is it possible to use custom rom or new update 4.5.141 or any international baseband to use in India or atlead accept unlock code so I can use it...
THanks
PS I am not expert in phone roots or customs etc..but I am above average (with instr I can format or updates roms)
all i can say is that i have read in the forum that if u change ur radio then even valid unlock code wont work. so my suggestion it to get back to stock every thing (as much as possible) and try the unlock code again.
try using fruitcake to get back to stock and best of luck with that

I have changed my radio many times and unlocked without any issues a few weeks back after getting the code from AT&T. I fail to see how a change in radio will prevent SIM/network unlock when AT&T themselves update the radio through their OTA upgrades. Even after unlock you can still continue to OTA with AT&T, have your radio updated through the OTA, (with a stock phone and locked bootloader of course), and not have problems. Without researching what you say further, I can only assume that changing the radio from AT&T to an international variant might cause problems. Do you have a link to where you read this?
Also, when you have used all attempts to network unlock, (10 tries I believe), you are hard locked.
I attempted to move on stock 4.5.91 and tried to unlock but still not able to
"phone is subsidy locked contact your network provider"
Is there way out from here

I am moving to Taiwan next month and I wanted to unlock my phone to be able to use SIM cards from their carriers there. I am planning to call Sprint to have them do it for me OTA but I just wanted to check on a couple things first.
1. If I decide to install a custom ROM after Sprint does the SIM unlock, will it "break" the unlock? I'm not exactly clear on what controls the locking of the SIM card so I just want make sure I know what to avoid doing to my phone in order to keep the phone unlocked for international use.
2. If I cancel my Sprint service and only use the phone on an international carrier will the SIM unlock stick? I'm assuming it would but I just want to make sure because of my ignorance of how this whole SIM unlocking thing works.
Thanks in advance, any insight about this topic would be greatly appreciated!
The ssu app will work if your on KK.
Once it's unlock it stays unlocked.

Thanks for the link! I think I'll try going the free route first and have Sprint unlock it for me. If I end up running into any problems in the future with flashing ROMs, it's good to know that there's an app I can buy to keep it unlocked.
Is anyone working on a bootloader unlock for the AT&T 2015 version?
One HUGE thing we are missing is the ability to install apps and obb data to the external sd. This can only happen with root access, and root access can only happen with a bootloader unlock as far as I'm aware.
someone posted here about a new exploit that made the news but we have to wait and see i guess..
sorry i forgot what topic the guy posted that in.
maybe google it up with keywords like "Android exploit root"
The Verizon XT1528 and the AT&T/Cricket branded XT1527 have locked bootloaders that do not qualify for the Moto Bootloader Unlock program. Some people have had limited success getting temp root on the Verizon model by using Kingroot, but /system remains write protected.
However, people who want to use the phone on AT&T have an out: the Moto-direct factory unlocked model, which is currently under $100 on Amazon, has all of AT&T's bands and qualifies for the bootloader unlock program, which means you can install a custom recovery and root.
Verizon users, however, are left out in the cold, as the Moto-direct model lacks CDMA bands and Verizon's LTE Band 13.
This sucks! I accidentally bought an xt1527 from Amazon from a secondary seller and got the ATT version instead of what I thought was the international version. Doh! I didn't realize the ATT version has a permanently locked bootloader. Oh well, this was going to a niece as a gift and I just wanted root so I could install adaway for her.

Ok, I've read around and since there are so many different answers, I need to ask and hopefully get a redirect to a confirmed thread or a straight up answer. I bought my daughter a 2015 Moto E phone. I got it from Amazon and it was advertised as factory unlocked GSM for use on AT&T or TMobile. Great, we are on TMobile so thats just right. I get it in the mail and its in an AT&T GoPhone package. Its the right XT1527 model and had all the right bands for TMobile so thats ok. I've already gone to att.com/deviceunlock and am waiting for my unlock code which customer service said wouldn't be an issue. But, its got all the crap AT&T apps preinstalled. I know where to find the 5.1 TMobile XT1527 firmware. If I flash that on my phone, will there be any negative side affect since its officially an AT&T branded phone? Do I have to wait for the SIM Unlock to be done first?

If you ordered this specific (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TFAVFL4) from Amazon, return it and get your money back. The factory unlocked model sold through Amazon does not come in a GoPhone package, comes in the standard Moto box. It also does not need any unlocking via AT&T's device unlock, just pop in the SIM and go.
Both the Moto-factory-direct and the AT&T/Cricket Moto E2s have the same model number, XT1527, but the AT&T/Cricket model has a bootloader that cannot be unlocked at present, so no perm. root, no /system read-write access, no custom recovery/ROMs, etc.
T-Mobile never carried the Moto E2, so there are no T-Mobile-branded ROMs available. And with a locked bootloader, I doubt you'll be able to install the Moto-factory-direct stock ROM (with no carrier bloat).

Thank you. For this phone, I'm not concerned about unlocking the bootloader. Its for my daughter, shes 9, as an emergency phone as well a starter phone. I got the ATT unlock code and it worked so its working fine on my TMo SIM. I tried a couple other firmwares and they softbricked the phone so I put the ATT one back on, disabled the ATT apps and its as close to stock as its gonna get.
