Hi everybody,
I have been forced to open this thread because of a curious and, as It seems by the searches I made, quite rare problem affecting the network capability of my GT-i9100.
Basically, the phone won't make calls nor send sms (saying that It is "not registered on network"), but at the same time It will be perfectly capable of connecting to the internet (browsing the web, navigating the Playstore, using Whatsapp, ecc..) through 3G network.
Looking in Settings>About device>Status, It shows to be regularly connected to my mobile carrier, even though "Service state" is "Out of service".
Even if I try to manually select the network operator from Settings>Mobile Networks It says "Unable to connect".
I've first tried to verify the carrier network functioning by moving the sim card to another phone (which works perfectly) then, thinking It was fault of the Cyanogenmod I was running (cm-10.1-20130728-NIGHTLY-i9100), I've brought the phone back to complete stock (PDA: I9100XWLSW,
CSC: I9100ITVLS2, MODEM: I9100XXMS3) and made a full wipe, without any positive results.
At this stage I have to say I'm getting a bit put out and, having to fly abroad in two days, desperate for solutions. Any idea?
Thanks a lot in advance.

Tried to reset apn settings but no results. Checked the Imei and It displays the number you see in the attachment, but I don't know if it's any different from the original.
As for the EFS folder, I've got a copy of It in my sdcard. I guess it counts as backup. But are you suggesting to restore it?
I can't still understand how, if there is something wrong with network settings, I can't make nor receive calls and messages but I can normally use my data plan to connect to the Internet and follow this thread from my Galaxy.
What you have is the test imei from samsung. Restore it pls. With test imei 00000bla bla you can use data but no calls or texs which is what is happening to you. Some country networks let you make calls with this imei. But not yours. Can I ask what network and country your from. Just for my info

I'll go ahead and get a couple things out of the way that other people will probably tell you about with varying levels of aggravation (don't shoot the messenger, I couldn't care less):
This is a question. It goes in Q & A. The development forum is for development.
Odin is a dangerous tool, and you have to be careful with it.
If your MEID number is still valid in Settings -> About Phone -> Status -> MEID, then you are probably ok.
You may be able to *228, option 1. If that doesn't do it, try *22899.
If that doesn't work, activate an old phone on your account, then after a few minutes, reactivate your Samsung Fascinate. This will hopefully restore any of the EFS data that wasn't getting pushed by the *228 activation.
If your MEID in the Settings menu doesn't match the one printed on your phone under the battery, then the EFS data was corrupted and unable to rebuild after you cleared it. The only realistic option at that point is having it sent to Samsung.
thanks gizmo
question were u able to fix it i haven't done it i am always intrigued by stupid mistakes lol jk

Well, he deleted the OP that made it a little clearer... He actually cleared the EFS.
The phone section in ODIN is just a specialized field for flashing a radio file (PDA is like an all purpose). At least, this is what I gather from other's experiences. (Fully admitting that I have a bad memory).
But the "Phone EFS Clear" checkmark is for clearing the efs partition so that it will rebuild the files that contain your MEID number. It also clears the information that is pushed to your phone during activation.
Given that everything was set up properly, he should be ok after activating again... but that's not always the case. If you clear the EFS data and the files that repopulate the data with your MEID are corrupted, then there is no way to regenerate that info without shipping your phone to Samsung.
Given that no one much talks about the EFS partition on the Fascinate, I've only learned this info from the other Galaxy S variants, where backing up the EFS is a major first step before changing anything.
There is a small possibility that these principles don't apply to the SF, but I'm thinking that until someone proves otherwise, it's better safe then sorry.
OP el-solve-ed his problem. Thread closed.
Hi all!
I just installed the latest Black Android Theme V2.5 LIVE (runnin' Lightning ROM 6.1) and everything looks good but I can't get any mobile connection... In the upper right corner there's a symbol for "no SIM" but my SIM is in and was working fine just awhile ago???
I've tried restoring old backups, with and without wipe and i've also installed new fresh ROM's but nothing seems to work.
I've even tried my girlfriends SIM but it's all the same....
PLEASE does anyone know an answer to my problem? I really don't want to restore the phone and send it on service!
man just go to settings > wifi and networks > network operators (something like that) and search for your sim carrier operator after the search choose your operator and it wil register to it and you will be able to call and it will recognize your sim..
if it does not work then try to update you modem and change apn settings (maybe even update to your carrier csc).
Your sim is probably after getting corrupt. It happened to me. Got a new sim card and it was fine again.
They only have a certain lifespan and do pack up all of a sudden without any particular reason, especially if its a few years old.

Thanks for the answer but I can't reach the settings for your talking about...it's grey'd out and if I hit it then a "OK" box appear which tells me that I don't have a SIM card.

Yeah, i've made 2 backups. One on the internal SD and one on my computer. But when I've been reading about it, it seems that people that made the backup with root explorer might be in trouble...like me.
It has something to do with permissions getting lost...
Do you know which way is the best to copy the backup and overwrite the existing one? Terminal or Root Explorer?
When I'm doing it with root explorer I can't get rid of the existing nv_data.bin and nv_data.bin.md5?
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

mate regular back up is not the one you need. efs folder is a folder that contain your imei - and it need special comands in order to back it up. there is a way to do so in android original development thread but i am afraid its to late for you. but i have seen few people solving this issue by getting copy EFS of second SGS2 and they made it work. i cant help you futher in this issue but i really feel for you.
when i saw your thread i though omg...i hope this guy didnt f...up his galaxy...and i just gave you an idea to check imei hoping that it wont be that case...well at least you know whats going on... and i wish you all the best..
You are lucky you have a backup, install a terminal editor.
copy your nv_data.bin to your internal sd card
Code:
su
cp /sdcard/nv_data.bin /efs/nv_data.bin
rm -rf /efs/nv_data.bin.md5
remove your sim card and reboot the phone then
do this
Code:
su
busybox chown 1001:1001 /efs/nv_data.bin

If your phone is more broken than it was before its not my fault but this should work.
Hello, today I got a live demo unit from Samsung, but it's a small problem, in this device, it is not possible to use the phone part, it is possible to fix this? phone is not locked, and the sim card is in working, and all apn is i order, but it wont register on the network.
NEW INFO!
My phone is "out of service" and i cant turn it on, so i can use it.. can some one please help me.
the raido is working, becasue WIfi is working, the same with thew bluetooth, so it seems to be loocked for use of sim cards.
please help me some one?
my imei is a very strange imei starts with 00499................
Hello Jespersen84. Seems like i9300 live demo units don't have their own IMEI (they all have the same) and the EFS folder isn't complete, some files are missing.
You can use everything, except phone calls, sms, mms and 3G data.
Thats correct,
but i was hoping it can be fixed, maybe change imei, or is it possible to copy the files that are missing to the efs folder?
i have tried to root it, i have installed new custom rom, nothing wil work, i thing i have to cange the IMEI to get it to work.

Closed, as changing, and discussion changing IMEIs is illegal, and against XDA rules.
my gf lives in another country atm and i cant put my hand on her phone, that atm isnt rooted and still on gb.. she had a prob on her sg2, we were talking on skype we ended the call and suddenly she lost all connection to networks and seems the phone using *#06* doesnt show any IMEI.
any chance i can restor it? i dont have any bkup tho.. but ive seen somewhere that ODIN has a feature to clear EFS folder and android reassign a new IMEI..
is that true? is it working? this thing will kill the warranty from samsung?

As gaeilge pointed out, without a backup it may be difficult, but you could try this tool here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.hellcat.droiddev.ktool&hl=en
Or this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.helroz.GSII_Repair&hl=en
If all else fails there's a dev on this forum, that for a small donation maybe able to fix the problem for you!
Try search efs/imei problems!
Hi there.
Hope someone can guide me on this. I've been reading all the posts related to unknown imei, lost efs folder, etc and tried several things to solve the problem, but anything worked out.
The phone got wet with some raindrops (very few raindrops). Warranty was lost because they told me the motherboard was damaged by water. At first the battery exhausted in no time and it didn't charged properly, but a couple of months later everything seems to be all right except that it tells there's no IMEI, and the SIM card isn't read by the phone. Later on I've brought it to another technical service where they've told me the motherboard wasn't damaged, but the SIM connector. They wanted me to pay a big amount of euros for such a little piece. I picked up the phone and decided to investigate by myself.
The actions done to the phone: I fisically opened it and applied a connector cleaning spray; then I upgraded it to ICS and finally rooted it. Then I tried lots of solutions that are posted in the forum, like the GSII_repair, busybox, backup of the efs folder via android-sdk, efs pro, etc.
The only thing about efs that I can read in the phone are two files: an efs.tar.gz and an efs.img.
The efs.tar.gz seems to contain everything needed to restore EFS folder: nv_data.bin, nv_data.bin.md5, etc.
I have no idea how to tidy all this mess up. I know that it's possible that the phone won't work again because of the rain, but I want to sold all the possibilities out before using it only as an ipod galaxy, and I resist thinking that if it was damaged by water the phone woulnd't work ok like it does.
What do I want? Trying to give it its IMEI number again and seeing whether it catches signal. Any idea on how to do that with the files efs.tar or efs.img.
Thank you so much.
Since you have some kind of an EFS backup, then you can use kTool, in the Google Play Store, to restore that backup.
kTool requires root.
Hi and thank you for the reply.
I've downloaded this hc-ktool and tried to restore EFS from backup via efs.tar.gz and via efs.img but anyone worked out. It still says "unknown IMEI". Any idea about why it didn't work?

Not really, I am still a noob in Android.
Do you have unknown baseband problem? If yes, then try flashing another modem via Odin.

In the baseband section it tells UNKNOWN, as well as the telephone number, IMEI, IMEISW and Bluetooth. D'you think changing the modem will change all the other unknown stuff? I'll try it anyway, thanks.

Nothing to do with the modem. I changed it and everything's still the same.
Still rounding the problem... I installed root explorer and I saw there is an original efs folder in the root of the memory, not in the internal sdcard of the phone. So, what can the problem be? Is the phone really damaged? Or do someone think is only a software matter (is the efs folder corrupted?). Anyone can help?
