Is there a way to block access to browsers? I would like the user of a Samsung galaxy Pocket (version 4.0.4) to be able to access one browser only.
---
Reason for my enquiry:
The browser in use has a blacklist filter which block websites, but indeed you can easily bypass it by installing a new browser.
My past attempts:
I have searched for a long time but could not find anything that worked. The browsers I have found which can block other browsers are not compatible with this device.
I have also searched for alternative ways of blocking websites though a blacklist but all of those solutions require rooting the device, which I do not have enough technical confidence to do.
Blocking Play store is not either an option since you would be able to install new browsers in other ways.
I don't think you're going to find any -no root- solution to this, Rooting is very easy these days for most phones, usually just a plug in and click a button procedure. Gone are the day's of mounting filesystems and meticulously typing in adb commands and sitting there nervously while your phone potentially bricks itself...!

why would you block websites?

Hi,
I thought maybe you guys, if anyone, would know. I am looking for an app that can:
- make a log of all the other apps, including stock ones, that make attempts or actual connections to the internet, and at what time
- be able to intercept those connections
- preferably I would create a white list of apps that are allowed to connect, but others do not have permission.
Purposes include:
- saving on bandwidth in poorer countries where internet is expensive.
- making sure apps or malware doesn't try to send off my data when it shouldn't be.
- prevent annoying background sync/apps from running when I don't want them
I find it strange that we either give all the permissions the app wants, or it doesn't work. Why can't we restrict their internet access?
Does this sound feasible? Does it already exist?
I'm rooted and using an Asus Transformer.
Thanks for any help
Try DroidWall. (root required)
It can block apps from connecting to the internet on an per-app based system.
But i don't think it has any kind of log or similar (haven't used it for a while, so might have been upgraded)
it looks like that does exactly what I needed, although I have to re-root my device for it to work again. Anyway, thanks for the tip
droidwall
droid wall definitely and yes it requires root.
Is there a way to block adds and social media bars with any android broswer?
Also, is there a concensus on which browser is best?
Last time I asked this in the Windows Phone 7 section I got my ass chewed that it is rude to block ads and blah blah.

Adfree app works if your rooted.

Firefox Mobile has the "Adblock Plus" extension available to it. It works.
However, unless it has been changed, it is a beast that takes a long time to load (in comparison to the alternatives).
-- end short answer --
Some release will drop XUL and go with native Android UI... and thus speed it up. I have not tracked the topic, but there was concern/question/reality that removing XUL would break compatibility.
There are a couple of Android wide ad blockers, but to my knowledge they all require root (as mentioned above), and all but 1 works by blocking entire domains (not the ABP regex approach).
Someone started an Android-wide Adblock Plus clone (it's in the market). He stopped and passed it on to a member of THE Adblock team. I contacted both developers. The "current" dev did not respond, so my hopes are low. (The big problem is that ABP is Javascript, and the clone is a reimplementation in Android-Java.)
If you're rooted then use an app called "Ad Away" from the market. I been using it for quite a while now and it works flawlessly.
Do Ad Away also block Adds from "free Apps"? And could you say that its better tan addfree?
It would be nice to be able to turn off all the Social Media links that seem to infect every single webpage on the Internet these days. I don't think that's possible with any software though is it?
Try AdFree Android, this blocks all ads on free apps by having a similar proxy blacklist like AdBlockPlus for webpages. It works very well.
I know this is a little off topic for the Evo 3D forums and even for XDA, but I thought it is worth sharing here since we all use PC's of some sort.
The browsers (Chrome and IE) on my PC were really sluggish today and I happened to notice that when my mouse was hovering over the screen there was a message at the bottom of the screen saying that it was waiting on the Google Analytics website.
I'm not sure if their servers are having problems or just overloaded today but I suspected that might be the cause for my browsers' sluggishness so I did a Google search and found this page that has plugins available to opt out for most of the PC based browsers. I'm not sure why browsers other than Chrome need plugins but I'm guessing it's because Google's websites force that data collection. Although I mostly use Chrome these days, you really need to keep IE around on a Windows system for compatibility with some websites and apps.
I've installed the plugins for Chrome and IE and my browsers seem to be faster, and I feel a little better about my privacy.
Edit: Apparently at least some these plugins have been available for almost three years. I'm glad I finally found them as I for one don't want to be waiting for a response from websites I use while Google is collecting statistics.
Hmmm...
I wonder if there are similar plugins or settings for mobile browsers that might bring this thread back on topic?

Thanks for sharing! That helped my firefox speed.
Update
I should have known it wasn't going to be that easy to opt out of Google Analytics using the Chrome browser.
After installing the plugins linked in the OP I was still seeing "waiting for www.google-analytics.com' at the bottom of the Chrome window. I'm not sure what exactly the plugin does but apparently it doesn't block code in a web page that explicitly accesses the JavaScript code on the GA website.
My next step was to add entries in my host file to redirect the GA URL's to localhost (127.0.0.1) and that just caused delays while the browser timed out waiting for a response from GA.
Finally I figured out how to create a manual filter in the Adblock extension to block access to the specific URL being used for the javascript code on the GA sever and that seems to have worked.
Now I need to figure out what is required to do the equivalent in the mobile browsers.
Any ideas?

hello guys i would like to know if it is possible to access the U.S playstore in the middle east on my s2 i9100, and whether it would work on other Android devices as well
i have used some VPN apps, but they just dont work for me it wont connect to the U.S servers.
is there anyone who can help me with this ,thanks in advance
Sounds like your carrier is blocking the VPN's, and if that is indeed the case, you're probably boned unless you find one which isn't blocked. Have you tried (A VPN) with a regular internet connection over WiFi (rather than over mobile data) to see if you can get around it that way ?
Have you tried US proxies ? (If you haven't, Google). From memory there are a number of apps which will 'proxify' any app that uses the internet (this can bit a bit hit or miss so far as whether an app will actually work this way or not though, like Orbot mentioned below). Also, keep trying VPN's; there are literally dozens (at least), if you want access to US GP badly enough, you'll try as many VPN's as you need to in order to achieve it. I know trying 5, 6, however many you've tried is a lot (and normally it would be), but you may have to try a lot more than that given your circumstances.
You could also try Tor; Orbot specifically - I have no idea whether GP will work specifically through Orbot in this way as I've never tried it (I do use it regularly on my phone for a bunch of other stuff though), theoretically it should though; any app that accesses the internet should be able to be made to route through Orbot/Tor; doesn't always work that way/easily though.
You'll need to manually configure Orbot to use a US exit node (which is relatively easy enough to do, Google for how to do this).
So...You can probably achieve this, but it depends on how motivated you are to do it. I understand a number of Middle Eastern countries impose all kinds of restrictions on the internet/telecoms, so based on what you've said, you're obviously going to have to work your way around them.
Edit - This page has instructions on how to configure Orbot to use exit nodes in a specific country only. Fairly simple. Again, whether it works or not, no idea as I've not tried it, but looks pretty straightforward.
Hi all. Not sure if this is exactly the right spot, but I thought I'd try.
So I did the WTF upgrade on my V30+, and after having set everything up, I'm left with a REALLY annoying artifact/feature.
Every time I visit a page on MSN.com or on Reddit.com and scroll down the page to read more, these websites ask me to install their app. I've tried saying no. I've tried saying yes, but then not installing. I've tried cancelling out. I've tried reinstalling Chrome and then tried Chrome Dev. No matter what I do (short of installing the apps, which I did not try), the web pages will continue to suggest that I download the app on EVERY SINGLE PAGE I VISIT ON THEIR SITES.
Suffice to say, I"m really annoyed at this "feature" and was wondering if anyone knows how to either get rid of it or suppress it once and for all. If it doesn't stop, I'm considering changing my default browser to something else.
Firefox Nightly and Brave Browser are two full featured browsers that give you more control of what displays on your screen.
May I suggest Adaway ad blocker for rooted devices?? Your post made no mention if you are using any ad block software!! It looks like a "sponsored" ad, nasty buggers!!:fingers-crossed:

Yep. I have AdAway running.
I also get those when javascript is allowed ...
Use a browser which can disable javascript - such as "Naked Browser",
or use e.g. Firefox with UBlock Origin in +/-"advanced user" mode and disable java scripts globally, then case by case allow them - this should prevent these kind of incidences by default

I tried to disable javascript, but that somehow also disabled all of the images on webpages from loading!

not sure which webbrowser you used - but yeah, the web nowadays is stupid - loading all stuff via external frames, external sites, etc.
you, of course, can circumvent those message via using e.g. reddit app or having it installed (not sure if merely installing it would make that message stop).
Another way would be to load the "desktop version" of the site, in that case, it shouldn't be displayed neither
Maybe I just miss my very out-of-date LG G3 experience where it didn't know how to deal with any of this. Heh.
Thanks for all of the suggestions, folks. I appreciate it. I'll keep playing around with Chrome and alternative browsers to see if there's a way to get it to where I want.
