[Q] Appropriate response to repeat questions - HTC One X+

I am fed up (and I suspect most are) with new users posting the exact the same issues over and over again, making no attempt whatsoever to search a bit and see if the question has been answered before. What would be an appropriate response to such posts?

@surfatwork, my recommendation is to totally ignore them.

I believe the experts should link them to the appropriate thread/post if the query has been answered before. No point despising them. Always remember that everybody was once a noob.

"Despise" would be a rather strong adjective. "Annoyance" - yes. There are noobs and there are noobs. I have absolutely nothing against people asking questions and answering them - that is obviously a fundamental purpose a forum serves. But it is also important to understad that a forum is a repository of information and people seeking assistance have a duty to search, find out issues that have already been discussed and solved, before firing off a post. A forum is not a customer service helpline. I dont know about you, but I do find it annoying when someone posts about a "bricked" phone, and the top 3 threads on the forum have been discussing exactly the same thing.
If noobs had to be pointed to the relevant discussion threads every time, then why have a search button at all? I dont condone laziness.

just don't reply and ignore them, simple

ICS, root and the usb jig

So, I'm going to wait until the official ICS update appears for my SII. (supposedly 19th of March)
However, I still want root without flashing a custom kernel. (not wanting to increment the custom flash counter)
My understanding is that if I update to the official ICS update then the usb jig becomes useless in resetting the counter. Is that correct?
The current method I used to root was via superoneclick, however.. that no longer works with ICS right?
If for example I wanted to reset the counter (if I did use a custom kernel for root) could I downgrade from the official ICS back to GB (using odin) and then use the usb jig to reset it?
NB. I use root for titaniumbackup, adaway and lbe privacy guard.
About half of what you've written is incorrect, and you can find the correct information from a little bit of searching and reading.

Huh, that's the second post I've seen of yours that is entirely unhelpful.
You can only do so much searching and this sub-forum is called "Q&A"...
AFAIK you don't need to flash a GB Rom to make usb jig work you can just flash an old bootloader and usb jig should work like a charm after that
You got that response because this question is answered several times a day on here. And the answer can be easily found with a few minutes legwork. XReal is correct. You can flash the old bootloader & a jig will work. So it looks like you've got a bit of research/searching (to find said bootloader) to do.

Still, there was no need for it. A better response would have been to either choose not to respond or post with a link to a post answering the questions. XDA has been getting a very bad reputation because of posts like the above. (hell I've been a lurker on here for quite a while opting instead to read information and posts rather than posting because of the above)

Its getting a bad rep because people refuse to search and clog the forums up with already answered questions
There's even a sticky in general saying don't create ice threads...people still do it
This is a development forum, not a spoonfeed n00bs & lazy people whatever they demand forum. And it certainly isn't a democracy. If people want to gain anything from their time here, they need to read & learn.
People who don't like that can go to Sammobile for all I (and a lot of people here) care.

Sure, people are posting ICS threads in general. Sure, there are people who are a bit ignorant but nothing is achieved by being rude. If it's been said a million times then don't post, let the thread die rather or until a mod locks it.
As to the bad rep, yep.. it's definitely because of people saying "use search" or "noobs". If you like I'd be perfectly happy to provide some examples? (oops, can't post urls at the moment until I've hit 8 posts)
There is a level of people keeping up with information and using search. And people who don't keep a constant watch on threads. (hence my post, I can't say I'm too enthusiastic about trawling through endless posts.. I did a bit of reading and searching, wasn't 100% sure so I thought I'd post in a question and answer sub-forum)
Anyway, I've derailed my own thread enough. xReal gave me the confirmation I was after.

its got nothing to do with that at all
Like i said, its because people refuse to search, refuse to read and refuse to educate themselves. Everyone just wants spoonfeeding.
Why do people insist on opening a new ICS thread when they could just ask their question in an existing thread? Theres plenty of them....it because people WONT search - they want the answer there and then like its something they deserve

To be fair, search is pretty bad unless you know the exact terms to search for. And reading through threads can often span a significant number pages. People see those gigantic threads and can only read so much before they become either frustrated or disillusioned.
Pretty often I've just resorted to using google site search because it gives better results than the inbuilt site search. This is a problem endemic of all large forums.
Of course there are poorly worded, poorly thought out posts where the person has not read or searched. But nothing is ever achieved by jumping up and down whilst screaming about noobs and demanding they use search. In less time than it took to post about noobs and using search a reply could have been formed linking to a thread with the answer or simply it could have been left to die with all the chaff posts.

yep the search is bad on here, using google with XDA added in the search terms works fine though and provides 95% of required results

OR, if they read up themselves, they wouldnt have to wait for an answer or get flamed from other users...it works both ways.
The only reason you are seeing so many 'use the search function' posts is because these inane threads with questions that have already been asked ans answered pop up more now than any other kind of thread...put it this way....i no longer come to this forum to garner knowledge/info/mods/techniques or anything like that anymore, i just come here to see what other useless threads have been created and what the responses were to said thread...its becoming entertaining as well as frustrating (theres also a reason why a lot of oinkylicious' recent posts contain the copied pasted section from the forum rules:
1. Search before posting
If people aren't doing this, then they are breaking forum rules and should be given a 'vacation'

Again, if people weren't so eager to be so rude this site would be much less frustrating for everyone involved. Case in point look at the tag added to this thread or oinkylicious' post. Not helpful to anyone in the least.
If someone can't contribute to a thread in a useful manner then don't post. The post rate is of a relatively high ratio that it'll quickly disappear into the ether.
And again, people can only do so much searching and reading. As you yourself said the site search is pretty bad and posts can often span a significant number of pages making reading up nigh on impossible unless you spend an inordinate amount of time obsessing over everything. You can't expect people to know everything.
I promised an example url earlier. Since I'm still not at 8 posts, I'll post it without the "http://" and hope the filter doesn't pick it out: pay.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/pse0m/rant_about_xda_short_and_angry_but_bear_with_me/
There is one heck of a lot of valid criticism in there.

Bunch of whiny users in that link you posted. And the important word here is 'users'.
You, like a lot of people are clearly under the misapprehension that XDA is a users forum. It is not. It is a development forum where users are tolerated provided certain 'rules' are adhered to by said users.
On XDA, developers come first, second, third, fourth, fifth and seventh. People who are prepared to read, learn and put in a bit of effort beyond searching for 20 seconds & throwing their hands in the air because they can't find something come sixth. And people who demand everything to be given to them on a silver platter don't figure into the equation whatsoever.
And your criticisms are completely invalid in the case of the question you asked, the answer is easily found in a minute in spite of XDA's crappy search facility (anyone who has been here more than 5 minutes knows to use Google with XDA appended to search terms). Why ? Because it's asked on here several times a day.
You can keep on digging a hole for yourself if you want tho.
Edit to add - Looks like it's your lucky day that I have fat fingers :-|

Maybe but this is a developers forum not a fix my phone forum .
Search may well be hard but as 90% of troublesome posters dont even bother to read the stickies faqs or guides dont mind reading the posts on the page they post on why should they be helped .
You asked
My understanding is that if I update to the official ICS update then the usb jig becomes useless in resetting the counter. Is that correct?
Its been asked multiple times their is even a post covering the topic .
First post on Google

Yet another question that has been answered multiple times .
Noobs come on here and get help all the time but their is a massive uprising by those that actually take the time to help against the ones that totally ignore the rules and demand everything dumped in their lap . If you where one of a few you would have got an answer but you are one of many sadly for this forum and its getting worse day by day .

If you can't address the points and complain about "whiny users" and so forth then why are you replying?
If this site was dedicated to purely developers then there would be a number of things for said developers. Namely things like an instance of bugzilla or other software for bug tracking and git (or something else like cvs *spit*) repositories for development to ensure versions and code submitting are kept on top of.
The fact that there are Q&A, Accessories etc sub-forums rather than just forums for development only counters your assertion.
Honestly, who is digging the hole? The ones who use Ad hominems and fail to address a single point or the ones raising the criticism?
You keep replying, so surely something I'm saying is quite valid.
A quick example of what a former mod classes this forum as;

Yes searching is in the rules and needs to be complied with, the problem most with non searchers is that they make the search harder as people search same thing and get another useless post asking the question and not the informative answers that they want.........!

[Q] Problem with the 10 post rule

Hey,
So I have been a regular visitor to this site for about 2 years now ever since I first rooted my HTC desire.
I have downloaded and tested many custom ROM's for the desire and the SGS2.
My recent favorite ROM is resurrection remix which i have been using various builds of since xmas. And only now do I have a question that no one has asked and I cant find an answer to.
Of course since I have never needed to post before when I tried to ask my question it wont let me because i have not made 10 useful comments. The only place I find useful comments is on the development forums. There is nothing specifically that I need from the other ares of the site and so I cannot offer any feedback that would be helpful to others there... the only place I can make useful comments is on the development forums, which is exactly where Im not allowed to make them.
So how does one get around that?
Luke
Probably not, but you can try contacting a moderator, the rule is there to avoid people joining and spamming the dev section with crap, if that isnt your plan they may be able to help you out.

Exactly the same situation for me (even down to the 2 years and HTC Desire ).
Do what I did and make yourself useful by answering others questions. You'll be surprised how much you actually know

Personally and apart from the spam issue the ten post thread in dev section is far to low a number one only has to read the inane posts from users with more than ten posts in many dev threads .
But how do you overcome the problem of a large amount of idiots posting who cannot be bothered to read the rules read the faqs or instructions and repetitively ask the same questions .it reflects badly on those who like the OP have taken time to read and learn as they are treated the same .
jje
That rule also stopped me in my tracks. But I can see the point on the development forums.
After the "no you can't" it encouraged me to look harder for answers and ask the (dum) questions on the general forum.
I realize the point is to avoid opening new threads for questions that might be better served in the appropriate development thread, but if you've searched and haven't found your answer I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem to post one in Q&A or General, but make sure you exhausted all search options before you do.
Same for me...To be honest I wanted to answer questions and help members, not to ask myself but... I see the point of the rule, there are too many people that will ask (dum) Q without even bothering to use the search tool and filling the threads with crap when there is no need to...
Solution:
make thread about it.
Answer all who replys
Profit

Also have same problem, I just posted a question here that I feel would be better suited to go in the Dev thread of the ROM I use.

Unfortunately, there will be some people (a minority) affected by this rule who probably shouldn't be (those who wouldn't post crap to dev threads from the get go), but at the end of the day it goes some way to reducing the mountains of crap which get posted to dev threads every day (at least 75% of posts in my experience. I'm probably being generous).
Again unfortunately (for the people who would do the right thing if this rule wasn't in place), no system is perfect in this regard. Frankly, I'd rather have the current system in place as opposed to making things open slather. Changing the current rule would make an already bad situation even worse IMHO.
Edit to add - As was suggested on the first page of this thread, you can always plead your case to a mod if you think the rule shouldn't apply to you for whatever reason.
Further edit - Poster above me. Your recent post in Q&A is a prime example of the type of post which should not be cluttering a dev thread. It is a general question, and not specific to a particular rom.

A great example of the mountains of crap that spew out of many of the users (if you look in there I'm sure I'm guilty too) in this forum, check out the CM9 discussion thread, imagine if that was in the dev thread, how would codeworkx and the others ever find anything that might be relevant?

This is true too, when I started I felt handcuffed by the 10 post limit, but I spent a little time reading posts and using the knowledge I gained to help out others and my post (and thanks) count quickly increased well beyond the limit. Helping others also gave me more understanding to be able to troubleshoot my own problems.
Yep that's exactly right Thracemerin, a perfect example.
I dread getting home from work & having to scroll thru 18 hrs worth/sometimes up to 40 pages of posts in the CM9 discussion thread & 90% of them are utter crap.
You're right, if it were in the dev thread, I think Codeworkx, Xplodwild et al would have given up ages ago.

I can see the point to it cutting down a number of people who would make useless comments, although the development forums are still littered with idiots who type before they think or even look around for a solution.

In the stickies on this forum is help for rebooting prooblems and so you think you've bricked your phone. Yet there constantly appears postings about phone rebooting and Please Help I've Bricked My Phone, and by far most of these it is the poster's first posting.
Maybe the rule should be that you cannot start a new thread, in any forum, until you have 10 posts. Every forum has a FAQ thread that they can post on if they have searched on here and can't find anything.

Do you have general questions? Read the amaze bible!

I've seen a LOT of questions that are already answered in the amaze bible, linked in my signature.. feel free to ask any general questions here after you've gone thru the bible- but chances are, the answers are in there! If anyone finds a question that isn't answered, I will gladly add it to the bible, or I can add you as an editor if you wanted to help keep it organized!
But PLEASE search it, I'm quite sure it will answer 99% of any question you have!
Lol it's not gonna change, you know that. It's been in all of our sigs from day one yet hardly ever used.
As long as people continue to provide answers for everyday questions, the new folk, the lazy folk, and the entitled have no need to use it. I understand wanting to help but there has to be a line. The absolute worse thing XDA has done since I've been a member was implement that Thanks button.

This community (Amaze 4G) isn't based on the thanks button, trust me, if it was I'd still be around a lot more than I currently am. But due to the factor than people are lazy and in some cases really slow, the unnecessary post will continue, even though that line has been drawn and tried to be implemented, but questions here are better than them flooding the dev section.

Prior to that thanks button if a new person asked a questions that was asked a thousand times, nine times out of ten the response would be "search". This is XDA wide. When I joined XDA, Android didn't exist. Windows Mobile. Back then you were darn near cursed out for asking a question. The attitude was "this is a developers site. Not a question and answer forum. The answers are on the board. Find them!"
There is no question asked that isn't answered on this board.

Haha, back then I'm sure very few knew the answers, but at least things were SEARCHABLE! Now if I ever want to search something, I find mostly questions that have "search" as an answer!!
It may be pointless to try to get people to use it, but we already put in all of the work.. and damn it, when I need an answer, I'd much rather find less questions than answers! When searching that is!
Anyways, I posted it because I think perhaps having our thread in the development section isn't as helpful as it would be here.. perhaps we can have it moved.

You are fast
You just posted it directly before I wanted to post it
I Can't Help You . . . I'm a Horse
Thanks to all the supporting members of XDA
You really care about XDA
Those who are criticising you are surely noobs
High 5 to you and pacepalm to noobs.
First, due to respect, I called them newbies as I thought I was also like them first.
But I was wrong
If they are only newbies at first
Then I was a pro from birth
I doubt I have posted any question.
I only remember posting a question which was related to the problem coming during recompiling Systemui.apk and that too I solved on my own.
I feel very bad for them.
A way to tell you it without using words...
Sorry [ Youtube ] [ /Youtube ] doesn't work for a reason :/

Yah, i get it, and FYI i am not a noob.
I had glazed my eyes upon the thread of questions.
But i thought my topic would gather much attention. Seems that it took a wrong way.
Sorry:crying::crying:

I'm sorry but I believe this is all a load of crap, yes I support your idea of keeping the forum clean and that users should search before posting, however if they do search and cannot find any answers they have a right to post here in the general forum
I believe posting everything in one thread is dumb and inefficient let's say everyone does post in your thread there will be about a thousand questions and nobody will be able to cope and so it will flood with questions and very little answers, Threads are a lot easier to answer and to help people when they're spread out and left how they are as users can easily see what the problem is and answer the individuals question easily, compared to searching through your thread which makes you read question after question to the supposed answer to your question you may of asked the day before only to find it isn't a solution to your problem but yet another question posted by a fellow user...
again may i say i support the idea of asking people to search and it is your right to not answer them but simply refusing until they post in your thread is dumb, There's nothing wrong with the current system and the forum can be improved if we simply ask politely that thwy search more often and even direct them to the older threads with links, that's what this community is for, helping fellow developers

You are new here and don't understand WE DON'T HAVE A Q&A SECTION
And if you don't know how it feels to see same noob questions filling the General section and then the Guides pushing back and then again noobs asking for it
First, you are the only person right now saying IT IS WRONG TO KEEP GENERAL SECTION CLEAN?
I have said that if nobody
Then I will help every one who questions in my thread
Also it won't matter if questions are repeated there.
You understand?
Here it is against the rules to post a guide or update in development section.
And these things are more important than the noob questions.
You are talking about right of noobs.
You should know rules come before the rights.
If they don't search before posting, they don't deserve this right.
And the next thing, even if they do, if they can't find answers, I WILL ANSWER THEM IF NOBODY DOES.
That's my promise.
I don't know why you support them.
I never saw such noob posting such a question
"Error in smali decompiling"
".xml scatter "
The answer they seek are not necessarily be answered by S5830i General Section
They can be found anywhere on internet.
The questions they post about ROMs and kernel are answered numerous times
They don't have 10 posts and try to be good at it.
Brick the device by their foolishness(It is not easy to Brick a device, and even if you do there are several guides to restore it), and then flood the General section.
I didn't ever want to say that about them but it is true.
So, I never used cuss words about them but you know.
It is kind of spamming they do.
If genuine questions are also posted there.
Then what is the problem.
It is clean.
Believe me it's healthier for noobs
If nobody helps them in General section
Then they will Atleast read which they don't do and that is the problem.
Long Live XDA
Long live General Section(which it won't do if tsunami continues)
Regards
I say again I am not against cleaning up the forum -.-
I just believe your idea is ineffecient
I propose instead that we create a partition and pass it onto a senior mod asking for a new forum section.

Why did my JPay JP5S thread get deleted?

Hello.
I had started a thread a while back about "Installing Google Play Services on JPay JP5S tablet" - in the Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting forum.
Now, all of a sudden, it appears to have been deleted without explanation. Can someone tell me why? Did the thread violate some XDA forum rule? If so, what rule?
I'd appreciate any assistance with this inquiry. I'm new to this forum, but I don't want to repeat any mistakes if I made any.

Hello new fellow ! Welcome to XDA.
First of all, have a look at the rules, it's short and you'll find why your post vanished.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?a=81
Second of all, most newbies here misplaces post, so:
Questions post belongs to Q'n'A section only.
Also, XDA is a very big forum! So always prefer reading over asking, because if you had an issue someone surely had it before. And reposting the same question make the site more and more slower.
A big mistake newbies make is asking before even searching on Google, XDA isn't the only place in the web to find answers, so please, search deeply before posting.
XDA was once accused (a little less now) of "n00b bashing" because more experimented users had harsh responses to questions they saw everytime. If you read thoroughly before posting, this won't happen.
Also, be respectful, etc...
Everytime someone helps you with a post, please hit the "thank" button. It's the way you say thank you instead of saying thank you on a post (that saturate XDA for nothing).
Finally, when you report a bug, please make a logcat and attach it to your post. That's the most common mistakes that even senior members make sometimes.
Also check out the "XDA New user Guide" (1) and a How to logcat thread (2)
1)https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1699450
2)https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1726238
Thanks for asking that, very few new ones takes time thinking how they can better act here on XDA, showing you will to do better proves that every person with a little bit of common sense know that internet has rules also, and that a forum doesn't organize itself alone.
Thank again
Have a good day

Thanks, but your reply still does not shed any light on why my thread was deleted.
I may be a noob to this forum, but I am not a noob to forums in general. I had already read the forum rules, and I believed then (and still believe now) that my thread had complied with the rules.
In particular, I had conducted a search prior to posting, but there were (and still are) no threads on the topic. A current search of "JPay JP5S" reveals five hits: two threads (one of which is my old thread) which are deleted, two threads which I do not yet have permission to access (but which deal with different topics anyways), and this thread here. Thus, my thread was not redundant of a previously asked and answered question.
Is the JPay JP5S a taboo or forbidden topic to discuss? If so, an indication to that effect would be nice. If not, I would still like to know why my thread was deleted. Again, I obviously don't want to repeat whatever mistake I might have made with the last one, if I made any.

That's weird indeed...
There aren't any taboos in XDA regarding this device... You could also try to PM moderators to know what's the issue with your thread, but include this time what you said in it, so you can have explanations. I can't tell you since the thread isn't in front of me. Here is the list of mods in XDA:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lK5rP103OL3StU3q9iqwX9LU_k8XABeSQIAT3EHCqgM/pub
They're all nice
Pick one in the "all other forums" section of the document and try to contact him about that.
PM Sent. Discussion on our end regarding our PM conversation. Hold tight :good:

It has been handled. As the RC already mentioned, please do not hesitate using the "Report Button", when you believe that a violation of the forum rules has occurred. Like this we can take care of situations like this way faster.
Thx for your understanding.

You are welcome :highfive:
And don't worry, you will learn your way around the forums, we all had to
Have a good one :good:
Not to revive this dead thread, but if it's okay to discuss the JP5, then why did *every* thread about it disappear? I get that there were a bunch of people trying to sell services, but why not just delete their posts? There was a 50-some page thread that contained invaluable info that simply doesn't seem to exist anywhere now, and even Google Cache and Wayback Machine are basically useless. It sure *looks* like the JPay people "got to" XDA or something.
If anyone can at least provide a link to the needed files to "unlock" these things, that'd be awesome. Or better yet, can we start a new thread without it going poof? (Or best yet, could that old one ever be restored?)
I am also looking for the files to unlock my jp5 tablet. I also have a jp6 tablet I'd like to unlock. Any help would be great. $ is not an issue
Anyluck?
