[Q] ZTE v967s help installing custom rom - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I am completely new to android and need some help with the basics.
A few days ago I ordered a ZTE v967s phone from DX, it should arrive in a couple of weeks. I understand it is going to come preloaded with ZTE's version of android, which doesn't provide access to the Google play store. I would like to install a ROM as close to stock android as possible, with english language and access to the store.
From what I have been reading on the forum and on the net I gather that to accomplish this I need to: 1) root the phone, 2) install cwm recovery, 3) install a custom rom.
I found a root tool for mkt6589 phones like the v967s on this post, it seems pretty straightfoward to use:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=40624111&postcount=1&nocache=1
I found a CWM recovery for the phone on this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43124312&postcount=15&nocache=1&z=2602546603884548
Lastly, I found a suitable rom on this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43511231&postcount=46&nocache=1&z=7190561038441956
The root tool has simple instructions, so no doubts there. The CWM is a different story though, I have found guides on how to install it but they are usually specific for a particular smartphone, or they refer to a zip file (this is a .img), and from what I read it seems messing up the CWM's install might brick the phone. So if anyone can point me to a step by step on how to do this, I would be most grateful.
On how to install the custom rom, after reading a couple of guides I believe I have to boot into CWM and: 1) wipe data, 2) wipe cache, 3) wipe dalvik cache, 4) install zip from sdcard.
So, I would like to know if I got the process right or if I am missing something. I also need help with CWM's installation.
Thanks.

Lenovo P700, anyone know how to root?

Hello XDA,
Does anyone know how to root the Lenovo P700? It is on ICS 4.0.3. It seems to be a big brother of the A750 which already has root and custom ROM, but the only possibility is in a chinese language forum (bbs.lenovomobile.com).
If not, does anyone have a link to the stock ROMs so I can look them over?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Can you get into the recovery?
If so, just flash Chainfire's root package (The CWM installable ZIP at the bottom)
If you cannot get into the recovery, then indeed you need to find a flashable ROM, both to modify and to create a custom recovery for yourself.
So best search that chinese forum

- Sir, at stock, an owner of this phone said it can get to the recovery mode via Power + Volume up + Volume down. However, there is no 'flash recovery from SD card' as option
Possibly it is what you meant, but the option you are looking for (inside the recovery) is "flash update.zip from SD card" (or similar)
If not, then you first need to find a proper recovery. If you cannot find one on any of the chinese boards, you need to at least find a full ROM for your phone. Or you can nag your vendor for such a ROM.
I did find a chinese forum describing an ICS 4.0.4 ROM, but I can't make heads or tails of it even with google translate.

I've posted a guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1774567
Doomlord's rooting kit for ICS xperia 2011 units also works good enough here (it is kinda universal for ICS).
Better, its a script so you can check it step by step which was what I did.

[Q] Rooted - or not

Hello to everyone
I am the proud owner of a galaxy S3 - i9300 since couple of days (got s2 before) and I would like to install a custom rom. Right now it is official JB. So first I tried to follow the guide from here the galaxys3root.com - galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s3-jelly-bean-or-ics
I finished installing, everything said ok but SuperSU said "“There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem!”. However I was able to enter recovery mode and see that cwm was installed. I repeated the procedure - same result. I tried using the CF-Auto-Root-m0-m0xx-gti9300.tar.md5, it said ok, finished, all green but again i had no root access (cwm still there, root checker said no root and supersu dissappeared).
The ultimate goal for me is to install CM11 rom with kitkat. So please clear some things for me (almost beginner level):
1. do i really need root from now on?
2. can i just reboot into recovery, wipe data/factory reset and install ROM? (all from the device, no odin)
3. is it a better solution to flash stock firmware through odin and start rooting all over again ?
4. Why don't I have root access since I followed all the indicated steps?
One detail that might matter is that now my cwm is version 5.5.0.4 CF v.1.5
Thank you for any help (and again, beginner+1 language please)
Visit CM and CF autoroot site you will find the answer to your questions.
All you need to install CM is recovery, so if you can get into that you are golden and don't need root on your current rom because its going to be over written with CM anyway
Thank you for your replies!
IOU-1, I did some research over the internet and I still do but I'm looking for some straight-on answers right now.
Darke5tShad0w, thanks for your help - right now I have cwm 5.5.0.4 - can you point me towards how to update to newer one? (I cannot do it through play store since I don't have root access).
Ok, I've found the cwm update: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2052091 I think this should work.

Try this since your goal is to install CM-ROM http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/CyanogenMod_Installer
Sorry I dont have alot of time today to be able to find you a link for the updated version.
Few things you can do here,
Use the link IOU-1 posted, I forgot about this yesterday then update CWM with rom manager
Try to flash cm with current CWM, if it works update it with rom manager
Search the forums and find the correct cwm post and update manually
Ok, thanks to everyone for their answers.
I fixed it and I'll say how so anyone in my position will do the same.
As a reminder, I tried to root but all I succeded to do is get cwm installed but no root (so no rom manager or any other root app installed).
What i did was to update cwm manually from within it, with zip install from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2052091
After that I simply installed CM11 - zip install - and now I have root and everything is running smoothly.
Again thanks - and good luck to all.

[Q] Stuck on ClockworkMod Recovery on Asus TF101

Hello,
First of all, I'm new in this forum and I don't know if it's the right place to post this question
I've been through many researches on the web but I couldn't find a clear answer to my problem,
If someone has the resources to help me I'd be glad
So my problem is:
I wanted to install KatKiss ROM - Asus TF101 from this very forum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2592890
And I've started to follow the information given on the page : (if important I use ClockworkMod Recovery v3.1.0.1)
Backup everything !
Go to recovery
Make a full wipe / factory reset (you can skip this step if you're already on KatKiss-4.4, if ever you encounter a problem do the full wipe and try again before reporting )
Format /system
Flash the rom
Flash optional kernel
Flash gapps
Wipe cache/dalvik
Reboot
So I went through the first steps.
I made a factory reset (not with CWM but on the Android settings)
I didn't watched but I think it went ok.
When the Pad booted I couldn't access anymore to the real Android,
but I thought it was due to the manipulation I was doing
So to be sure the previous process wen well I made a full wipe/factory reset with CWM Recovery
I put all the zip files on a SD card that I put in the device,
I can access to the files on it
and as instructed I installed
KatKiss 4-4-2_023c.zip
KatKiss 4.4_AddOn_TF101G_Kernel_01.zip
gapps-KatKiss-4.4.2_20140221b.zip
When rebooting I couldn't acces anything but CWM.
Well I came to ask, what should I do, what should I check, what I shouldn't do?
I've tried to use the function Restore, because when I installed CWM I made a backup as instructed, but it seems to fail when I want to restore.
In need for answers, I thank you in advance for any piece of advice.
Since I got no answers I tried by myself some stuffs
I installed CyanogenMod 9.1.0-tf101 (only problem I can't connect to home wifi :good
I can access to the desktop of the tablet now (that's nice!)
But I have still some problems for which I'm looking answers.
In my reserches in found that the biggest mistake I made was to install Rom Manager (5.0.2.0) to access CWM
(Well, i'm a rookie...)
Now my best wish would be to run the tablet Katkiss 4.3 (i've seen that there were some compatible version for my TF101)
- How can I manage to get rid of Rom Manager ?
- How can I replace CMW by TWRP ? (It seems to be way better than RomManager & CWM)
- How to install
I don't understand all of the technical terms, Kernel Roms Drivers Flash Cyanogenmod Katkiss RomManager CWM TWRP what does what, i'm kind of lost, if any good samaritan read this I'd be so happy to have some advice of what I should do or just show me the path to some places where i can find specific answers i'd be glad..

[Q] Installed CWM Recovery on Galaxy Note N7000 and got in a bootloop straight away

Hello dear community
This is my very first thread I am making on this website, so please pardon me if I am on the wrong page of this website.
Anyways, I'm more or less desperate. I saw a youtube tutorial on how to install Android 4.4 Kit Kat on a Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 and I heard I'd need root AND a custom recovery.
Because I'm a total newbie to this kind of stuff, I tried the very first thing I saw that had something to do with custom recovery, because I already had my phone rooted. So, I looked up a tutorial on youtube on how to install CWM custom recovery and ended up with installing it successfully, but now my phone is stuck in a bootloop. As I already mentioned, I am a newbie and therefore I am very desperate at the moment, you know.
The only thing I can do is go to Recovery Mode, but if I try to turn the phone on it gets stuck in a bootloop (It actually doesn't loop at all, it just freezes at the moment when the Samsung Galaxy Note logo appears and doesnt do anything after that.).
I think my problem is that I actually threw a new Kernel on my phone, because the video title says "How to install Kernel with CWM [...]"
I would be very very very very very grateful if anyone was kind enough to help me get out of this!
I really need help!
Thanks!
PS.
If this helps you help me:
This happened when I had Android 4.1.2 installed.
There's going to be 2 ways to get out of this:
1) Reinstall the stock firmware via Odin.
2) Install a custom rom via recovery.
Personally, I'd go with number 2 because a) you wanted to update anyway and b) if you have the right recovery and rom, it'll be easier as you can just put the files you need on an external SD card and install via the custom recovery. Now, not all recoveries are able to flash any file. Many times you need specific ones to install the newer android versions. So, if you are wanting to install something 4.4 based, then using a recovery that was made, say, last year, probably will not work well if at all.
Another thing to try first, is to wipe the cache and dalvik cache in recovery since you said you tried to install a kernel. It is always recommended to wipe these when installing (assuming you did pick a compatible kernel with what you were trying to install).

Xposed Installer Help

Hi guys
Apologies if this has been posted in the wrong section.
I have recently inherited a Galaxy S2 (GT-I9100) running the CyanogenMod 12.1, Android Version 5.1.1
I have spent the last two day trying to and failing miserably to install Xposed Installer V3.0 Alpha 2, I have searched Google and read through numerous forums on how to resolve this, but the more I read the more confusing it becomes. I would really appreciate any help/assistance in helping me fix the problem, so that I can run the app without any issues. When I access the app's log it states:
data/data/de.robv,android,xposed.installer/log/error.logpen failed. ENOENT (No such file or directory)
Also, when I try to run Titanium Backup 6.1.0, I get an error stating:
Sorry, I could not acquire root privileges. This application will *not* work! Please very that your ROM is rooted, and try again.
This attempt was made using the "/system/xbin/su" command.
I have gone into Developer Options and set Root Access to Apps and ADB.
As I new to Android my understanding (please correct me if I am wrong) that the CyanogenMod 12.1 was actually a ROM and therefore Titanium Backup should work. FYI SD Maid not working.
Any help on both of these issues would be most appreciate, please bear in mind I am a noob where Android and Galaxy S2 are concerned.
Thanks in advance.
The forum for the i9100 is located here, but because it's so close to the i777 we can probably help a bit.
Sounds to me like your phone isn't rooted, as none of the apps you mention will work without root privileges. Install the latest SuperSU; you should be getting access prompts if you're correctly rooted.
If you are not prompted for root access when opening apps such as Titanium Backup, you'll need to install Framaroot and use the Aragorn exploit in order to easily root your device. Let us know if either of these work for you.
Hi Steve
Thanks for the reply.
I should have mentioned that I already have Super SU installed and for certain apps it does ask me to grant access. If open Super SU it displays the following apps:
Titanium Backup
Root Explorer

Strange. In that case have you tried doing a complete wipe in recovery, then reinstalling the ROM? In your case you would boot into recovery, wipe /system and dalvik cache, then install ROM and gapps. Just make absolutely certain you're running a custom recovery before doing this, such as CWM (ClockworkMOD) or TWRP (TeamWin), or you could damage your device if you're on stock recovery. And, of course, make sure you have the ROM/gapps already on your device before wiping everything!
Because you inherited the device the best method would normally be to flash back to stock and start all over - if for nothing else it's a good learning experience. Hope this helps.
Hi Steve
Thanks for the reply and your advice/information, very informativinformativ.
I was trying to avoid a complete wipe and reinstalling the ROM again, as Android is new to me and I don't want to mess up the installation and wreck the phone, even it was free. However, I think I have no choice and will have to bite the bullet and do it.
Thanks once again.

As long as you have a custom recovery there's very little that can go wrong with a full wipe. I would suggest booting into recovery first (power button + both volume keys, then release at the Samsung logo) and make sure you're running either CWM or TWRP. While in recovery do a backup first, as a "just in case". You can always restore your device fully from a backup.
The next thing to remember is to make sure your ROM/gapps are compatible with one another. For instance, if you're installing a CM12 (Android 5.0+) ROM make sure your gapps are also 5.0+.
Best of luck!
When I attempt to go into Recovery Mode it does so, but opens a CyanogenMod screeb, it dies not show any options to backup/restore, it foes however have the complete wipe option. When I run ROM Manager I have done the following Recovery Setup, which now shows Recovery Already Installed:
ClockworkMod Recovery
TWRP
But I don't understand what I'm doing wrong, for neither option to be available in Recovery Mode?

Best option for you is to go to the i9100 forum and download a kernel for your phone that is compatible with the OS version you want to install (CM12, which is 5.1. in your case). With your device (as well as our i777), the kernel and recovery are fused together, so you cannot use ROM Manager to install a recovery to a separate partition.
Once you have an i9100 5.1 kernel downloaded on your phone you can flash it through the current recovery you have, then immediately reboot back into recovery. You'll then have the correct recovery and can proceed as normal with the ROM installation.
CWM absolutely has a backup/restore option, but it's hidden in a sub menu. My personal recommendation is to use TWRP recovery, as it's still being developed and is more robust/user friendly.
So as a general rule stay away from ROM Manager for system specific changes.
Thank you so much for the information/advice, I really do appreciate all of it.
