keyboard on old cm7.2 had a great predictor, it not only showed 4,5 words at once on screen (on my small ace screen) it was a pretty good rpedictor, the one on android 4.1/4.2 seems pale in comparison, is there better keyboard predictors out there?
Its quite subjective. I personally like smart keyboard pro, because I find it HTC-esque. Many like swiftkey

I use the Note 2 keyboard - you can get a version of it Here - I got a glassy blue version but I can't find it in search. I've done entire msgs by tapping at most the first letter of a word - I hated predictive prior to this.
Used to piss me off that I had to go to a different screen for numbers - with this I have them on screen one as well as a press-hold for the most common symbols. I don't think it worked on the 4.2.2 version I tried, which is why I went back to 4.1.2
ok I am on 4.1.2 anyway (as I prefer it to 4.2.2) so thats not a problem, thanks.
Swype is good also and worth a try
I used swipe and quite recently switched to SwiftKey. What I like about SwiftKey is that it seems to run smoother and you can have 2 languages enabled at the same time, e.g. English and German, hence no switching needed.
I find prediction of both quite similar.

I've tried Swype, HTC's default, Swiftkey (paid) and few others. By far and away, my favorite keyboard is the Gingerbread (Android 2.3 default) keyboard.
+1 Gingerbread Keyboard
- HTC Evo 4G
I have fully tested the Desire Z and despite has a small keyboard it´s better than any on-screen keyboard.
If you don´t have big fingers will be perfect
I'm currently using better keyboard 8 but still not too satisfactory

That I can understand
I couldn't get on with the basic android keyboard (it's like the WP7 keyboard) missing numbers off the top row etc so installed swype, and while the numbers are in the wrong place, it did make typing easier, especially when on the move.
Much as I like the Sense keyboard I think I'm going to go back to swype simply for ease of use.
I've tested a few and Swype is by far my favorite. Swype is other keyboards as T9 was to the regular ABC input.
Has anyone tried 'thumb keyboard'?

I concur, although it took some getting used to coming from HTC's version. Once I disabled the speech input to get my comma back I was happy.
Gingerbread Keyboard > All.
I love the Gingerbread keyboard; that and smart keyboard pro for all of the customizations you have with it.
Using Ginger right now on my Nexis and love it though.
Swype is by far the best. Took some time getting used to but it's much faster I find than regular typing
I'm totally clumsy with any keyboard i use so i just go with whatever looks best
I have adjusted to Swype by now and am pretty fast....plus I am not in a habit of forgetting spellings due to shortening to words!
Guys, does anybody know a keyboard that works like old phones with a keypad on them? Where it had 1-9 and letters on them. If you tap twice on 2 you get B, tap three on 6 and you'd get O etc.

IMHO gingerbread keyboard is the best
What makes the gingerbread keyboard the best?
It doesn't look much different to the froyo keyboard, other than having numbers along the top row?
I'm a big time texter, probably 3000+ texts per month, and using Swype changed my life. (sounds like those cheesy commercials lmao)
I use the better keyboard 8, as well.
Recently just flashed a ROM onto my phone and it has gingerbread keyboard on it, so i'm mixed between the two. Gingerbread seems a lot more responsive.
When I've used Gingerbread ROM's I've enjoyed the keyboard. Only if it would have easy access to function keys(colons etc.), I'd love it. Hated it at the start, but it grew on me a lot.
Just curious to know what keyboard you guys all use?
I use SwiftKey.
Swiftkey
Maybe would have been better with a poll.
Stock Android Gingerbread keyboard, the "Samsung" keyboard is a joke compared to the stock experience. Sometimes Swype, but not usually.
stock ginger keyboard here.
The awesome thing that is Swiftkey, of course !
Stock Samsung.
Swiftkey
10 Characters
SwiftKey all the way.
Tried a few and I have finally settled on SwiftKey, I used a Desire Z for 4 months so its gonna take some time getting used to a virtual keyboard again but the extra width and bigger keys is a huge help.

How did you get this working, I tried just copying the one over from my old HD2 mod but then cancelled when it said touch input will replace system settings or something along those lines and now get force closes even though I've removed it. Can this work alongside the other keyboards or do you have to replace? If replace, how can I backup the standard please?
Sorry for all the questions and thanks.

The HTC MOD one is really good, i used it with my Galaxy S. you need this version (which i am using): .
Just a little test for the various keyboards out there, over the many months since i first got my first Galaxy s, i have tried many many different keyboards and none, except the HTC MOD one, would allow you to enter anything into the drop down 'search this thread' box on xda's full site which i always found strange, granted, you have to be in landscape and it takes a couple of touches of the box to allow you type anything, but no other keyboard i have tried will allow you to do this! I challenge anyone to find a keyboard that does.
All of you using the Swiftkey or Smartkeyboard....
I tried using both. But in the email composition application neither of those keyboards shows word suggestions...i.e. in Swift key the word prediction bar appears in all apps except email compose mode. In Smartkeyboard, the word suggestions appear in all apps except in email compose mode.
Am I the only one facing this issue???
Please help. Because of the above I am having to live with the default Samsung Keyboard.
Thanks so much for the HTC keyboard link. The stock keyboard is very frustrating. I'd tried lots of others but all had their problems. This has improved my phone tremendously!
Hey all
I recently upgraded to the galaxy s2 from the HTC desire and just cant get used to the galaxy s2 keyboard. I used the HTC_IME mod keyboard on the desire and loved it, and am wondering if there is a similar one of the desire or what the best alternative is. the htc_ime mod does install on the galaxy s2, but it keeps hanging and make a few apps crash, so not really usable
The main thing i liked about it was that it could quickly remember thing like emails (which contain an _ and an @ (obviously) )
Ive added the email to the dictionary, but as the second letter is an underscore, there doesnt seem to be a quick way to get it to 'recommend it' onscreen without typing out the whole thing
Any ideas/suggestions?
i like stock samsung or Swipe

in my opinion A.I.type keyboard is the best for me.
Hey mate, I am from the desire also. I used the stock gingerbread on my desire, it was my favourite KB, although the size is terrible on SGS2 so I use HTC_IME mod and works a treat ;-)
I hate stock samsung keyboard and use smart keyboard instead for typing. Anyway I recently started using swype, at the beginning I hated it but now I don't using anything else since it's by far the fastest method for me, it just takes time getting used to (not more than a couple hours anyway). So my suggestion: give swype a try, I don't think you'll regret it.

I can use HTC_IME mod for some things, but it wont work on the stock email app (the one with the red stamp on the icon) and seems to freeze every so often an d stop the touch screen from detecting anything for a few seconds. Thats why im looking to change
I don't like the stock keyboard. I think it's too "stock" I don't like Swipe too. I'm using SwiftKey X and I like it.
Plenty of options, SwiftKey X, TouchPal, Better keyboard, and loads more.
I've tried most and TouchPal is very decent for a beta but always come back to SwiftKey as its prediction is extremely well and I like the way it learns words. New update due today should make it better. Free version already updated though so give it a try for a month.
Although it doesn't have that many options compared to others in the market.

Ditto !!!!
Depends on the user. If he/she like click typing keyboard then SwiftKey, Big Button, A.I.Type keyboard, but users like me, who loves Swype, could try SlideIT and TouchPal. But TouchPal is the best IMO. Still it has some bugs.
All I can say that the default Swype is a PITA. Least the one I used, 2.72, can't say about the newer version however.
New update is now out for paid users, finally got it updated let's see how much better this is. A.I type is also very good. Quite a vast choice now for users depending on what they want.

I'm not objective (being the developer) but I recommend A.I.type
Give it a try!
A.I.type Keyboard Plus (paid) or A.I.type Keyboard Beta (beta is over but we keep it on the market for now).
i'm using better keyboard
I find Siwftkey X is the best for speed, easily deleting unwanted suggested words, auto corrections and predictions for all the normal keyboards I have used. I started to like AI type keyboard until I realised it wasn't as good at the predicitons, autocorrect and removing suggested words... Shame because it had its pros as well.
swift key x without a doubt. the prediction as others have mentioned is top notch. it learns fast, looks nice, and works really well. (I have tried swype, stock, GO keyboard)
Touchpal FTW
Touchpal all the way, but for some reason its not working on the new Revolt update.... help?
I've been using Swiftkey for the longest but it's been buggy since an update so I'm looking for options. Preferably one with predictive typing.
I've tried other keyboards, but always end up back at the Swype beta. The predictive text is nearly perfect, especially once it learns as you use it. I also like sliding my finger to type. So, I use it while it's free and available.

I use the htc stock keyboard, too.
Alternative, I use the Swift Keyboard and no problems so far.
+1 for Thumb Keyboard
I'm a Swype man with their latest update copying SwiftKey with implementing a prediction algorithm. I don't think it's used to it's full potential (ie. That could use it to knock out words that are similar to the pattern but you're obviously not going to use after the previous word) but it's nice.
SwiftKey 3 would be my only other alternative.

I have also come back to Swype Beta :good:. Great layout and you can prod or swipe. Currently the Dragon Naturally Speaking add-on does not work for me - not sure if caused by the custom ROM or something else - but as I prefer to swipe it is no big loss. Only additional comment on the predictive text is it tends only to offer predictions/alternatives once you have finished swiping a word, rather that guessing part way through and offering options. It offers the additional predictive words neatly across the top of the keyboard which can be scrolled horizontally to see more.
Other option
If you'd like to try something else, go for A.I. Type. It's not free (or as good as swiftkey) but works quite well nonetheless. (The Tablet version is incredible though.) :victory:

Swype is what most people I know use/love... there are a few for Swiftkey...
Myself? I use Hackers Keyboard... If you use prediction alot I dont think its going to be for you, but give it a try anyway if your shopping around for a replacement anyway...
Ok, so this is really just a heads up. I don't know what keyboard all of you are addicted to or put up with, but an update that SwiftKey just received via its beta channel makes it perfect for our phone. It's the 4.3 Beta update.
I'll post links for the download on their website and a small review that Android Central did earlier today, but essentially all the same functionality that's great is still there along with the ability to reposition the keyboard in several ways. You can split it down the middle (great for landscape typing on our phones), make it compact to fit to either side (great for one hand typing on our phones, which does actually works fantastically now), and you can leave it as a normal, full sized phone keyboard. Additionally, you can now resize it dynamically without leaving the keyboard to five(!) different sizes (all increasing the keyboard in height) and most importantly, you can undock and dock the keyboard to your liking. They've essentially combined their tablet and phone offerings and enhanced them. Which is perfect, because we have the definition of a tablet/phone.
I believe it's free in its beta state, so the least you can do is give it a try. But honestly, this keyboard is leaps and bounds ahead of any other in the market.

I use swiftkey because first of all I use all my devices in english and in android it's a bit tricky when the stock keyboard uses the system language to get å ä ö. And I'm able to turn off all the autocorrections and to remove finish word on spacekey to gain full control of what's going on when I'm writing something. It's also not bloated with animations, email-activation system and special keys other than the swiftkey symbol.
stock keyboard (Xperia Keyboard with handwriting) is garbage (to me)
I press "space" and it pressing "dot".
Cuz space button and the dot button is located close to each other.
And sometimes even when you starting typing fast it gives 0.5sec
interval of lag. (the delay lag can be felt through the sound and vibration)
Well now briefly about the main "Google keyboard"
i used to use swype... then migrated to swiftkey when it introduced 'flow' ... now im running sony stock. They are all pretty similar.
i know that swiftkey and sony stock can be changed so the dot is not on the page, and it will auto full stop if you press space twice.
...so thats what I'm doing. BOOM!

Yeah that's my issue with the stock keyboard, the spacebar isn't big enough. The swiftkey one just seems to run a little heavy on the resources, that's always be the case more or less.
I like the way the Sony one looks but I can't seem to get used to smacking the period key all the time
